No sound in QT movies streamed in iTunes

Has anyone had loss of audio from streamed movie trailers/music videos in iTunes after installing the QT7? I installed the preview versions 1st, and immediately afterwards lost any audio from the streaming video. Saving them and playing them afterwards worked fine. After upgrading iTunes to v5 and QT7 to the release version, nothing changed. It seems to be limited only to streaming.

I want to bump this post because I'm having the same problem. Everything else about my iTunes v5 seems to be fine except this (it crashed a couple of times when I was copying a cd but I don't think that's any big deal).

  • ATV2 resets while watching movies streaming from itunes

I have movies that are located on my Mac Mini and I am streaming them via itunes to my ATV2. While watching them on the ATV2 about 30-40 minutes in the movie, the movie will stop and the ATV2 will reset. I will initially act as if in cannot connect to the network or the mac mini. Then it will find them and connect. At which point you can navigate back to the movie and watch it, until it happens again in 20-30 minutes.

I found exactly the same problem and discovered the issued disappeared when I "quit" all "downloading" programs whilst watching TV via ATV2. The issue was particularly frequent when i was watching while downloading using my torrent client (utorrent). Quitting this resulted in a immediate an permanent improvement provided the torrent client remained closed. Interestingly it did not seem to affect, to the same degree listening to music through iTunes while downloading!
After experimenting I also noted that the problem existed, albeit less frequently, when i was downloading movies from the iTunes store. I experimented with a variety of Apple and non-Apple routers and ethernet cables. As long as i was downloading there was an issue using the ATV. For what its worth I also noted that when the ATV2 went awry it also occasionally coincided with a temporary outage on my ADSL connection. After all the experimenting i have concluded its the ATV2 that is the route cause and not the router/network arrangement etc.
Anyone want to try fixing the problem this way? i cant believe that its a coincidence.

  • Apple TV, Time Capsule (or Airport Extreme) and streaming movies without running iTunes?

I'm thinking of buying an Apple TV but as far as I know I'll need my computer on to run movies from my iTunes account, which is something I really don't want to do every time I want to watch a movie, just wondering if this can first of all be confirmed?
Also, If I buy Apple TV and an apple time capsule (or an Airport extreme connected to a HDD), can I stream movie files located on the time capsule (or HDD) to the AppleTV without having to turn on the computer and run iTunes?

Yes you need your computer on if you want to stream from its library, even if the library is on an external or network drive.
However any purchases you have made from iTunes can be stream from the iTunes Store at any time without your computer being on.

  • Why can't Apple TV stream movies like the iTunes store can?

I'm in the UK with an Apple TV 2nd Gen. 9Mb/s broadband speed checked and have conclusively failed to rent one single movie since I bought this a year ago. Every time I log in, select the film, purchase it, hit play and all I get is "connection error please try later" Playing movie trailers and everything else is fine. Surely the point of renting a movie online is so you can watch it straight away. Lovefilm works just fine via my PS3.
The other day I tried again on Apple TV with the same error so figured I'd try and rent the movie direct from iTunes Store on my laptop, hey presto, 2 mins later I'm watching my film via my Macbook Pro hooked up to my TV.
So the big question is: Why can not Apple TV stream a movie like the iTunes Store can? Of course I appreciate that a certain amount of buffering has to happen but that is never evident on Apple TV.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Intermittent problems
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.
    Consistent Problems
A frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is the service being blocked on the network. Make sure your network isn't hidden, has a unique name, that MAC address authentication is disabled, security is set to use WPA 2 Personal and that there is only one router/device acting as a DHCP server and providing NAT services.
Make sure your router/computer allows access over the following ports
    Port
    Type
    Protocol
    Used By
    80
    TCP
    HTTP
    AirPlay

    MDNS (Win)
    Bonjour/AirPlay
    49163
    UDP
    MDNS (Win)
    Bonjour/AirPlay
Refer to your router manual/manufacturer for any settings that are specific to that model.
Another frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is security software, in many cases configuring it correctly, disabling it or even uninstalling it can help, but in some cases the security software can cause problems that simply reconfiguring, disabling or uninstalling cannot reverse.
If you are consistently unable to activate AirPlay, have tried all the steps in this article and have security software installed on your system, you might benefit from contacting its provider or participating in any online forums they run to discuss the matter with them.

  • Possible solution to ATV2 slow library streaming.  iTunes movie buffering issues

    All,
I'm not a common user of forums so forgive ettiqute/nomenclature errors.
We were recently having issues with non-stop buffering when trying to stream movies from our iTunes library.  I've seem numerous topics and posts on this same issue.  Since we had just purchased the ATV2 we were able to call the apple care number and the tips we received made the difference.  I have to preface this by saying that we also use an Airport Extreme router.  The "helpdesk dude" had us do an "about this mac>more info>system report>WiFi".  Our transmit rate was 5 and it should be way way up there at the 100+ range(some lucky peeps get a 400-450 range I guess).   So if you are having these issue perhaps check the channel you are using and your strength of signal.  We changed channels and went to a transmit rate of 117 and our issues are resolved.  There is a signal/noise component aswell, but we ended up focusing on the transmit rate.  So take this for what its worth, hope it helps.

OK — I've gotten things resolved. Unplugged and replugged the ATV2 for a reset. Now everything streams just fine — even a rented iTunes movie from my Mac. Too, I have now gone into the ATV2 settings and instructed it to select standard (non-HD) movies for rentals. This is many times faster and on our large flat screen Sony, I see no difference. In any case, HD or not, the wise thing to do is to do your download well in advance of viewing — i.e. hours. The flash memory in the ATV2 should hold it for at least 48 hours (or so Apple Support tells me). As it turns out, "streaming", even with a 10 mb line and an "N" wireless system, streaming is not exactly streaming. But it comes closer to it if you select non-HD movies.

Many of your points are totally legitimate.
    This one, however, is not:
…To put it another way, the design of the site seems to be geared much more towards its regular users than those the site is supposedly trying to "help"…
The design and management of the forums for more than five years have driven literally dozens of the most valuable contributors and "regulars" away from the forums—permanently.
The only conclusion a prudent, reasonable person can draw from this state of affairs is that Adobe consciously and deliberately want to kill these forums by attrition—without a the PR hit they would otherwise take if they suddenly just shut them down.

  • Apple TV not streaming all iTunes movies

I have been using ATV successfully now for about 8 months. In the last 60 days, ATV only recognizes about half of the new movies I add to iTunes. I use Handbrake in exactly the same way on each movie but when I stream my iTunes library to ATV, it only recognizes a portion of them.
Oddly, I can play all of the movies in iTunes, Quicktime and even my iPod.
This problem has been driving my nuts for 2 months now. any advice is greatly apprecaited.

    Hello!
I have a similar or the same problem... Rip all my movies with Handbrake Tv setting!
But I have different movies that doesn't stream at different days... And some days it works fine!
Here's a solution for you... When a movie doesn't stream (because it says that Apple Tv doesn't know the file) I start syncing the movie instead! But you don't have to sync the whole movie, just start it for some seconds... Then I try to start the movie again at the appleTV and now it works fine!!
Seems that it knows the file when you syncronising the movie but not always when you stream it?? Weard... Cause I can sync all my movies but from time to time I can't watch some movies that isn't on the harddrive on the ATV.. But try to sync it for a few seconds and then start it even if it isn't finnished syncing!!
Hope you understand me and good luck!!

  • Can rent a movie from the iTunes store on my computer, and then stream it to my apple TV (2nd gen)?

Can rent a movie from the iTunes store on my computer, and then stream it to my apple TV (2nd gen)?

Thank you alleycat. I have two rental movies in my iTunes library in the rentals section top left of the window that have not been played. I have home sharing turned on on both my apple TV and my Mac. Both machines are completely software updated. I can see all of my owned movies in the Computer>Library>Movies section of the menus, but neither the rentals themselves nor a rental fouler are anywhere to be found on the apple TV. I dropped by the apple store on the way home from work and they suggested that it should be working just as you described, and suggested a restore, which I've performed. Still no rentals from the Mac library are visible on the apple TV. Any ideas?

  • Movies purchased from iTunes to stream to LG smart TV from NAS via DLNA?

Want to stream HD movies purchased from iTunes and stored on a WD NAS drive on LG smart TV (42LN578V)? Movies have standard iTunes DRM protection and so won't currently play on TV. Why is this not possible?! DRM or iTunes app for TV would offer sufficient protection for copyright holders surely? PC not up to job (so can't 'cast' to TV) and this would be a backwards step anyway. Must 'play' on TV in HD & 5.1. Is this not possible?!

iTunes running on windows laptop by the way. Don't want this to have to be on in order to watch the movies. Can an Apple TV box be an 'authorised device' for use in playing iTunes movies and then stream them directly from NAS?

  • Can a movie rented through iTunes stream to an iOS device?

I am inquiring about whether I can stream a movie rented via iTunes on my iPad Retina.  I have 32 GB of RAM on the device and do not wish to waste space on downloading a movie to my device if at all possible.

No. iTunes does not stream.  You can start to watch the movie as it downloads if your Internet connection is fast enough to keep up with it, but it will be completely downloaded to the device any way.
Once done you can always remove it. I don't see how a temporary rental is wasting space, its not like you can't get that space back once the rental expires and it gets deleted from the device.

  • Apple TV 2nd Generation slow streaming for Movies from my iTunes

Just taken delivery of a 2nd Generation AppleTV. Everything works but when selecting a movie from my iTunes library it takes a very, very long time before it plays. I can fast forward and reverse but cannot play. Sometimes it takes 15 to 20 minutes before I can play it. Is there anything I can do to improve this? I could go and get the DVD and play it in my DVD player much faster than this.

I have the same problem with mine: the Apple TV 2 is so slow to start streaming movies I initially thought it wasn't working at all. I'd select a movie, and after many minutes of no result I'd cancel and try another. Turns out it's just so slow I though it wasn't functional.
My setup: movies on iMac (current model 27" i7, OS X 10.6.5), stock internal drive, Airport Express running 7.4.2 in 201.11n only mode 2.4 GHz), no other computers or devices on the network.
I tried swapping in a wired router and connected everything via Ethernet, but it made no difference.
Also tried selecting a movie, waiting the incredibly long time for it to start streaming, and then cancelling out and starting all over with the same movie (to see if it caches). The problem persists.
I wondered if it was the size of my movie library. I have about 230 movies in iTunes. So I tried leaving the Apple TV in "browse your movies" mode overnight to see if it needed time to prefetch things from the movie library. That didn't work either.
I've tried a couple dozen movies from various sources (home movie from iMovie, DVD ripped by Handbrake using both "Apple TV" and "Apple Universal" settings, and Ripit), without any change. I'm going to try the many-chapters idea and made a movie with tons of chapters to see if that helps (will report back).

  • Streaming movie rented in iTunes to Apple TV2

    Hi
I have a home network set up, and from our iMac stream movies, music etc to Apple TV2. Wireless router is Airport Extreme, with a Time Capsule acting as an extender. All hardware is running the latest version of software.   Sharing of movies and music, photos from the mac's library is working flawlessly, but I cannot get movies rented from iTunes store to stream to the Apple TV. In iTunes on the mac Rentals is a seperate folder in the library to movies I have copied to the iTunes library.  I cannot see the rented movie in my shared library on ATV2 or a section for rentals.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Then you did not rent the movie on the AppleTV.
