No sound in iPhoto

The music will play in iTunes, it has not been moved, but there is absolutely no sound what so ever to any iTunes music that I select for background music. The music will play in iTunes, it will play when Imported to QT or iDVD but not in iPhoto. I have I have been working on this slide-show for about two weeks now and this happened just last night.
I have rebooted, Repaired Permissions, rebuilt the application, trashed the preferences, tried the Sample Music. etc. It's like I have mistakenly pressed a mute button. Is there such a button or am I overlooking something very simple? Thanks in advance.

Well, it started working again just as mysteriously as it stopped working.
Cheers!

  • No sound in iPhoto since installing Yosemite

Since updating my Mac to Yosemite, I have no sound in movie clips viewed in iPhoto. I am running Yosemite v10.10.1
Some old clips do have sound but many, including the latest movies, do not have sound. However, I can play them ok with sound using QuickTime Player. My iPhoto is v9.6 (910.29). I've tried changing sound settings and restarting the computer but no change. All other sounds are working ok. Any suggestions please?

  • .mpg with sound in Iphoto, no sound in Imovie

    Hello Everyone,
Can someone tell me why when I play a small .mpg movie in Iphoto it will play with sound but will not when I import it into Imovie?
    Many thanks,
    Jim

I guess I must be doing something wrong, being a newbie, I probably am. I downloaded and installed Perian and set it up in system preferences, then loaded a snippeet .mpg file into Quicktime,(I have just the player version not pro) and it played fine. I then imported the same clip into Imovie and will only play with video but still no sound.
Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • No Sound on iPhoto or Quick Time

I have moved to OS Yosemite and the following issue has occurred. My video clips on iPhoto run fine , but there is no sound with the video or ant volume slider on the video. I have used going back to Finder and playing the video back on Quick time, but the same issue exists i.e. the video plays fine, but no volume. I have also played the original file via Real Player and that plays fine with both the video, sound and the volume slider?
My camera is an Olympus SZ-31MR.
I would dearly like to play the clips via IPhoto please

    I also have an Olympus SZ-31. Here's what's happening:
When I shoot videos and then take the SD card out of the camera and put it in my Mac, (videos are .MOV files) I can't get it to play. A message comes up on the computer saying Quick Time can't play the file and it may be damaged. JPEG pics come up fine.  The videos play fine in the camera and also fine when I connect an HDMI cable to the camera and play them on a TV.
I have tried this on 2 different Macs - both have Mavericks - so it's not the computer. I have also tried 2 different SD cards and got the same result. I even tried reformatting the SD card and no change.
I can get the videos to play with Quick View or iMovie but in both cases the audio is missing.
I also checked the Olympus website to see if there was a firmware update and there isn't.
All of my other cameras, Canon, etc, work fine. I take out the SD card and put it in the computer, click on the video file I want to view and no problem. Quick Time opens the files and they play flawlessly.
I then tried an app I have called Smart Converter and it fixed the problem, but if I have to go through some kind of conversion process every time, that's ridiculous, plus you may lose image or audio quality in the conversion process. If I'm with a friend and want to give them the video, that doesn't work either. I should be able to just pop the SD card out of the camera, stick it in their Mac or even PC, load the file onto their computer and they have the video.
    What's the problem? Thanks!

  • No sound with iPhoto slideshow since Mavericks

Since the update to Mavericks I have no sound anymore during the slide shows I made with iPhoto.
Can anyone tell me why this is? iTunes works normally and I can play music also with AppleTV.
    Thanks.

    Hiya,
Had a quick look and found this thread, it seems to resolve the issue (hopefully!).
I haven't tried viewing slideshows in my iTunes yet, hopefully I'll be OK:)

  • No sound from iPhoto videos

    Hi,
I saw that this questions was raised two years ago, but not answered. Hopefully someone today can help me.
Previously, the system worked fine. I could see and hear everything perfectly. I wanted faster performance, so I moved my iPhoto library from an external drive to /Users/<name>/Pictures. Now I can see the videos, but not hear them.
    Other details:
    1. Clips in projects have sound and video.
    2. The issue is ONLY with the clips in the iPhoto library.
    3. Videos imported to the Event Library sound fine.
    4. As an aside, the projects can't find the video unless I edit the XML to point to the new directory.
    System:
    OS X 10.9.5 (sorry, I won't upgrade yet)
    3GB RAM
    1T drive, 300+G free
iMovie '09 (build 8.0.6 (821)) (Can't upgrade unless I upgrade OSX. I shouldn't need to anyways. It worked before.)
Thanks in advance for your help.

What happens if you export the video to the desktop and then add to the email? Will it play from the desktop OK?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • No iMovie sound from iphoto videos

My iphoto videos don't have any sound in iMovie unless I make them into a new project. They always worked before- what happened?

I had the exact same problem, and the solution below fixed it. Somehow my "output" had changed to my iSight. Once I changed it to Built In Audio it worked. BUT, one thing to note, you have to restart your browser in order for the changes to take effect. Because mine didn't work until I did so.
    Thanks!!

  • IPhone 4 videos uploaded to desktop iPhoto have no sound.

I took uploaded several videos from my iPhone 4 to my desktop mac with Yosemite. The video plays but there is no sound.  I deleted them from my phone and now I'm close to tears because I seem to have lost my son's performance at school.  There was sound when we played them on the phone.
Is there a way to either recover the sound in iPhoto, restore the deleted videos on my iPhone, or both?

Are the videos in iPhoto? If so try Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Try play it from there. Is there sound?

  • IPhoto videos missing in iMovie 09's thumbnail view

Recently I imported a bunch of videos into iPhoto 09 from my camera, and when I next opened iMovie 09 it generated thumbnails for them as expected. But when it finished, only about a quarter of the videos were actually there in iMovie. They are all of the same format and everything and it is a random selection of them that for some reason didn't show up in iMovie. Since then I have added more videos to iPhoto in the hopes that when iMovie generated their thumbnails it would find the ones it missed but this didn't happen. All the new ones came through fine though. I've tried restarting iPhoto, iMovie and my computer but nothing worked. Does anyone know of a way to get iMovie to notice these files without having to make copies of them? (I tried the Import button which lets me find them through "Media" but I have to find each one individually and either copy it - which I would rather not do since the files are quite large - or move it, which means I could no longer open them through iPhoto). I also noticed that if I drag the video onto my desktop and re-add it to iPhoto then iMovie does notice it. The only problem with this is I have quite a large number of videos and to make copies of them all then delete them again, and have to find all the ones that are missing would be very tedious, but if nothing else works I will have to resort to this. Does anyone have any ideas or has experienced this before?
Thanks very much for your help

Unfortunately I think you have found all the possible fixes and they are all time consuming. It does sound like iPhoto isn't recognizing and allowing iMovie to then see the iPhoto Videos Library. A typical thing I suggest for folks with BIG iPhoto libraries is to do a iPhoto Library repair.
Hold down the ⌘ Command key + Option, then launch iPhoto. You'll get a dialog box with a number of check boxes. Not knowing exactly which of these is the one that will fix your problem, I say check them all and click OK and let 'er rip. This too will be time consuming as iPhoto reconstructs your whole catalog of photos and videos. If there's any damage it will correct that as well. Will it fix this problem of iMovie not seeing the iPhoto Videos, I don't know. You may also have to try deleting the iPhoto preferences .plist, but try the iPhoto Library rebuild first.

  • Simple, non-bloated usage of iPhoto- no "modified" folder, etc, etc wanted

Apologies if this has all been asked and answered. Searched a little and couldn't quite find the answers I'm seeking.
I've resisted using iPhoto for years, it never seemed to do what I want. Just bought a new iMac with the newer version of iPhoto, so I want to try it.
I have a lot (tens of thousands) of canon .raw images on an external HDD, organized into folders according to time and place shot, etc. I intend to keep them that way (external, and organized as they are). I need a photo organizer that will allow me to quickly see thumbnails of all or any of the photos, organized into whatever classes or groups that I want, with the ability to add and edit tags (date, place, people, etc), and perhaps be able to do simple image tweeking, resizing and printing. Sounds like iPhoto, so I just did a test run by importing a folder of raw images, and set preferences so that it didn't import the master file. Once all of the thumbnails were generated, I selected all, and hit the "play" button, assuming that it was a slideshow, to preview the images. I thought it would quickly make some temporary jpgs for the slideshow, then delete them when I quit. So far so good, but I looked into the "Pictures" directory in my user directory, and I see that 3 new directories were created, under the library called "test" that I created. One is "Data", the second is "Modified", and the third, "Originals". "Data" contains small .jpg thumbnails of all of the photos, at 30 or 40k each. "Originals" also contains all of the file names, same structure, but listed as shortcuts to the originals, also very small at about 4k each, but then there's the "Modified" folder, with 1 to 1.5 MEG files of all of the photos.
I understand the shortcuts and thumbnails, but why the "modified" folder? Is that from the slideshow? Seems that if I decide to process and create a picture, I should have the option of creating jpgs or tifs, and storing them where I wish. What's the point of all of those 1.5Meg files, slowing things down, and taking up space on the hard drive? Don't want them, don't need them. How do I avoid them? Does Aperture make similar 1 meg+ files of all images? I really don't want to spend that money on a cataloging program, but for sure I don't want all of those files needlessly created. Any settings in iPhoto that I'm not seeing to avoid having the "Modified" folder and images created?
    thanks much!

    RS:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The modified files are the jpg conversions of the RAW files. RAW files are like negatives and are never touched in the editing process, even by professional applications. If you shoot RAW then there's no way to avoid having the modified, jpg version of it in iPhoto. Aperture covers the RAW to either tiff or jpg to use. RAW files cannot be edited it it's natural form. It's just the nature of the beast and game.
When you're dealing with RAW then you've committed yourself to using lots of HD space. Unless you're a professional or doing very advanced amateur work, RAW tends to be a little overkill. IMO, it's just the buzz in the photographic industry right now and intended for pros.

  • Using a backed-up iPhoto Library - HELP!!

Hi all. I'm looking for some guidance on how to recover photos that were recovered from a failing hard drive. My wife had a collection of digital photos that were originally imported in to Aperture 2.0. A while later, she started using iPhoto 09 for new photos. Eventually, she imported all of the photos from Aperture into iPhoto 09. Her collection is just over 2,500 photos. Well, last week, her hard drive started to act up and she asked me to back up her pics, and to do it from iPhoto as that's where the total photo collection then resided (Aperture + iPhoto). So I did, and we eventually had her hard drive repaired. After reinstalling iPhoto, I planned to just put the original saved iPhoto library that I backed up for her back into her pictures folder. I did, but now, when we open iPhoto, we are presented with the error message "unable to locate original" and the options are "cancel" or "locate original." So now you see our delimma (the originals went away with the bad hard drive).
Can someone please advise as to how to proceed? All of the photos are there, in the copied library, however, we are unable to use them as they are. Is there a way to convert them so they will work (hopefully without loosing all of their new attributes, e.g. "place", "faces", etc.)
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Regards, bamarich.

What do you mean when you say:
All of the photos are there, in the copied library, however, we are unable to use them as they are.
    and
So now you see our delimma (the originals went away with the bad hard drive).
It sounds like iPhoto was running in Referenced mode.* Was it?
If the actual photos “went away with the bad hard drive“ then they are gone.
    Regards
    TD
*If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.

  • Lost all Iphoto data

I imported photos from my camera this morning only to find that the only images in my iphoto were those!
The files and file structure is still there. I've already tried recreating a new iphoto folder and moving all my old data back into it. Nothing is working. I could sure use some help.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussion.
Can you give us a little more detail? Was there any sign of the older pics at all? This sounds like iPhoto made a new library for itself.
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss
If you must make a new library then putting photos into the iPhoto Library Folder will not work. iPhoto is a database and the pics will need to be imported. To rebuild the library: move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find there the Originals folder. From there drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
Don't import anything from the Data or Modified folders as that will cause duplication.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • IPhoto- force quit, lost photos

Yesterday I was uploading pictures from a recent trip off my Nikon D60 into my iPhoto library. The upload was almost finished and it asked me if I wanted to "keep originals" or "delete originals." I pressed "delete originals" as I always do to get the pictures off my camera and free up space. It's almost done deleting and finishing up the upload, but then my iPhoto freezes and stops responding, so I'm forced to force quit. I re-open my iPhoto and none of the pictures had uploaded. I check my camera and 4/5ths of my photos are gone. I uploaded the pictures I had left into my iPhoto and it worked.
But is there any way to get back the lost photos? Please help!

    Anna
Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
It is strongly recommended that you never have iPhoto (or any other computer program) delete your photos for exactly the reason you are posting about - software or hardware failures can lose photos
A much better practice is to upload the photos the camera to iphoto and unmount the camera - verify that the photos are safe and sound in iPhoto and then use your Camera's format command to reformat the card thereby renewing the care format and erasing the photos
An even better practice is to use a USB card reader to upload your photos instead of the camera - it is safer and usually faster
Media Recover - http://www.mediarecover.com/ - probably can recover your photos - download it and run the trial version to see what you can recover - to actually recover the photos you must purchase the software

  • IPhoto '08 slideshow settings

In the previous version of IPhoto there was a setting to have the slides fit the music so that when the show stated, the music started too, and when the show ended, the music was over...all calculations were done to fit each...AM I missing this in the new '08 version or is it there...it was a great help and made the presentation professional...HELP !!!!!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What version of iPhoto are you using? iPhoto 08 (V7) doesn't have the sliding panel theme nor any other theme except what is considered "Classic".
It sounds like you're running iPhoto 09 (V8), right? Are you able to see any other themes in the Themes pane? Are you able to print a photo? It sounds like iPhoto has lost it's connection to the themes in the HD/Library/Application Support/iPhoto/Themes folder.
Check to make sure the Themes folder is in the right place. Then delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and reboot your Mac. Try the slideshow again. If that doesn't fix it you'll have to reinstall iPhoto as follows:
    Restoring iPhoto Themes
First look in your User/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder for a Themes folder. If you find it there move it to the HD/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder and reboot. Then try iPhoto again. That may save you having to go thru the reinstallation process described below:
1 - delete the current application.
2 - delete any files with iPhoto in the file name that reside in your HD/Library/Receipts folder.
3 - delete the Themes folder from your HD/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder. Also look in the User/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder for a Themes folder. If there is one there then delete it also.
4 - mount the system disk that came with your computer, double click on the "Install Bundled Software Only" file and do a custom install selecting only iPhoto.
After installing reinstall the latest iPhoto updater again followed by a repair of disk permissions with Disk Utility. Also make sure you're running the latest Quicktime version.

  • Iphoto not creating books

Hi I have aperture 2 and iphoto installed. and when i go to create a new book in iphoto the book type is greyed out and there is no list of the themes that should be there... Any help anyone?
Yes it shows in aperture but the wife wants to use iphoto.
    thanks,

Sounds like iPhoto cannot find your themes:
Check out OT's post in this thread:

Look in your User/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder for a Themes folder. If you find it there move it to the HD/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder and reboot. Then try iPhoto again. That may save you having to go thru the reinstallation.
