No sound on my laptop except through headphones and everything is up to date

The other night I watching a tv show online and it was taking to long to load up so I decided to refresh the page. After everything refreshed I didn't have any sound. I can get sound if I use headphones and I went to device manager to update the drivers and it came back up to date but I still don't have sound. I have windows Vista if that makes any difference.

OK - sorted now. After all my previous options I flashed the bIOS to the latest download on the HP site but still no go. Then I thought I'd try the only other thing mentioned that I hadn't done - I downloaded the audio drivers and was going to reinstall them but when I ran it I had the option of reinstall or remove, I remembered someone posted removing and then letting the OS auto-reinstall on the next boot worked so I chose the Remove option. Sure enough when I logged in after the restart there was no audio device at all so Windows went away and found the original audio driver in the Windows folders and reinstalled - and we had sound back. Then got the driver updated to the latest through Device Manager and (hopefully) back to how it was yesterday.

My macair's peakers dont seem to be working. The sound does play through headphones, usb, and external speakers but can't seem to get the sound to come out normally. I've been through System Preferencer > Sound but everthing seems to be turned on. Help? What else can I try? Thanks

Still a error there,.....your 'external speakers' are your built in speakers.
Did you mean to say -- "I have sound thru the headphone jack but NOT the built in/external speakes"

Ringtone play through headphone and speaker

With the headphone (come with the box) plug into iphone 4, when I selecting the ringtone from the settings > sounds > ringtone, the iphone will play the sound through headphone and speaker. Same things happen either with silent/mute switch turn on or off. When in public area, I would like to have the ringtone to play through my headphone only not the phone speaker, is that anyway to do this?

with iOS 4.1 on both my 3GS and my wife's iPhone 4, I can hear the ringtone through the headphones regardless of whether the phone is muted or not. I can hear through the speaker (with and without headphones) only when the phone is not muted...

No Sound except through headphones

I have an Envy Phoenix 810 PC with an Envy 23 Monitor with built in speakers running windows 7. I can test sound on the computer with headphones and they work and I can test the internal speakers on the monitor and they work but I cannot get any sound externally without headphones. I called hp support and really got the run-around. This is the same problem with my home computer same configuration except it is running windows 8.1. Both computers are new but I am frustrated with this issue. HP support had me run system recovery on my computer at home with no success. Another support person reinstalled all the drivers but still there is no sound except with headphones. Do you have any suggestions? I have a jack plugged from monitor to computer.

Headphones plugged in, but sound is coming out from both headphones and speakers

My laptop has had this problem for quite some time now, it first materialized when I updated to Windows 8.1. I had recently upgraded to Windows 10, and the problem fixed itself. But when I used the laptop the next day, it reverted back to playing from both headphones and speakers, so it's not really a problem with the hardware. I've also restored the laptop multiple times (using restore point), and the problem gets fixed for a day, then comes back the next day. I've tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it, but no luck.
Laptop does not recognize the headphones even when they're plugged in.
Any other solutions?

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 14-b017c Sleekbook and not playing sound correctly. Here is a document on troubleshooting sound.
Here is another step to try.
1. Right click speaker icon (right hand corner)
2. Select Playback devices
3. Right click Speakers IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio is your default.
4. Enable it and set as Default
5. Click Apply/Ok
Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues as headphones or speakers.
You can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook.

Sound doesn't work correctly through headphones

I just today bought a HP Pavilion 15 laptop which plays sound perfectly fine without any headphones plugged into the 1 and only jack but when i plug a pair in for such as my iPhone earphones for example the sound becomes very unclear and quiet even at full volume. Can anybody please help me?

I understand that you are having an issue getting sound to your headphones. I will be happy to help you with this. Let's start by setting the headphones as the default audio device. This third-party link will show you how to do that. It is for Windows 7 but will work for Windows 8 as well. The only difference is that you will search for Control Panel from the main tile page and then in the Control Panel go to Sound. It sounds like you have tried a few different headphones is that correct? What operating system are you using?

Help...no audio from iPhone (including calls) except through headphone...

I don't know if it's the fault of today's new update, but after adding the new update to my iPhone today, I decided to try the headphones for the first time (I had never plugged them in before).
I could hear through the headphones fine, but after unplugging them, the entire iPhone is now mute.
I tried re-syncing it to iTunes, but I'm still not getting any sound from the phone's speakers. I played with the volume, moving it up and down, but can't hear anything when I try to make calls or listen to music or watch video content.
Has anyone else experienced this issues? Any ideas for fixing it?

I had the same problem a few days ago, went to the Apple Store and they told me that after using your headphones, a little switch inside the headphone jack can get stuck. They told me to plug the headphones back in and play a song and pull the headphones out while its playing (this will pause the song) push play and the speaker should work again. You may have to do this a couple of times, they had to with mine.

HT1349 I have lost sound. It's ok with headphones and the ring tone works but otherwise no sound. I've restarted, checked the mute lock and bottom of page when right swiped etc and all no good. Any ideas

Audio out both through headphone and and speaker (line out!)

Using latest Snow Leopard with latest Windows 7 and Bootcamp 3.0 drivers.
Everytime I plug in the headphones from the front of the Mac Pro, the speaker doesn't mute. I get sound out of both connections.
I downloaded the latest drivers from Realtek and the same thing happens.

Why is my music playing through headphones and speaker?

Just yesterday my iPod Touch started acting weird. First it would play my music for awhile, then pause. I would hit play, then it would start playing but only through the speakers. It would then start playinh through the earphones then pause again. And then this morning my iPod started playing through both the speaker and headphones. Help!
ps- I have an iPod Touch Second Generation That Has Been Recently Restored

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore the iPod from backup.
- Restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod.
If you still have the problem it is likely due to a hardware problem like maybe the headphone jack. I would them make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

If you have not yet restored the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod try that. If stil have the problem you very likely have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I tried to listen to music on my IPhone 4S and it was very fuzzy and didn't sound right. I made sure that it wasn't the headphones and everything. I went to the apple store and they said that there was nothing they could do. HELP!!!

I went to two different apple stores and both people looked at it and they said that my phone definitely had major hardware issues and that the dock was broken and that the headphone jack was broken but they said that I was out of warranty so I would have to pay around $200 for a replacement or an upgrade. But I really don't want to go that because I am waiting for the newest iPhone to come out because my contract is up in November. The guy in the 1st store was surprisingly rude to me.

Suddenly, all the sound was gone from my computer. The volume is definitely turned up. I just downloaded iTunes 7.4.1; not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Try going into Audio MIDI Setup and Change the Audio Output to 44100.0 Hz. Some Applications change that setting and it causes the sound to stop working on the rest of the computer. Here is a link with more info. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300832

Sound heard through headphones, but not with internal speakers

Recently, my computer stopped producing sound from the speakers. However, I plug in headphones and everything can be heard. I've already checked Sound in System Preferences. Nothing is muted and all sliders are in the correct position. In the Output Pane, my only option for the output source is headphones, no internal speakers. What happened? What should I do?

I recently got the same problem. Its not that bad but confused me at first. If that is the worst problem you get with your computer consider yourself lucky. You could bring it by an apple store genius and see what they say but its most likely a switch problem like tteuer said. If my memory serves me right that switch is connected to the logic board, if you have it still under warranty, great, if not, you might as well get another laptop if it really bothers you.
Tip: I have made it work by either slowly removing the headphone from the jack or rotating it. If that did not work the first time I repeated it.
