It doesn't defeat the purpose to lower the resolution. When you choose the size you can read, the extra pixels are used to make the text and graphics more detailed, closer to the high print resolution humans have been accustomed to reading on paper for hundreds of years. That is the difference compared to the coarse screen resolution of a conventional (non-Retina) screen.

  • ADE reader defeats the purpose

Have been trying to send feedback to Adobe for ADE but apparently Adobe isn't interested: ADE isn't included in the list of software in the feedback form. Am hoping that perhaps someone is listening in here.
Here's my beef: I am a firm supporter of DRM, but Adobe's ADE is so bad of an ereader that it defeats its own purpose.
My book uses multiple images, most of which are screen shots of instructions and so legibility is critical. Many images have a height of 800 pixels and are thus too tall to fit on a typical 15.4" laptop screen, smaller tablet or mobile phone; and images set to 600 pixels wide are too wide for small devices. So in order for the images to be scaled, I cannot set a fixed pixel size; I have to use "height=100%" or "width=100%" value. Unfortunately, ADE interpolates the images so badly that they look like crap. I would expect ADE's image handling to be on par with at least Amazon's Kindle apps, but no; Kindle apps mop the floor with ADE.
If I then use a fixed pixel size so that the images are not interpolated, tall images are cut off the laptop screen at about 650 pixels while wide images are cut off at the sides on smaller devices. And unfortunately, ADE doesn't allow the user to scroll down between pages, or from side to side; it only jumps from page to page.
It's the same with the Nook, Sony, and Kobo for PC apps that can read ADE DRMed books: on my 15.4" laptop, the Sony reader app cuts off images taller than 525 pixels, and Kobo and Nook apps cut images off at about 500 pixels high.
Users can install popular free programs such as Calibre, which has an ereader that scrolls down as well as jumps from page to page. Unfortunately, Calibre cannot open DRMed ebooks. Ditto for Sigil.
So now the tablet, PC, or mobile user has to find an ereader app that will both open ADE files AND either does a better job of image handling or has a scroll function for viewing tall fixed-pixel images. By this time the user -- who has most likely purchased the book through Kobo, Nook, or Sony and is trying to read it on their app -- has said "screw this" AND is cursing the book publisher and vowing never to buy a DRMed book again. Or has gone instead to find an app to remove the DRM, again defeating the purpose.
Since the majority of tablets and all laptops have a screen width equal to or greater than 600 pixels, one can safely use a fixed image size for anything 600 pixels or less in width and not suffer the horrible uprezzing that occurs if one uses a "width=100%" value; and just leave mobile phone users to suffer.
But with tall images, it's not so simple. If ADE would just allow downward scrolling, the problem would be solved: one could safely use a fixed pixel value and let the laptop user scroll down through the image.
So why has Adobe missed such an obvious feature? And until ADE does a better job of image handling, its ereader will continue to be subpar. It's not good enough to assume most people have a dedicated ereading device; many are using tablets and it's as if Adobe is pretending these consumers do not exist.

I understand your frustration.  However, you're blaming the wrong things.
I don't think you understand a lot about ADE.  And I think you're confusing
much about the industry standards with what ADE does and is designed to
do.  Also, don't confuse ADE the epublication management software with DRM,
which is a set of specifications implemented by the Adobe Content Reader
software.  It's only a 'library management' application.
Let's look at your prime - perhaps only - point: 'oversize' images.  You
haven't told us what format the ebooks with these images are in, and I'm
going to guess that it's a .pdf, because many textbooks use that format.
ADE does not support some of the functions in the more advanced versions of
.pdf (see the HELP section for the specifics).  Neither do Amazon, SONY,
B&N and Apple.  That doesn't prevent a publisher from putting them out
there.  You can say that they should, because, after all, .pdf is an Adobe
format.  However, ADE was written in the 1990's, so its basic framework is
more than a dozen years old.  Lots of things change during that time.  The
latest version of Adobe Reader 'might' do the job for you.
Although old, Adobe hasn't kept ADE static.  ADE has embraced reader
software on tablets - Aldiko is the most popular.  But it doesn't support
most of them natively.  And it doesn't support all manner of other devices
    - Apple's to be most obvious, but other Android powered devices also.  So,
ranting about what ADE 'should' do is probably not going to be productive -
it is what it is, and it's going to stay that way.
Yes, you can decide to 'eliminate' DRM protection - there are several
programs out in cyberspace that will do that.   And they all are helping
you break the law if you decide to do that.  But what does that
accomplish?  Not much, because there are better options.  If ADE isn't
doing it for you, try one of the other software suites that do the same
job.  Despite your comments, Calibre has a wide range of features that may
help your situation.  Bluefire Reader and Overdrive are the others I'd
suggest looking at.  If the ebooks are DRM-protected, each of these other
packages have implemented DRM protection according to the same rules that
Adobe used in ADE.  They have to - it's the way that the industry has
implemented copy protection.  Apple, SONY, B&N and Amazon have implemented
DRM differently, and their formats are not compatible with ADE.  However,
you can use them with their ereaders successfully.  I don't know, however,
whether they'll be any better at managing the images.  Try the latest
version of Adobe Reader if the texts are in .pdf format.  That might work
    for you.

Where are the masters actually stored upon conversion from Aperture to Photos? Photos?
The master files are stored on your drive, but they are not actually stored "in" any folder. Folders are really just special files that store various bits of information about the files associated with that folder, including links to where they actually are stored. That's why you can "move" a file from one folder to another very quickly: all that you really are doing is moving the link & other info from one folder to the other folder, while the file itself stays where it was.
Because of this, it is possible for more than one folder to link to the same file -- in the Finder it looks just like there are two copies of the file, one in each folder, but there really is just the one copy. From the description in the Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries doc, it looks like that's what happens when you import your iPhoto library into Photos -- both the old iPhoto Library "file" (which actually is a set of folders & subfolders of files) & the Photos Library (also consisting of folders & files) contain links to the master files, but like the Apple doc says, there really is just one set of master files being stored.
This is very similar to the way Time Machine backups look like they have multiple copies of the same unique file, one in each time-stamped backup folder, but there really is only one copy on the Time Machine drive. My guess is Apple is using hard links for this, which means the actual master files will not be deleted from the file system as long as at least one link remains to each of them.
So you should be safe in deleting the old iPhotos Library once you are absolutely sure you don't need it, but to be sure, if it was me I would make a backup just in case, or better yet just leave it alone.

  • WHAT is the use of a retina display when you can't watch DVD movies? what's the purpose of a super thin retina macbook pro when you need to buy an external optical drive? doesn't it defeat the purpose already?

i don't care if my macbook is a little thicker as long as i don't need to burden myself of an external optical drive just for a simple  and common task of watching/listening to discs.

I'm confused, why did you choose to buy the retina model if you don't like it? This is exactly why Apple still manufacture/sell the 'old' style MBP which is thicker and has an optical drive built-in!

    Thanks!

I am not too technology savvy. So for those like me who don't quite grasp all these cards - do either the regular Verizon or AT&T plans that you can easily purchase work overseas?  If not, do I have to buy these micro sim cards in each country I visit?  And the regular iPad wifi (without any cellular plan) will work anywhere in the world?

  • I rented a movie on Apple TV rent now watch now ....it had to Own load which defeats the the purpose ..if I wanted to watch later I would have chose rent now watch later .   So I was not able to watch the movie when I wanted  to ...why did it sat rent anD

I rented a move in iTunes " rent and watch now not rent now watch later however the movie was not accessible to watch .  It sort defeats the purpose of renting a movie etiquette watch right away .

I had the same issue with my apple tv 3rd generation. I rented Sinister and selected the "rent and watch now" option. Half way through the movie I accidentally pressed the menu button. When I looked for the rented movie on my apple tv I could not find it. Not even above the movie pannel where "purchased" and "top movies" comes up on the main menu. the apple tv suggests to go to settings>downloads but I don't have that option. I did go to settings> itunes store> check rentals but that didnt work either. It took too long to even check. Thank you because this SOLUTION worked great.
SOLUTION: How to reset apple tv 3 3rd generation to view rented movies:on the apple tv remote: press and hold "menu" to go to the main menu. Select SETTINGS> GENERAL >RESET >RESET ALL SETTINGS. After the apple tv resets, input all your information again and your rented movies should be visible when you cruise above the "movies" section. THANK YOU!!
Apple needs to solve this issue because honestly it took me 3 hours and a half to watch a movie that only lasted 2 BECAUSE I wast trying to solve the issue, reseting and all. blahh.

Canon support told me that the I-pad printer driver would not work with any printer, including HP.  They offered to fix the problem for $50.  I turned them down.
If they really could fix the problem, they must be saying to update the printers firmware. Look on the cannon website & update the priners firmware.  While you at it, update the routers firmware.

HP Pavilion dv6135nr Notebook internal speakers have stopped working.  I can hear sounds on headphones but no sound via the internal speakers.  A search on HP customer care for my notebook yielded the download recommendation below, even though I had not stated my problem.  However, executing this download did NOT resolve the problem.  Please advise regarding resolution to inoperable speakers.  I do not know if all of my sound and audio settings are correct, but the mute is not on and the volume controls are properly set.  The default device is Conexant High Definition Audio output, per the sound and audio devices properties hardware  tab the device status states "this device is working properly."  Is it possible that a Skype or Foxfire update is in conflict with this device?  If so, how do I resolve this situation?
    Thank you.

Re: Fixes issue where the notebook speakers do not work after headphones or earphones are used for a while and then unplugged.
HOW DO YOU FIX THIS?? I cannot find the correct Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio that works with my computer...
    My computer:
    VISTA
    HP Compaq 2230s Notebook PC
Everytime I use my headphones for more than an hour or two, the **bleep** audio will not play on my notebook's speakers, just through the headphones. Usually restarting a few times resolves the problem, but not this time. If I knew that HP computers sucked this much I would never have spent so much money on this one!!!
Can you please tell me how to fix this problem once and for all? Thanks!!

  • Recording audio from the web without recording sound from the internal microphone...

Is there a way to record audio sound sources, for example a webcast in a browser, without without also recording sound thru the built in internal microphone on the MacPro laptop running Mountain Lion?

You need something along the lines of Audio Hijack Pro or WireTap Studio.  The latter is currently broken in Lion and Mountain Lion for your purposes, so that leaves Audio Hijack Pro.  Neither is free, but both are worth their asking price (well, WireTap Studio will be once they deign to repair it).

  • Warbled sound using the built in mic on a Macbook Pro

    Hello all,
I just got Logic 8 and I'm still in the testing/experiment stages. Right now I'm simply recording my voice, through the *built in mic*, on my Macbook Pro. I'm recording at 192k, 24 bit to test out the sample rate differences and quality of sound. In my audio settings, on my macbook pro, I noticed that it only goes up to 96k. I'm getting audio overload messages, in Logic, and it sounds to me there is a slight "warbled" sound in the recording. Very much like the way a cheap mp3 sounds, underwatery/warbled/cheap. It's subtle but I can detect it.
Is this because the I'm using the internal mic?
Do I need to match my audio settings, on my computer, to Logic's sample rate settings?
Is that why I'm getting audio overload warnings and the distortion?
    Any input will help.
    Thanx in advance
    TTW

The built in mic in your MBP probably costs a dime. It's completely useless for recording except maybe as a quick sketchpad for remembering a melody. They put it in for Skype/iChat purposes, not for professional recording. A more or less decent microphone is at least $100, plus you'll need a proper interface with a mike preamp to connect it to your Mac. Even then, the chances that you'll hear a discernable difference between 44.1 kHz/96/192 are slight.

I have a 3rd generation wifi iPad and there is no sound in the device. Can someone please help?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

To solve some sound problems, just follow these simple steps
    1. Go to Settings
    2. Tap on General
    3. Tap on Reset
    4. Tap on Reset All Settings
What this effectively does is to reset some of your Settings to factory default. It’s not a complete removal of settings. It removes all of your preferences for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do No Disturb, Notifications, General, Sounds, Brightness & Wallpaper and Privacy. It doesn’t affect your data. All of your email accounts will remain intact, as well as any SMS text or iMessages.

  • While defining a columnar table, what is the purpose of column store type

    Hi folks
I have two questions related to columnar table definition.
    1. What is the purpose of column store type.
While defining a columnar table, what is the purpose of column store type (STRING ,CS_FIXEDSTRING,CS_INT etc) , when I define a table using the UI I see that the column is showing STRING but when I goto EXPORT SQL it does not show.  Is this mandatory or optional ?
2.VARCHAR Vs. CHAR - In the UI when I create the table I do not see the CHAR option , but I do see lot of discussion where people are using CHAR for defining the columnar table. Not sure why UI dropdown does not show it. I also read that we should avoid using VARCHAR as those columns are not compressed, is that true, I thought the column store gives compression for all the columns. Are there certain columns which cannot be compressed .
Please let me know where I can find more information about these two questions.
    Poonam

    Hi Poonam
the CS_-data types are the data types that are used internally in the column store. They can be supplied but it is not at all required or recommended to do so.
SAP HANA will automatically use the correct CS_-data type for every SQL data type in your table definitions.
To be very clear about this: don't use the CS_-data types directly. Just stick to the SQL data types.
Concerning VARCHAR vs CHAR: fixed character data types are not supported anymore and don't show up anymore in the documentation.
I have no idea why you believe that VARCHAR columns are not compressed but this is just a myth.
    create column table charcompr (fchar char(20), vchar varchar(20));
    insert into charcompr (
        select lpad ('x', to_int (rand()*20), 'y'), null from objects cross join objects);
-- same data into both columns
    update charcompr set vchar = fchar;
-- perform the delta merge and force a compression optimization
    merge delta of charcompr;
    update charcompr with parameters ('OPTIMIZE_COMPRESSION' ='FORCE');
    -- check the memory requirements
    select COLUMN_NAME, MEMORY_SIZE_IN_TOTAL, UNCOMPRESSED_SIZE, COUNT, DISTINCT_COUNT, COMPRESSION_TYPE
    from m_cs_columns where table_name ='CHARCOMPR'
    COLUMN_NAME    MEMORY_SIZE_IN_TOTAL    UNCOMPRESSED_SIZE   COUNT   DISTINCT_COUNT  COMPRESSION_TYPE
    FCHAR       3661                    70285738            6692569 20              RLE
    VCHAR       3661                    70285738            6692569 20              RLE
We see: compression and memory requirements are the same for both fixed and variable character sizes.
