No sound from playing avi files in front row.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can play my avi files from front row when I put them into the movies folder...however, the music just won't play!!!~~~~~~
is anyone else having this problem?
anyone with a solution?
please please help!!!!

I'm assuming these are Divx movies? Have you installed the latest AC3 codec, this worked for me:
You need a file called "AC3 Codec.component"
Do a search and you can find it to download, and try that. This got my audio working in Front Row on my MacBook Pro
You can download it here:

  • Playing AVI files in Front Row

Hi, is there anyway I can play avi files in front row without having to convert them to .mov? I could not find any avi plugins for quicktime.

,avi is a container, like .mov, which can contain any number of different codecs.
I would suggest that you download Perian
    http://perian.org/
which converts most codecs to something Quicktime can play.
Whether you can then play them in Front Row is another matter - to be honest I am not sure.

  • Playing .avi files in Front Row has stopped

    Hi,
I've had my iMac for about 3.5yrs and Front Row has always read .mp4, .m4v and .avi files with no problems (providing i navigate to /Movies/Movies Folder, not /TV Shows because that only reads .mp4 files the same as iTunes & Apple TV), up until a couple of days ago. When i navigate to an .avi file now it plays the file, has the correct time length indicated but all have no sound and black screens.
Is anyone aware of any updates that could've stopped this? how it was casued or know how to get around it?
    Thanks.
    TG

What version of OS X are you running? Front Row was withdrawn with the advent of Lion.

  • Cannot get any sound when playing .avi files

    Hi All
I am running QT version 6.5.3 on Mac OS X 10.2.8 and cannot get any sound when playing .avi files but the picture is perfect.
I have installed the following: M-Peg 2 playback component, AVI Components and AC3 component.
Does anyone know if I am missing anything or how I can fix this?
    Many thanks
    Garry

Download and install Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs. In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/

  • No sound when playing .avi files

    Hi everyone,
I tried to fond the solution to this problem with the search options but didn't find anything.
I purchased Quicktime 7 Pro for windows to convert avi files for my iPhone.
At first I had troubles getting more than a black screen, but this was solved with the divx codecs. But since then I still get no sound from avi files. Even the audio half of the A/V controls are disabled... Seems it happens even with mp3 audio encoded files...
Does anyone know what codecs (?) are missing and where I have to install them ?
    Thanks for reading,
    Nicolas

  • No sound when playing AVI file

I've looked through the forum and downloaded Perian and DivX and tried deleting the DivX files out of the Quicktime folder, but still no sound when playing one of all my AVI files. If I click on the icon for the video, I can play it through there with sound, but when I actually open the file in Quicktime, there's no sou

Did you try both Quicktime applications?  There is also Quicktime 7x which is located inside the Utilities folder.

  • Playing .m4v files in front row

    Hi,
I recently updated my OS to 10.6.3 from 10.5.x. The install stuffed up a few times and I ended up doing a wipe of the install disc and changing out the RAM to get it to finally work. Since then, I haven't been able to play some video formats in both Quicktime/Front Row or VLC (first time I have ever had trouble playing a video in VLC). I have DivX, Flip4Mac and Perian all installed (like I did before the update) and most files play, except for some .m4v files. It's weird because some of the .m4v files do play, and some don't. All the files played before the 10.6 update.
When I try to open the files in Quicktime, it gives me the message 'the document .... could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that Quicktime understands'. It says I may need to install additional software, but thats all installed.
In VLC it gave me a message which I can't seem to get it to give again, something about the files being unplayable and it can not be fixed.
Like I said, all the videos played in OS 10.5.
Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks in advance

I found that I had that problem as well. I've found most of the time the files can be played in Quicktime 7, however Quicktime X (included with 10.6 seems to have problems with a few versions of M4V, also VLC has the same problem, but Quicktime 7 seems to have no issue. I know it must be a compression scheme that is no longer supported, but I don't know how to find out what it is and how to get Quicktime X to identify the Codec.

  • How to play .cdr files in Front Row without Toast

I just created an image of a few personal home DVD's using the Disk Utility and created as a CD/DVD Master images having extension .cdr . They load fine and I am able to play them via DVD Player, but I wish to see it in Front Row.
I found from the internet that one can use Toast to load such images but I do not have Toast and cannot shell out USD 70/80 for it.
I cannot use Disk Assist as well since this will mean I will have to copy folder from disk to another folder which will be a pain. I certainly will not want to have 2 copies. I don't wish to delete the .CDR .
Is there another way I can see those DVD's in Front Row?

  • Can't play movie files in front row...

    Hello,
I just got a new Macbook Pro (With lepoard) and cannot get my movie to play in Front Row. I could do it no problem in Tiger. I keep getting the message "The selected video could not be played--the format was not recognized."
The picture of the video shows up next to it, but it does not play and gives the above message.
Please help me out, as this is extremely frustrating. Thanks.

I had the same problem (only with the trailers and top (Movies and TV), it was resolved (unfortunately I don't remember how, may be with an upgrade) and now I have it again. These are files created by apple therefore there is no reason why a 3rd party codec would be needed to play them.

Only DVD player I have that will play AVI files from DVDs recorded off the computer is my portable/car DVD player.  Is there a DVD player I can purchase to play these DVDs without using the portable DVD player?

    Look for something DivX certified.

  • Please help! Playing .avi files in QT Pro

I have installed Perian, been to the Apple Store, and searched high and low for the answer, but cannot figure out how to play .avi files in QuickTime Pro. It's only some .avi files (not all), I can hear the background noise, but the screen is black. Please tell me how to remedy this.
    Thank you,
    Thom

'avi is simply a container that can contain any number of different video codecs. Most, but not all, can be played on a Mac.
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear/play pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.2.1 and 4, QT 7.4.x, 7.5.x and 7.6 and OS 10.4.11 and 10.5.6.
Download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 11.1 for Mac from:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
Note that Adobe requires you to uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, as mentioned here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=1
using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2009-001. (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
And there is an additional kid on the block: SilverLight. Microsoft has created their own version of what a replacement for Flash could be. You can read more about it here:
    http://silverlight.net/
So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards) if you are using a PPC Mac. Version 2 only works with Intel Macs:
    http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/
Recommendation: Close all applications before installing any of the above, repair permissions, reboot, and repair permissions again.

  • My mac wont play .avi files

My macbook stopped playing .avi files that I download from the internet a few months ago.  I assumed they were just broken links, but now its past coincidence.  I have perian, and had DivX.  I removed DivX (heard the 2 clash) but still nothing works.
I thought I would get rid of Perian and try divX, but when I "removed perian" it just said "removed" and didnt actually uninstall.
I also have a bunch of other stuff that I don't use (to my knowledge), wondered if any of it was important:
    Flip4Mac
    Growl
    MacFUSE

If the AVI files are "links" that feed off streaming content, it's possible they have all been removed on the respective streaming severs by the original source, depending on their age.
With that said, Flip4Mac is the Microsoft supported plugin to allow playback of Windows Media Content inside QuickTime. You can check your version & update if needed here:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/windows-media-player/wmcompo nents
It's also possible they may be Divx encoded files. Requiring the Divx decoder plugin:
    http://divx.com
Growl & MacFUSE are generally not related to Media Files. ( Google their names )
Also, Give VLC player a try. There isn't much of anything it won't play ( actually, try this first. ):

  • JMStudio won't play .avi files - mpeg-2 works fine

Why doesn't JMStudio play .avi files?
A small application that I created with JMF 2.1.1 has the same trouble.
My .avi files can be played successfully with mediaplayer and also zoom player but JMStudio chokes on them. Why?
I want to create a two-pane player for side-by-side video comparison with JMF but I don't want to start the effort if simple .avi playback is not possible.
Sun's JMF 'supported format' page shows that all forms of .avi are at least 'playable' - yet my files are not.
I have several mpeg-2 files that are playable in JMStudio and also in my simple app - so I know that the code is working.
There are several old threads on this forum that ask this question but none of the threads give a decent answer.
    Please help.
    Thanx,
    skigrinder

    Got it working.
Apparently, JMF can't handle type-1 .avi files but it can handle type-2 .avi files.
Nero and Sony-DvGate both create type-1 .avi files in the capture process from a DV camcorder.
    I found a (Windows) utility - DvConverter - that will convert a type-1 .avi file to type-2.
I'm now able to play these type-2 .avi files in JMFStudio and also in my own prototype player.
Surprisingly, the FramePositioningControl functions also work - skip() and seek() !!!
I'm currently working on eliminating the 'comb-teeth' effect that exists in both JMFStudio and my own player.
I've read that this effect is the result of interlacing artifacts but my experience has shown that it also has a lot to do with the codec that's running. In windows, installing, un-installing, and re-installing codecs has a tendancy to mess with the registry in unpleasant ways resulting in a lot of time wasted trying to get rid of this 'comb-tooth' effect.
Andrew, do you know of a foolproof way to solve this problem on windows?
    Thanx,
    skigrinder
