No sound on new install

I just installed CS5 on a brand new PC and I was using CS3 on my old computer.  For some reason I am not getting any sound out of speakers or headphones when I play from the timeline.  And Yes, I do have a waveform on the timeline so it is  conformed.  My sound plays just fine when I am outside PP, for example, using Explorer I can play an audio clip using media player.  I have gone into Preferences and tried to change the options but it didn't seem to matter or make any difference.  What am I missing?
Ted
Maybe I should add that the video/audio file on the tl is DV from my Sony vx2000.  Also, I'll add that the VU is bouncing around and shows that there is plenty of audio.
One more thing, I am using the Matrox MX02 Mini with Max.

No, no, no.  Typing an answer or a  comment can sure get misunderstood on a forum.  I wish we could just talk face to face instead.  NO, what I mean is that I wish I would have known about the issues with Matrox and PP before I spent the $850 for the Matrox.  I am totally happy (so far) with CS5 but not with the Matrox.  I love it!  As far as mp3, just forget I even mentioned it because it has nothing to do with the problem.  I am right now able to edit the problemmatic wedding project with sound included.  It is  working fine because the sequence setting does not include the Matrox settings.  I guess anyway.  I'm not sure of anything anymore but at least its working.
Matrox advertises full compatability with CS5 Premiere Pro but I am not getting it.  I will be going on their forum to see what they have to say about it but last night I was too upset, frustrated and tired to do it.  And als, I was trying to work on the wedding project and didn'[t want to take time away from that.
May I add here that I was also able to import and use AVCHD footage on the timeline right along with the standard dv footage.  I just had to resize the HD footage to fit properly.  It played just a smoothly as the dv footage.  I did a simple dissolve just to see if it worked and it did.  I was absolutely happy!
I guess my biggest disapointment was not getting any documentation or manuals with CS5 because I got the education version.  Had I known that beforehand I would have paid the extra money and got one with the manuals.  I want to see if I can buy them separately.
I thank you for your replies and insight,
Ted
As a sidenote I use Sound Forge to convert mp3 to 48000 16-bit whenever I have to.  I do not normally import any sound into PP that is not 48000 16-bit.

My SSD failed, so I've bought a new one and done a fresh install, just in the processes of reinstalling everything and copying across config files from my backup.
But for some reason I now no longer have sound. alsamixer has everything unmuted. I have no ~/.asoundrc file, nor do I have an /etc/asound.conf file. It should work OOTB though. Here's the output for my modules:

(I've also checked the lo-tech problem of the speakers not working, they play music when plugged into my phone.)
Edit: I'm also getting a popping sound randomly from my speakers.
Edit2: Booted up from a Ubuntu live CD and ran the GUI test speakers app it has and that produced no sound, though did detect the hardware. Not looking good.
Edit3: Got it working. I've unplugged the cable going from the headphone jack on the front of the case from the releavent port on the motherboard. On mine it was labelled JAUD1. Anyone any ideas why that wiuld be messing things up?

Post to some pasting website the output of "amixer", that might help diagnose the problem.

  • [SOLVED]No sound on new install.

I have no sound on my first arch install, please help!
I would post relevant information, but I don't know what to post, give me a list of commands please and I will post the output.
I have tried using the default alsa, I ran alsamixer, made sure all relevant channels were unmuted, played a song through exaile music player(and I have installed codecs correctly) but nothing. The sound test command didn't work either.
[EDIT] There was a channel that I didn't unmute, "front". Please delete this thread.

Yeah, it was, read the first post, I edited it. Stupid mistake by me. This is my first install of arch ever, although I have used linux for 6 years or so. I keep on assuming that any problem is because arch is different, and I am overlooking simple fixes...

  • New install from ftp and cd no sound SOLVED

    Hi,
I've done everything I can find to get sound on this new ftp install but can't get sound to work with the 2.6.23 kernel.
I've updated a couple of other systems to the new kernel and it has kept sounds working fine but not this new install. I've unmuted everthing and raised levels etc.
modprobe .conf has this from running alsaconf
    # --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
    # --- ALSACONF version 1.0.15 ---
    alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
    # --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
Please can you give me some tips. I've a feeling it's something silly I've not got quite checked off right in alsamixer.
/etc/rc.d/alsa start is done and alsa is in my rc.conf daemons.
    Thanks
    Regards
    edit;
I've done another install from cd this time and said no to update to kernel 2.6.23 so now I've got 2.6.22 and sound still does not work. I've done many Arch installs before and never had this problem. what could I have overlooked? xmms with streamtuner is receiving signal but no sound. No system sounds either.

Nope no errors from VLC or Rhythmbox.
Though i noticed in the volume mixer, i now have 2 devices, which i don't think i had before...
Usually i'd have my webcam or usb headset plugged in, but they're not atm, just my soundcard.

  • Can't install drivers for sound blaster live Telling me there isn't a sound blaster card install

I am doing a fresh install of xp on a machine. This machine had no hardware issues before I formated the dri've and re-installed windows xp.
Everytime I go to install the drivers for the sound card I get an error message telling me that setup cannot find a sound blaster card installed on the system?
I even pulled a known working li've card from the machine I have downstairs. Put the card in and started up the machine. The driver pack is still telling me there is no card installed. I've tried three different pci slots as well.
I even went as far as re-installing windows xp without service pack 2 integrated and even that didn't help!!!
Is there some kind of fix that I am missing?

the unipack download from creative will not work. first, try asking around if somebody else has the same 5. creative card as yours. the only solution for your problem is to use the installation cd that came with your creative card. I lost mine so i went to a pc repair shop and inquired if they have a copy of such cd - they normally do.
. you need to remove all the programs concerning creative from add remove programs. 2. shut down, and remove the sound card. 3. turn the pc on and let windows boot normally. install the the softwares and drivers using the cd that came with the box. 4. shut down and install the sound card 5. turn on the pc. windows will find a new hardware and will find the right drivers bec you have previously installed them. There is absolutely no need to reformat your hard dri've.

  • New install help. Please and thanks!

I'm hoping somebody can tell me what's going wrong with my new install.  Here are the details:
    Win7 pro
    i7 950
Quadro 4000 (with massive cooling blowing on the thing)
mxo2 mini max (because I'm slightly cheap, and yes, I feel a little like a hack plugging RCA cables rather than XLR for audio)
    24g ram
    Gtech 4tb graid
2 internal SATA drives (one boot, the other for utilities like tone, graphics I use often, etc.)
    Software:
PremPro (AE, AME, etc) 5.51 (haven't updated to 5.52 - problem here?)
    Squeeze 7
    Trapcode plugins
    Drivers:
NVidia: 276.14 (this is the Adobe approved one, at least so the download site said)
    Matrox: mtxutils_551
    So here are the issues:
-->  Code 7 errors while editing a long program ("Open GL does not meet min specs for application").  Before this happens, generally premiere will become unresponsive, program screens will go black and then boom.  On this program, I can get about 6 edits in before it blows.
-->  Cannot export long program (2+ hours).  (Matrox 1080i sequence - footage all P2 DVCPRO HD) Crashes after transcoding approximately 15-20 minutes of program.  Exporting to Graid where project and footage is stored (is this an issue?) Premiere crashes and computer restarts. Tried many different export settings, from "match sequence settings" to Premiere's mpeg2 setting, to the Sorrensen and the Matrox ones.
(Adobe Tech support and a very nice guy named Vinay helped me with a small workaround which involved opening up a hidden admin login, and disabling some Microsoft services and exporting to my spare internal drive)
-->  Also tried importing sequence directly into Encore and AME then transcoding through those.  No luck there.
-->  Premiere Pro on closing gives error message "Premiere Pro has stopped working;  appcrash exception code 00005.  Also, this is occasionally followed by a Visual C++ runtime error
-->  Capture plugins from Matrox are unavailable.  No Matrox capture settings are available.
-->  No WYSUWYG control panel for MX02 (I know this is an Adobe site, but figured someone might have some insight maybe)
So there's the beginning.  There are more, but these are the biggies at this point.
Thanks a million.  I'm a very busy one man shop and sincerely appreciate any other busy people taking the time to give me some input on this.

Thanks Jim.  Yeah, that was my suspicion as well. Right out of the box their damm plug-ins didn't install correctly, and it takes roughly a week to get familiar with all the "known issues" - a phrase that irritates me to no end - (if there are known issues - FIX EM before you sell me your s*%t!  Can you imagine delivering a project to a client with a 14 page list of "known issues"?!?!?  Seriously!)
There was a point where I really loved my Matrox products back in the old Digisuite days.  But there was this point where their world class tech support policies changed, and frankly it seems that was the point where the whole company became hack.  I was pretty skeptical about buying the mxo2 in the first place because of this, allowed myself to be "sold" because I needed to get back to work quickly, put the problem out of my mind and get back to work...and now I'm dealing with this.
Thanks for the link.  I think you're right, it would be nice if Adobe would address monitoring through a gpu.  But I'm guessing that won't be until CS6.5, by which point we'll all have to paying Adobe a monthly subscription vig to use their products.  This crap irritates me to no end.  I would love to see a reasonably priced and robust editing system that works like a hammer.  I'm a busy 2 man shop - I gotta pound my video nails quickly and get on to the next house.
Assuming I get rid of matrox...what's the best current solution for monitoring?  Doesn't sound like Aja or Blackmagic have any better solutions.

  • Intermittent crashes on new install

    Hi,
I am seeing intermittent crashes on a new install of Arch.
I see different messages on crash, quite often
INFO: rcu_preempt_state detected stalls on CPUs/tasks:
    also
BUG: Bad page map in process bash
    and other processes.
    sometimes:
CPU: 1 PID: 1 Comm: shutdown tainted
I am vague here in the specific messages because it's not always the same and partly because I usually lose the logs due to hard restarting the machine.
I realize that the information here is somewhat lacking so I don't expect a magic answer to solve the problem. I am looking for advice on where to go from here to try and get it fixed.
The system seems normal most of the time then crashes without warning. When it does happen it will almost certainly get stuck at what seems to be the very  last stage of shutdown (that is if it allowed me to use the shell). It might or might not go wrong after reboot then.
I've done 2 cycles of test using memtest, both passing.
Any advice? Could a faulty hard drive possible be the cause?

TheSaint wrote:How much big is your RAM and swap ?
Perhaps you may add one more swap file, for testing purposes.
I suspect the most problem starts within swapping. You may look at this for references.
I've 4GB RAM and another 4GB swap partition.
I've tried using swapfile instead of the partition already to no avail.
I've also played with the swap performance settings, again, to no avail.
I've some more information to add now:
I left the system on last night and using it normally to see whether the hard drive replacement actually fixed the crashes (assuming the swap issues were separate). After 24 hours and some fair use, I was optimistic that the drive was in fact at fault. I then made some changes to a smb.conf file and restarted using:
    sudo systemctl restart smbd.service
The systemd returned with an error saying smbd failed to start. I checked the logs and smbd reported a segfault. I try again several times, leave it a few minutes and try again (having reverted to the last working smb.conf), segfault still occurs. I then checked "free -m" and noticed that the memory is mostly unused but the entire RAM is used for cache (which I guess is normal anyway). I then cleared the cache:
    echo 3 | tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
and immediately I was able to restart smbd.
A few hours go by and I do some rsync'ing to a CIFS mounted share. Partway through I get the following:

  • X-Fi Platinum + ASUS P5N32 Deluxe + New install = No Sou

I haven't seen anything speaking to a problem like this, so please slap me if I missed it. I just installed a new system, and I have an X-Fi Platinum that I love from a previous system that I want to carry over. Unfortunately, when I install it in the system, Windows XP SP2 identifies the card only as a PCI Device, and can't determine what it is. I can't install the drivers manually because I can't even install them. The installer won't install the drivers if it can't identify the hardware in the system. I've tried this several ways:?) Fresh OS install with all hardware installed.2) Remove card and reboot to redetect hardware configuration, then re-install.3) Fresh OS install with no sound card installed. Install card, reboot, still nothing. Yes, there is audio on the board. I already disabled it in BIOS. The only thing I can figure is that there is some sort of IRQ conflict between that and the two PCIE video cards. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

CBy the way, ?this card totally works and sounds excellent when installed in an older mb built for amd athlon 3000 cpu.
I am hoping that someone from Creative will answer my question here as I can not find a phone number for technical support on the web site.
    Thanks,

  • New Install Questions

Hey folks... I'm looking for some idea's on my new install (system spec's are in my sig).
I have done some basic playing with the system and it's pretty nice so far. I do have a couple of complaints ( hot hot hot) but mostly I'm dig'n the system.
    1) Add Fans... this system is hot, and I'd like to add a/some fans to it for improved airflow. Has anyone done this? I'd like some idea's on how to add more fans. (at least 1 80mm fan would be a great improvement I think). Or any other good idea's on lowering the system/cpu temp (and I did remove the stuff on the heatsink and put on some good AS5... but I didn't lap the heatsink)
    2) Sound/Video capture. Here's what I have right now: Dish-network DVR, Mega 180 (with Logitec 5.1 speakers) and a TV. I would like to be able to watch Satellite TV and have the sound (surround sound) come through the 180. Not 100% sure how to do it right now.
And if I add a Capture card, is it just better to go out and get a upgraded video card & capture card (will most likely NOT be playing games on this system, and if we do they won't be high end frame monsters)? Either way, got suggestions?

    YES
    THANKS
One word of caution.  People have claimed that reversing the fans has only worked in systems that did not have a separate video card in the AGP or PCI slots as they restrict air flow thus making the heat related problem worse than it was to begin with.

First: It's pointless to first install a full system and then try to overwrite the database with another one.
I would INSTALL the system using the database copy.
This procedure is call "homogeneous system copy" and there's a guide for that available at http://service.sap.com/instguides and also in "Note 151603 - Copying an SQL Server database".
The error message is coming because the database has not the proper users, you'd need to run the STM tool to adapt the users and the environment. Those steps are all described in detail in the guide.

  • How to log in to the new installed SAP ABAP instance ?

    Dear Experts,
    In SAP ERP 2005 installation,
I have done central system installation, Now I need to perform postinstallation steps,
Could you please tell me,  how to log in to the new installed SAP ABAP instance and do the post installation?
    Regards,
    Madhavan K

    Hi,
Check the list of post installation steps:
    http://www.saptechies.com/post-installation-steps-for-ecc-60/
From my point of view basic post installation steps are:
    - Installing SAP License (from http://service.sap.com/licensekeys)
    - Setup TMS  (STMS)
    - Import profiles (RZ10)
    - Client Copy (SCC*)
    - Create users (SU01)
However further many steps are required as per your requirements. Cehck the link for more detailed steps.

  • Every time I close FF it reverts to new install settings and doesn't retain any settings, I have uninstalled & reinstalled but no change - help

I installed FF and used it without issue, but on loading it for me next session and every subsequent session it reverts to the state it was as a new install including not retaining any settings for loaded extensions. This is a total pain and is likely to lead me to uninstalling if I cannot find a fix soon. I have uninstalled and re-installed and tried re-set but neither has made any difference.

You can check for problems with preferences and try to rename or delete the prefs.js file and possible numbered prefs-##.js files and a possible user.js file to reset all prefs to the default values.

  • Team Foundation Server 2013 update 4 New Install - Error 503 Service Unavailable for Sharepoint Central Admin

    Hello,
I ran a new install of Team Foundation Server and let it install the built in SharePoint pieces on a single server setup. After the install i'm able to access the
http://teamfoundation:8080/tfs/ address without issue but am unable to create a project. When I attempt to create a project I get the following error:
TF30172: You do not have permission to create a new team project (when checking security i'm a member of the project collection administrators and Team Foundation Administrators)
This led me to look at the sharepoint central administration site where I receive the following error:
    Error 503 Service Unavailable
I've gone through and validated the identity is set correctly in IIS for the following services:
    SharePoint Central Admin v4
    SharePoint15AppPool
The SharePoint Web Services Root is set as LocalService instead of the domain user.
The identity domain user is setup as local administrator on the Team Foundation Server. They are all set to use .net v4.0.30319 with integrated Pipeline mode.
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks!
    Eric

    Hi Eric,
    Thanks for your post.
Please share your detailed team project creation log here.
In your TFS Admin Console>>Extensions for SharePoint Products tab, ensure SharePoint Web Application shows correctly in the right panel. And go to TFS Admin Console>>Application Tier>>SharePoint Web Applications tab, ensure your SharePoint
web application displays in the right panel, then select your SharePoint web application and click Repair Connection, ensure can repair successfully.
In your IIS Manager, select your SharePoint Central Administration V4 site and click Browser:17012(http) in the right panel, check if your SharePoint Central site can be opened successfully or not. If your SharePoint Central site cannot be accessed, I think
this issue relate to your SharePoint site, you should contact SharePoint experts to resolve this issue first. After you resolved this issue and your SharePoint Central Admin site can be accessed correctly, then try to create your team project(within SharePoint
site) again, if there still has issue when creating team project, please share the detailed error message here, we will try to resolve it.

  • New install not accessing existing library on D: drive.

My iTunes library is much larger than my entire SSD I use as a boot volume, so of course I keep it on a second internal hard drive labeled D:.
I just had my system corrupted and all backcup images not read by restore discs, so I had to wipe my C: SSD and re-install my Windows 7, 64-bit OEM from scratch.  Now, with a new install of iTunes, I can't seem to get it to recognize my existing library on my D: drive.  I've pointed it there in preferences both to the iTunes folder and the iTunes Library folder inside it on the drive.  I can open any individual item with iTunes separately and add that to my library separately, but no matter what, this thing just seems to ignore my existing content completely.  Nothing shows in my library within the program but the few nonsense songs that came with some software somewhere.
I at first thought it was finding my TV shows, but it turns out that was only on the cloud.  I don't want to depend on some cloud server for my content I've bought and paid for when I have it stored in redundant hard drives of my own.  I need this to access my content on the drive I've selected for it, including my existing content already there.

OK, I got the menu  bar open and found an article in "help" that said to drag the existing library folder into the iTunes window and that got my stuff into the software, but how can I be sure that new purchases go into the proper folder on my D: drive rather than into some C; drive location.  I have a terrabyte D: drive that is already red in Windows Explorer and still has more space left than this SSD I'm using as a C: drive had blank.

  • V6.01, Windows 7, click on icon, "firefox is already running but not responding" Task manager doesn't know about it. I can't quit it or get it to load. Brand new install. What to do?

Brand new Lenovo computer, Windows 7 Home. New install of Firefox 6.0.1, set as default browser, don't launch when I click done. Icon appears in tray. I click the icon, and a message says "firefox is running but not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing process, or reboot". It's not obviously running. I can't find a way to make it quit. Task manager doesn't list it as a current application. Uninstall using the control panel uninstall function and then reinstalling gives the same message. Rebooting doesn't fix the problem and gives the same message. Firefox had been working until I tried to update my bookmarks.

No can do. I can delete the current profile and install Firefox, which should create a new blank profile. The message still says "Firefox is already running." I can place my old profile in the proper folder, and Firefox will still be already running. I can't actually use Firefox, because even though the message says it is running, there is nothing on the screen I can access.
After uninstalling Firefox, deleting the two items left in the Programs folder, and deleting the profile again, it still didn't work. I then got frisky and from the Roaming folder I deleted the Mozilla folder which contains the Firefox folder which contains the now empty Profiles folder. That worked, and a new set of folders with a new blank profile were created. So apparently it was the empty folders that never got deleted that were causing the issue.
Thanks for your suggestion. It got me thinking.
