No Sound from Realtek on K8N SLI-FI (NOW FIXED)
New bulid all snapped together well enough but I am getting nothing from the
Realtek AC'97 neither through line out nor front panel.
A souncard when intsalled to check performs as normal.
Without/before the soundcard added everything looks fine. All okay in Device
Manager and no error messages when sounds/music playing nor in speaker
setup... just not a peep from the damn board. BTW I didn't connect a speaker
until late after installing the OS.
I have updated the drivers but not flashed the BIOS, there wouldn't appear
any reason to. I have version 1.2, 1.3 shows nothing relevant so why risk
RMA problems?
UPDATE: FIX = RTFM
I had forgotten about the jumpers on the front panel audi connector. Disconnectiong the front panel and replacing jumpers gives back the sound.
I still have a problem that the front panel audio connector I used is incompatible, but shouldbe able to confirm by cross checking wiring.
FIXED
"MSI reminds you... 5&6,9&10 have to be jumpered."
Possible problem with cases front audio panel/connector but onboard sound okay.

No sound from RealTek audio card? [Solved]
I can't hear any sound from my laptop. This is what I executed:
pacman -S alsa-utils
gpasswd -a yourusername audio
alsamixer
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
alsactl store
nano /etc/rc.conf
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network crond alsa)
Last edited by Zdravko (2008-04-22 12:36:38)If I understand you correctly, you have installed all required alsa packages and tried to configure. What doesn't work is attempting to push up the volume via alsamixer/aumix etc., unmuting also does not work.
Am I correct?
If so, you may have a similar issue to what happened to me a ways back. Is your current kernel up to date? The problem I had involved the fact that my sound card (though it was extremely common and, well, sh*tty) was affected by a feature regression in the ALSA code and an incompatibility with kernel in what was then [current]. I had to wait for the kernel to catch up to ALSA to do anything, but the regression had to be fixed before I could do anything useful.
Moral of the story (also known as the 'tl;dr' or 'too long; didn't read' version) - Try updating your kernel if all else has failed. If nothing useful comes out of that, try searching the ALSA site. -
Good morning ...
In my last PC I have a sound card from Creative and their cambridge speaker set. The music from that was good. However since i have upgarde to my new machine and using their Realtek sound but with my old cambridge speaker. I noticed that sound cracks when its at high volume and don't sound as crystal clear.
Anyone notices the same problem?Quote from: Bluum on 10-February-07, 22:40:55
Realtek should be banned from motherboards. There is allway some kindd of trouble with their chips!
Realtek is CHEAP, and thats the only reason MB produsent's buy their products.
Nothing wrong with Realtek codecs, particularly the most recent AC'97 and HD product lines. In fact, Realtek codecs have compared favorably to Creative products in subjective music and DVD movie playback listening tests performed by many review sites. e.g.
The SB Audigy SE generates better gaming audio quality than the Realtek ALC-882 based systems and similar DVD/music audio quality. In our subjective headphone testing we noticed differences between the two codecs, with the output from the ALC-882 sounding cleaner in the mid-range tones with deeper bass in the music and DVD movie playback tests while ambient sounds and positioning in the games tests clearly favored the SB Audigy SE. However, the difference was minor when utilizing our 4, 5.1, or 7.1 speaker setup in a typical room environment. - MSI: SLI Plus Eight, Anandtech.com
Both The Matrix and Dream Theater Live at Budokan took full advantage of our 5.1 surround system, though we preferred listening to Dream Theatre using the higher quality headphones in stereo while watching. And so, we listened both ways on each card just to cover the bases. And what do you know, but we just couldn't find favor with any of these cards. Each did as good of a job as the last playing back these higher quality audio streams. - Winter Audio Reference: On-Board, Consumer, and Pro Solutions, Anandtech.com
There are innumerable ways that motherboard designers/manufacturers can screw-up the analog signal output quality by paying little attention to design, including poor MTRR or chipset optimization in BIOS that results in latency or interference problems (e.g. users reporting "I updated my BIOS and all the crackling/noise/whining went away"). You can't just slap a codec on a board surrounded by dozens of high-frequency signals and expect the codec to compensate or correct for all the short-comings of the board design. Similar complaints can be found with any codecs, including ADI, and even sound cards are not immune to these problems. -
Hi I have a MS-6524 motherboard with ac97 onboard sound.
I have some legacy DOS games in which I would like to get the sound working - does anbody know how?
TIA
MikeRunning a dos program in w2k. Everything works except that the game (SWOS 96-97) won`t recognise the soundcard I have tried the auto-config for every possible listed card and also tried setting manually to no avail.
I downloaded "dosbox" after doing a search on this forum and finding somebody else had had a similar problem and used this, the sound then works but performance is rubbish.
Any ideas?

MSI k8n SLI platinum (Now mad)
Ok ok my previous cpu wich was a winchester 3200+ that had the 219Mhz bug and all
But even now with my new cpu i can't overclock to 220 stable.
WT is wrong with this mainboard.
it's just so stupid.
Can someone guide me with the setting in the bios....
My guess is that i did all i could... and that i'm doubting myself now.
From memory, cpu, NB Voltage boots to lowering ramtimings and HTT.
Disabled all spread spectrums, no C&C (never had) etc... what's the deal.
i'm on the edge on buying a new (diffrent) mainboard.
if you think i need better memory.... Show me the best you can think of and i'll buy them and proof this board has problems

I had some of your memory(cas 2 for intel cas 2.5 for AMD) and hated it plus it gave up on me.
Got some corsair pc4400 to replace it and while it wasn't that bad it still broke down on me.
Got what I have in my sig and overclocks like a train
RAM is still very important on nforce4 boards.
Check rebelshaven for info about it.
Rebelshaven
I also had some cheap hynix twinmos pc3200 that did way better than I expected(250@1:1)
Which bios you using?
Did you reset bios 1st?
Did you then 'load optimised defaults'?
I flashed to the latest bios, sinds i got this 4800+ processor.
and no i didn't reset it.
and no didn't load optimal...

Very, very low sound from MSI K8N SLI Platinum
The sound from my MSI K8N SLI Platinum nForce 4 is so low that i must set the volume control on max and the speakers on max to hear anything. I tried other speakers with the same result. The speakers are amplified.
What can i do?Well for a start you could search the forum as this problem is now well known. I'm not getting at you but I know how frustraing it is wanting someone to respond with an answer, and you don't have to wait if the problem has already been discussed!
The problem is that MSI decided to specify that the 24 pin supply must have -5v to support the creative chip. This is in contradiction to atx 2.2, and other PSU specs for 24pin supplys, which say the pin in question is NC (no connection).
What you need is a dual standard 20/24 pin supply.
Theres is a FAQ about this on the diamond forum, but I'm not sure if unregistered Platinum SLI users can read them anymore!
According to the FAQ MSI are promising US diamond users the chance to RMA their diamond boards when modified boards whcih don't require the -5v supply are availble. This isn't much use to us european Platinum SLI users.
I have a Tagan 480w which is dual standard 20/24 pin supply. -
Satellite C55-A5300 64 bit Laptop Lousy Sound From Headphones
Purchased a Satellite C55-A5300 64 bit Laptop from Best Buy.Speakers work great, headphone sounds LOUSY.Tried 3 different headphones, then went back to Best Buy and tried headphones on floor model.Still lousy. It's not the headphones, or the jack.Downloaded updates for Windows 8.0 (but not 8.1).Downloaded relevent driver updates from Toshiba website. No improvement. The headphones icon does not even show up in the sound tab/Control Panel,or in the RealTek assistant software but the Speaker icon does.Going back to generic RealTek driver from RealTek website.Restarting my computer now.
I went back to Best Buy and tested headphones on the floor model of the computer I purchased. It has the exact same problem-LOUSY headphone sound.I can't believe Toshiba put out bad hardware-it has to be the RealTek driver, which is specific for this Toshiba laptop.I actually downloaded and installed the generic driver from the RealTek website, and suddenly the RealTek card was MISSING in the Device Manager list.So I reinstalled the Toshiba driver, and I'm back to square one.

Troubles with SB Blaster onboard sound (MSI K8N SLI PLATINUM)
Hi guys, sorry for my poor english (I am Italian )
The SB On Board sound of my k8n sli pt works only with the digital sound output; why????
Other signals are completely mute (mic, line in, line out)
Is my mainboard broken??? Help me plz.....Quote from: Menego on 18-March-05, 18:43:13
well unfortunately i have a 20 pin power supply but i took the 20pin to 24pin device Doesn't it work correctly?
The 24 pin spec requires the -5v pin to have no connection. If you use a 20 to 24 pin adapter lead the -5v pins are not connected. You can try plugging the 20 pin plug into the 24 pin socket offset to one side. Many report having no problesm doing this. Alternatively you can try adding you own lead to the adapter to connect the -5v pins. -
K8N Diamond - sound from PCTV media center 300i
I have the following mainboard: K8N Diamond (NVIDIA, nFORCE, 4 SLI Chipset Based) - which I am very happy with.
I am watching TV on my PC using: PCTV Media Center 300i.
I have not yet found a way to hear the sound from the TV. There is an internal audio cable (4-pin) from the PCTV card which should be connected to the sound card. But I do not where to connect on the mainboard.
Can anyone help ?I'm not sure as I don't have anything plugged in on JCD1, everything is working for me without this cable. Of course at the moment, I don't have a TV card either.
I'll see what I can find out, you may want to send an email to the MSI technical support. This is just a public forum and I don't think they monitor it. -

MSI K8N SLI Platinum sound problem

On-board Sound Blaster seemingly non-existent on K8N SLI Platinum
Hi,
I have a K8N SLI Platinum motherboard fitted with an Athlon 64 3500+ processor. My problem is that the on-board Creative Sound Blaster refuses to work. In the BIOS there is no mention of it under 'Intergrated Peripherals' as there should be, and attempts to install the latest drivers (on Windows XP x64) results in the installation program telling me I do not have a Sound Blaster. I have upgraded to the latest BIOS.
I guess this is an issue with the power supply, since I can see no mention on the box of it providing a -5V supply. Can anyone confirm that the Sound Blaster will start working if I buy a new PSU with a -5V supply.
Many thanks.Check out the pics on this thread. https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=81764.0
If your board has that module then there is another problem. If it does not have it then the powersupply not having the -5v rail is probably the reason.
Good Luck

K8N SLI Platinum -5V sound Fix
Hi Guys
Ok i purchased this board with an Enermax 600W Noisetaker PSU. Then i found i had rally bad sound from the onboard creative chip. Sound was low in volume and alot of hiss, bad sound.
Found out my PSU had NO -5V supply to the MB. SO replaced with a Tagan 480W PSU (Code TG480-U01) and all works just great now.
SO this board DOES Require a -5V DC supply to the Motherboard from the PSU in order for the onboard creative sound chip to work.
2 PSU's that are recommended are the Tagan 480W TG480-U01 and the OCZ PowerStream 520w
Good luck
Paulget the OCZ...i for one can hands down say they are the best PSU on the market right now, beautiful, incredible power...stable...and quiet...u cant ask for anything more....GET IT.

K8N-SLI Platinum strange behaviour
Hi there
Apart from the northbridge making a weird noise sometimes when the motherboard is on it's side (i.e. tower case standing upright), the motherboard started behaving strangely on saturday
first the computer refused to find my network, always assigning a local ip, so i tried rebooting the router a few times, and then checked my other computer which is connected to the router fine
then i tried to play a game and noticed the sound had gone, and then the game kept quitting barely after i started it so i gave that up
then, after i had to move the mouse between this one and another computer, the usb ports (all of them, no matter whether through pci card or on motherboard, the mouse stopped working
throughout all of this i rebooted many times.
i finally gave up in the evening, and the next morning on a whim i turned the computer on and everything was fine, what's going on?!?! is this linked to the northbridge at all? i've monitored all the fans and temps and all are normal and running constantly ( cpu never above 40c)
is the motherboard losing it, or maybe the power supply (all voltages seem normal too...)

ReapsPossible suggestions are as follows: Although the manual states that your power supply should be 450w or above i think that with your PSU your fairly border line. Remember that your psu will only draw the power that it requires and as soon as you start putting 256 Mb graphics cards and upgrading to more ram it is using even more resources and can cause your system to have all sorts of dramas and Re-boots.With your network connection problems this could be due to either network problems in your area which BT or your telephone provider can help you with or as i have recently found out.. too many net work connections that may conflict with each other.Go to your controll panel,Network and internet connections then network connections you should have your broadband or dial up connection listed. If you have more than one connection listed and for instance you dont use LAN (local area connection) Networking then you will have to uninstall this connection and disable all Lan options from the Bios i.e nVidia Mac LAN, nVidia Mac LAN ROM, Marvell Gigabit LAN, Marvell Gibyte rom.A possible other prob may be to disable your IEEE 1394 connection from the bios as i had similar problems to yours but am now okay. I am not saying any of these are related directly to your problems however they are possibilities which you may like to try. Please note also that your USB problems can be solved by using the latest Bios update (which i personally have never had any problems with) but may be risky if you have no idea how to flash your bios. My advice on this would be to read the moderators (Bas..i think) instructions as to how to do this or as he suggests unistall all your motherboards usb drivers that were installed from the disk provided by your Motherboard Manafacturer, Re-boot and let windows re-install its own USB drivers which certainly worked for me.

K8N SLI Platinum - cd-in to digital ou
Hello
I just built my new system with MSI K8N SLI Platinum mobo. I can't get sound from cd-in to be heared from digital out. I had an option on Soundstorm to do this, Live! 24-bit seems to lack this option. Can this be done? Can I got sound from inputs mixed with digital out signal? I got DVB card and would like to hear something on my amplituner without connecting another cable to it.Nope. This card is even worse. Analog inputs and outputs just doesn't work in digital-out mode. It's insane, but it looks like a feature, not a bug...
