No sound from Quicktime 7

Trying to watch .avi, shows perfectly - but no sound. i have tried going into applications/utilities/audio setup etc...but still doesn't work.
Can anyone help this novice mac user?

First, identify what type of audio encoding is used then look for a component to support it in QuickTime or use an alternative player.
To identify the file*, video and audio** format of a movie or sound file:
QuickTime Player:
Open the file
Window menu > Show movie info
Look in the Format: field
**Note that recently someone posted in the forum that QuickTime Player failed to display any audio information for a file which did play with audio (A52) in VLC.
MPlayer OSX:
Show the playlist window if it isn't already visible.
Drag the movie file into the playlist window.
Select the movie in the list
Click the "i" button for info
VLC:
Open the movie in VLC
Window menu > Info
Click the black triangles so that they point down
*Note that VLC does not display the file format, only the format of the content (audio and video) within the file. A file ending in .divx for instance, is probably in actuality an avi file but VLC doesn't show that information - MPlayer will and QuickTime Player will - if - QuickTime Player will open the file to begin with.
QuickTime components, newer info is further down...

QuickTime Alternatives:
MPlayer OS X - Plays just about everything has built-in decompression for other formats such as Indeo Video 3 - FREE

-- If QuickTime Player won't even open a file, try running MPlayer and showing the playlist window, drag the file into the playlist and click the "i"nfo button to see the file format, video and audio compression types.

  • No sound in Quicktime Movies

Whether I watch a movie within IE or within ITunes I no longer get sound from quicktime. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times. My sound card is working as it works with other video players.
Any ideas where the disconnect is? I've verified the more obvious, ie volume is up in the quicktime player, sounds works on the pc etc.

  • Sound changes when moving mp3 from quicktime to itunes

When I move a mp3 from quicktime to itunes the sound changes. itunes makes it sound a little worse from the original mix. I dont think its the equalizer becuase i tried fooling around with that and tuning it off for a better result.
So the mp3 sounds perfect in quicktime but terrible in itunes whats my problem?

I figured out that if i bring it into itunes as mp4 instead of mp3 it sounds alright.
So you are not moving the MP3 from QT to iTunes as you wrote in your first post. You are converting from AAC to MP3.
i tried to burn it and i think it automatically converts it back to mp3 for the burn
    No.
If you have audio CD selected in iTunes prefs -> Advanced - Burning, it will convert them to an audio CD.
It willnot convert any other time unless you tell it to convert.
is there a way to burn it while maintaining the mp4 quality??
Select Audio CD or Data CD and it will burn an audio file or the MP4 file.

  • Export from Quicktime...and...no sound. Why?

I have a 16.9 meg movie file and when I export it from Quicktime there's no sound. Why is this, and is there any way around this? I've tried using MPeg streamclip to export it, and it will, but the file ends up being bigger than I'd like. I'd like to shrink it down to about 4 or 5 megs.

You cannot export the sound from a muxed file like an mpg file, as this article from Apple states:
    QT Mpeg Limitations
Fortunately there is a workaround this limitation, in the form of this freeware that will export both the video and sound from mpegs:

  • Using sound from one Movie in another one

I have one animation movie and I want the sounds from that one on another version of the movie (another file). How can I export or copy these sounds?

Share your Project using SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME... and choose an audio only codec like AIFF. This will give you a sound file that you can use elsewhere.

  • How can I import video and sound from my sony camcorder?

I have just bought the mac.  I'm struggling to import video AND sound from my Sony DCR-SR87 hard disk handycam camcorder.  From what I've read already, I ended up purchasing and downloading Quicktime MPEG2, and used the Utility MPEG Component Lion from downloaded MPEG Streaming 1.9.3b6 to enable video and sound to play on the computer directly from the camcorder.  The problem is that when I import these clips using iphoto (it pops up when I connect the camcorder), the sound does not accompany the video onto the computer.  I've hit something of a brick wall and would really appreciate any help.

    OK, according to
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3290
your camera is supported by iMovie 9.  Perhaps the question is better asked in the iMovie forum.  Would you like me to ask a moderator to move the thread?

  • Outputting 5.1 Channel Surround Sound from your Mac

How to output 5.1 Channel Surround Sound from you Mac...

I have been using my MacBook Pro via HDMI into my pioneer av amp which is set up for 5.1.
I have been able to output 5.1 audio with Logic Pro and FCPX no issues at all after you setup the audio midi utility for 5.1. This setup is via PCM 5.1 audio not to be confused with Dolby 5.1.
It works great. If you want to play your edited exported movies from Final Cut Pro x in surround then it gets a bit tricky. I export the movie with FCPX as master video with the 5.1 audio then use HandBreak set to atv3 to encode / compress the video. This is great because handbreak folds the 5.1 into a stereo AAC track and also encodes the 5.1 mix into Dolby 5.1 AC3 track so both stereo and surround tracks are embedded in the movie file. So if you have an Apple TV it will play the movie with its surround track. If you play the same HandBreak compressed movie out of your Mac via hdmi to your surround amp it will only play the stereo track if you are using iTunes or QuickTime  and I believe this is because of copy protect and Dolby license issues. iTunes will play a purchased movie from the itunes store in surround via your Macs hdmi to receiver setup but will only play the stereo track of the movie you exported from HandBreak even though it is set up just like an iTunes movie. To get your HandBreak movie to play in Dolby surround from your Mac all you need is VLC player, then you have to go in and select the Dolby track and the output in VLCs audio settings and bingo your HandBreaked movie then plays out of your Mac in Dolby surround. Once you set your Mac up for 5.1 mixing your amp will show your outputting 5.1 via the mac but again this is PCM audio 5.1 and apps like FCPX, Soundtrack Pro, Logic Pro will work.

  • No sound with quicktime MPEG 2 program

I bought yesterday the Mpeg2 option. The problem is that the mpg files have no sound sound when i play them. Theses files come from windows recorded with a sony HD camera. If i use the program Mplayer ( freeware ) everything is ok. Can you tell me what can i do to have sound with quicktime mpeg2

Can you tell me what can i do to have sound with quicktime mpeg2
What Klaus1 is attempting to point out is that the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback Component is a video only component. As such, the audio is compatible only if the audio format in the multiplexed file is already QT compatible with your system configuration. An MPEG file normally consists of MPEG-2 video (handled by the component you purchased) which is multiplexed with MPEG-1 layer audio (MP1, MP2, or MP3), AC3, or PCM audio. If all you want to do is make your file playable with audio in the QT X and/or QT 7 media player, then the easiest approach is to simply convert the non-playing audio compression format to one that is supported. In most cases that would be an MPEG file type containing MPEG-2 video (from the source file) re-multiplexed with MPEG-1, Layer 2 (MP2) audio. This is a very common combination compatible with both Mac and PC platforms.
Since you already have the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component installed, all you really need is the free MPEG Streamclip application. Simply open the file in MPEG Streamclip, select the "Convert to MPEG with MP2 audio..." option, and provide a new name for your target file. The Streamclip application will then de-mux the file, convert the audio (probably AC3) to MP2 audio, re-mux the MP2 audio with the original MPEG-2 video and copy it to the newly named MPEG file container. Since the video is not re-compressed by this action, the work flow is reasonably fast. Further, if you have a lot of files to convert, you can even set up a batch list of files to be converted. MPEG Streamclips is a very handy application and highly recommended if you plan to do much trimming/limited editing of MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 content on a Mac.

  • No sound in QuickTime exported videos

Not sure if this should be posted in iTunes, but being as I used Quicktime to export as .mp4 and .m4v, it seems pertinent to post here.
So I have a movie that is .mpg. I opened it in QuickTime and exported it as .m4v and then opened it in iTunes. There is no sound from the .m4v when played in iTunes, and no sound when played in QuickTime.
I tried exporting as .mp4 and the same problem occurs.
The original has sound in Quicktime and iTunes, but is about 93 MB (so I don't want to add it to an iPod anytime soon at that size).
    Can anyone help?

Since your files are MPEG-2 format you'll need the MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20 from Apple) and MPEG Streamclip (free).
Convert your files to DV Stream. This will help preserve quality.
Open the new .dv file with QuickTime Pro and export. Version 7.0.3 has a new "iPod" preset to use but you can use your own custom settings if you wish.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/creatingvideo.html
I don't own an iPod so I doubt I'll ever use the feature. It appears that there are many supported file extensions that can be used for videos on an iPod.

  • 24P and sound from Mbox

when my 24p video is digitized, the browser shows the duration in 00:03:22:12 format - meaning the : is all NON DROP FRAME. When I imported the audio (recorded on an Mbox from the shoot as back up sound) it came in the 00:03:22;12 format - is DROP FRAME. so when I marry the two together (exporting quicktime movie uncompressed) the new file's timecode is DROP FRAME - will this cause a problem when I go to output the entire movie? Is this something I should be worried about? What I do know is that the audio and the video are in sync - so I can't change the duration of something to make it seem NON DROP. I have some audio from the DV tape and now some audio from the MBox so I don't know if I can use it not that it looks like I have both drop and non drop clips.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Is there a better place to put the play sound from than in
