No Sound on iMovie project

So it has happened again! This time on part 2 nearly finished - why does it always happen to the end after 3 weeks work?! (see my cry for help 2 Sept 2013).
I am working on a project with video clips, still photos, music and voicecovers. It is almost finished and today the iMovie suddenly closed down - happens too often. When I logged in again there is no sound on either music or some voicecovers, some voicecovers work. But if i change anything, like making a new voicecover, there is no sound.
I have made a duplicate but it carries along the fault whatever it is.
What can I do to get the sound back? The last time I could more or less pinpoint the section, took out the videoclips, restarted. When putting back the video clips and adding a soundtrack it worked fine.
But this time I cannot pinpoint a section.
It is so infuriating after all that work and time spent on this project.
Is there anyone who can help me with this problem? And I am not a computer wizard!
Thanks very much.
THL

There may be two causes: 1) It isn't really a QT movie, but an MPEG-1. 2) You have checked the video play through camera checkbox in iMovie's prefs.

  • My iMovie project has no sound, can I fix this?

My son created an iMovie project today and the sound was working like it should. When I got home, he tried to play the movie but there was no sound. I still heard sounds when I increased the computer volume up and down. I went to the "Media" section in iMovie and selected a song and clicked "Play", but NO sound. I then went into the project using finder (Show package contents) and found the .mov file and played it with Quicktime. The sound was working fine. Logged him out and back, no sound. Restarted the mac, still no sound. Exported the movie (Shared) and played it, sound was working fine.
Are there any cache or preferences that I can remove that might correct this problem. I've seen this problem in the past, but not recently until now.
We are running iMovie HD on a G5 PPC running Tiger.
    Hope someone can help.
    Thanks

    Hi
My Suggestions (List) - 3a most probably the culprit.
    *No Audio in iMovie*
Most common origin is use of audio from iTunes.
    Work around -
    • in iTunes - Select needed audio into one new playlist
    • Copy/Burn this as an Audio-CD .aiff (not .mp3)
    • Use this CD and it's files in the movieproject
    Other origins are
    1. strange/ailient file formats as -
    • .mp3, .avi, .wmv etc
    • Convert them into .aiff 48kHz 16-bit and use this
    2. the Mac is set wrongly in regard of midi -
    • Close iMovie and other programs
    • Start GarageBand
    • Make a new GarageBand-project and play some notes
    • Close GarageBand and Save
    • Now try iMovie again
*3. No audio when playback in iMovie 1 to HD 6.*
    a. in iMovie pref - deselect ”Playback via Camera”
    b. in System preferences - see that Audio out is not set to zero. Mine often does this
    without me knowing why.
    4. iMovie’08 & 09 & 11

Try double tapping the movie clip itself when inserted in the timeline and ensure that sound is on on the actual clip on the movie time line.

  • How to move an uncompleted iMovie project from one hard drive to another?

I want to move an uncompleted iMovie project form one hard drive to another. What do I move to make sure that all of parts of the project: movies, photos, sound, are moved?
    Thanks, Bruce

    Hi,
You can deploy the ADF Project as an ADF Library Jar file and reuse the taskflow from that jar file in another BPM Application.

  • Importing clips from iMovie project (they keep ending up in the trash)

I have never tried to import other clips from another iMovie project before and I just tried it yesterday. This is what I did:
-I went into the other project and clicked on each individual clip from that project that I wanted (one at a time).
-I copied that clip and then saved it to the desktop
-From there I copied those clips to my external drive (which holds the new project that I am working on
-I then opened up the new project in iMovie
    -I went to File<Import
-I selected the clips that I had copied over to the external drive
    -I imported them
-They all showed up fine, they played fine and I was able to edit them and put them into the time line as well
The problem I face though is after I save the project and exit, the next time I open the project, each of those clips are missing and have been placed in the trash
    What am I doing wrong?
Thanks ahead of time for your help!

It sounds like something may be preventing iMovie from properly saving the project on the external drive. The drive format may be wrong, or third-party software might be causing conflicts. More here:

Another possibility is that you are opening the wrong project file saved inside the iMovie 5 project. If your project was originally an iMovie 4 project converted to iMovie 5 that's an easy mistake to make. More here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1971832
Note that the copy/export/import routine you used can be simplified enormously. iMovie 5 lets us Copy and Paste clips much more simply. To copy clips from Project A to Project B, open Project A, select all the clips you want copied to Project B, choose Edit > Copy, open Project B, move the playhead where you want to place the clips, and Paste. iMovie will import all the files that support those clips from Project A to Project B. Note that it imports the entire file for the clip, not just the clip itself. That's so the clip inherits all the non-destructive editing features it had in Project A.
To avoid Project B becoming unnecessarily large, it's important to Copy and Paste all the clips you want together. If you copy two clips at the same time that share the same file iMovie imports their source file just one time. But if you Copy and Paste two clips that share the same source file separately, iMovie imports the same file twice.

  • How to move iMovie project from one computer to another

I have been working on an iMovie 09 project on my desktop at home.
Now I want to work on the same project on my computer at work.
How can I move the project from one computer to another?   What I've already tried was to make a duplicate copy of the project and then use a thumb drive to move that to another computer.   It didn't work.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello James Snedeker,
After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to move a file to another disk. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
iMovie: How to Save Projects to Another Hard Disk
To copy an iMovie project to another disk:
    1. Quit iMovie if it is open.
    2. Locate the project folder in the Finder.
    3. Drag the project folder to the other disk.
Note: You must move the complete project folder, intact, to the other disk in order to successfully copy the project. The project folder has the same name as the project listed in the iMovie window. This folder includes the iMovie project file, as well as a Media folder, which contains all of the clips associated with this project. If you don't copy all of these items, the project may no longer be readable in iMovie.
Once you have copied the project, try opening it in iMovie to ensure that it copied to the other disk successfully.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • How can I edit a mp3 file and drop it in an iMovie project?

I wish to edit an mp3 music file so that I can drop a piece of it into an iMovie project. iMovie's audio tools are very rudimentary---one can reposition a music file, shorten it, etc but cannot pick a piece of it to complement a movie segment.
So I dropped the mp3 file into GarageBand. I deleted the first section of the song, then selected the 16 second piece I wanted to include in my iMovie, using the copy command. Then I pasted the piece into a new GarageBand project screen. The piece wouldn't play, and when I selected "export" the piece neatly went to where I wanted it, but again with no sound.
So simply: how do I edit an mp3 file (cutting a piece of it) and then save it so I can apply it to an iMovie? Help!

it should have played, but you can do it easier by exporting just the section you want:

  • Why is it when I add photos from iPhoto onto an iMovie project, it is not displayed when I play the movie from beginning to end, although I can see it in the (edit) format?

    Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering why is it that when I place an image from iPhoto to an iMovie project, it is not displayed when I play it from beginning to end in fullscreen playback mode? However, when I exit it on the timeline, it is shown. All I did as drag it from the iPhoto column and place on at the beginning. I would really appreciate someones help because I really need to be able to place images onto my projects. Thanks!

  • Can an iMovie project be restored once it's missing?

I've seen a bunch of discussions along these lines, but sadly no solid answers.
I have an iMovie project that I've put probably 35 hours into. A very complicated piece with clips, music, pictures, lots of stuff. I had experienced a few recent iMovie crashes, but the project was always still there upon restarting.
But then last night when I quit the application - simply by command-Q'ing - when I started it up again the project was no longer in my project library. I can see the file in my iMovie Projects folder, but double clicking on it does not open it. The file size also seems too small compared to other iMovie project files, but its modification date seems accurate.
I've deleted my iMovie preferences file as referenced in other similar questions. This didn't help. I have not updated to the new OS or updated iMovie yet; I was actually waiting until my big project was finished just in case iMovie would lose any audio files, etc., in the transition.
I've restarted, shut down, copied and renamed the file, tried to open the file on a different iMac - all with failed results. I was not running Time Machine. I'm starting to accept the inevitable, but it's pretty frustrating when you can see the file there, exactly where it's supposed to be, but it refuses to work.
If anyone can suggest how to restore or otherwise find/fix this file, I'd love to hear it.
    Thanks.

Use Share to QuickTime. Set the format to Sound to AIFF. Take it to iTunes. If you have iTunes set to import using MP3 you can use the Advanced menu to convert the AIFF to MP3.

  • How do I migrate iMovie project data/pointers from iPhoto to Aperture?

This may be a rather tricky question but here is what I want to do. I have 22GB of Photo's/Video's in iPhoto that I originally used at some point in the past to create some travel home movies. I currently have about 44GB of Photo's/Vid in Aperture. I like Aperture so much that I never use iPhoto anymore.
I've started moving just the albums with pictures in iPhoto over to Aperture. (simple enough) But now I have a lot of space I need to free up.
My question is possibly broken down into 2 parts.
    1) How do I move albums with photo's & video to Aperture and index them accordingly without affecting the iMovie projects that link to the original iPhoto data?
I want to keep my iMovie projects the way they are, in editable form, thus eliminating the need for iPhoto, so I can clean up 22GB.
    2) In iMovie, on the left window pane, it says "iPhoto Library" & "Aperture Library", with all the old iMovie projects pointing to the iPhoto library. Would moving the rest of my iPhoto library into Aperture automatically purge iMovie editable video projects?
I've backed everything up onto an external hdd, so I would sincerely appreciate any help on this topic. It sounds complicated, but I think it should be fairly straightforward. However, I thought I'd ask the community before actually attempting to do so.
Again, appreciate your help folks. Thanks.

Thanks for your suggestions, However I tried to do a simple test on one very short iMovie project and this is what has occurred:
Setup: (iPhoto '11, iMovie '11, Aperture 3.1.1 - All up to date)
to understand what's going on, prior to what I did below this is how my projects are setup, iPhoto has an event & album tagged F1 Montreal Weekend '08 with both photo / video. (my test project for the purposes of trying to get this to work) iMovie has a project I created based on that photo video and it's saved as an iMovie project called 'F1 Montreal' with references to the iPhoto database.
    Action:
First, in Aperture, I imported the whole iPhoto event above which brought over all 192 photos and about 36 videos. I then filed it in aperture under my new way of storing albums/videos and created a smart album for video within the Aperture project. Once I verified all the data is there, I then trashed the iPhoto event and album mentioned above to free up some space since it's now in Aperture. Finally, i closed both iPhoto & Aperture and loaded up iMovie.
    Results:
The project 'F1 Montreal' shows up as normal, with all its edits and such after clicking edit project. However, there is a little yellow exclamation mark that says this on every slice of video:
"This clips media file is not currently available.
    /users/{me}/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/2008/F1 Montreal/{moviehere}.mov"
After some research on what this is and how to fix it, it seems there's no menu option to repoint the movie files to a different location, am I missing something or have I moved / merged these files the wrong way? Apparently there is some help in the iMovie help file that shows how to reconnect data, but I can't find it anywhere.
I would really appreciate any additional help on how to do this. I'm sure someone's tried doing this before, yes?
    Thanks!

  • Loading a song to IMovie project twice

I have started a IMovie project and placed a particular song from ITunes at or near the commencment of the first clip. I now want to place the same song at a different starting place further on into the project. The field " Place at Playhead" is not "light" , but if I select a different song, all is well. How do I use the same song more than once. ???
    Help

    Hi John
Easiest way is. In Sound TimeLine view click on the sound file and keep button
down. Now also press alt-key drag to a new place in timeline. Release.
    OK ?
Zoom in in TimeLine and fine adjust Your new sound copy.

  • Can I play my iMovie project on my hdtv via an HDMI cable and adapter?

Greetings. Wondering if I can play my iMovie project directly from my MacBook Pro to my hdtv via an hdmi cable with adapter for the MacBook? Thank you!

    Hi Paul,
The sound was coming out of the laptop and not out of the tv though
Connect an audio cable from your Mac's audio out socket to the TV's audio in socket. Adapter cables often need audio to be connected separately. I had a similar problem connecting the mini display port to DVI cable, then DVI to HDMI adapter from there.

  • No audio with copied imovie project

I copied my imovie project from my time machine backup to another my mac mini. I put it in the imovie projects folder and I can open it up in imovie, but the audio isn't playing. It seems to be there. I can see the green area around my video and see the names of the songs, but I can't hear anything. The volume is on. I can play songs from itunes.

I'm trying to help a teacher with an iMovie '08 problem and this seems to match the problem we are experiencing, but I don't understand how to implement the answer given. (I'm a newbie to iMovie '08 so please forgive the basic nature of this question).
This user's iMovie project is in /Users/kate/Movie/iMovie Projects.localized/Blah Project
The audio clips are showing (and some have two layered audio clips: narration and background music).
One of the audio clips does play, but I can't see any settings difference between the ones that don't play and the one that plays. I'm assuming it is because the audio files are missing (as the answer was above). But where do I find out what relative path the project is expecting? And how might I find the missing sound files? (I have no idea how this project was created or where the user might be storing things in a non-standard way).
Basically, I need more detailed instructions on how to get the filenames of the clips and the relative paths so I can copy the correct things where the need to go (if this is indeed my particular problem).
    Thanks for any assistance!
