No Sound in Gnome 3
From reading around the Gnome 3 threads, I've noticed a few people having sound problems, but no dedicated thread. Since upgrading, I can't get sound working at all, even in XFCE.
Gnome requires pulseaudio, and I think i've got it configured properly, but I just don't get any sound. If I open up the PulseAudio volume control, I can see my card selected, and I even see pulsating sound bars when I try to play sound. But I still don't actually get any sound! Same in XFCE. I can even see the pulsating sound bars when I try to play via ALSA thanks to the asound.conf that pulseaudio creates...but no sound.
I've tried restarting pulseaudio with max logging, but no clues there.
The sound modules seem to have loaded OK. I don't think there is a udev problem
I've tried killing pulseaudio, removing the pulseaudio ALSA config, and playing directly to ALSA. I can see my card in alsamixer, and all the channels are unmuted.....but still no sound.
It's getting annoying now...I want my music back!
anyone else had similar problems
cheers

Hi, i had exactly the same problem but i managed to solve it by installing pavucontrol via pacman (pacman -S pavucontrol) and setting Analog Stereo Duplex in Configuration Tab. Hope it works for you! ;-)

[SOLVED] No sound in Gnome 3 after upgrade
Hi,
After last upgrade, I have no sound in Gnome 3.
I think all modules are loading:
lsmod| grep snd
snd_hda_codec_conexant 47158 1
snd_hda_intel 25700 4
snd_hda_codec 97432 2 snd_hda_codec_conexant,snd_hda_intel
snd_hwdep 6300 1 snd_hda_codec
snd_pcm 74926 3 snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel
snd_page_alloc 7217 2 snd_pcm,snd_hda_intel
snd_timer 18966 2 snd_pcm
snd 60021 13 snd_hwdep,snd_timer,snd_hda_codec_conexant,snd_pcm,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel,thinkpad_acpi
soundcore 5442 1 snd
also the soundcard is recognized:
lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xf2620000 irq 47
29 [ThinkPadEC ]: ThinkPad EC - ThinkPad Console Audio Control
ThinkPad Console Audio Control at EC reg 0x30, fw 6HHT14WW-1.02
and the user is in aduio group. The problem seems to be similar with this one:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1159367
but as I'm not using LXDE, the solution does not work for me.
Do you have any clues what to do with this?
Thank you!
EDIT: hm, the sound started working, when I launched Gnome Music Player Client... Still, any ideas why this happened?
EDIT2: now it works also after reboot, so it seems like mpd did some mess with the sound. I'm marking this topic as solved, but if someone will know what happened, then I'll be happy just to understand it

No sound on GNOME with pulseaudio [Resolved]
Hi there,
the title says it all: I've lost all sound in GNOME. Hardware is checked and fully working (dual-boot). I've gone through the Wiki and Mixer settings several times now, with no progress. pavumeter shows me active levels when playing some file, like in totem, but there's nothing to hear. I've both tried system wide use of pulseaudio as user based, all the same.
Any ideas please?
Last edited by scoona (2009-12-10 17:48:46)In the end, if pavucontrol shows that your sound card IS detected and that sound is playing, the issue is probably alsa related. Things to check:-
1. Is the app producing sound (level meter in pavucontrol)?
2. Is the correct output sink selected (under playback tab in pavucontrol, compare with Output Devices tab)?
3. Is the app or output device muted in pavucontrol? Also check output level in the Output Devices tab.
If the three steps are all working, then it almost certainly something being muted, or wrong detection of the sound card etc. -
[Solved] No sound (using Gnome with Pulseaudio)
Hello,
I have an issue with my audio. Since yesterday it has not been working, as in no sound in my headphones
I updated gnome, cinnamon and linux yesterday. I did not however update pulseaudio or anything else alsa related (as far as I can tell).
Another possible cause could be switching from cinnamon to gnome which I did yesterday (I don't know when exactly my audio stopped working).
Other relevant facts:
-My mic is still working fine
-Using the Xonar DG sound card
-Nothing is muted in alsamixer
-not a hardware issue, working fine in dual boot windows
Pulse audio in verbose mode suggest that the issue is not pulseaudio (as does pavucontrol's visualization):

My best guess at this point is that something(tm) is wrong with alsa. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this though. Any advice?
Please let me know if anything important is missing.
Last edited by InfamousBlue (2014-05-02 09:38:49)Did you ever have a copy of front channels or a mix of all of them played on the headphone jack with alsa only? I doubt it. If you kill pulseaudio and run following, what channels do you hear from headphones?
speaker-test -c 8 -t wav -D plughw:DG,0
This is probably more of a pulseaudio issue, since alsa usually does not copy streams.
InfamousBlue wrote:I did not however update pulseaudio or anything else alsa related (as far as I can tell).
Partial upgrades are not supported. There are some remapping examples on the wiki. If you seek a hardware remapping solution try hdajackretask from alsa-tools, it works however for hda compliant cards.

No sound in Gnome [SOLVED]
Need help with sound. I setup Gnome and when I want check sound it says:
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Internal GStreamer error: state change failed.
Please file a bug at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=GStreamer.
Maybe something needs to be put in rc.conf?
What I must to do for the fixing this? Any advices would be apreciated
HOW IT WAS SOLVED:
pacman -S alsa-plugins (additionally to alsa-utils alsa-oss)
afterwards: alsaconf
and sound appeared!
Last edited by vennen (2008-03-29 19:45:30)Just tryed playing a wav with aplay and it didn't give me any errors, but I didn't hear anything if that helps anymore. Running a amixer set MASTER 70% unmute also gives me the unable to find simple control 'MASTER',0 error too, though I can change the volume fine with alsamixer so I'm not sure why that is. The correct module is loaded (snd-hda-intel). Otherwise I'm at a complete loss.
edit: amixer set MASTER 70% gives me the same error on an ubuntu livecd where sound does work so that seems normal. I don't know what changed, but I can now open the volume control so the gstreamer error goes away, however I still can't get any sound, be it with aplay or something else. I'm starting to think the solution may be to pass on arch and move to something better.

System sounds cause gnome to freeze on startup
So far I've found six threads describing this problem, but all remain unresolved. So please excuse my starting yet another thread but I thought it would be the best way to bump them all.
Situation - new to Archlinux but not to Linux. I managed a network install of the base system and then added xorg, gnome and a few bits and pieces and got it all going, more or less. The problem is that sometimes when gnome starts up after the login screen, it freezes after loading the top and bottom panels. Usually the Applications/Places/System menus are visible, and sometimes the workspace switcher on the bottom panel, but no other panel app icons, nor desktop icons. There is a mouse pointer visible which I can move around but left and right clicking do nothing. Usually I can get into a virtual terminal with ctrl-alt-F1, but sometimes I get no response from the keyboard at all and I have to push the computer reset button to reboot. The following threads seem to describe the same problem:
This one. The OP suggests deleting ~/.gnome2/session but there ain't no such file/directory on my system.
That one.
Yonder one.
Another one!
Oh no! Yet another one.
The plot thickens. A clue.
I can confirm the OP's finding in the last thread. Enabling system sounds causes the problem. Deleting the ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/sound directory (not, ~/.gconf/gnome/sound) means that gnome starts up OK, but disconcertingly quietly.
So - any solutions? Any way to get gnome and all the bells, whistles, cheeps and chirrups?
Oh - and I'm enjoying Arch. I'm posting from a (silent) Arch desktop now. I needed a challenge after Gentoo.
Last edited by terracotta_shore (2007-05-06 20:06:42)Thanks for your comments.
I updated today which included esd-0.2.38-1, the new kernel, and other bits, but I still get a lockup if I disable system sounds. But one useful thing (for me). I installed KDE over the weekend - and it plays its sounds OK. Before that if I had a gnome freeze I had to go into a virtual terminal, take out the ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/sound directory and reboot. But now, when gnome froze, I ctl-alt-backspace'd, and then logged into KDE which played me a merry tune just to keep my spirits up. I was then able to delete the sound directory, log out and then log back into a now thawed out, albeit silent, gnome.
Avoids a reboot - which is good.
By the way. Now I've got two wastebin icons (one labelled Trash, the other Wastebin) on my gnome desktop courtesy of KDE. I know why, and I've come across this irritation before, but is there any way of getting rid of the extra desktop icon in gnome without losing the KDE one? I've never figured this one out. -
[SOLVED] No Sound in Gnome - Problem with GStreamer?
I've been using other distros for awhile, but this is my first time with Arch. Spent most of the morning getting it setup and now I'm pretty much done except getting sound to work I believe.
So, not sure what info I should give troubleshooting wise, please ask if anything else is required. Alsa detects it fine, but gstreamer gives me the following error:
No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.

[SOLVED][GNOME] What is the line for the startup sound?
Hi!
I removed the startup sound from GNOME.
I don't even remember if it did work, but I press the remove button a bit too quickly and there is no confirmation box.
Could you launch gnome-session-properties and tell me the command line for the GNOME startup sound please?
Thanks!

[SOLVED] No sound after installing/uninstalling gnome
I thought I'd give Gnome a try again after a year or so away from it using bspwm, just to remind myself of it. Once it was installed though my sound no longer worked within bspwm. Uninstalling it with pacman -Runs left me with no sound still. I then reinstalled Gnome so that I could at least have some sound while I worked out the problem, but this time had no sound in Gnome either. I tried using pacman -Rnsdd the second time but again I'm left with no sound. Now if I open alsamixer, the default sound card appears to be HDMI, but changing it back to PCH does nothing. Anyone have any ideas?
Last edited by shpongledspores (2015-06-03 12:55:05)Fixed it by changing the default control and pcm card to 1 instead of 0 in /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf

[SOLVED] Mic does not work on Intel ICH8 (rev 3) sound card
Hi, folks.
I cannot get my sound card to record anything, using a built-in microphone. Audio output works just fine, though. I hope someone can help me, I have been banging my head against the wall for some time over this issue...
My laptop is Toshiba Satellite A200-1J0 (PSAE6E-04R036G3). alsamixer settings are fine, I tried supplementing additional options to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf, but no luck, tried some of the combinations (model=<> position_fix=<>).
When recording sound with gnome-sound-recorder, with Capture set as input, nothing is heard. Skype can't record anything, either. I can't even get the crackling or hissing sound like some users do.
Should I try to get the latest ALSA?

Last edited by teMplaryum (2010-01-26 10:15:18)Hi there!
I had the very same problem with the same soundcard and found this thread.
The problem got solved for me by adding the same line as you have to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf.
However, I also had to create /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf and add:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba power_save=0
Notice the difference on the "model=toshiba" part.
However, my laptop is not a Toshiba, but a Compal IFL90.
I remember that in Ubuntu I needed(a long time ago) to add a line to /etc/alsa.conf with model=toshiba. I figured it might be worth a try, and well, it did.
I hope this can help someone else.
As for the OP: "You have my thanks!" -
Importing from photo booth, problems with length and sound
I have a 15 min (277 MB) video clip from photo booth that I would like to post to youtube. I can't get it to work and have been wrestling with a few different programs:
When opening the clip in Quicktime, there is no sound. I can open with VLC media player and the sound is fine.
The clip is too long to import to youtube, so i need to edit it into two sections. However, when try to import the clip into iMovie HD 6, the program crashes (maybe because it is again too long?).
So I purchased Quicktime pro so I could edit the clip. I am able to do this fine, but still have the sound problem. When I saved the edited version, and try to open with VLC, still no sound. Same with iMovie, I can import the smaller clip, but no sound.
I now realize that photobooth is less than ideal for long clips...but we got carried away.
Any input would be appreciated!I use KDE, but I had sound issues too when I tried Gnome, and just couldn't get it to work right (One of the reasons I use KDE) but if I remember correctly, I needed to install the esd sound daemon and add it to /etc/rc.conf to get sound in gnome.

GTK Theme :: X-Forwarding :: gnome-settings-daemon
Just wondering if anyone else has come across an error like this. Every GTK application I run using X-Forwarding looks really bad (small fonts, old boxy gnome 2.0 theme). When I attempt to start gnome-appearance properties (also over ssh, as there is no screen connected to the server), I get the following dialog box:
Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager.
I first tried to manually start gnome-settings-daemon, which runs for about 1 second before it quits. During that second all my windows take on the correct theme and fonts. The debug output is confusing and looks like it's crashing right before / after it tries to load a keyboard manager.

The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadClass, invalid event class'.

(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful

Sorry for the long output, I wasn't sure if some small bit of information in there could be relevant. I'm just kinda hoping that someone else has had this problem and came up with an easy fix.
-MattHi!
You might be interested in the workaround found here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/199245
It seems the gnome-settings-daemon crashes while trying to load the keyboard plugin, you might have more luck getting it to work if you deactivate the plugin. It worked here at least.
For this, I have put this line in my session starting script.
gconftool-2 -t bool --set /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/keyboard/active false
I am using NX, but your problem is almost exactly like mine and NX is basically X session forwarding on steroids.
I still don't know what this plugin affects on a gdm session, so I have this untested bit in my .gnomerc file.
gconftool-2 -t bool --set /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/keyboard/active true
(the plugin is reactivated)
I am not sure that the .gnomerc file is executed when gdm starts a session, so it's a guess for now (I will try to edit later with my results).
[EDIT]
The command in the .gnomerc file didn't work.
This plugin, as I thought, sets the keyboard settings, it is quite useful to have it activated.
The only workaround I found (for now) is to test if this is an NX session and if not, activate it. (I don't know if it is doable to check if it is an X11-Forwarding session.)
[/EDIT]
[EDIT2]
Oh wow, old post! In this date of February 19th 2010, I cam across this post.
I had a similar problem and had it resolved with my old self's help today. (I had a hard time searching and found this post... I feel dumb).
Always within an NX session, I had a similar problem. The gnome-settings-daemon still wouldn't start, but with the updates in GNOME, the message changed. Here is the new message:
Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with DBus, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager.
This is the other key you want to deactivate with NX.
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/xrandr/active
The keyboard key still needs to be deactivated.
Cheers for any internet dweller who finds this!
[/EDIT2]
These two modifications will work in any session scripts, but you have to disable the plugin before the gnome-settings-daemon runs, but I think activating it after is not a problem (try activating it when gnome-settings-daemon is running, it will crash under NX).
Anyway, it could be interesting to link to that wiki page you will write here!
Good luck!
Oh, I'm putting some keywords here for search engines to pick this up as the problem seems to be common accross many remote protocols like: VNC gnome-settings-daemon, X11 over SSH gnome-settings-daemon and X over SSH gnome-settings-daemon. xrandr gnome-settings-daemon crash.
