No sound on HP Envy 32 via mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable on Mac mini

I recently bought an HP Envy 32 monitor and hooked it up to my Mac mini using a mini DisplayPort (i.e. Thunderbolt) to DisplayPort cable. The video works fine @ 2560x1440, but I have no sound. The sound output in system preferences mentions "The selected device has no output controls" for the Envy 32. The sound works fine when I use an HDMI cable, but then the resolution is limited to 1080p. The Mac mini is a mid 2011 model, which is capable of transferring audio via DisplayPort, as far aas I know. Any suggestion on how to solve this?

you should try mirroring your screen on the Vizio HDTV
this link will help you how to do this

  • Sound only works with Netflix via Mini DisplayPort

I recently ordered a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter  (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007DNG9DY/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00) for use with my Macbook Pro (purchased in 2011). I followed all of the setup instructions for display and sound (in both system preferences and Audio Midi). It seems that the audio is working only on Netflix. I have tried watching videos on other websites like YouTube and ABC, and there is video but no sound. Sound also works for video files that are on my computer.
Does anyone know why I would not have any sound only on certain websites? Is there a way to fix this?

I had this exact same issue with my mini and a Toshiba 1080p TV.
The reason is pretty technical and involves the EDID signal being lost between TV and Mini. (I think the TV can't re-acquire the signal from the mini)
The only way I found to solve it was to buy one of these:
    http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=4714
    (Gefen DVI Detective)
Once setup it stores the EDID so that the TV always displays the mini's video signal.
It's easy to setup and works fine for me (I've used it connected directly to my TV and through a HDMI switch). Only problem is the price for something that should already work.

When I connect my Mac Mini 2011 with Lion to a TV via HDMI and an earphone cable is plugged in, it´s not possible to choose sound out via hdmi, as opposed to connection via the minidisplay port. Anybody knows how to fix this?

Was just on the phone with Apple about this.
The solution was as follows for me anyway...
    Go to your Finder
    Choose the Go Menu
    Choose Computer
    Choose your Macintosh Hard Drive
    Choose your "Library" Folder
    Choose the "Preferences" Folder
There should be a folder called "Audio"
Move that whole folder to the trash
    Empty the Trash
    Restart from the Apple Menu
    When you are back up and running;
Choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu
         Choose Sound
In the output tab you should now be able to make the HDMI "Sticky"
Enjoy your sound over HDMI and no more dirty knees or broken backs unplugging the desktop speakers!

  • Getting no sound from TV after connecting Macair via mini DP to HDMI port....pls help

I've tried connecting my 2011 Macair to my LED tv via mini DP to HDMI port. The video works fine but there is no sound. I tried opening network preferences and went to the sound section but it does not show my TV to be selected as an output option. Please help!!!!!!

Did you try on another device, like a computer monitor? To verify the problem is not with the adapter or cable.
Off course you switched on the external screen using WinKey+P?

  • HDTV won't  display as mirror or extra display via mini-dvi to HDMI

    Hi
I have a MacBook running 10.5.7 connected to a 1080P-capable Toshishba TV (model 42XV555). I also tried this with 10.5.6 with same results.
They are connected via a "shuttlez" mini-dvi to hdmi dongle and then via a "wegi" hdmi to hmdi cable.
The TV has three HDMI inputs, one designated for computer input via HDMI with a separate input for analogue sound.
THE MB recognizes the TV and displays a separate Toshiba-specific control panel with display control panel is up. It defaults to 1600x90 and 60Hz. The Macbook adjusts every time the tv is connected - there is communication - flashing screen, MB screen re-adjusts.
S-video works fine, via mini-dvi to s-video donglr, then svideo cable.
It has worked twice with the MB and connected with HDMI - just twice. I have spent hour after hour tweaking resolutions, re-booting, changing cables, HDMI ports on the TV etc! When it worked I could mirror and use the screen as a separate, larger display. It worked in clam-shell mode too.
My question is - are there any know problems getting this combination to work (ie MB, mini-dvi to HDMI)? It can work but I am missing some knowledge on the exact combination required.
What are the optimum settings to have this TV display HD from the MB, or come to that any HD 1080p-capable TV??

I'm attempting to connect my MB to a plasma 50 inch Panasonic TV, and am about to purchase the necessary cables from www.monoprice.com.
I've discovered so far that the HDMI connection directly between the MB and the TV (using the appropriate mini DVI adapter of course - product # 4852 at monochrome.com and an Apple HDMI cable which I'll return to get a better price at monochrome) transmits only video/pictures but not audio.
So far, an old, short RCA (red/white) 2-way audio test cable (again using the appropriate adapter to connect to the headphone jack on the MB) does not transmit audio directly to the TV.
    1) Could audio be transmitted from the MB to the TV using a "Coax (RCA) to Optical Toslink Digital Audio Converter" (product ID # 2947 at www.monochrome.com) to connect directly to the TV (in which case, what digital audio cable would I need to connect the converter to the TV)? And if so, would it be stereo or mono?
    OR...
    2) Should I wait until I get my Onkyo surround sound system (later this week) to see if the RCA cable will transmit directly from the MB to the sound system?
    Thanks.

  • MacBook to TV via mini-DVI to HDMI?

I bought these items to connect my macbook to my Sharp Aquos 52" LC52D85U 120Hz 1080p LCD HDTV:
    644 3.5mm Stereo Plug/Plug M/M Cable - 6ft,
    4029 High Speed HDMI 1.3a Category 2 Certified Cable 28AWG - 10ft w/Ferrite Cores (Gold Plated Connectors) - WHITE
    4852 Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter
I have it plugged into input 6, but it doesn't appear to be working. Do I need to adjust the settings? have some type of software? what am I missing here?
    thanks!
update: my background screen from the computer is now on the TV, but not the movie that I am playing.

I just hooked my macbook up to my sony xbr6 tv via mini-dv to hdmi. I had to go into system preferences, then displays. A sony display window appeared, then I went to arrangements, and clicked on mirror displays, and it appeared....I'm still trying to figure out how to get the sound through my tv...I thought I might get sound thru the hdmi cable, but I think I might have to use an rca cable...

You can connect the audio from your iMac to your TV using a mini jack (like headphones plug) to rca (regular red and white audio connectors used on every TV,DVD, etc) cable.
On your TV, you need to be able to set the audio for the HDMI input you will use to "analog" and connect the rca end of the cable to the analog inputs on your TV.

  • IMac 27" (Late 2009): getting audio to HDMI receiver via mini DisplayPort

I just got my first iMac 27" and I'm in the process of integrating it into my home theater system. Here is my setup:
iMac 27" connected to HDMI receiver (Yamaha RX-V1800) via mini DosplayPort, using miniDP-to-HDMI adapter + HDMI cable
Optoma HD20 video projector connected to HDMI receiver (HDMI out) via HDMI cable
I have Windows 7 installed via Bootcamp 3.2, so that I can take advantage of Windows Media Center. With the above setup, I am not getting audio or video signal to my receiver and video projector when I'm using Windows 7. However, when I am in OS X environment, I can get both video and audio signal to my receiver and video projector, and either mirror or extend my video diplay. When I do plug in my iMac straight into my video projector or LCD monitor with built-in speakers while in Windows 7, I get both audio and video output. So why doesn't it work -- and only under Windows 7 -- when the signal goes through the receiver?
My immediate thought was that it must be something about the receiver, but since the setup creates no problem under OS X I don't think it is. Could it perhaps be the Windows driver for mini DisplayPort, because it looks like iMac is not 'recognizing' my receiver and therefore not establishing connection? Is there a driver of fix available that takes care of this problem?
    Thanks!

I've tried a few times and it hasn't worked so far...

USB port on Cinema Display works with the setup.

  • Connecting two 27" iMacs via mini DisplayPort

Juz a thought. Wonder if possible.
Since the 27-incher iMac does video input and output, instead of buying two 30" displays ($1799 each), might as well buy two of these 27" iMacs ($1999 each) and connect them via their mini DisplayPorts. Wonder if it's possible to use one 27-incher for computing and use the other as a second monitor, and switch around whenever it's needed. Kinda cool to have two 27-inchers and Macs on one table top.

There is no reason why that would not work. It would be the same as connecting a MacBook or a Mac mini or a Mac Pro (any Mac with a Mini DisplayPort) that same way to use the 27-inch iMac's big screen as a second display, which is the primary purpose of this feature. It should not matter if the primary Mac happens to be another 27-inch iMac.
And the second iMac would not be "just the display to extend my screen." It is fully operational, so it can be doing tasks in the background. It can be acting as a file or web server, or processing video, or downloading/uploading files. I believe there is a keystroke to toggle the display, and you can probably even control it using +Screen Sharing+ from the other iMac (as long as the two are connected over a network).
What would be really interesting to know, from someone who actually has two of these iMac sitting side-by-side, connected with a Mini DisplayPort cable, is if you can use either iMac as the extended Desktop screen for the other iMac, on-the-fly. So you'd be working on iMac A with iMac B being the second display. Then, you switch to the working on iMac B with iMac A being the second display. And do it with a few keystrokes and no rebooting. Now, that would be cool.

  • Digital audio input via mini jack/toslink from ADA, monitored via USB audio output... is this do-able? I know digital audio input should be okay but how do I monitor it, apart from using the internal speakers?

Digital audio input via mini jack/toslink from ADA converter, monitored via USB audio output to amplifier... is this do-able? I know digital audio input should be okay but how do I monitor it, apart from using the internal speakers?

You can output audio thru HDMI, with appropriate adapter.
You can use additional cheap external usb audio for monitoring.

  • Samsung LA32B530 Not Recognised via Mini Display Port

    Hi,
Tried connecting a Samsung LA32B530 LCD Screen to my MBP. The Screen is not recognised by the system. The screen is connected via the Mini Display Port to DVI adapter and from there via a DVI to HDMI cable. Screen on flickers blue when I plug the screen in but no signal recognised by screen and the screen is not recognised in the control panel.
The MBP is connected to the screen via the HDMI1 port which is said by Samsung to be used with a DVI to HDMI cables.
    Any suggestions?

apple tv showing wire to connect to itunes via mini usb cable which i dont have?

You need to get the cable to restore the ATV to factory settings, following the procedure here.
USB mini cables are available from many different sources; often even from local stores like CVS or Walgreens. They are inexpensive, as little as a few dollars online & around $5 from some local discount stores.

Does iPhone record when sound is manually turned off via the external side switch? Enquiring minds want to know.

Are you asking if the phone logs when someone mutes it? No, I don't believe so. Or, are you asking if audio recording apps still record when the phone is muted? Why don't you use the included VoiceMemo app and test it?
    Best of luck.
