No Sound on HP Envy M6

I have an HP Envy M6 1220tx Windows 8 laptop and for some reason it can no longer play any sound at all. There was never a problem with the sound until the laptop installed automatic updates a couple of days ago. Now it will not make any sound at all, not music, nor system sounds.
Prior to this, if I tapped the mute key on the keyboard an orange light would illuminate on the key and the display would show a loudspeaker icon with a strike through it. Now if I hit the mute button there is no light on the key, and the display merely shows the volume level the computer is currently set to (e.g. 46%), though in actual fact there is no sound at all.
Same deal with the volume icon in the system tray, the mute button will not work, and although I can click and drag the volume slider as far up or down as I like, it makes no difference - there is no sound at all.
I have already tried every fix I have read on the HP forums, I have made sure all the drivers for everything sound are up to date in device manager, I have restarted, restored, downloaded. I can't seem to fix this and I'm starting to get frustrated.
Someone, please help!
James

Hi,
Please try the following method:

It is for Windows 7 but same for Windows 8 & 8.1. Pleae note the way to get to #4 (depending on how your machine is set up). The main point to get to "Troubleshooting" screen as shown (I setup my Windows 8 machine this way: at the top right, select View by small icons):

  • No sound on HP Envy 14 Beats Edition. Sound disappeared for no apparent reason.

HP Envy 14 Beats Edition laptop (product QE295UA#ABA) running Windows 7 Home Premium version 6.1 (build 7601, service pack 1).
I don't recall running any software updates.  I've confirmed that  no mute buttons  are on.   I've tried the Windows troubleshooter for Playing Audio/Speakers and Headphones but the software does not detect any problems.  I've tried reinstalling the driver to no avail.

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp53001-53500/sp53281.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.

  • Speakers sound issue on Envy 14 Beats Edition

    Hi all,
For few days now, my one year Envy 14 has a weird speakers sound issue. When the sound level passes over 50%, there is a lot of scratches and distorsion on the speaker, in that case, it is not usable at all.
Note that this issue does not happen on the jack outputs, with a headset, the sound is perfect, or it is as it also was on the speakers some days ago.
I'm posting here to be able to find the source of the issue. My Envy runs Ubuntu from the beginning, I've just tested with a old Ubuntu LiveCD and the problem is the same, so this is not a Ubuntu or software issue.
Now, my main question is does this come from the speakers themselves? From the audio board? From the main board? How can I diagnose?
    Thanks for your help.

I have the same exact problem with mine. I have a problem with my webcam as well. They are both hardware problems and need to new parts. If I knew where to get them I would have have told you.

    Hi,
    Try the following.
First of all, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load.
Then download the IDT HD Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder,
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp63501-64000/sp63555.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT Audio device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
Next, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link.
    Chipset Driver - Windows 8.1
When the reinstallation has completed, shutdown the notebook by holding down the Left Shift key as you click on Shutdown to temporarily prevent a hybrid boot, then unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.

  • No sound on HP Envy 32 via mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable on Mac mini

I recently bought an HP Envy 32 monitor and hooked it up to my Mac mini using a mini DisplayPort (i.e. Thunderbolt) to DisplayPort cable. The video works fine @ 2560x1440, but I have no sound. The sound output in system preferences mentions "The selected device has no output controls" for the Envy 32. The sound works fine when I use an HDMI cable, but then the resolution is limited to 1080p. The Mac mini is a mid 2011 model, which is capable of transferring audio via DisplayPort, as far aas I know. Any suggestion on how to solve this?

you should try mirroring your screen on the Vizio HDTV

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Open windows Control Panel, open Windows Update, select 'View update history' in the left hand pane and then select 'Installed updates' link in the following window.
Locate update KB2962407, right click it and select Uninstall.  When done, restart the notebook, open windows Control Panel, open Windows Update and select 'Check for updates'.  You'll see the update you just uninstalled being offered again - right click and select 'Hide Update'.

  • Suddenly no sound on hp envy 14

I was playing music and out of the blue it stopped. I thought maybe itunes was having a problem, so I tried youtube and had no luck. I updated my computer, checked that the sound was up, and restarted it but nothing worked. Can anyone help?

Just to note, this is a user to user community and not a direct communication with HP.
What is the product number? See the link below for details on where to find this information.

It appears this is a recent development. Have you tried a Microsoft System Restore to return to a date when it was working?
Is the sound card listed in device manager? If so, what is the status message?

  • No sound! HP Envy m6 Notebook PC

    Hello,
Ever since my laptop updated itself to Windows 8.1 from 8, the sound no longer works.
I've been trying loads of methods online to try and get it back to work but nothing seems to help.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Try this:
In the device manager locate the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC under sound, game and video controller.
    Right click and select uninstall.
Restart your computer and open up the device manager again.
In the same spot under sound, game and video controller where the IDT CODEC used to be listed there will be something else listed.
Right click on that and select "scan for hardware changes" this will reinstall the IDT CODEC but I believe it is the updated driver which is actually compatible.
It has been working for me so far, but I will keep you updated if it fails again. For now  I would try that!! good luck

  • No sound on HP Envy X2 under Windows 8.1

Sound worked previously on this machine but currently unavailable.
Contradictions on status of audio devices depending where I look.
Within Device Manager, under "sound, video and game controllers" there is an entry "Realtek I2S Audio Codec".  This device is enabled and is showing as working properly.  I have tried updating device drivers - drivers are up to date.
When I select "Settings" - audio (speaker) icon is showing as "disabled".
Under "Control Panel/Manage Audio Devices/Playback Tab" status is "No audio devices are installed".
When trying to adjust "System Volume" status is again "No audio devices are installed"
As far as I'm aware there have not been any hardware changes.  Can anyone suggest what I should check or change?

    RalphC97,
Yeah! Not sure if your pc is still under warrently, however, if it is send it back to customer care. I just got a call from my case manager and he indicates the NEW ,x2-k010nr, has a hardware defect. Not sure what it is ,however, I think that the external audio combo jack was not connected properly. So hope to have it back soon. I plan to use the laptop for my ham radio work and need audio to work properly.

This issue has been previously reported and noted as solved, but it is not solved. See the link to the other post below.
Ways in which I attempted to address this myself...
I first re-installed all drivers and updates, including BIOS updates. After that didn't fix the problem, I did a full wipe/re-install of windows 8, and again, updated all drivers from the HP website. This issue happens on both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I then did an exchange, and even the new exchange ultrabook is experiencing this issue. HP technicians, there is something faulty with this device. Please acknowledge and address ASAP.

  • Fix for Envy TouchSmart 15-j078ca (or any other laptop) sound not working

If you are having problems with the sound on your Envy 15 laptop (speaker/headphone jack not working), there is a straightforward way to fix your problems.
First go through these simple steps (they could very well save you some time if they work):
    1) Update your drivers! Seriously, this is one of the top fixes for problems on PCs. If you haven't updated your drivers, search for "Check for Updates" and click that result (you can search using the Charm; the result will be under settings). If you have, read on.
    2) Check to see if your audio device is enabled. On your desktop, right-click the Speakers icon and go to Playback devices. Set audio devices to default (like headsets and speakers) on by rightclicking them and selecting "Set as default". This way, they will work when plugged in, and when taken out, the system will default to other available sound sources.
If your chosen device is not present, right click in the open space and check "Show Disabled Devices". Now, you can rightclick a device and Enable it, then going through the same process as above to set them as default.
    3) If your devices are enabled and plugged in, try the Windows Troubleshooter. Press the Windows key to bring up the Windows 8 interface (or the Start Menu in Win7) and type "Troubleshooting". Select it from the Settings section on the right side, then go to "Troubleshoot audio playback" under Hardware and Sound. Run the troubleshooter
If none of these methods work, follow the instructions in this excellent post, but use the changes below:
    1) Use the audio driver specifically for this laptop model (or the driver that works for your model. Enter your product name under Drivers and Downloads on this page if you are American, or this page if you are Canadian. The driver will be under Audio).
    2) Remove both the AC adapter and  the battery before performing the hard reset, then hold down only the power button for 15 seconds (or follow the instructions here if the battery is fixed in place).
    3) Press Escape repeatedly on boot-up until you get the option to use the BIOS menu.
Hopefully this helps, I know it helped me! Remember to give Kudos to the post linked if it helped you.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome.Thank you for the detailed information very very helpful. I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j078ca  Notebook and the popping sound or crackling noises.
Here is a document on troubleshooting sound.
Please make sure your updates have been done on the Notebook. In the device manager under sound right click and update the driver. Here is another step to try.
    1. Right click the Speaker icon in the bottom right corner by your time.
    2. Click Playback Devices.
    3. Click Speakers/Headphones.
    4. Click Properties.
    5. Click the Advanced tab on the Properties window.
    6. Change the Default Format drop-down to the highest quality.
    7. Apply the properties.
    8. Click OK to close the properties window.
