No sound (again)

I've lost sound again. Volume is stuck at full with no way to toggle audio.
I've tried the paper clip method, resetting the PRAM, resinstalling iTunes-nothing (I've skimmed the discussion threads).
I'm a grad student who needs audio in order to view my online tutorials. In addition to no audio, QT won't play, nor will Macromedia Flash content.
Getting the H/W serviced isn't really an option because I can't afford the downtime.
Any help would be appreciated.

Love it. Called the local Apple store, and received the same response and level of support as another user's thread here:
1) No, we've never seen that in our machines
2) We'll have to make an appointment to troubleshoot the problem
3) Repair could take 3-5 business days turnaround
Why doesn't Apple admit there is an issue here and offer a fix to users? For such an awesome machine, I can't believe it's audio is out (again).
I should have stuck with a Dell.

  • QT 7.5, . 1st No Sound, then forum help, sound again & no sound again

    Hi,
I updated the QT to 7.5. Obviously, had lost sound on AVI, MPG Files. Then i followed it up in this forum and did all the steps to get the sound back.
Now yesterday when I play my MPG, again no sound, only picture.
My Mac is currently not connected on the internet, hence nothing is changed or upgraded. No software's installed or removed.
What could I do to get the sound back?
    Thanks,

  • My iphone 4 started making a sound like "boing" with a vibration/ wobbly sound.  It does it at least once a day.  I've reset my phone, used icloud to restore, and it made the sound again upon startup.  Help!  This is so annoying.

My iphone 4 started making a sound like a "boing" with a vibration/ wobbly sound.  It does this at least once a day.  It started about a month ago.  Anyone got any ideas?

Mine does this also, seemingly randomly several times throughout the day.  I do not have this sound as any of my alerts and it does not seem to denote anything like a message, reminder, etc.  I do have "Trapster" on my phone and I went in and tweaked the settings there.  Will repost if that has any efect.

Today I noticed that the sound (music, games and videos) was not working on my Iphone 4.  I can still hear updates, phone calls, ringing, text messages etc.  I have backed up the phone and restored it, but that didnt work.  If I plug head phones into the phone that works.  I dont understand.  Does anyone have any suggestions beforeI take it an Apple store or just get a new phone.

  • Youtube and sound - again...

I have no sound in youtube videos at all... I've looked at some other threads on this and none of them seem to have any solutions that help me...
Any ideas - or threads that I missed in the search...

I assume you use Firefox/Bon Echo? I found this solution on a forum, works for me:
Streaming flash videos (ie. youtube, google video) have no sound.
    # Flash looks for /usr/lib/libesd.so.1
    ln -s /usr/lib/libesd.so.0 /usr/lib/libesd.so.1
    # Flash expects /tmp/.esd/socket to exist.
    mkdir -p /tmp/.esd/
    touch /tmp/.esd/socket
exit from the root account and from the console run: esd & firefox.
Although if esd is already running, sometimes firefox won't start... it's never worked perfectly, I usually only use 'esd & firefox' when I'm viewing flash specifically, not just day-to-day use.

  • Sound again

I did download the mpeg thing, and still have no sound. After converting the song on mpeg, do I still need to convert in itunes in order to put on ipod?

The only way I've found is either hook the MB to
either earbuds or external speakers with its own
    volume control.
Hay Apple, can we have a solution to this problem?
There isn't any "Hay Apple" here. Do you think they honestly will see this message, slap their foreheads and think: "OH! We need to redesign the 1/2" speakers to better project audio... Why didn't we think of that before???"
There are three 1/2" diameter speakers in the MacBook. As Apple tweaks the settings, the audio will improve, but by the chassis design that our MacBooks have, this will never be a "loud" computer. Those little dinky speakers just don't have the ability.
The MacBook user definitely needs an external sound setup of sorts. That is just the way it is, due to the placement of these little tiny speakers.

  • No Sound, here we go again...

New to Flash, old to everything else. Wanted to put a simple
5 minute video clip on a site, in a flash file. I chose "import
video", chose my video clip, which is labelled as a .mpg file. And
when testing in Flash itself, video only, no sound. So I publish,
    upload, no sound again.
Now, I've done searches in the forums here, and everyone is
mentioning this problem as if it's local to their own machine and
player. However, when I check this on both my macs, and my new xp
install, which is bone stock, I still get zero sound.
The mpg plays fine in Quicktime player, but the minute Flash
gets ahold of it, sound is gone.
I've spent several hours already trying various formats, and
    it doesn't matter.
This is such basic stuff, it's hard to believe at a version 8
and 9, this stuff still happens.
So what's the secret? Do I have to convert the thing to a
.flv format, or can I somehow embed it in, or keep it in Quicktime
    format?

First of all - the statement of "...put a simple 5 minute
video clip on a site..." - that's kind of
    an oxy-moron - a 5 min video is not exactly "simple" - it's
large and there are several ways to go
about this way better than importing it into a flash file -
try exporting it as an FLV and using the
Flash Media Player to progressively stream as opposed to a
    humongus SWF.
Also - I do believe that audio in a MPEG imported to Flash on
a *mac* will never be included on
import. Pretty sure that statement is true - but I do not own
    a mac.
regardless - if I had a 5 minute chunk of audio - the last
thing I would do is import it directly
into a flash file - make an FLV out of it and keep it
    external.
    hope this helps.

  • Loss of Sound

    hey everybody,
My desktop has lost all sound output. today I was trying to fix this, reconfiguring alsa, uninstalling and reinstalling it and setting everything up again. still no sound.
shutdown the comp, made sure the cables still hooked up on the inside (I had just put in a new fanless heatsink on my vid card last week). everything is fine.
I booted up with a live cd, first tried fedora13...only to have fedora barf and not load the live environment.
then booted from crunchbang 10a2, which worked fine. still no sound here, either.
could this be caused by anything else, or is my on-board sound just dead?
is there anything else to troubleshoot?

    Hi jamba,
I think the issue is that your output of lspci shows no Audio device. Perhaps it got disabled in the BIOS? dmesg output may indicate something else afoot with your audio hardware.
    Hope that helps.
I'll check out dmesg output.  also still need to check if something got disabled in the BIOS.
!snd_intel8x0m  <- is your problem. Your sound module got blacklisted so un-list it. Modprobe it then try sound again or just reboot and it should work.
moonswan.  snd_intel8x0 is the sound card (I think), in the alsa wiki it said it was recommended to blacklist snd_intel8x0m as a quirk fix.
No sound with or without it blacklisted still :-(

  • Msi 5870 1gb reference design rattling sound

    Hello everyone,
I just joined MSI forum to get some help.
I have MSI 5870 1GB reference design and I had this card about a year now.
Few days ago I started to receive rattling noise coming from my 5870.
When I play intensive graphic games, I get this rattling sound once in a while. I found out that I am getting a rattling noise when I start or stop intense graphic use.
I started MSI kombuster and I get little rattling noise at the beginning and I also get rattling sound when I stop. I keep repeating to use msi kombuster to start and stop to get rattling noise.
I hold the side of the card (not the fan) with my one finger and rattling sound was gone. Rattling will come back again, but whenever I touch the card, rattling sound will be gone.
I am just worried if my fan is dying or if this is something else. I don't want to touch the fan while running. Please advice.
    Thanks in advance.

Take a cardboard tube, like from a paper towel roll, and make sure the sound is coming from the vid card.  I know you said that if you touch the card the rattling stops, but let's make sure it really is coming from the card.  Next, with the power off, pull the video card and blow it out with compressed air.  Re-seat the card firmly and re-connect the power cables.  Turn on the machine.  Does it still rattle?
Thanks for you reply. Now I have to wait for rattling sounds to come back lol. I have rattling sounds 2 or 3 times a day, so I probably have to play some games and wait for those rattling sounds again. If I get a rattling sound again, I'll use paper towel rolll to make sure it's the card.
I don't have any problem with my card though. Performance is awesome and never having any problems playing games. Maybe I am just very sensitive.
I'll update you guys later tonight.

  • Sound does not work correctly all the time, on youtube.

So I have been having this issue for a while now, and I have tried everything to fix it on my own.
My issue is sometimes you-tube videos will play about 1-2 sec of sound then stop, the video will buff all the way out and I can watch it but no sound will come from it. Once it happens if I try to watch another video they will all have no sound, but if i start up itunes it will still play music, so it's not my PC.
Once I close Firefox and reopen it 80% of the time it will play sound on the same video, the other 20% of times it will play 1-2secoinds of sound again and quit playing sound, if I restart fire fox again it will play just fine. Also I do not seem to get this issue with internet explore.
    Stuff I have done.
Check for updates for my video/sound cards.
Uninstalled/installed flash 3 times even downloads the Adobe Flash player uninstaller, then reinstalled flash again.
Unchecked enable hardware acceleration, in the Adobe Flash setting.
    My setup
    Firefox 3.6.13
    Windows 7 64bit
ATI HD radeon HD 4350 video card.
I have my PC connected to my TV, sound/video is carried with a HDMI cable from my video card.

Did you check the settings for Firefox in the Volume Mixer?

A frickload of kudos to anybody that will either be able to recommend an alternative mixer (without having to install OSS/Pulse) or be able to link or recommend a fix.
    Kind regards,
    Mastermind

So I just spent another couple of hours battling with alsa.
I went from sound but no mixer, to no sound at all. And then back to having sound again after 4 hours of command mashing. All that after just a weekend in suspend/standby.
The only difference I could detect was that the subdevice on the card changed, but simply defining (and alsa restoring) that one in the ~/.asoundrc did not do the trick.
I also came across a more detailed error with the crashing alsamixer.
/usr/share/alsa/init/default:171: value write error: Invalid argument
/usr/share/alsa/init/default:185: value write error: Invalid argument
Commenting these lines did not fix the error.
    Some more outputs:

When I turn it back on it will have sound again for about 5 seconds before going silent again. Has anyone else expeirenced this? Any ideas what may be happening
