No Sound on Imported Clips

I often copy video clips from the internet using Quicktime. The downloaded Clips play fine using QT Player or Preview, but when I drag the clips to IMovie to edit them for burning to a disk, there is no sound. The video plays fine in IMovie, but there is no sound. Any suggestion on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

QuickTimeKirk I wonder if you can help. I had the same problem with no sound so I used MPEG Streamclip to convert my MPEG file. The problem is that now that I have sound, when I import my new .mov file into iMovie to edit it the movie is now distorted like super panoramic effect. They play OK however in QT with no problem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • IMovie11 no sound on imported clips

I have a Sony HDR SR11 and I have imported hundreds of videos without issues.
But now after upgrading my software to iMovie11 (9.0.4) all my imported clips have no sound.
I have seen similiar issues here but I haven't found any real solution for this.
    I would appreciate any help.

    Hi Carroq
I have had exactly the same problem since paying to upgarde to iMovie 11 (9.06) It is so frustrating becuase I delete my video from my Sony camera which I have been using with the iMac for more than two years without any problems.
Apple should sort this out pronto and let people know how to retrieve the sound.

  • Premiere elements 13 sound of import clip gone after importing?

The sound of the clips I load into premiere elements (13) is all of a sudden gone. For all the clips I uploaded earlier I had no problem. Is there maybe a setting I changed without knowing?

    Camilio
On what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 13 running on?
What are the properties of these clips that you are importing - what is the difference between the earlier imported clips and these latest one?
Same camera, same settings, same everything?
Do you have the problem if you start a new project?
Let us start here. More questions later depending on your reply.
    Thank you.

I am having trouble getting sound when importing video clips into Premiere Elements 10.  Is someone able to offer me a solution as I have no idea what I have done to cause this to happen.
The clip has sound when opened with windows media player.

    Hi Steve,
After reading everybody’s responses I am feeling a little out of my depth.  Being new to this I am having difficulty in understanding a lot of the information given to me and also in the information you require from me.  It appears that one thing I should never do is mix film from two different cameras.  I would really like to fix this one particular clip though as it holds an interview that was taken when leaving Coober Pedy and something that I don’t want to lose.
I have today done some research on the camera that took the offending video clip.   It was a Samsung S85 and according to the Samsung website it uses MJPEG video format.
Here are the specifications as per the Samsung website.

I downloaded and installed Media Info and Morgan Multimedia MJPEG Codec V3.99.108 today.  Do I have to register it to get it to operate?  I read the documentation file that came with it hoping to find a clue as what I should do but I could not comprehend the information it contained.
Thank you and other members who have responded to my plea for all the help you have given me.

  • Importing clips from iMovie HD to FCE4

Hi. Have read with interest a couple of questions on this same issue, with the advice from Tom Wolsky seemingly being to not mix the two applications and just get stuck in with FCE. However, i'm finding FCE difficult to like/get to grips with. But more importantly, after attending some Apple onetoone sessions, it seems my Canon camcorder might be a little long in the tooth and there may be some tape slippage as I was getting time code errors when trying to import directly to FCE. The fix seemed to be to capture the footage via iMovie and import to FCE using 'show package contents' route. Having now though imported some footage from a second tape, I have some of the clips showing as Offline for some reason. Is the trick to import clips from IMovie as per Tom's suggested route on 9/8/08?

I import video from my camera into iMovie 4, because that is the last version of iMovie, I believe, that was capable of flushing unwanted video off the hard drive, and I can bring an entire tape into iMovie, trim it down for FCE, and then get rid of the unwanted footage. iMovie 6, like Final Cut Express, is a nondestructive editor and can't erase unwanted footage from the hard drive, and as you know, video uses up hard drive space FAST. To get rid of discarded edits, you either have to use iMovie 4 or Final Cut Pro.
iMovie is also much easier to import video into than Final Cut Express, with all the latter's complicated controls. With iMovie, you just plug in your camera, iMovie then says "Camera Connected," and you hit Play and Import. Stone simple. Also, in iMovie you can hear the audio as it comes in, and if I remember right (it's been a while since I did it in FCE), you can't hear your audio tracks as your video imports into FCE. Not a big deal, but an annoyance.
Once the video is in iMovie, then I cut and trim the video to get rid of all substandard/unwanted stuff, and then Empty Trash, which erases the unwanted video off the hard drive, saving mucho space over the course of a project. Otherwise, you're just stuck with the unwanted video, and all it does is fill up your hard drive. Then you export (or "Share," in iMovie parlance) your video from iMove as a QuickTime movie, and drop that QT movie into Final Cut Express's Browser. Then create your FCE project from it.
The only objection I have ever seen to this procedure is people complaining that their QuickTime movie from iMovie has to be rendered in FCE before FCE can use it, and this takes a bit of extra time. Well, that's true, unless you export your video from iMovie in a form that FCE can use natively. Then it doesn't need to be rendered at all--it's just as though you had imported it from the camera directly into FCE. Most people don't know how to set up iMovie to do that.
Here's how I do it: (this is iMovie 4; I assume other versions are the same), Select Share > QuickTime and choose Expert Settings. On the next screen, select Export: Movie to QuickTime Movie, and click the Options button. In the Movie Settings window that this brings up, on the upper (video) part of it, under the Video checkbox, click the Settings button there, and for Compression Type choose DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, and under Compressor Quality, move the slider to Best, and click OK. Under the Sound checkbox, click Settings, and then choose Linear PCM, Stereo, and 48.000 kHz for Sound Settings. Under Render Settings, choose Qualty: Best. Just below that, uncheck the "Prepare for Internet Streaming" box. Then click OK, and the window will go away, and you're ready to export.
Give the video a name, and a place to save to, then click SAVE. The QuickTime movie that results from this can be dropped straight into FCE and requires no rendering; it works just as though you had imported it directly into FCE from your camera.

  • No sound during import from camcorder

When I am importing video from a DV tape in a camcorder I don't hear any sound. After the clip is captured, you can hear the sound during playback. Is there a setting that allows you to hear the sound during import? I have tried importing HDV format from a camcorder and regular DV from a tape deck with the same results.

iMovie does not play sound on import. This makes sense if you consider that most current camcorders do not import in real time. They are faster or slower than real time depending on the speed of the Mac.
See if your camera has a speaker. You can listen from the camcorder.

  • No audio on import clips

Using iMovie 6.0.3 on my new Power Mac. Importing via firewire from Canon ZR500. No audio when I play imported clips. I can see audio wave after extracting. Speakers turned on. I can hear the audio sound affects and iTunes songs from the iMovie browser, but they don't play once placed in timeline.
    What is up??
Using same camera I have no problem on my iBook G4

I think it is called " Video Play Through Camera ", Karsten.
    Language barrier, I think.
    no, it's called...
"Video eines DV-Projekts auf DV-Kamera anzeigen"
    .. to be korrekt...
thanks, Sue, for correction.. indeed, I toggle between English and German interface, just to post here the correct terms.. I was sure, I remember right.. nope.. where are my pills...? the red ones.. are for the brain...

  • I can't view video on imported clips on FCPX, it shows blue instead of image

I can't view video on my imported clips on FCPX, it shows blue instead of image on the clip. I can hear sound but no video. What is the problem. I wish someone can help me on this issue? Thanks.

The camera is Sony Handycam HDR-CX550. I used the internal hard disc to record. I can's use MTS clips if it is recorded on the internal hard disc. I converted clips into MOV, MP4, and Final Cut formats, non of them worked on Final Cut Pro X. I tried to import the same clips on iMovie, it worked but super slow. MOV and MP4 formats used to work for FCPX, the only difference is I recorded the footage with HD 1920x1080.
The clip I imported showed as a blue thing with two rectagle shapes on it. I can hear the sound, but no video. I also imported my old clips with sam format, it worked. I tried a lot of things, no use.
By the way, what is spwecs?

  • Trying to Import Clips from Camcorder; iMovie Plays Completed Movie Instead

I know this sounds strange, but when I try to import clips from my mini DV camcorder, I hear the sound the CD/DVD player makes when my laptop starts up, and then iMovie 08 proceeds to play a movie that I completed 6 months ago, haven't opened and played since then, but does not import the clip playing on my camcorder! Anyone have an idea of what is happening? Again, almost every time I press the "camera" icon to bring up the viewer to see the clip playing on the camcorder, the CD player makes a sound, and then instead of seeing the clip from the camcorder, I see a completed iMovie/iDVD project. In addition, the particular movie that plays is not in my project library, nor is it in my event library? What do I do? Trash a preference file? Thank you.

  • RT playback on imported clips

I'm new to FCP, I've been reading up on various basic differences between how Final Cut and Avid handle imported clips. I know that FCP doesn't recreate media for imported clips, simply references wherever they lay. I know that the imported clips need to have the same settings as the sequence you add them to, otherwise it needs to be rendered. (Side note: Is there a way to conform all clips to be the same format? I will be using lots of QTs and they won't all be the same format. Seems a pain to have to work outside the app to get them to import and play nicely inside the app.)
I can play the clips just fine in the Viewer, can't get them to play in the Canvas. I've made sure the frame size, compression, pixels (square), frame rate are the same. The only difference is the audio rate - the QT has audio at 22 KHz and I can't find that as an option in the Sequence settings. Could that be why I get a red bar requiring rendering in the Canvas/Timeline? I tried turning off audio, but I still have the red bar. It's driving me mad!
I've read through the manual, the help and a reference book but all I get is "they need to have the same settings and then the clip will play in the sequence." There must be a setting someplace I haven't read about.
    Thanks!

What am I doing wrong? I'm working off internal storage and 1 firewire drive. I've tried moving the clips off the internal over to the firewire storage before importing, and I've tried keeping them on the internal. All this talk of RT playback on FCP with various formats is great, but I can't get 1 stream of imported material to play back at all.
You need to share much more about the clip(s) in question. What codec? frame size?
Certain formats - especially what we call delivery formats (Sorenson Video 3, H.264, MPEG-4) - will not play in realtime on many systems, due in part to lack of horsepower from the playback machine (your computer) and/or bandwidth from the storage device (your hard drive or disks). There are other codecs that fall into this category (non-real time playback) but since your audio is 22 kHz, it sounds like heavily compressed, delivery codec files are what you're working with.
FCP 6's Mixed Format Timeline can require substantial horsepower and bandwidth, depending on the codecs/frame sizes involved, so one trick might be to lower the setting for Playback Quality and Frame Rate in the RT settings in your Timeline.

  • Gaps in audio when importing clips?

When I try to import clips from my camcorder to imovie, quite often it happens there are little gaps with no sound (easy to hear, and visible in audio wave as gaps as well).
When I connect the camcorder to the TV set, then the sound is fine, thus assume it cannot be a mistake in recording.
I've also exchanged the firewire cord, still the problem continues...
Would be extremely grateful for any help...

    Hello BCRC,
What make / model computer are you using?
    What operating system?
What program are you using to burn the DVD's and CDs?
By gaps are you meaning that there is a gap from one track to the next and you are looking to burn gapless discs, or are you referring to the audio actually skipping parts of the audio when burning?

  • No sounds when importing Quick Time

I received a clip from someone and am able to open it and it p[ays fine, However, when I import it to FCP Express, The video p[ays nut there is no sound. The clip has a mpg extension.

MPEG video files are muxed (multiplexed). You'll need to demux and convert the MPEG file into an editable format that will match your FCE Sequence settings. MPEG Streamclip should be able to do this for you.

  • Incorporating external sound within a clip without re-encoding

I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than me can save me a bit of time. If Premiere is not capable of doing certain things (see below) then I won't have to vainly search through the manual to find how to do them.
    1. Can Premiere automatically align a sound clip that was taken with an external recorder, to the sound already inside an AVCHD clip? A TV cameraman I was talking to recently said that FCP can do it. For a particular clip, he just highlights a series of sound files (if I understood him correctly) and FCP chooses the right one and aligns it to the existing sound.
    2. Can I import a clip in AVCHD format (taken on a GH2), remove the existing sound track and replace it with another (for example, as above), and save again as AVCHD, without the video part being re-encoded? What I want to do is store the externally recorded sound files within the clip instead of having them as separate files. Simplify my archives.
I don't need instructions how to do the above, I just want to know if it is possible, and what technical terms to look for in the manual.

Thanks for the responses, but I'm still not clear about what is and is not possible. I've got the full Adobe suite, so if any of the software included in the suite can automatically sync sound, please let me know.
    1. Jim Simon responded that it might be possible to sync sound if both clips have identical timecode. Well, my recorded sound does not have timecodes, so does that preclude Premiere from automatically syncing external sound to internal AVCHD sound?
    2. Dave Merchant suggests third-party software for (2), the demuxing/remuxing. That's sort of okay, but I'd rather stick with Premiere (if possible) or FCPX (if I have to). So, does Dave's answer mean that Premiere is not able to replace sound inside an AVCHD clip without re-encoding the video when saved?
    3. Jim Curtis suggested PluralEyes. Looks good for automatic syncing. But it means another piece of software, and for $100 extra I can buy FCPX. He also says that FCPX has this function built in (I assume he means auto sound syncing).
I'm left with this (correct me if I'm wrong):
A: FCPX and PluralEyes can automatically align sound files. Premiere cannot.
B: FCPX and Premiere cannot, without re-encoding when saved, align and replace the audio in an AVCHD clip. For that I need other software.

  • Importing clips from iMovie - jittery

Just got Final Cut Pro 5 and I'm having a problem with importing clips from iMovie into FCP5. The clips were fine in iMovie, but the images are jittery in FCP. I tried Apple Care, but they wanted to charge me $200 to answer my question eventhough I just bought the software yesterday!
any ideas most welcome - thanks

Nowhere is it advertised that iMovie is compatible with FCP.
One is a consumer format, with less features, like lack of timecode. The other is a professional format, which relies heavily on timecode.
Yes, output to tape from imovie, then capture with FCP.
#20 Using iMovie to Capture for FCP edit
    Shane's Stock Answer #20:
iMovie handles the media differently from FCP, specifically where audio is concerned. So it is not a recommended workflow. Here's why...
iMovie captures using DV Stream (.dv) standard which does not use timecode. That is a big disadvantage over the way that FCP captures in that you can't go back and recapture the material at a later date if you need to revisit a project.
The DV/NTSC specification (the one FCP uses) also calls for seperate tracks for audio and video, even if you capture it as one clip. iMovie' DV stream format is muxed audio and video, which means that they are tied together (I can't get into specifics because I ain't no engineer or programmer). FCP is a bit more demanding and captures the seperate audio/video tracks, either in a single media file or as seperate video and audio files. With FCP you could capture video only or audio only because each is defined by the DV specs. while with iMovie you can't.
Also, if you drop the iMovie footage into the timeline, your will get the RED render bar forcing you to render the footage in order to see it...

  • Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion. Help??

Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion.
I was working on a project, when all of a sudden the event library went blank.  There are no devices showing in the left column, only "last import" and "aperture videos".  There are no video clips in the editing window.  I have "Show: All Clips" selected.  I've tried "group events by disk".
When I have a Project open, it plays just fine.  There are no yellow triangles saying "source clip is missing".  Yet, again...nothing is in the event library large editing window.  So, it seems the data is still there, but invisible.  This is true with all the projects, and all the external devices I've experimented by plugging in to see if their video clips show up in the event library.
I have tried to import new movies, and iMovie responds as normal...looking like it's importing, then "generating thumbnails", then it makes the "ding" signalling that the import is complete...but nothing shows in the event library.  I've tried importing movies from the harddrive, from quicktime, and from an external drive.
I have searched the forums, and found many users with a similar, but not the same, problem.  For them, it seems the "go to users-library-preferences and delete iMovie plist" has solved their problem.  This didn't work for me.
I uninstalled/reinstalled iMovie, I even have re-installed Mountain Lion (from a last-ditch effort suggestion from Apple technician).
HERE'S AN INTERESTING DETAIL:  After almost 5 hours on the phone with Apple, I decided to cut my losses and take my project to another Mac I have.  I'm working on a project, for work, that is critical that it's completed by tonight (whoops), and all my video is on an external drive.  So, I plug in the external drive to Mac #2, open iMovie, and everything is looking fine.  I continue importing some files I was converting, through Wondershare, and suddenly (whether or not this has to do with the importing, I'm not sure), the SAME THING happened to Mac #2!!!!  I can't believe this.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Have you ever heard of this happening?  Could it have to do with the files I'm importing???
I apologize if my language is confusing.  Obviously, I'm not an Apple genius-person!  I hope I've provided all the information you need.
    Mac #1 is a 27" desktop, mid-2012, software up-to-date.  Mac #2 is a 24" desktop, about 4 years old, OSX 10.7.5

    I'm adding more information:
in Finder, my iMovie folders are all visible and accessible.  When I click on a clip from iMovie Events folder, Quicktime opens and plays the clip.  ALL my video is not missing - it just isn't showing up in the Event Library!
This happened all of a sudden, while I was working on iMovie project (on both computers).
All my Projects are intact, and play when I open them.
