No sound, but chip detected

Right. My laptop's sound chip is an Intel 82801DB-ICH4, which is the exact chip used as an example in the ALSA article in the Archwiki, but following the instructions yields no result for my sound. Any ideas?
The snd-pcsp module was not found and the pcspkr one said something about checking dmesg.
The article stated that in the MODULES section of /etc/rc.conf, there should be snd-intel8x0, and snd-pcsp, which I have put. snd-intel8x0 sttarts without a hitch as far as I can see, while snd-pcsp says
FATAL: Module 'snd-pcsp' not found
(something like that)
Would anyone try and solve this? Until then, i'll blacklist snd-pcsp and pcspkr.
Also, does ALSA need to be loaded as a daemon?
EDIT: Adding my dmesg output in case.

Hello Firepower,
I had the same difficulty. I have the same sound hardware in my Thinkpad T42. What I needed to do was add my user to the audio group. It must be done as root:
$ su -
password: XXXXXXXX
# gpasswd -a <your username> audio
BTW, my daemon's string in /etc/rc.conf looks like this:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !network netfs crond dbus hal wicd fam)
You should not need to add ALSA as a daemon. It is a set of kernel modules (and some userland utilities), and it will load at boot time if the hardware is detected.
If that does not help, please supply the results of the commands:
lspci
lsmod | grep '^snd' | column -t
ls -l /dev/snd
Regards

  • Fatality HS-1000 USB Headset (No Sound but is detected by PC)

I don't belei've I've ever been so frustrated with a company and their products. This is my second headset that I've bought and both within 2 months of purchase are dead.
I'm running Windows XP 32 bit. The headset is being found by the USB port and the Creative Volume Panel sees that the headset is there. The controller on the head set works yet I get no sound what so ever.
I've updated firmware, I've installed drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled and still have no sound. Same thing happend on my other headset on the same PC.
edit: Upon uninstalling the mouse that I had previously installed the headset now has sound. When I reinstall the mouse the headset fizzles and looses all sound.

    Hello M_Squared,
The settings on the entertainment mode should also be applicable for gaming. Most of the sound settings should be available on the game itself. The rest of your questions can be answered by this link. Under Documents, you can find the alchemy quick start (how to guide) and alchemy FAQ's. Under Lists, you should find the tested games that works with the alchemy software.
    Hope this helps.

  • Audigy 2 ZS: Stero Sound, but not device not detect

I'm using an Audigy 2 ZS card, driver version 5.2..442 with Windows XP.
The card produces stereo sound, but nothing in the other speakers in my 5. setup.
When I try to load up the Creative Speaker Settings, I got a 'Speaker Settings' error dialog stating "The audio device supported by this application is not detected."
There are no apparent problems with the device when checking the device manager.
    Thanks for any help.

I solved my problem by changing to driver version 5.2.3.00. Creative Applications such as speaker settings load without error messages, and sound is 5., not just stero.

  • [Amixer] Invalid Argument - Sound but not levels

    \o/
I recently bought a USB Headset. I'm using ALSA without Pulseaudio. The sound is working fine, but I have a problem setting levels etc.
When I open amixer and the default card is set to the headset, the mixer fails to load with
amixer: Mixer default load error: Invalid argument
I have read the whole internets about this. The usb-snd kernel module is loaded properly.
Some intel users have fixed their issue with using mode=generic. But if i'm correct this will disable 7.1 playback ability.
    This is the output from

A frickload of kudos to anybody that will either be able to recommend an alternative mixer (without having to install OSS/Pulse) or be able to link or recommend a fix.
    Kind regards,
    Mastermind

So I just spent another couple of hours battling with alsa.
I went from sound but no mixer, to no sound at all. And then back to having sound again after 4 hours of command mashing. All that after just a weekend in suspend/standby.
The only difference I could detect was that the subdevice on the card changed, but simply defining (and alsa restoring) that one in the ~/.asoundrc did not do the trick.
I also came across a more detailed error with the crashing alsamixer.
/usr/share/alsa/init/default:171: value write error: Invalid argument
/usr/share/alsa/init/default:185: value write error: Invalid argument
Commenting these lines did not fix the error.
    Some more outputs:
    [root@Blitz mastermind]# alsactl restore

  • HELP NEEDED! My wife's 5c won't recognise on my laptop anymore. I plug it in and the laptop makes a sound but won't show up the phone. I only recently discovered this problem when I upgraded. It will recognise my 5c and even the iPad but not her 5c

I discovered this problem when I upgraded my iPhone 4 to a 5c.
My laptop will recognise my 5c and even the wife's iPad but won't recognuse her 5c, when I plug it in it makes a sound but just doesn't show up in iTunes.
It DID work on my laptop as recently as November when I backed up her phone and updated her software but like I say ever since I upgraded it just won't recognise her 5c but does mine.
I just can't think what is wrong? I haven't messed around with anything on the laptop or messed around with the wife's settings on her 5c
    HELP!!!!

I would test with another computer and another cable
if it the device would not be detected by any computer I
would say that it's connector was broken

  • Though I have connected my receiver using thunderbolt cable/hdmi it does not emit sound, but i can see the display

My imac does not detect the thunderbolt. so cannot select external speakers though I have connected the mac using thunderbolt to hdmi. cannot receive sound but video is seen.

I have one thunderbolt port and one mini display port.
No Mac has both Thunderbolt and Mini DisplayPort.  They are both Thunderbolt.  A Mini Disp;layPort cable or adapter will work in a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port.
A Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable or adapter can handle both audio and video, but some older ones are video only.
You may have a broken audio wire in your cable.  Try a new cable or Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.  Make sure it says it will handle both audio and video.

  • TS1894 After sync my iphone my videos have sound but no picture in quicktime.

My videos that I sync through iTunes have sound but a black screen when trying to watch through Quicktime.

    for mirror no
for displaying photos or playing video from supported apps it should work
I have the same cable and the component (same connectors but 5 of them vs. composite's 3 (where 2 being audio))
both my composite and component works with my tv with both my ipod touch 3g iphone4 and ipad2
composite really is the lowests quality format guess it's because of the resolution that it support that it does not support mirror
and the reason iphone4 does not support mirror is because it's video chip don't support converting what it display into  H.264 in realtime same reason why only newer macs support airplay mirror too

  • Satellite L750D - Window Media Player has sound but no pictures

I have a Toshiba Laptop Satellite L750D, Win 7 Home Permium. I don't know why Win Media player just has sound but no pictures. Please some one help fix this problem. I don't have a recovery dics. Where can I down load it? I would very much appeciate your help. Hien

Your issue is likely, but not necessarily a corrupted or missing codec since you haven't actually confirmed whether your problem is with just one disc or all discs nor if they ever worked on this system before.
Installing VLC is a good idea, but it's a considerate application and won't tamper or try to repair a busted codec and will more often avoids tampering or accidentally repairing any detected whether it's already working or likely broken like yours. That's one of the reasons VLc is so highly recommended such as they way it was repeatedly suggested to you.
A question to ask if your problem is being caused by a few discs, are they custom burned or commercially pressed boutique films since most mainstream DVD's use the same MPEG-2 codec for video and audio and failed video but working audio is usually a clue about a split format disc that has simpler audio streams but obscure video formats that can result in an issue just like yours.
In either case and if none of that is of interest, I can relate and suggest you keep any installed VLc's and download KLite because it is nothing but varying degrees of CODEC's including obscure ones and is fairly aggressive in detecting and seamlessly repairing corrupted codecs while offering more configuration options than most people want and more than many commercial video applications offer.
Visit http://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm and choose the "Mega" or 64Bit package but 64bit systems can successfully backport the 32bit set if you feel its necessary to.
You can also potentially skip the KLite process by diagnosing your codecs with Nirsofts InstalledCodec tool, a single file executable no install / no reboot but I don't get the impression you're prepared to really do much at that level and that's fine but it might be needless effort in your case.
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/installed_codec.html
But something you definitely need to stop and wonder about is what happened to crush your codec since they don't normally suffer damage until some insidious piece of badware like your favorite iLivid and mine gets into your computer to raise holy hell forever. If that could possibly be what happened to you, the circumstances of how you managed to pick it up and anything else are things you can keep to yourself but consider it a spyware affliction and one I don't make lightly and is something I rarely suggest since it is the overused excuse at the Microsoft forums to blame everything on spyware instead of poorly written OS code.

  • Mplayer has sound, but Smplayer has no sound?

    heya,
I have a Lenovo X200 tablet, with Arch64 installed on it.
    I have Mplayer SVN-r31040-4.4.3 and Smplayer 0.6.9 (SVN r3447).
Previously, both of these worked fine, However, recently, after a Pacman upgrade, when I attempted to play a movie, Mplayer seems to play the movie with sound, but Smplayer has no sound at all.

    heya,
    Aha! That worked .
I changed from OSS to Also, and it works fine now.
Any idea why it changed like that? Could an update have caused it?
Also, there were other ones, like "alsa (0.0 - HDA INTEL)" and "alsa (0.1 - HDA INTEL)". Not sure what they were there for.
    Cheers,

  • ALSA: snd-via82xx - No sound but system gets very slow

    Hello!
I'm using the Onboard sound chip on my Fujitsu-Siemens D1607 mainboard. It' A Sigmatel STAC9758/59 Chip and runs with snd_via82xx module (worked with SuSE 9.1 so far, at least stereo-out but no LineIn). Now when i load the module as discribed in the ALSA howto an unmute Master and PCM i still get no sound, but my system gets very slow (applications start ten times slower, loading websites also takes much more time). But snd_via82xx seems to load without errors.
ArchLinux is uptodate and i'm using a custom Kernel 2.6.7 because i need some special settings for my AVM Fritz!Card DSL.
    Does anybody have any hint?

in dmesg and /var/log/messages i do not find anything uncommon. Most of the messages are status messages from pppd .

  • Ipod Video 80gb with click wheel has sound, but no audio

My ipod video 80gb with click wheel has sound, but no audio.  I can hear the clicking of the wheel and selections made through the headphones, but I cannot get music, video, etc. to play audio.  I did the 5 R's and installed a new headphone jack prior to posting here.  I am all out of ideas and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you connect it to an iPod Dock Stereo to check if there is music, coming out, if not the Hard Reset would solve your problem or else the Audio chip has called it a day.
I know you mentioned doing the 5Rs, but did you see the Apple Logo and the language prompt? Sorry, most of the users here, doesn't do the Hard Reset correctly.
Try the iPod Hard Reset -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON, then release the button
    Select your preferred language.
This wont delete or erase any song/data on your iPod Classic.
See this Apple Support Article on 5Rs

  • My movies and music videos won't show up on screen, I can hear the sound but not see the video how do I fix this?

My movies and music videos won't show up on my computer screen, I can hear the sound but not see the video how do I fix this? I'm not sure what to do as far as turning my purchased movie into DVD goes either. I just want to put the movie onto a DVD disc but my itunes won't even show that I have a blank disc in the drive, I'm not sure what is wrong or how to fix this, any help at all would be much appreciated.

    Hi @anthony7722 ,
Thank you for your query, I will do my best to help!
I grasp that you uninstalled the Intel graphic driver and the catalyst control.  You reinstalled the Intel driver and now you can view and hear videos on the Internet but you are unable to set the resolution as high as previously.
When I checked the specifications for your notebook I see that you have switchable graphics.
Here are two links that I believe will help.
Overview of Switchable Graphics or Dual GPUs
Switchable Graphics on Notebooks Configured with Intel and ATI GPUs
Here is a link to HP Pavilion dv7-6150eb Entertainment Notebook PC Drivers
    Please try this process.
    1. Download the chipset driver, and both graphic drivers and save them  but do not install them yet
2, Delete the chipset driver and install the updated one.
    3. restart your notebook
4.Delete the Intel driver and install the updated one
    5. restart your notebook
    6. Delete the AMD driver and install the updated driver.
You should now have a Catalyst Control Center.
This should now allow you to use the higher graphic card which should support the higher resolution.
    I hope this helped.

I just got it back from the apple store and they reset it (becuase it kept shutting down and not turning back on).
I put in a new password because i needed to start over from factory settings, but now it doesnt let me log in anymore. (I don't know if this is because it doesnt accpet my password, or I forgot my password in less than 5 minutes, or because when i typed in my new password, i typed it in wrong twice)
Command R doesnt work, all i hear is a sound, but nothing happens.

What I don't understand is why it is rejecting a password I am creating.
Perhaps the password you are creating is too short, or has characters that are not allowed, or is not secure enough because it is a word in a dictionary.
FileVault may have standards for what it considers an acceptable password. If the password is part of the 128-bit encryption scheme, it might have to be 16 characters, for example. (Don't know if that is true, but it's a possibility.) Check your documentation for password requirements.
