No sound on MPEG movies

I recently purchased the MPEG2 Updater and assumed that having it would allow me to view some MPEG's that people had sent me. Well, they open to a beautiful picture, but they have absolutely no sound. I have to convert them using MPEG Streamclip, but I lose an incredible amount of video quality when I do that. Even the old reliable vlc player will not play sound with these MPEG's. I am running Tiger and have QuickTime Pro 7.0.2.
My friends with PC's seem to have no trouble playing these and get incredibly clear video and perfect audio. Isn't MAC supposed to be good at this????? Why are we left out of this loop??
What do I do to maintain good video and get good audio as well? Please help!!

QuickTime Pro (and iTunes) doesn't export audio from muxed formats (MPEG 1 or 2 and Flash).

  • Trouble opening mpeg movie files and importing into iMovie 08

Hi, I'd be most grateful if anyone could provide any solutions to the following problem...
A friend has emailed me two .mpeg movie files which are parts 1&2 of a home movie which I want to edit in iMovie and burn to DVD. The footage was shot on a miniHDV camcorder (not sure which brand).
Opening in QT 7.6 gives the following warning dialogue: "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file."
The files will however play fine in VLC Media Player, but not in mpeg Streamclip (the file appears to play but the viewer is blank with no audio/video). Trying to import into iMovie is unsuccessful. The iMovie browser won't let me choose the files or drag/drop.
Any ideas. I read somewhere that iMovie 08 can't import mpeg-1 files. Do I need to convert the files, and if so how?
Thanks in advance, and apologies - this is my first experience of video editing.

I have QT Player but it hasn't "kicked in" when I try to import my videos.
Something called PIXE VRF Browser is supposed to help in the conversion. The QT MPEG-2 thingy won't install until I buy QT Pro, according to what I get on the screen.
Sounds like you have too many applications trying to do the same thing. Either use the Pixela Pixe VRF Browser or use the Mac applications (Mac OS Finder, Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback Component w/MPEG Streamclip) but not both to do the same job. The Apple Finder should be able to copy multiplexed VOB/MPEG-2 files from either your PC burned DVD or directly from your camcorder DVD to your MAC hard drive where MPEG Streamclip/QT MPEG-2 component can convert them for use in iMovie '08. Frankly, I don't understand your work work flow or why you want to import your files to a GOP editor in the first place if your goal is to do frame level editing in iMovie '08.
As for Jon's suggestion, I am on dial-up and cannot download big files at 3-4 Kbps snail pace.
What does this have to do with importing your camcorder files to your PC and re-burning them to DVD for use on your Mac? If I were to make a recommendation here, it would have been to use an external hard drive here rather than DVDs for transporting files between platforms and then only if you want the files available to both. If your goal is only to edit them in iMovie '08 or iMovie HD on your Mac, then why not cut out the "middleman" platform?
I wish I could purchase these updates on DVDs but the genies couldn't even tell me if there's such a service.
Totally confused here. Are you saying your DVR-D300 files were commercial produced or that you are dealing with torrent downloads of copy-written material? These are two separate issues with facets beyond the scope of this forum.
As for "platform", I have iMovie08. iMac does not read the mini RAM disks when I connect the camera to a USB port.
Are you saying the Finder doesn't read them or that iMovie '08 doesn't read them? Do you "finalize" your DVDs before trying to read them via USB as the manual states may be necessary as indicated on page 150 of your manual?
How can I find out that iMovie09 will let me import and edit my Panasonic videos?
You could try going to the Apple site and checking the the tapeless camcorder compatibility chart. The Panasonic DVR-D300 is specifically listed along with a hot link for additional information. However, this still won't help you you don't finalize the content.

  • No sound on mpeg files

I can't get my quicktime pro to play the sound from mpeg files

We need more information to help you.
Have these MPEG files been "exported"?
Do you get any sound from .mov files? Do Web files (trailers) work?

  • Resizing MPEG Movies Causes Jerk On Mac

    Hi,
Interesting issue I'm having. If I link to an MPEG movie,
instaniate it on stage, and then resize the sprite to make the
movie appear smaller then it "jerks/moves" very slightly upon
starting when run on any Mac. It works fine on the PC.
I thought it might have been a floating point error due to
the location being a decimal like 105.5 or something but it's not.
I know this is rather obscure but I'd really appreciate any
feedback if anyone has experienced something similar.
    Cheers!
    -Gordon McLachlan

I had a problem that sounded like that once... was flickering
on the mac but fine on the PC... turned out it was because I had a
large animated background looping behind the MPEG file.

  • No Audio on MPEG Movies with 7.1.5

I'm sure there is a reason for this, but maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I seemed to have lost all audio output in QT for MPEG movies only. QT movies play fine, WMV movies play fine through Flip4Mac, but MPEG movies are acting really buggy and have now lost sound.
    Any ideas?

I'm not really sure what kind of MPEG movie they are. How would you tell?Normally you would open the movie in the QT Player and then select the "Show Movie Info" Window Option to see what format is listed. "Muxed" format normally refers to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files. H.264 and MPEG-4 movie will usually list both their video and their audio compression format. If codecs are not shown, then the compression format(s) may not be QT compatible. Your original message implies that these files formerly played on you system. If true, then have you removed or added any QT components recently or done anything that might have modified your audio settings?

  • MPEG Movie to iPod

I open a mpeg movie that I have and want Quick Time to convert to iPod (mv4) and it does this correctly but I lose the sound when I do this. Is this normal?

    Is this normal?
Certainly for an mpg-2 movie with multiplexed audio.
If you have the Apple QuickTime MPEG-2 Component, you can use the free MPEG Streamclip to convert them.

  • Can I move MPEG movie from Mac to my iPad?

Can I move a protected MPEG movie from Mac to my iPad?

Protected with what and in what way?
As long as you can drop the mpeg into iTunes you should be able to sync it from iTunes to your iPad with the supplied cable in the usual way you'd sync anything else from iTunes to your iPad.

  • Won't display mpeg, mov, avi correctly

    Hello all.
    I am using CS4.
I've had this same issue the entire time I've had CS4, but I thought I'd ask on here.
I see lots of people have different issues with different file types, but I can't seem to find a standard answer.
My issues is that my premiere will import, and play, mpeg, mov, and avi, HOWEVER, I get the following issues:
#1: Red "flashes". Every few seconds, the video will flash red (like one giant colour matte over the entire thing). It's just a flash, but makes it impossible to use the footage.
#2: Sometimes it will play mov without the flash, but doesn't give me a separate audio track to work with (this doesn't concern me too much as I rarely work with mov - mostly just when using footage off my canon non video camera, but if there's a solution, I wouldn't mind hearing it).
The only file type it will play without any issues is wav (oddly enough). On the other hand, these tend to be pixelled (although I don't know if this issue is the wav file, or that I used DVD shrink to capture the video from DVD - I make fan videos. I convert the video files from DVD shrink to mpeg, or whatever else, via Prism).
I can also play mts files from my Sony camcorder without any issues at all.
Someone suggested the issue may be that I also have Roxio installed on the computer (and it was installed first) and told me only one or the other can play these file types (Roxio has no issues). But I'd like to avoid having to uninstall and reinstall everything (and I do use Roxio to make DVDs, as I haven't learned Encore yet).
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the reply.
All the DVDs in question are official DVDs bought from stores. These aren't bootleg DVDs.
Yes, sorry, wmv. (Pixelled example at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEKlJ16-vo4 @ 0:33. You'll note the clips before these two don't have that same pixel issue - it seems random, but even if I import the episode again, the same eps will always pixel. Even when another ep from the same disc does not. Again, official DVDs, not bootlegs).
I've tried to import them as the vob files, but they wouldn't import.
Is CS4.2 an upgrade, or something I have to purchase?
I didn't really understand your article as to how it relates to this matter (as in, suggestions of what I can do to fix the problem).
But your answer only seems to speak to vob files. It doesn't explain why I have issues with the other files. I have these issues whether it's the original video file type (ex: downloaded from a camera), a download from youtube (quicktime), avi download from ANYWHERE, or burned myself with DVD shrink from an actual DVD (from the store) and converted (I use Prism).
The files play, and have audio. They just have this annoying red flash.
Ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Op3khVVS6ig @ 2:53ish. Right as the red lightning in the shot ends, you'll see the red flash I'm talking about. This video was made entirely from footage downloaded from youtube, and was then converted to wmv after I saw the quicktime files were glitching (the example is one I didn't bother to convert since it sort of worked with the shot, so I decided not to bother).

  • Sound for MPG movies

I can't seem to hear sound from MPG movies from my Quicktime player and I can't hear sound from YouTube as well, anybody can help me? thx

There are a couple of things that can cause this issue. The problem could be related to a corrupted QuickTime installation. OR the issue could be caused by trying to play a movie for which you don't have the proper audio or video codec.
Open the movie in a QuickTime player. From the Window menu, you can view the movie info. Look at the info and determine what audio codec is used for the soundtrack. Out of the box, the codecs that QuickTime 7 supports can be found here:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/pro/specs.html
If you find the movie is encoded with a codec not supported by QuickTime, you can Google search for that particular component, and install it.
To get movies to play in You Tube, you need to download the latest Macromedia Flash player.

    Hello!!
Actually, you need Oracle Spatial or Oracle Locator. Oracle Locator is free on Oracle Express, and you could start with it. Otherwise, if you want to know more, Oracle Spatial comes with Oracle Enterprise, and Oracle 10g gives you a schema that allow you to store, manage and query spatial data through Oracle functions, etc.
To start using MapViewer, considering that you already have some spatial data stored on the database, you could download the MapViewer kit at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/spatial/index.html.
You could buy the Pro Oracle Spatial book. It´s very good.
    Good Luck!
