No sound on Powerbook 12"

Hi, I have a 12" Powerbook, with 1.5 ghz processor. I just installed Leopard on it ...
The problem is there is no sound. I'm wondering do I need drivers or does it have to do with Leopard? Everything else seems to be working fine. When I press the volume up/down button the volume bar doesn't move.
Thank you
RJ

mastroiani:
Try re-installing the Mac OS X 10.5.1 Update and see if that makes a difference. Remember to Repair Disk Permissions in Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility before and after installation.
Good luck.

  • Buzzing Sound from Powerbook G4

I'm experiencing this problem with my Powerbook G4. The problem has been occurring pretty much ever since I owned the machine, and it's driving me up the wall!!
Whenever the machine is using some sort of Firewire Audio device it emits a loud buzzing/scraping sound, coming from under the left hand speaker. The buzzing gets worse when I start an audio App of some sort, such as Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Sibelius and even humble iTunes!
I've tried a Digidesign MBox 2 Pro, and an M-Audio FW410, both of which exhibit the same behaviour, and don't cause the same problem when I try it on other Macs (I've tried it on an Intel Mac Mini, a MacBook, and a MacBook Pro so far).
Things I've tried to fix it:
    1. Unplugging the Mac from the mains power and unplugging the interface from the mains, and all combinations of the two.
    2. Reinstalling Mac OSX (I've tried both 10.4 and 10.5).
    3. Updating drivers.
I've got AppleCare, and the technicians at my local Apple Store kindly took in the machine and have now replaced the entire Logic Board twice, and still no change in behaviour. I'm now in discussion with Apple Technical support, who take the line that there isn't a problem with the machine, it must be the third party device. I would agree with this of course, except I've tested the devices on other machines, and they work fine, plus the two devices are from two different manufacturers. I do feel a bit like Apple don't know what's wrong and are giving me the easy answer of "it's not our fault".
One of the technicians did mention the sound was coming from one of the logic chips on the board if that helps anyone!
Is anyone else experiencing anything like this?

The speaker volume is stored in the PRAM, so you might try resetting it next time you have the problem:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • No sound from PowerBook G4

PowerBook G4 sound output frequently disappears. When this happens, System Preferences says "no output devices found" where it used to show internal speakers, etc. No sound through headset when plugged in either. Repairing permissions, followed by a restart, restores the sound, but this must now be done almost every time the computer is used.  Suggestions?

  • No sound on PowerBook G4 10.5.8

I have recently purchased this computer off of craiglist and sound stopped working
I go into sound settings and its there "internal speakers" it is not muted but no sound is coming out.
    I am at a lost.
    thank you

I don't know if this will help or not, but there is an internal ribbon cable that if damaged will prevent all sound from your Mac. I've had to replace this on my 1Ghz 17" Mac because I broke off one end of the connector to it when replacing my hard drive. The cable goes over your hard drive as you can see in this picture.
Replacing the cable cost me $25 used from usedmac.com (including shipping). It could be something else too. This person at ifixit.com replaced the ribbon but is (or was) still having issues.

  • Flickering horizontal white stripes on screen

    Full Apple Hardware Test passed.
Power Management Unit PMU is reset.
White horizontal stripes covering the picture appear sporadically.
Sometimes entire screen gets white and returns to normal after a while.
Sometimes entire screen is covered with vertical gray scale stripes.
Stripe flickering is synchronized with hard disk or DVD-ROM drive sound.

  • Multiple HDs

Hey, Iv got a question about using multiple HDs while editing.
The way my setup is now I have two Firewire HDs (320 and 160) daisy chained together. I use the 320 for the capture scratch and all of the Final Cut Express files. I just recently purchased Final Cut Studio and a 1 TB HD. I was going to use the 1 TB HD as my capture scratch and then use the 320GB for all of the project files. I was just wondering if this will slow down the firewire connection or if it would be better to just put all the files on the 1TB HD.
    Thnx Matt
P.S. By project files I mean anything other than the captured video that you would put in the browser, such as Songs, titles from Livetype, and Pictures.

Are you editing on the PowerBook or a Tower? (Sounds like PowerBook ) If the PowerBook it is worthwhile getting a FW or eSATA card (probably FW card) to get extra busses (or a card for the Tower if you have one) will help increase performance...FWIW when I have had to I have daisy chained drives for DV and HDV and it works, but if you split them you are better off since they will not be going over the same connection. Practically though you may not see much difference but since the cards are so inexpensive it is a worthwhile item to have.

  • Fan Not Comming on,Hot power Book?

Hi: I am not sure if my fan should be running as my PB is Hot. After tiger, it ran all the time. deleted Virex and it's OK now. The fan came on after that for a few sec here and there. But I am just wondering how do I know it's back to Normal now?
Any suggestions as to how to check the fan to see if it's working ok? Maybe I am just worried over nothing.
    Thank You

    ~~Should I remove Virex ~~
    Yes. It causes problems.
~~If I remove Virex what should I use for virus protection?~~
Nothing. You have Mac OS X. Compared to Windows, it's a different world. As far as I know there aren't any OS X viruses at this time.
    ~~Also I don't hear a fan? I know Apple's are great but are they really that quiet?~~
The only sound my PowerBook makes most of the time is when I tap the keyboard. Occasionally I'll hear a little whisper as the fan comes on for a minute or two. If I hold my ear within a foot or so of the keyboard I can hear a low hum as the hard disk spins. My PB is virtually silent.
Oh, about the heat. It's normal for the underside of the case to become quite warm. It shouldn't get hot enough that it's painful or dangerous to touch. But it can get warm enough that it's uncomfortable to have it against bare skin for a length of time.

  • No junkmail box

I recently purchased an imac 24" and attempted to set up my email (pop) and transfer old emails to it (which didn't go very well - lost most of them).
After having my junkmail go through a training period and then setting prefs to send junk mail to the junk mail folder, I get a response that says, "The destination mailbox does not exist." In addition, I have no "e-mail sent" sound so I'm constantly having to check to see if my mail has truly gone out.
I checked out what others had done and in one case the person had to delete his mailbox and start over. If I have to do this, I will but - will I lose the inbox and sent emails I have now? Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated!

Before you delete anything I would try deleting the Mail Preference file.
    /Users/Yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    That may help.
For the sound you may want to look in mail>preferences>general> and in that pane there is a box which needs to be checked for the new mail sounds.

  • Video and sound stutters in imovie project, made up entirely of stills with voice-over and music. I'm using iMovie 9.0.4 on a PowerBook 2GHz running 10.6.8 with 274 GB of space free. Size of project is 588 Gb.

This particular project is made up entirely of still photos with Ken Burns moves and dissolves between each photo. As I got further into the project, the voice over audio started stuttering, and now it hardly plays at all with a motorboat sound when it does play. I've also started added music with the dsame audio problem. I'm running on a Mac PowerBook 2GHz using System 10.6.8. I have IMovie version 9.0.4. The project file size is 588 Mb. I have 274 Gb of hard disc space left. I have shut off all other running programs and even disconnected from the internet, but nopthing seems to help. I acts like it's a memory problem of some sort, but all other applications run fine.

  • Powerbook G4 sounds like it may explode - failing hard disk?

Last night during a World of Warcraft adventure, my trusty Powerbook of about four years started making a noise something like a small, accelerating race car. As far as I can tell, the sound was coming from the upper left area of the laptop. In a panic, I immediately shut the machine off and didn't use it for the remainder of the evening. That was the first time that had ever happened, and I've been playing Warcraft on this computer for years. Nothing out of the ordinary.
I tried to play again earlier today, and was successful for about an hour before the noise started again.
I wasn't able to find much through Google other than suggestions to try AppleJack, which I did. It found nothing, or was supposedly able to repair any problems. I then used my OS X install disc to run a hardware test, which also came up completely negative
The funny thing is, during the hardware test [while it was testing the logic board], it made the noise for a few seconds, then moved on to other areas of the computer.
Any ideas? I'm dead broke and hoping I don't have to invest in anything too spendy...

Hi, padfoot. It sounds to me as though what you've been hearing is a cooling fan that rarely comes on in the course of your everyday computer use. When heavily loaded, the processor generates more heat than usual, and a temperature sensor activates the fan to dispose of the excess heat.
Your computer's hard drive is under the trackpad, and if the HD were going bad and making awful noises, it wouldn't be likely to stop making them and behave normally again, even briefly. Nor would the sound be likely to seem to come from the upper left part of the machine.

  • Powerbook G4 sound card

What is the consensus on soundcards? Should I upgrade for studio work using L7E or just keep the built in sound card in my powerbook G4.

You profile seems to say you are using a Firewire solo, whic you could use for outputs.
Also, depedning on your powerbook, you may have optical output capability - I am using mine with a set of reference monitors that have optical SPDIF inputs. I think that is probably fine, if you have the option.
Otherwise if you upgrade your audio interface, it may also have other options for output as well.

  • Powerbook Surround Sound

I use a powerbook connected via firewire to a Motu 828mkII (which then connects to my surround sound speakers)
In Logic, I have no problem sending signal to different speakers in my surround sound set up.
I am having problems with playing a DTS audio disc via iTunes (which just plays it as a stereo pair and sounds like a hiss) or the internal DVD player (which says this type of movie is not supported).
In the utility Audio/Midi Setup, I have my audio output set:
    Mains (Channels 1 and 2)
    5.1 (Channels 3-8)
This goes to a receiver set to 6 channel direct.

    Hi Andy,
I don't have any personal experience with your problem, however, I think it can be configured as you wish using the Audio Midi panel in utilities via an aggregate audio device. Although this post itself may not help you, it may explain aggregate audio devices a little more: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=240468&tstart=0. Finally, you may want to try reposting in OS X Technologies--> Audio. You might be able to find some more help there. Good Luck!

  • Powerbook making clicking sound and running slow

I have had my powerbook for 3 years. Just recently it started running very slow and spinning beach ball comes up alot. There is a clicking sound coming from the top left corner of the keyboard by the speaker. When the clicking starts is when the beach ball comes up. It doesn't happen all the time. This occurs about every couple of minutes and then goes away. Once the clicking noise goes away the computer runs fine. I have ran disk utility, onyx and techtools (no errors have come up). Nothing has seemed to fix the problem. Can anyone give me some advice on what might be the problem. Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
That sounds like a hard drive possibly beginning to fail. However, it's located on the left side under the palm rest. In the upper left corner of the keyboard, the only moving part is a fan, however, if that were doing something odd it shouldn't cause the beachball to come up, which leads me to think it's a hard drive issue. Next time you hear the ticking, see if it could be coming from under the left palm rest area.
So, ensure that your important data is backed up, and do it regularly, if not doing that already. Assuming it is your hard drive, you can either live with it, or replace the hard drive. (Don't know if you have Applecare, since you said your system is 3 years old). You may have a 4200rpm drive in there today, with 5400rpm being mainstream today, and 7200rpm the faster option. Sizes go up to 160GB in 5400rpm and 100GB in 7200rpm. Seagates come with a 5 year warranty versus 3 year for most other drives.
If you're handy, you can do the replacment yourself or an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple can do it. If Apple or AASP does the replacement, make sure they write on the service order that you want your old hard drive returned to you. Recently, there was a person who was surprised to find that Apple may retain the drive as a trade in on the replacement drive. Also, if it were me, I would specify I want a new drive and not a refurbished drive.

  • 5.1 Sound on a 12" Powerbook

I recently purchased the Logitech z5500's. What would be the best/cheapest way to get 5.1 sound out of my powerbook? I have the Soundblaster Live! 24-Bit External Sound Card, but I don't think the software is compatable with Macs. Any information you have about this would be greatly appreciated. There has to be some way to make it work because Apple sells these speakers on their f'in website...
Also, does anyone know anything about hooking Xbox live up to a powerbook to use as a wireless card?

    Welcome to the discussions, Alex.
A review on Apple's Irish store mentions a user using an M-Audio Transit to connect these speakers to his PowerBook. I don't know anything about it, but it seems to be a USB device that (above other things) adds an optical output that the z5500's can connect to for 5.1 sound:
