Portege 3110ct has no sound after installing XP Pro

I'm a novice when it comes to laptops, so here is the problem: My 3110ct has no sound after installing XP Pro. Didn't have sound when I bought it with another operating system on, report says no sound device installed.
Does this mean I need to get a chip for the laptop or is it a driver I need & where can I find the part or the driver for this.
Please help.

Usually if the sound driver was not installed you will get no sound but also a yellow exclamation mark should appear in the device manager.
If the sound card chip is damage I presume you will be not able to see the yellow exclamation belonging to the sound card in the device manager.
You bought this Portg as a second hand unit. Am I right?
So possibly the sound card is faulty.
The computer uses a ESS ES1978 (Maestro-2E) and ES1918 sound chip.
Check if you can find an XP sound driver in the internet.

I cannot find your audio driver on HP's support page, but I was able to locate this one, which is the same driver as yours, just the most recent version. According to what is listed, it supports Windows 8. Give it a shot and let me know if it works for you.

NO SOUND AFTER INSTALLING WINDOWS 8.1

Hi, I'm hoping someone will be able to help. My sister has a compaq 58 laptop and after installing windows 8.1, now has no sound. The sound was there when 8.1 was installed but after logging off and logging back on again, the sound disappeared. We reinstalled windows 8.1 and same thing happened. We have run scans and got sound again but once again logging off and logging back on again, the sound disappeared, very frustrating.

Devina, This seems to be a common problem with Windows 8.1. It does not save a working state when logging off. I was afraid to touch my pc when the AUDIO was in a working state. However Microsoft logged me off with no fear and did not save the working state. What a great "glutware" corp. Having said that when the AUDIO is working it appears to work great! Sure wish HP/MICROSOFT could get their act together. Can you say "BASE BAND" , "DSP", "FIR" ETC. Well they think they know the fancy stuff. Now if they could just get it to function for normal people. Can you say "KISS".

No sound after installing Adobe Flash 11.7

After installing the new Adobe Flash Player 11.7 I have no sound.
I reinstalled, uninstalled and started the imac new but I find no solution.
When I'm starting the imac, I always heard the opening sound.
After searching and contacting the support with no results, I try to turn
up the volume at the source and connect the soundsystem again and
now can hear the music.
I think Adobe reduce the sound of the source at zero, and the imac
rest on the last position.
I'm right? Many Thanks in advance.

Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

[SOLVED] No sound after installing pulseaudio

Hi,
I recently installed pulseaudio to be able to use skype since their update to version 4.3.
I installed with additional stuff using the command:
$ sudo pacman -S pulseaudio pulseaudio-alsa pavucontrol lib32-libpulse
After installing I ran the commands:
$ pulseaudio -k
$ pulseaudio --start
At this point, skype and sound were working properly again.
After rebooting my computer, I completely lost the sound. I tried killing and restarting pulseaudio and reinstalled twice, but I never managed to have to sound back since...
Any suggestions?

Problems playing sound after installing 10.4.4

After installing 10.4.4 update, i have a problem when i play some mp3 file in itunes or quicktime 7.0.4, it sounds with jumps and cracking. I've reinstalled the update using the combo, repair permisions, reinstalled quicktime and nothing happens.
Any suggestion?

After upgrading to OS 10.4.4 I have no startup chime or sound. I to tried changing the Audio MIDI Setup application (located in Applications/Utilities) and changing the output setting to different settings and back to 44 KHz (44100.0 Hz). No sound after installing windows 7 on HP Pavilion dv1710us Notebook PC

I recently helped my uncle install windows 7 on his HP Pavilion dv1710us Notebook PC
and there was no sound after installation.. i downloaded several drivers for the realtek high definition audio driver (R2.39, 38, 37, etc)
then i tried the original driver from the HP drivers page and installed it.
usually when there is no sound, there would be a red X on the volume icon, but when i installed the original driver from the HP drivers page, there was no more red X.. Thinking that the sound was fixed, I tried to go on youtube and watch a video... i see the green bar moving up and down on the volume slide, but then i can't hear anything.
So is there any realtek high definition audio driver compatible for windows 7 on the HP pavilion dv1710us?
Is there something I have to do, like right click on the application and then change compatibility settings?

I got it to work with windows 7 32 bit. I just went to hp website to support and downloads section. Type in your model number, then select windows xp as the operating system. Then download the audio driver and save it to your desktop. After the file is on your desktop you need to right click on it and click properties, then go to compatability tab and tell it to install as windows xp service pack 3. Hit apply then install. Hope it works for ya, worked for me.

Is anyone else having issues with their sound after installing 10.9?

After installing Mavericks, if my computer goes to sleep, my sound stops working when it wakes up. Is anyone else having this issue? Is there a solution, is it an OS bug or is it something I can fix?

There are quite a number of people reporting this and there doesn't seem to be a permanent fix (other than rebooting and not letting your computer go back to sleep ) I'm sure it is on Apple's list of things to fix...and I know that's not of much immediate help.

Skype Problems after installing MagicJack

I installed MagicJack on my computer, in that I had no router. Then I could text through Skype to friends but could not call them. The Echo Test did not work. I then uninstalled MJ, bought a router, and tried Skype; no luck.
I then put ethernet cable back directly into teh computer modem, tried Skype, and got a message: "Call to Echo / Sound Test Service, no answer."
MJ says to check with Skype for a possible unstable connection.
I wish to use MJ for outgoing calls but use Skype for Skype to Skype calls. MJ says that if I have a router, and if I unplug MY when I want to use Skype, there shuld be no conflict.
Can anyone see a way to make this work?

I habve exactly the same problem with my wireless Deskjet F4500. I have done the following with no results:
Installed Mountain Lion update
Printer cannot communicate wirelessly (blue light blinks)
Uninstalled HP Software
Reinstalled software using usb cable, otherwise printer not recognized.
Software successfully installed
Ran software update
New HP Software installed 2.9
Printer still connected with usb cable and is recognized in Printer preferences as idle
Box checked to configure device for wireless network
Directed to use usb cable to configure (it already is)
clicked continue
Hp Installer determines that computer is connected to a wireless network
correct net name indicated
wep password entered
looking for network
Get the following message:
Device not connected
To configure the network settings of the selected device, please connect it temporarily via usb. The device can be disconnected from the usb once the network setting are transferred
click okay, but cannot continue because printer is already connected by usb.
Ran wireless net test by pressing scan button
No filtering FAILS
I can print using USB cable

And now i have lost it again. The sound wont run on 4GB ram pc's and uptill now i dont know why hp or windows havent fixed this issue.
All you have to do is reduce your RAM
The proccess is as follow
windows key + run
type msonfig
on the boot tab click advanced options
check the box close to Maximum Memory
make the value to be 3GB(3096).
Click apply and ok.
Restart your pc
And there you are, your sounds are out as well as your headphone jack is working
