No sound from external speakers in win7 partition

hi all,
apologies if this is a common problem - but i couldn't find any info specific to it on the web.
i installed windows 7 in 64bit w/ bootcamp on my macbook pro and so far everything has been going great .. other than that i can't get any sound out of my external speakers.
i have the latest cirrus audio drivers and i also have the realtek drivers that were recommended. the built in speakers work fine but, as we know, they're not great.
when i plug my external speakers in, for some reason, the control panel thinks that they are headphones. as far as i know there are no additional drivers required for the speakers. they are speedlink gravity nx 2.1 speakers if that's relevant.
thanks in advance,
nick

Hi,
Your speakers are active and require 1.77v peak to peak at the input to produce sound, that is less than headphones need so if your Windows installation sees them as headphones it will not stop them from producing sound, so:
Get some headphones and plug them in, if there is no sound through them you can assume the port is outputting nothing.
Have you installed the BootCamp drivers from the CD?

Problem: I lost the option to get the sound from external speakers or headphones to upgrade to Lion 10.7.3. It accepts only internal speakers.  I downloaded  Combo directly , without using "Actualización de software". I followed all the advice from the Apple community.  Can I use bluetooth speakers to solve this problem?  My Computer: iMac. 20-inch, Early 2008. Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

You may need to reset PRAM/NVRAM.
First, check that the jack is clean. Put some alcohol on a plug and insert it a few times. See if that helps.
is your output both digital and analog? If digital, is the red laser light visible in the socket? Do not look directly into the socket when checking.
If all else fails try a PRAM reset:
    Reset your computer’s PRAM
A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “parameter random-access memory” or PRAM, stores certain settings in a location that Mac OS X can access quickly. The particular settings that are stored depend on your type of Mac and the types of devices connected to it. The settings include your designated startup disk, display resolution, speaker volume, and other information.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
DO NOT HOLD These keys beyond the second startup sound!
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.

  • I get sound from external speakers, but not songs

    Hi,
I have a pair of external speakers plugged into the output jack of my PC. I get sound, even from iTunes Help which Dings when I enter search criteria. But when I play songs in iTunes, they're silent. Since I get other sound from them, I know the volume is okay and they're plugged in, etc. I've played with all 3 volume controls -- the ones on the speakers, the one at the lower left next to the clock and the one in iTunes itself. Still no music.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Richard

This worked for me as well. Great find! I have gigabyte ep45-ud3r motherboard and I was getting all sound through external speakers except itunes was playing the sound out of the digital output instead of the speakers. I could see this when I went to control panel > hardware & sound > manage audio devices. I did the repair as described above and now I have sound in iTunes.

  • Very little sound from external speakers

After upgrading to Lion, there seems to be very little sound coming from my external speakers.  Speakers work with other devices but not so much with MacBook Pro.  In iTunes, the volumn slider is maxed out with the speaker volumn on the keyboard maxed out too.  Used to blast out the house, but not now.
Don't know if it's as a result of the upgrade or not.  I did a PRAM reset but still nothing.
    Any advice?
    Thanks in advance.

  • HP laptops diverting sounds from external speakers when headphones connected

    Hi there,
The problem is reproduced in several cases, but the most annoying is the following:
    1. Headphones are connected to the laptop (I assume all sounds must go to the headphones, not to the speaker)
    2. Have skype (or googletalk or several other apps) run in background
    3. Have browser (chrome, firefox) open and youtube video is being showed
    4. Message comes to IM (skype, gtalk...) and when BEEP from the application is played - it is played not in headphones, but in external speakers!
I though the issue was with skype - but after some time I faced with the same problem in other apps - and it is not reproduced on other laptops (not HP).
The problem is being seen on several different HP laptops. Here is details of my laptop:
    HP ProBook 6550b WD700EA#ACB
    Windows7 Enterprise 64bit, SP1

Ok I have it Fixed on my computer.
In the control panel then sound there are 3 devices.
    AMD HDMI Output
    AMD High Definition Audio Device
    Speakers and Headphones
    IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
    Communications Headphones
    IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
What apears to happen is that as soon as a communications type program starts it devides the audio inbetween 2 mixers and seperated the headphone jack from the main audio card. As soon as I right clicked and disabled the "Communications Headphones" Then there is only one mixer that focres all applications to use the heaphone jack instead of the regular applications through the external speakers and communication applications to the headphone.
If for any reason you want to reactivate the "Communications Headphones" one you disable you will need to right click in the sound windows and select show disabled devices.

  • Problems with sound from external speakers after iOS 5.0.1 update

Have others experienced problems with external speakers on the Iphone 4 after iOS 5.0.1 update?  My phone no longer rings, sounds when i receive a text message, sounds alarm, etc.  Vibrate works fine and when i plug in headphones I can hear music through the headphones.  Any fixes for this?

    Hi Guys,
I have post eariler on another forum and I have the same problem, I have tried all the things listed here and nothing was perminant in fixing this painful iphone hating problem.... and failed.  You probably have the problem when you use youtube or your music external speaker that there is no volume bar and no sound.   I have had the same problem But I need to happily say that I now have the fix!!!!  This worked for me and I fixed it by myself so you don't need to go to apple or service centre or anything.
Ok I like so many of you here truly believed this was as IO5 issue as it only dropped the sound on the speakers once that IO5 update came along.  I tried a bunch of reset, reboots, home clicks, lock and unlocks, to fix this and all failed.  some worked for an hour but then failed.  hours of my life that I will never get back.   but since I have learnt this is not a IO5 problem but a hardware issue! ...  and in paticualar is has to do with your bottom connection.  Your phone is thinking it is docked all the time.
To fix the no sound problem what you need is...
    1.  a torch
    2.  a tooth brush
    3.  methalated spirits
    4. a butter knife
    Step 1.
get your torch and shine it down the bottom connection plate to see what kind of dust, sand, hair or anything you have stuck in there.   all that need to be removed!  everything!  it might look clean but still thats ok go to step 2.
    step 2.
Turn on your music app and put the speakers on!  If your phone is like mine it should not work.  you most probably don't even have the volume display to turn it on but its ok, just do it! and it should still play with no sound.   its important you try and run the speakers as this will show you that it is a hardware problem.
    step 3.
Dip your tooth brush into some methated sprits.   then at your sink tap the exess metho out of your brush as you just want the brushes to be slightly damp, not soaking wet and then scrub the bottom connetiors on your iphone.  work the brush back and forward in a way that scoops the dirt out of the phone, not just pushing it side to side.
(As you bushing you should notice the volume bar come back on or off as you scub.   This happened to me and that is how I realised I was on the right track to fixing this problem as I was doing something external that was actually controling when the volume display came on or off.   but once I cleaned it this still didn't fix the problem...)
    Step 4.
Use the back side of a butter knife (not the sharp side) to gently slide over the connectors on the iphone.  Do this gently as you are only pushing down on the tiny metal contect bars and you should notice the volume display come on again.  slide it back and forward.  Now the area of interest is about 2/3 along the connection plate to the right.   This is the area that has the infomation sent when your iphone thinks its docked.
This has worked for me and I have not had a problem since I did this 2 weeks ago.   I have since learnt that the new IOS 5 has activated a different part of the bottom conectors.  if you have been using dodgy connectors or unapproved apple cables (as I was)  any damage or hair and dirt on the terminal this is effecting it.  Try it.   just remember if you can do something external to your phone then there lies the problem.
Hope this works for your phone as it did for mine.
    Cheers

  • No sound from external speakers on mac mini  late 2012 since installing more ram

    Hello folks,
I have just added 16 Gb of ram to my new Mac Mini now for some reason i cant get the external speakers to work, the internal one is fine? I have checked the external speakers on my netbook where they work fine. As i have only had my Mac a littlle while I am not sure if the external speaker was working before the ram upgrade.
On the System Preferences there is no external speaker option only internal?
    Everything else is working fine,
Any help form the Community will be much appreciated.

your connection might be faulty try jiggling it or twisting it gently while in the headphone jack.
I stress gently since there are optical outputs in it that you don't want to scratch. if you want true surround get a receiver that supports sound through hdmi or Toslink optical Audio, the latter I know your imac supports.

  • No sound from external speakers with music and apps on 3gS

I'm having sound problems with my 3gs.  I've read quite a few posts about this and have come to a dead end.
My problem is that there is no sound from apps of music etc from the external speaker but there is from phone calls.
    This is what I've tried:
    The silent button is off.
I've put the headphone in and out many times to know avail.  (I don't consider this to be the problem as when the jack is taken out the volume bar dissapears)
I've blown down the headphone jack.
I've cleaned out the usb socket with a toothpick
    I've done a restart
I've done a reset and a full reset with newly downloaded firmware.
To me it's acting as if it is docked into an external speaker.
    Any other suggestions.
    Darren

Is the iPhone able to still play ringtones and songs via headphones? If so, your iPhone probably thinks it is connected to a dock. I had this problem and while I don't suggest it, I messed rather vigorously with the dock/cable port at the bottom before the volume reappeared. I hope this helps.

  • Sound from external speakers, but not from internal speakers

I tried searching as much as I could and couldn't find an answer....
I always use my function keys to turn my volume up and down. It has worked fine until today, then all of a sudden, my internal speakers wont turn up or down when I use my function keys. The volume window comes up and below the volume level bar there is a circle with a line through it (like no smoking sign, but without the cigarette)which I guess leaves my internal speakers on mute.
So i came home, and plug in my logitech speakers, and I can control the volume fine from my function keys. Then I disconnect my logitech speakers from my computer and I get the same problem with my internal speakers.
I probably confused everyone but I guess a short version is my function keys wont turn on my internal speakers, and when I have external speakers plugged in, everything is normal.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Brendan

If you look in the headphone jack, can you see a glowing red light? This happened to many people, it was an issue where a switch got tripped to make the computer to think that a pair of headphones or external speakers were plugged in. Try inserting a toothpick inside the headphone jack and gently probing around in there to try and turn off the switch.
    See here.
And by the way, you don't need to bump topics that are only three hours old.

  • No sound from external speakers Desktop Theater 5.1 SB 5.1 Platinum

System had been working but lost sound from speakers. All wiring and cables are correct. Can only hear sound from headphones plugged into jack in front of the computer. I noticed on the Decoder\Amplifier that the only light that will come on is the power light. None of the other buttons or lights appear to be working.
Any help or ideas will be appreciated!
    Thanks

Thanks for getting back to me! The speaker system is a Cambridge Sound Works Desktop Theater 5.1. I do unplug the headphones when trying to use the speakers. I've checked for updated drivers and everything checks out through the device manager.
I guess I'm still concerned about the fact that I can't get anything on the box to respond or to light up other then the power indicator. How possible is it that the unit has failed internally? I'm running this on a Dell 4600 and it has worked in the past but stopped several weeks ago. I didn't install any new hardware or do anything that would have changed any settings.
I've run out of ideas, short of removing and reinstalling all of the Creative software and drivers so any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Todd

  • No Sound from External Speakers (It's 5.1 but It's Set to 2.1 Coz' It's Analog)

Hi. My external speakers were working fine just a few weeks ago. I set up the System Preferences correctly and have set 2-Ch 32 bit Float in Audio Midi Setup with 44100hz. On this late 2009 i7 iMac with the latest Lion 10.7.2, I'm using a 5.1 analog (Sound Blaster) with the green plug in the headphone jack of the Mac but I'm only using 2 of its speakers and the subwoofer where all satellite speakers are attached (2.1 setup). If I use the iPhone 3G's headphones, there is sound, it works. If I use the iMac's built-in speakers it works but I don't want to use the built-in iMac spekers because it might get busted if the sound it too loud which would be harder to replace.
If I use the external speakers it partially doesn't work (I checked that it's on, it's volume is full)- when I use the configure speaker in Audio Midi Setup and click on the right and left channel, only the subwoofer can be heard faintly.
Is this a Lion bug or the satelite speakers are busted (and just the subwoofer's working)? Thank you in advance.
    Gbu.

  • No sound from external speakers (MBP 13.3 2011). Please Help

Hi. I bought the 13.3 inch MacBook Pro recently (Mac OS X 10.6.7). I want to play songs using my external speakers. But whenever I insert the jack of my external speakers into the audio-out port, there is no sound coming out of them. I searched for the problem on internet, but was unable to rectify. Internal speakers of MBP work fine. I've checked the basic things:
    1. External speakers are powered on.
    2. Sound is not muted.
    3. They work fine with my Windows desktop PC and with my TV.
When I opened my Sound Preferences with having the jack inserted, under the Output tab I've this information:
    (Name)Digital Out     (Type)Optical digital-out port
The selected device has no output controls.
Also the volume setting is disabled and I can't increase or decrease the volume by dragging the slider (though the level is 100%).
    Please Help.
    Thanks.

Oh yea, I forgot. I did rest the pram. So, I have done everything that any seasoned mac user would do. I speculate that this could be something to do with BootCamp. Just a guess. IDK

  • Very poor sound from internal speakers, very good on headphones.

    Hi,
I hope you can give some advice.
New to all this so apologies if protocols are broken etc
    New 20" imac, running Leopard.
very thin, tinny sound from internal speakers (similar to hearing someone's else's walkman
on the train). when I plug headphones in its great no probs.
Advice please! I don't want to send it back I'm halfway through my assignment.
    Hadders

I just realized I've never heard the internal speakers on my new iMac, I have always used good 2.1 speakers since I got my eMac years ago and the internals really sucked.
I was just curious, have you heard anybody elses built in iMac speakers and did they sound better than yours or the same? Maybe at the Apple Store?
I don't know, I just didn't know if they really improved them. Maybe other iMac users can chime in on internal speaker quality. The only reason I said all this was because you mentioned that headphones sound great, which is the same port that a set of external speakers would go.
Sorry to hear you had to send it back for that. Here's hoping you didn't have to send it in for what the speakers really do sound like.
