No sound in videos problem!

Ever since I updated my desktop Mac with Mavericks I have been having ongoing issues with movies I have on my Mac.
They were originally downloaded as (.avi) format however with the new Mavericks these videos go through a conversion process turning them
into (.mov) videos. My issue is that now these videos dont play sound!
Is there any way I can solve this problem?
Also, due to the update of Mavericks I have found Perian to be of no help either.
I am using Quicktime Player 10.3
Thanks!

Thanks for that it has helped having me to convert each and every video I decide to watch. However, some videos are still playing without sound... Is there any way to fix this?
I recently downloaded a TV series and it happens to be these videos (.avi)  that dont play sound whereas actual movies (.avi) I have stored on my Mac do play with sound.
It depends on what you mean by "fix" and what kind of audio data is stored in the AVI container.
Normally, the easiest way to play AVI files is to use the free VLC player which contains its own support codecs. This approach will usually play the files correctly but means they remain incompatible with the Mavericks QT embedded structures. Another approach is to make the files compatible with the structure(s) which are embedded in the Mavericks OS—i.e., either convert the AVI files to MPEG-4 AVC or Apple ProRes video files with a supported audio compression format or add codec support so that the files can be played in the QT 7 player depending on how you wish to "fix" file compatibility with QT.
If the files can be played in VLC but you still choose to convert the files for QT X, QT 7, mobile device, TV, and/or QL compatibility under Mavericks, then the best approach would usually be to use the free HandBrake app which uses the same codec support plackage as the VLC player. While this approach can cause a degredation in video quality (depending on settings used), it does provide the widest range of QT compatibility for the resulting files using the widest potential range of user options.

  • HP Envy dv6 sound and video problems

I bought my laptop just over a year ago. In the past two days, it's developed problems with both video (video loads but freezes, usually at .02 into the video), and with audio, which works fine for a few minutes after start-up, but then goes out. The problems occur whether the video or audio is in a browser or a dvd or a downloaded file. Further, the mute button is unresponsive at those times - when I hit it, it doesn't change (turn red for mute). I found one response in the forums but it was for a different Envy model (mine does not have a Beats button). I tried it anyway but it didn't work. Halp!

Hello unerenarde, welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that you have an issue with the audio and video on your notebook. That this occurs from multiple sources. I will try to assist you with this.
I would first recommend updating all drivers. To do this use the HP Support Assistant. This tool will check what drivers need to be updated and provide them to you.
After that, take a look at these documents:
No Sound from the Speakers or Headphones (Windows 7)
TV and DVD Video Playback is Choppy and Skips
The titles may not be exact to what your issue is, but the steps might be helpful.
If those fail to assist with the issue, please reply back with the Model and Product numbers for your notebook, as well as the currently installed operating system.
Let me know how this goes.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

When I'me listening to music on iTunes or other programs or when I'm watching movies,  the music (or movie) is not continuous and jerk (I'me not sure it's the good word, english is not my mother language ) It's rather unpleasant.
And often when the computer is working I hear a kind of whisling coming from my computer, I think it's the processor but I'm not sure.
    Any ideas anybody??

  • Update 8.2.0 (65) sound and video problems. Adobe please help

I have just updated to the latest version of Premiere as indicated. I get occasional black flashes on video even when it's static. Also I'm using an iMac on a thunderbolt cable driving premiere off my laptop. I have opted to route sound via thunderbolt to the iMac. This is working perfectly for ALL applications other than Premiere where it insists on through the macbook speakers instead of the iMac sound system. Please help

Thank Peter. You have helped me sort the audio issues which has helped immensely.
I tried 'clean' on media cache but it's not resolved the issue. What I have noticed is if I change the renderer engine to software only then the black flickering is not present. However I feel I must be missing out on acceleration that my laptop is capable of and putting extra strain on the processor when the video hardware should be handling this. Any advice on how I can get this working without switching to software based rendering?
    Thanks again

  • Latest 13" MBP Sound and video problem

So I got my hands on a new 13" macbook pro yesterday. Got it home and installed leopard. Since I have a macbook (1gen) as well I choosed to use the agent to let me transfer some settings from my old MB. A few hours later and the transfer was done and nothing worked as I hoped it would do. I had to set up mail, office and everything like it was newly installed. Figured I didnt bother with all the hassle and finally swapped the disks. And that worked, mail, firefox and office was working perfectly just like on my old macbook.
BUT, I have no sound I get the "stop" sign when trying to adjust the volume and such. Is there a easy fix for this? (besides reinstalling, and thus loosing info again.)
    Second.
I have an external 23" (2006) ACD that I have connected to my MBP via the mini display port. And Im seeing some green noise on the status bar on my windows?
I will try to take some pictures and post here.
    Notes.
When rebooting, I dont see the normal boot window, Im seeing a lot of text, like booting linux. Is this normal? (Dont remember what it says)
I have all the software updates installed.

Grimnar, I am like you I don't like having to re-setup everything from the scratch and I had the same issue of sound after swapping the HDD from old MB to new MBP 13", but I found a fix for it with little tweaking, steps I took is in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9619580#9619580
Mind you though, I also reinstalled 10.5.7 combo update on the new MBP 13" after swapping of the HDD to make the OSX recognize most of the MBP hardware before making the backup copy (Step 0).

    Drivers from installation CD
    Realtek audio driver 5.10.00.5761
    ATI Catalyst 5.6 drivers
I bought this board to run a HTPC system and seem to be having problems with slow running and video playback.
Apart from windows / drivers and PowerDVD nothing else is running on this machine, no firewall, virus checking etc.
The first thing I noticed was how long it took to load windows, defrag the hard drive and load other applications, compared to my old Celeron 2.4 / MSI 865pe machine.
Video play back using PowerDVD from the hard drive or DVD player is extremely stuttery, the sound is awful ( speech sounded like people were under water ).
I disabled the on board sound and installed an old sound blaster card which improved the sound quality.
Do I need to purchase a separate video and sound card to be able to watch DVDs or should the on board sound and video be enough.
    Thanks for the help

OK....that's consistent with prior reports of slow SATA performance with Win2K and SATA using that combination.  If you check Device Manager for the "IDE Channel" for the drive, it should also report operating in PIO Mode, i.e. it's not running DMA.  That would confirm the problem.
I'm not sure yet what is a good solution.  The combination works in XP (IDE mode and XP IDE driver), but not Win2K, so I'm guessing DRIVER.  I did suggest trying install of the SATA driver and/or switching Bios mode to RAID and trying the SATA driver during Setup at F6 prompt to others, but don't recall seeing any posts suggesting those recommendations worked.
In my opinion, that's the first item to work-on/fix.  I'm also aware that the latest ATI IGP driver 5.6 set is reported buggy and the Realtek drivers on the latest MSI CD are buggy.  Drivers on the orignal CD worked OK.  I did post a link for the original Realtek drivers for download on another Forum thread.

  • Why does a Safe Boot fix my video problem?

After visiting my local Genius Bar twice (and getting two different answers), I erased and reinstalled Snow Leopard 10.6 on my late-2006 "white plastic" iMac.
I reinstalled the version of SL that came with the iMac, then upgraded it twice to OS 10.6.8. Software Updater says all of my OS components are up-to-date.
My video-corruption problems ("ghosting", "tearing", pixelation of icon, then the kernel CRASHES within 20 minutes) appear when I boot normally. But they permanently disappear when I reboot into the Safe Mode!
I've search Apple.com and every other site I can find without a clear answer to this:
What extensions, StartUp items, software daemons or gremlins DO NOT load in Safe Mode? Shouldn't one of them be the cause of my problem? Or does Safe Boot work on a hardware-level, too?
This happens on ALL accounts, both Admin and regular users. No external devices are connected except the wired mouse and wired keyboard.
I've zapped the PRAM three times, and I've unplugged it for hours. Disk Utility shows everything is good, too. There's about 50 gigs left on the internal 750 GB hard drive.
The so-called "Geniuses" both ran their Triage OS off an external drive and my iMac hardware passed ALL of their tests. One said it just needed a reinstall (a free fix!!), and the other said my video card is bad ($800, and I have to use an outside repair shop).
Can someone give me an idea how to proceed? I've been working in Safe Mode for days, but that prevents me from using: Sound, my home network, fonts, Preview, editing in iPhoto, etc.
    Thanks.

    Hi, Mike,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
I read the linked post about QE, but I don't see how it could help me troubleshoot my problem. Could you clarify: is QE a piece of "software" (that is, a file -- like an extension)?
If QE IS a piece of software that is disabled in a Safe Boot, I should be able to move it to my Desktop and restart. If my video problem is eliminated, the QE software is the problem, right?
But then, if my problem is caused by a file/extension, why would the problem occur (and be eliminated in a Safe Boot) right after I re-installed the OS? Shouldn't all the System software be pristine right after re-installation? But since it's NOT fixed by the re-installation, it seems like a hardware problem -- like the expensive video card. That's what's confusing me.
So, I'm proceeding as if the problem is caused by a file being loaded into memory and I'm trying to disable the items that don't load in Safe Boot Mode one-at-a-time. I just need a specific list of what those items are (and their locations on my hard drive).
In OS/9, I used Conflict Catcher to do this automatically, but I haven't found an OSX app to do the same. So I'm trying to do it manually.
Please excuse my layman's terms. Any help is appreciated.

  • Video problems on MacBook

    Hi there,
My sister bought a MacBook not very long ago and I've tried to set it up to play videos she have downloaded on the internet. However, there is something very strange with this computer and playing videos. I'm aware that there are many codecs that aren't supported out of the box with Quicktime, so I've installed Perian, DivX, Flip4Mac etc. on it for it to work. However, when I try to play them in Quicktime it's only sound, no video, or the video is all messed up with strange colours and messy sound.
On my computer, an iMac G5, the videos in question plays wonderfully and I think I have about the same codecs installed as my sister. But to be sure I tested them in VLC as well. They work great in VLC for me, on my iMac, but it's the same problem as with Quicktime on the MacBook, almost as if there was some kind of video card issue. I've tried several formats, like MPEG1 and some AVI, which usually plays fine in VLC, and it does on the iMac, but not on the MacBook.
Another problem with that MacBook that might deserve a new thread is that the ethernet network port suddenly stopped working some weeks ago. I've examined the computer with Apple's hardware test and it didn't find any problems at all, but nothing happens when you plug in an ethernet cable. Perhaps the port is broken, or could it be software related?

Ok, so I've now reinstalled os x but the problem persists. I find no other solution than to bring it in for repair. However, how will I be able to explain this problem to the support? Since it works with some movie file, like most .mov files I've tried and the movies at Apple's QT gallery, how will they be able to track down the problem? Maybe they just go like "Oh, it works with this test movie, so the problem is solved"?
This has to be one of the weirdest problems I've encountered in all my years as a Mac user.

  • Diagnosing video problem

    Hi all,
I've got a PowerMac G5 2.0 GHz from May, 2004. It has the original ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card. I recently had to replace the logic board (with a working used one). That worked fine for months, but now I'm getting video problems. I'll get flashing vertical stripes of short horizontal bars. Sometimes it seems that if I jiggle the display connector at the computer, the screen settles down for a while, but it is not completely certain that this is cause and effect. I hooked up a TV to the DVI port (using Apple's DVI-Video adaptor) and got the same issues, so it's not the display or the cable. I'm hoping that it's a graphics card problem, and not the "new" logic board. Is there a troubleshooting procedure, short of buying and trying a new graphics card, that would let me narrow down the problem?
    Thanks for any help.
    -Aron

What you describe sounds like a failing graphics card.  My particular troubleshooting process is to swap in another one to see if it works.  It's handy to have a few extra parts.  Short of that, you might try downloading ATIccelerator and using it to downclock the card.  Downclock both the GPU and memory by 5 to 10%.  If it helps, that would give a more clear indication.
    http://thomas.perrier.name/
Also, if downclocking helps, it might still be possible to salvage the card.  As with virtually everything else, Japamac has a nice tutorial on the subject of card maintenance:
    First read his overview:
    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/Blog/16196A0F-952B-47ED-A9F9-91F7B0E CA431.html
Then read the teardown instructions for your specific card:
    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/Blog/C874D84E-96DD-4DFF-9566-7C66BE0 65BB5.html
Applying fresh thermal compound is not an optional step.  Maybe wait to see what others have to say about this suggestion before purchasing the compound.  The fact that it isn't doing it all of the time leads me to believe that it might not be too late, but I don't know how common it is to bring them back once they start showing problems.
Before anything, I might try reseating the card and not just wiggling it from the outside.  Take it out, blow out the dust with some compressed air, and verify that the fan moves freely.  Clean the contacts on the card with a pencil eraser.  Also verify that the fan is actually working when you put it back in.
There might be something else obvious to try that totally eludes me at the moment.  Hopefully, you'll get some better feedback than this.  Good luck.

  • No sound or video in Finder Preview window anymore

    Hello everybody,
My hard drive recently crashed and I had to get a replacement drive, reinstall OSX, and migrate my backup clone back to the hard drive with SuperDuper. Everything is running fine, except for some reason I can't hear any sound, or see any video when previewing movies or mp3s in preview. The time marker moves to the right, but there is no sound or video. Sound works in itunes and in Quick time, but not in the preview?Volume is up all the way. I tried some sort of suggested adjustment in the Audio Midi utilities screen to no avail. Any suggestions

Ok, i figured out what the problem was. For some reason I had to install Flip4Mac to make the previews work again. Hope this helps everyone else.

  • No Sound on Videos

Ok, so I have a few videos I want to put on my ipod. Well actually I have put them on, but, only one works. I know that you have to convert the files into m4v before putting them on iPod, and that's what I have done. However, previous to the conversion only ONE of those files was an MOV file (.mov) and the rest were mpg/mpeg . The ".mov" video worked on my iPod, sound and video. The others didn't, only the video part, no audio. Why is this? I know that there have been a lot of posts relating to this, but I found my situation to be a little more specific and decided to give it a shot, since the other sweren't so much in my "ballpark" of problems.
    Thanks

iMovie does not work with muxed MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 clips
When using any version of iMovie, please note that you cannot import muxed (multiplexed) MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video clips into projects. If you try, one or more of the following things can happen:
iMovie refuses to import the clip and displays an alert instead (such as "File could not be imported because QuickTime could not parse it. -2048").
iMovie allows you to import the clip, however:
You won't hear audio on playback.
You won't see video on playback.
When you export the project to QuickTime, iDVD, or a connected camera, the clip no longer contains audio.
When files are muxed, they contain interleaved audio and video tracks (they're mixed together instead of stored in separate tracks). Because of this, iMovie cannot support them.
If you want to find out if a movie file is "muxed," follow these steps:
Open the original movie file in QuickTime Player.
From the Window menu, chose Show Movie Info.
Click the More Info disclosure triangle in the Movie Info window (if it's closed).
Note the entry next to "Format."
If the format is "MPEG1 Muxed" or "MPEG2 Muxed," you can't use the clip in iMovie. You may want to consider using a third-party utility to convert the clip to DV format for use in your iMovie project.
Note: If you have the QuickTime MPEG-2 playback component installed, it may not change the issues described above. Editing muxed MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files is not supported in iMovie, even with this component installed
Understand about iMovie Now? No under no circumstance should you convert twice. Quality will go downhill and fast. I convert to MPEG-4 ASP (Simple Profile). This is why all my videos continue to play correctly even after the new IPOD updater. I am not a MAC user so I will refrain from suggesting any programs. Folks have mentioned Handbrake although. Learning how to identify the different video formats and the different standards within each is important to success and getting your IPOD full of videos.

  • I get sound no video when using AirPlay.  Any ideas?

I get sound no video when using AirPlay.  Any ideas?

Do you get an "HDCP error"?
Since the last ATV software update, I have had  problems playing You Tube content from the iPad to the ATV using airplay, yet the same content from the You Tube channel on the ATV plays fine. I get the dreaded "HDCP error" which is nonsense, as YouTube content does not have this protection. Netflix also gives the same error. (I have posted seperately about this problem.)
I have had a couple of years of fault-free playing with my setup, the only thing that has changed is the Apple ATV software. Ergo, they need to fix whatever bug they introduced. None of the recommended "fixes" have worked.

  • My IPOD WONT PLAY SOUND ON VIDEOS

i just got an ipod and i can play videos but there is no sound. the videos i want to play are music videos i have downloaded and ren and stimpy videos and meet the barkers tv series. i have clicked convert to ipod in itunes and they convert but after they convert they lose there sound on itunes and when i transfer them to the ipod there is no sound. has anyone else got this problem or have an idea to correct it. please help cuz i have minimal ipod / computer knowledge and i need all the help i can get thanks

i downloaded a few videos and they played fine on
itunes. BUT, they couldnt be added to my ipod. i
followed instructions to convert them for my ipod but
the converted videos dont have any sound. when i put
the converted videos on my ipod, they wont play- they
show up like a song- white background, name of song
and band, and, instead of the album cover, there is a
still frame from the video. is there something wrong
    with the videos??? help!!!!
That sometimes happend to me when I converted the videos using Itunes....So, I use this converter instead...
    Videora Ipod Coverter
    http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/
It'a a free program to download and your videos should play fine in your ipod once you use this to covert them.
As for the videos not playing for you, it could be the fact that you coverted them using Itunes, so try the above converter instead and that should work okay. If that still doesn't work for you try getting your settings back to their original state - Go to 'Settings' and then 'reset Settings' and this will put your settings back the way they were once you bought the ipod originally. The videos should definately play in your ipod then.
If you need anymore help, just let me know, I know how annoying it is when the videos won't play properly!!!
    Good luck with it!
