No sound on 2nd/3rd Gen 8gb

I have an iPod Touch, 2nd/3rd Gen with the 4.01 software on it. It does not seem to be making any sound, externally or with headphones. There is no sound from apps.
Strangely, if you try to play music, when you hit play, about a second later it will stop and go back to the music menu. So there isn't just a problem with the sound not outputting, but the Touch seems to know something is wrong and won't play music? Does that make sense?

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • Why cant i get ios 5 for my 3rd gen 8gb?

I have a 3rd Gen 8GB ipod touch why does it keep saying 4.2.1 is the lastest firmware?

Here is a quote from Amazon cust support (I bought mine there).
"The NEWEST 8 GB touch on the market, which comes installed with iPhone OS 3.1 and was released in September 2009 along with the 3rd generation 32 GB and 64 GB models, is still being referred to as 2nd generation by Apple support even though Apple Marketing initially referred to it as 3rd generation."
On the back of the device if the model number is #A1288, it is the 2nd generation. The 3rd generation is #A1318.
The apple website also says the 3rd gen only came in 32 or 64GB.

Bummer, pretty much we got screwed in a marketing scam. However, Amazon is giving me a refund...and after having it for two years (they are great). So the only real option is to try to go that route. Most retailers won't go for it though.

  • 3rd gen 8GB ipod touch stuck on connect to itunes

This isn't fair. I just bought this 3rd gen 8gb ipod touch (my first ipod ever, only owned Mp3 players) from best buy today and i can't even use it...
I'm going to start from square one, this will be long-winded, so forgive me in advance. But detail might help you guys help me out...
Okay, all giddy with excitement I boot up my touch for the first time. It tells me to connect it to itunes. I do that, hooking up the touch to the computer via usb. Vista detects it, installs the "apple mobile device" drivers just fine. Good, so then I open up itunes -- latest version -- and it's telling me to set up my ipod; name it, etc. Alright, I'm almost bursting at the seams here with excitement, but then itunes is notifying me that iOS4 is out. I upgrade, it takes a few minutes to do its stuff, it's done, and bam it's working. I play with the ipod a little bit, looking at the apps that already came with it. I disconnect, play with it, then reconnect to the computer again.
So now, itunes for some reason is doing a "recovery" process -- i did not tell it to initiate this. So it's in the process of "recovering" (backing up, i guess?) and Vista is prompting me to install the driver "Apple Mobile Device (Recovery)" I tell it ok, locate and install them. It does that, I'm guessing, for it's now prompting me to insert a CD. Well, there is no CD so I tell it to find this driver on the internet. It says "cannot find drivers check manufacturer's support site blah blah blah." At this point, itunes tells me that it cannot complete the "recovery process" -- no error code or anything, and the dialog box closes.
Now, my ipod goes into the connect to itunes screen. Itunes does not recognize it, for it does not even display my ipod at all. Vista does however, and each time i connect the ipod to the computer it attempts to install the "apple mobile device (recovery)" driver and fails each time. I don't know what's happening. I've lost all functionality in my ipod, can't even get into DFU. iTunes just refuses to recognize it. I've tried all of those fixes (reinstalling itunes, rebooting, trying that method where you go into device manager and update the apple mobile device (recovery) drivers....all of it doesn't work). I've spent hours websearching...
And I'm at a loss. I'm ready to throw this thing somewhere. Can you guys suggest any help for me? Please...

  • IOS 6 SSL security patch for 2nd & 3rd gen iPad?

I see that they released an iOS 6 update for earlier phones and iPods.  Will this also work on 2nd & 3rd gen iPads?  I do not want to upgrade to iOS 7
    Thanks

No. It is only for the iPod Touch 4th generation and the iPhone 3G S.

  • Difference between 2nd & 3rd gen 32GB touch?

I looked through the recent posts & couldn't find an answer, so hopefully you folks can help me.
I'm thinking of buying a 32GB touch. The 2nd gen is a bit cheaper than the 3rd gen. What are the differences between the two? Is the 3rd gen worth spending the extra money? Thanks.

    Hi JohnnyV,
This was true, but not anymore, Apple do officially recognise the late 2009 version as 3rd gen.

    From apple.com
"The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318."

  • Ipod Touch 3rd gen 8gb Wont turn On! help

hi guys, I Have a Ipod touch 3rd Gen and A 4th gen. I Was using my 3rd gen  and i put it down and Came back and it Wouldnt turn on. I Assumed the battery was dead so i plugged it into my charger. Nothing Happened. I Plugged it into my Computer and Nothing Happened. Please Help

Your iPod is actually a 2G iPod Touch.  There was never an 8 GB 3G iPod Touch.  As for your issue of it now turning on or responding, see this Apple support document.

  • IPod Nano 3rd gen 8GB does not show music library, can't restore in osx.3.9

I have two problems: Although, I can see mu iPod's music library when I plug in it into my ancient laptop (iBook G4 10.3.9), the library doesn't display on the iPod once it's disconnected, meaning I can't play any songs on the iPod proper). I've done everything that the Apple website recommends for troubleshooting my Nani 3rd generation, including attempting to reset it repeatedly. I've now saved the songs elsewhere, and I'm prepared to restore it, but I can't seem to find a way to reset it in iTunes 4 (apparently the latest version of iTunes that will work on this computer). Am I missing something? What should I do? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Best,
    Diane

    Hey there,
If your iPod is a 3rd generation nano, it will not work with anything below 10.4 as outlined in this Apple support document. That could be the underlying problem. Hope this helped.

  • 3rd gen 8Gb non continually reboots - what to do?

I went to add some songs to my nano and iTunes said there was a firmware update, so I said yes to install it and when the iPod rebooted, it just kept rebooting again and again. The Apple logo shows up and then 5 seconds later the screen goes blank and it boots again. Has been doing it all day. None of the restore things work, probably because it hasn't booted far enough to work with the buttons. Doesn't show up when plugged into USB.
Any ideas as to what to do?

i had the exact same problem with firmware 1.0.2.
had to reset by holding menu & select for about ten seconds, then
pressing play/pause & select for another ten seconds to enter disc mode.
i then reset the nano with itunes and downgraded to firmware 1.0.1 (after deleting the files iPod_26.1.0.2 and iPod_26.1.0.2.ipsw.signature (are in the folder *ipod software updates* somewhere on the harddisk)).
now in works just fine with fw 1.0.1.
fw 1.0.2 obviously contains a bug.

  • Ipod touch will not sync 3rd gen 8gb

I have tried turning off firewall when I click on sync
it says syncing 1 of 1 then finishes without putting new music or new apps on to ipod
I have the latest edition of itunes

Have you successfully synced with the computer before?
Are the proper boxes checked for syncing?
Is the iPod signed into the iTunes account of the items you want to sync?

  • IPod touch 8GB 3rd Gen?

Is there such thing as a 3rd gen 8gb iPod touch? Or is the 8gig only 2nd gen. I'm asking this question because I bought a brand new itouch as a warranty replacement of my broken nano. It's only 2 weeks old and I have noticed that it's the 2nd gen model. Has the shop sold me this mistakenly as they still had a few remaining in their stock? Or is the 8gb only manufacturered as 2nd gens?
    Thanks,
    Madusha
    Message was edited by: Madusha

Hi Madusha: You are correct, the 8Gb is only available in the 2nd Generation. Only the 32 and 64gB are the new and improved 3rd Gen.
    Hope this helps

  • Cant connect 2nd or 3rd gen nano to any system after formatting laptop.

i formatted my laptop at end of the month and since doing this i cant connect my i pod nano 2nd & 3rd gen to anything which means i cant charge either or use either , could anyone please give some advice as to how i could remedy this????...

Do you have a wall charger you could use to charge the iPods with?  Have you tried using a different USB cable or plugging the iPod's into a different PC to see if they are recognized or charged there?  Knowing this information can help determine whether or not it is an issue with the iPods or with your laptop.

  • Disappointed in the 3rd gen lens, not nearly as wide

I've owned the 2nd Vado HD for some time now. The wide angle lens is what made this particular pocket cam very unique. And very usable. The sound quality left a lot to be desired, though.
I just bought the 3rd gen camera and find that the lens is not nearly as wide angle! Why Creative Labs chose to downgrade a KEY FEATURE of their camera totally escapes me. So now they've got a disppointed customer...
So they improved the sound on the 3rd gen, but diminished the lens. I'm now thinking about returning this camera. Creative Labs, are you listening?

After using the camcorder a lot for the past few days, I can now say my opinion of it has changed.
I am completely sastisfied with it, it's a great little camera!

  • I was given a ipod nano i think it's a 3rd gen. i have windows vista and when i plug it in my computer says there are no drivers for it.... help

I was given an older ipod nano, i think it's a 3rd gen 8gb... i have searched the iternet for help and have had no luck. when i connect the ipods to my computer i tells me the usd device is not recognized. i have tried to reset it and it still gives me the samething notice. i have even uninstalled my itunes and updated to the newest itunes available and still no luck. i can not find updats for drivers. i have windows vista.. can anyone help?

Installing the latest version of iTunes should provide the "drivers."
It was definitely working properly for the person who gave it to you?  Is that person a Mac user?
I would try the following.  Shut down (power off) your computer.  Use this procedure to reset the iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
(It's the part that says How to reset an iPod with a Click Wheel.)
Disconnect ALL USB devices and peripherals (including hubs) from computer, except for standared mouse and keyboard.  Start up computer that way.  Run iTunes.  Connect iPod to a USB port that is directly on the computer.

  • Can't update my iPod touch 3rd gen

So I have my 3rd gen iPod touch and i have tried to update it several times with errors telling me that iTunes timed out or with the 3091 error code (i think its the 3091 its the highest error code with 3000) and i have redownloaded itunes rebooted my computer used a different computer and i cant get it to update/ or even restore is there another way to get it to restore? I don't care if all my stuff gets deleted id rather have a fresh start anyway. I am at ios 4.3.5 and wanted to update it up to the new ios 5

You have a 2G iPod.  Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPods.  When the 3G iPods were introduced, the 8GB 2G iPods were continued to be sold with the same updated iOS as the 3G ipods.  It is a common error to think that users purchased a 8GB 3G ipod.  Sorry.

    Hi IIIaass,
Not. My iPod is a 3rd Gen 8GB. I have updated it until the 4.2.1, but my old iTunes (10.2.XXX) always said it was the current version of the iPod.
Now my brother has bought a 4th Gen iPod Touch and he has the 4.3.3. I have downloaded the last iTunes today (10.3.1.55) and it says the same.
I'm trying to restore it right now to see if that change.
