No sound and no audio card in device manager
Hello!
I have a HP Pavilion dv6710ea and my operating system is 32-bit Windows Vista SP2. Quite some time ago my optical CD/DVD drive stopped working. It simply disappeared from My Computer and the Device Manager. I've tried all the suggested fixes I found on this forum but none of them worked. But I didn't need the drive that much anyway, so after some struggle I just gave up on this issue.
And now another such thing happened. Suddenly, I lost sound and when I hovered my mouse pointer over the sound icon at the taskbar, a pop-up showed saying "No Audio Output device is installed.". I checked the device manager, and my audio card was gone! Any attempts to detect it failed. I restored the system to the point before the problem occured, but it did not help. I tried to install the new audio drivers, but the installation failed, because the device could not have been found. Now I don't know what else can be done to try to fix this. I certainly hope it is not related with hardware failure of some kind.
I would greatly appreciate any help on this issue.
Hi,
Reset BIOS to defaults
Restart the PC, as you see initial POST Screen on the Monitor, start pressing F10 to access BIOS< press f5, select Yes, and Press f10 to save and exit.
Download and install Audio Driver.
Thank You.

K8N Sound Blaster(p17) Suddenly Invisible to Device Manager
I have Onboard Sound enabled in the BIOS, and I did have sound working for many months until I woke up this morning, turned on the PC and heard a "BEEP" from the PC Speaker instead of the usual windows event sounds. I looked at the Device Manager and my sound hardware was just.. Gone! Invisible! Disappeared!
I re-installed the audio drivers(specified in the downloads section of the MSI site for my particular motherboard: Sound Blaster Live! 24bit, or p17) but they did not detect their hardware. I even tried re-installing the mainboard drivers package(C51_CK804_MN30003.) What's even more strange is when I go into the BIOS and *disable* onboard sound, a mysterious unnamed "PCI Device" gets detected by windows(it goes away again once I re-enable Onboard Sound.) It had been suggested in other forums that un-installing it from Device Manager would make windows re-detect the hardware, but in this case there is no device to un-install!
Please help me help you help us all!
Here are my specs:
MSI K8N Diamond Plus(AMD socket 939)
Antec 430 Watt ATX PSU
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (2.4gHz)
Corsair 1gb(2x 512mb) DDR400(PC3200) RAM
nVidia GeForce 6800 GS
WD 250gb HD
Windows 2000 ProfessionalBOSSKILLER:
The OS did not pick up the card. I saw no difference when placing it in both PCI slots, onboard sound disabled in the BIOS for both cases. IOAPIC is enabled and MPS Table is set to 1.4
Kane3_162:
I don't have any working floppy disks(all I had remaining were tested and failed!) But I did try flashing the BIOS using the LiveUpdate feature on the MSI website. The latest version they listed was 1.2, I was very paranoid about doing this without the ability to make a rescue disk... Where did you get version 1.34?
The BIOS update did not help in detecting either the onboard or PCI audio; I became suspicious of the PCI card itself, and dug around in the closet for another, found this ancient ct4740 16bit SB card and it was detected!
So now I have PCI sound, an updated BIOS, and a vaguely stupid feeling for not suspecting the first replacement card... Thanks again everyone, I hope this thread turns up in search engines everywhere, as a lot of good advice was given despite the simplicity of the problem: A burnt out onboard Sound Blaster Live! 24bit(P17) ... It happens
This seems like a coincidence, but I remember rolling back the nVidia Forceware Beta drivers before this happened. I went from 163.44, which was force-installed with the BioShock demo, and did a rollback to 94.24 because it was messing up a few games. Rebooted once and everything seemed ok, shut the system down and next time it was powered up the onboard sound was toast... But then it could have also been the wind storms and power fluctuations in the neighborhood, who knows... -
*FIXED* No sound and 'No Audio Device' in Control Panel. *FIX
I?m having a problem with my sound. Basically all I get is a system sound, which means no sounds from itunes but the error prompt sounds still play. I?m tempted to say that this is a detection issue because of several things:
-First, when looking in the ?sounds and audio devices? in the control panel I get grayed out selections and a ?no audio device?.
-Secondly, when running the directX diagnostic tool (typing ?dxdiag? in the ?run? window) I get several troubling indications. First under device I have no manufacturer or product ID. Second under drivers I have (copied from dxdiag text file):
Driver Name: ctaud2k.sys
Driver Version: 5.2.000.96 (English)
Driver Attributes: Final Retail
WHQL Logo'd: Yes
Date and Size: 8//2006 4:45:38, 499584 bytes
Other Files:
Seems hunky-doorey but then I have a note at the bottom that reads:
Sound Test Result: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x88780078 (No driver)
I have seen another similar post that seemed to have the same problem, but they didn?t provide much information and the fix was to pull out the audio card, run start up, turn it off, and then put it back in and run start up. If this is what needs to be done, could I have a picture or something of what the sound card looks like?
This problem started when I tried to update my sound card and since then my sound has been? possessed? or prone to working at sometimes and then (most of the time)failing at others.
Here is the dxdiag.txt file without the lengthy directShow filters and directx components:

K9N2 Diamond and Xtreme Audio Card
The sound card that came with this board came with a driver/program CD. I've followed directions and ran the installation, but when I click on the Audio Console Launcher to configure it, I get a warning that, "The current selected audio device is not supported by the application. Do you want to select another audio device now?"
If I click "NO"...thats it.
If I click "YES", I get another warning saying, "The Creative Audio Device Selection module cannot be launched. The module may be missing from your system. You may need to reinstall your application."
If I run the CD again, to reinstall the so-called module, I still run into the same problem.
The problem really is I can't use my headset w/mic for online gaming. Headset shows up in the Playback Devices but there is no "configure" option--greyed out.
What seems to be the malfunction?I think he have eaxtly same probelm some i has whit the sound card .

[SOLVED] Choppy sound with Intel audio card
Ever since I bought this laptop and installed Arch, I have experienced this annoying choppiness.
What happens is that when I highlight other windows, under the minimum memory/cpu load the sound is truncated. I can't listen to music pleasantly on my laptop, and I can't stand it.
My laptop is a HP 530, with an integrated Intel audio card. This is the output from hwd -s:
Sound(a) : 82801G ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller module: snd-hda-intel
I have 1Gb of RAM, and the processor doesn't seem very busy when the sound is truncated. This happens under any DE/WM - even in tty!
For what is worth, I had problems with the speakers not muting when the headphones were plugged in, and I have followed the method indicated here.
Thanks for your time.Auto is the default, it might not be resolving the model correctly (that's the case with my laptop). Try model=hp.
If that doesn't work, you could try turning off power saving:
options snd-hda-intel power_save=0 -

EVGA 9800GT
320gb WD SATA 3.0

Samsung IDE DVD-R/W

Installed Windows MCE 2005 w/SP3 and everything up to date driver wise. Problem is HD Audio device is showing up twice in device manager. One shows installed, one shows that no drivers are loaded. I have uninstalled the device and uninstalled the drivers, and reloaded everything. Used drivers from CD and from download, but not luck. Any ideas on what could cause 2 of the same audio devices to show up and only one to actually load, besides a general hardware failure on the motherboard? That would make sense, if either the 9800GT or the K9N2 had and HDMI port. Sorry guys that's a no go. This is the first time I have ever run into this issue. 2 of the same audio devices showing up in device manager. One has drivers and loads, other shows unknown HD audio device and will not install drivers at all....

Bluetooth not working and not appearing in the devices manager
My bluetooth suddenly is not working anymore and i can't see it in the device manager.
I tried to reinstall the drivers but the problem persist. I have one strange USB problem happening too at the device manager, and it just appeared after the bluetooth problem. How can I solve it? One image of the problem is attached!Try to update the IRST driver, and see if it helps the problem.

Hello everyone,
I updated my lenovo ideacentre b540p from windows 7 home premium to windows 8.1 pro. I have two issues that came up after the upgrade.
1. I can no longer access the Lenovo rescue system 3.0 by pressing the F2 button during startup to boot into recovery mode which was possible when I was using windows 7 and because of this I am unable to install the software and drivers that came with the PC.
2. In device manager the multimedia controller driver is not installed. It shows a yellow sign in the other devices group. I have tried different version from the lenovo support site but none of them work. The PC was shipped without a CD containing the drivers but if I can access the rescue system, I believe I will find the driver I need for the multimedia controller.
Solved!

Hi RR7,
You might have a look at this page: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaCentre-Desktops-Home-Servers/Windows-8-Recovery-partition-not-recogn...
It's Windows 8 related, but you'll better understand what may happen when your cloned HD has not the same size as the original one.
interesting post, thanks. sadly i'm not sure this really helps. i didnt find what i expected.
the reagent.xml only has two references to offset, and they both refer to the partition that contains windows 7. i have changed this offset on the cloned disk to match the actual partition offset but it makes no difference.
i don't see any reference to the hidden lenovo partition or its offset in the windows recovery.
i also cant see any reference to it in the BCD on either the source or clonded disk.
all i see if pressing F2 on the source OEM when powering on loads a special lenovo recovery environment, and doing the same thing on the clonded disk just shows the windows 7 boot loader option for choosing to boot windows or do a memory test.
my question still remains, what is the magic thats happening when i press F2? -
No Wlan card in device manager - Satellite Pro L300
Internet works OK sometimes but then I get "no network.
When I check I find the network adaptor (Atheros) has "disappeared from the device manager.
If I restart the PC it reappears and I can connect again.
I have defaulted the Bios and updated the driver but it makes no differenceFirstly update the BIOS.
After the BIOS update set the BIOS to default settings.
Save the changes.
Now install the latest WLan driver from this page:

Reboot the unit and configure WLan again.
Good luck! -
No sound from RealTek audio card? [Solved]
I can't hear any sound from my laptop. This is what I executed:
pacman -S alsa-utils
gpasswd -a yourusername audio
alsamixer
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
alsactl store
nano /etc/rc.conf
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network crond alsa)
Last edited by Zdravko (2008-04-22 12:36:38)If I understand you correctly, you have installed all required alsa packages and tried to configure. What doesn't work is attempting to push up the volume via alsamixer/aumix etc., unmuting also does not work.
Am I correct?
If so, you may have a similar issue to what happened to me a ways back. Is your current kernel up to date? The problem I had involved the fact that my sound card (though it was extremely common and, well, sh*tty) was affected by a feature regression in the ALSA code and an incompatibility with kernel in what was then [current]. I had to wait for the kernel to catch up to ALSA to do anything, but the regression had to be fixed before I could do anything useful.
Moral of the story (also known as the 'tl;dr' or 'too long; didn't read' version) - Try updating your kernel if all else has failed. If nothing useful comes out of that, try searching the ALSA site. -
ISight makes croaking sounds and produces audio dropouts in recordings
Hi!
This is weird and hopefully not normal?!?
My new iSight made these short cracking sounds (kind of like scratching over sheet of paper) from the beginning.
Once when starting up the Mac and all along during video recording or conferencing.
That alone wouldn't be such a big problem but audio is very weak too, since it produces drop-outs and other weird noise especially during conferencing or even just during skype phoning (no video).
While trying to record that sound (iMic) I found out that its not possible because other Audio In dropped out too, while iSight is croaking :-S
Of course I tried out everything I could and the problem is still there even when the iSight is the only peripheral (USB and FW) on my G5.
ISight is the perfect webcam and makes awesome picture and sound quality besides the mentioned issues. Hopefully I don't have to send it back.
Thanks for your help buddies! How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional should help you find out whether you need to have your new iSight repaired or exchanged under warranty.
If your G5 is otherwise reliable and stable, because you are having the same problem with your iSight when driven by different apps, your iSight, iSight's connecting cable, or your G5s firewire or connections would seem to be the most likely suspects. -
Delayed system sounds and no audio in web browser or itunes
HP Envy 14 B4B15UA#ABA Windows 7
No changes to the system recently (that I'm aware of). Suddenly I have no sound in iTunes or Chrome. The volume equalizer doesn't show anything when sounds should be playing, and iTunes doesn't even try to play. Also, system sounds are on about a seven second delay. When I try to configure my speakers, I get an error that says "failed to play test tone", but then it plays several seconds later. System "clicks" and error tones are also delayed.
I have tried searching for audio driver updates (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC), but it is current. I have tried plugging headphones in, no dice. I have restarted several times, and installed windows updates. I have restored system defaults in case I accidentally changed something. I even went into the godforsaken Beats controller to see if something was wonky there. Nothing. I have no idea why this is happening. Please help.Hey thatpurpleone,
I see that you're not getting any sound from the speakers.
Follow this Document even though you mention there wasn't nothing that changed with the system.

I don't know how to proceed. I didn't have sound after installing Windows 7 inot iMac OX 10.6.7 (64bit) After unsuccessful attempt to upgrade the driver from the BootCamp file, I deleted the driver from the Sound and Game controlled hoping that I would allow me to automatically install the correct driver from Boot camp.
Now the Sound Video Game controller disappeared from the Device Manager
How can I find out which is the correct sound driver for my computer (The Speaker Properties only say:WIndows)?
How can I install it without seing the Sound and Game controller in the Device Manager? When you say "manually download", you mean from the BootCamp File on Snow Leopard, or from the Internet.
My additional problem is that the "Sound and Video Game Controller" disappeared from the Device Manager when I removed the previous driver. I don't find the place where I can reistall the new driver. -
Audigy , Sound and Audio Devices Properties 'No Audio Device' appears
<p class="MsoNormal">Out of the blue, in the Sound and Audio Devices Properties, on the Volume tab ?No Audio Device? appears.
On the Sound tab of Sound and Audio Devices Properties, my Default Device says ?Modem # Line play back and is my only drop down choice. I made no configuration changes or installed any new software, it just stopped working.
I have searched for solutions, to no avail. I have an ?!? next to the Microsoft Kernel Audio Mixer in Device Manager that upon re-install displays a message that there was a problem installing this hardware(MEDIA) I/O operation has been aborted because of either a threadd exit or an application request(both installing from driver folder and recovery CD).
I don?t particularly care what sound device I have, just one that works again. I?ve uninstalled the sound devices and let them re-install on reboot and have checked the BIO settings (I don?t have any sound related settings there).
In Admin Tools > Services ?Windows Audio? is started and set to Automatic. When I manually try to play a windows sound in the Sounds tab I get an error message that says my sound card may be in use.
Under Sound and Audio Devices in Device Manager I currently have(when I ?Show Hidden?):
-Audio codecs
-Legacy Audio Drivers
-Legacy Video Capture Devices
-Media Control Devices
-Video codecs
Don't know what else to try. Any help would be appreciated.cesario85 wrote:

Audigy shares IRQ with IDE controller and firewire controller. This is not good.
NOTE: I suppose you're running your PC on "Standard PC" -mode (since IRQ's >5 not showing). If so, you can try to assign IRQ for the PCI slot, Audigy is installed, manually from BIOS. See your motherboard manual page 4-26.
Can you check if your PC is running as "Standard PC" and not as "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" (Device Manager --> Computer). Make it "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" --> you get more IRQs (virtual) in use.
NOTE: You may need to reinstall OS to get this done.
Also you may need to enable APIC mode on BIOS.
How To:
A) Go to 'Device Manager' a short cut to get there is "Right Click" on the My computer Icon on your desktop (Control Panel --> System --> Hardware),
B) Next click on 'Computer', then double click on 'Standard PC'. Then select 'Driver' and then 'Update Driver'.
C) At this point you will see a screen pop up asking you to do this "Automatically" or Select 'Display a list of the known drivers for this device', - Choose this option.
D) Next you will see - 'Show all hardware of this device class'. Now you can select "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" in the list shown in the window to the right.
E) Now Windows needs/will re-start and re-install all hardware/ settings needed to run in this configuration.

ITunes killed my sound card (code 52 in device manager)
I am running Win 7 x64 and installed iTunes for the first time yesterday and today I have no sound. I looked in the device manager and I have a yellow exclamation mark next to my sound card (Asus Xonar DS PCI). In the error description it says:-
'Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)'
After googling I notice this is a known issue with iTunes. Normally this problem affects optical drives in which case it is fixed by deleting the UpperFilters somewhere in the registry.
BUT what do I do in the case of a broken sound card?
Grateful for any help!Sorry, when I said 'kill' i meant it stopped it from playing sound not actually damaging the hardware. I am guessing iTunes must be installing an unsigned driver which hooks into the sound card driver and hence windows believes the sound card driver is unsigned. And because 64-bit windows requires drivers to be signed it blocks the device from starting. Just my guess correct me if i'm wrong.
To be honest, i cant see a different pci slot working as it seems more like a problem on the driver level rather than IRQ conflicts etc.
Changing sound card may work because it would be using a different driver altogether (Realtek HD audio), but that would be £40 wasted on my new sound card. Actually I might be better off selling it and getting better speakers instead.
If I get the time, I will try once more installing itunes with the Xonar and then with the Realtek.
Will post results when i get them.
