No sound other than via digital output

My sound options suddenly have been reduced to digital out with the volume control in the control bar greyed out and inoperable. Opening preferences only gives me a digital out option - therefore no sound via internal speakers or headphones or any other outputs. This problem literally appeared out of nowhere.
Any suggestions on how to solve it or why it may have happened gratefully received.

I haven't seen the new Macbook Pro but In understand that the audio socket is both in and out, which you set in System Preferences - have you managed to set it to input? That would disable the analogue output, though whether it would leave the digital output operational I don't know (there wouldn't seem much point, but there apparently isn't a digital in option).

Realtek onboard sound is stuck in digital output

I just can't get this thing out of digital output mode. Now I have no sound because all the analog ports won't work. Keeps saying nothing is plugged in. I can't reset the analog speaker because it's grayed out in Vista. This problem looks to be very widespread with computers using Realtek and Vista, just do a google search and you'll see for yourself.
I have a real feeling it's software problem between Realtek and Vista. But I really think Realtek is just awful to began with and shouldn't be put in any computer period. If I can't get this thing working by tomorrow I'm going to get a real sound card.

Sound issues seem to be higher these days in general - all the sound vendors - XP (SP2 and 3) and Vista.
You may to try http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/
Installing the latest driver from realtek.tw seems to be helping a lot of folks. You didn't list the model of your PC, but you can look up your model's product specification to find out which codec package you need ... AC97, HD Audio, ALC888.

No sound other than MIDI files

it appears that only MIDI files will play on my system. we have not updated anything in the last week and the sound just quit other than MIDI files. we are running XP on a HP M7067c desk top.

It's possible that Windows Update installed some updates while you were sleeping

M-ITX Mainboard other than VIA

Hey guys, I got my hands on a very small ITX case and I was wondering if there are any other mainboards on the market other than the VIA mainboards with intergrated CPU`s? (socket A,Socket 478,Socket 754 or even Socket 940)

Not to worry, I read the manual where it explains how to set up rules and it seems easy enough using the GUI.
However I'm now at the position of either allowing all access to port 548 (including from the WAN) or only allowing it from the LAN. A VPN connection is given a 192.168.1.0/24 address so my assumption is that it should then be allowed access to port 548. But it's not...
Unless someone here has a clue perhaps I should move this over to the 10.6 Server discussion.
As a side issue, what will I do for a Firewall when I move up to Server 10.9? I'd rather not get my hands dirty in Terminal! What was the justification of removing the GUI Firewall, especially as the price decrease must have attracted many more users with less of a clue than me!

No sound via digital output after reinstallation of snow leopard

Hi,
I use my mac mini as Media Center using the XBMC.org for the last year.
yesterday, I decided to reinstall the Mac Mini, and to organize everything I have there. I erase the HDD and install the 10.6.2 retail DVD and upgrade to 10.6.4
After everything done successfully, I realize that there is no sound via the Digital I/O which works great before that process. I tried this issue with several software and even in the prefs, the only audio device is the 'Internal Speakers'
Any idea?

For DVD Output you need to set DVD Player to stream to digital audio, look here:
DVD Player -> Preferences -> Disk Setup | Audio - Audio Output
I assume you have selected "Digital Out" in:
System Preferences -> Sound - Output

Hi, ive bouht th right toslink cable to conect my mbp 15" to my receiver. Analog out works without problems but as soon as i connect it digitally, the red light at the end of the tost link cable appears but it doesnt deliver any sound. Neither digital dvd output nor mp3s in itunes. It just doesnt work. Apple Suppot Hotline hasent got a clue.

Easy driver stepper control via digital outputs

Hi, I have a couple little motors that I'm driving with a Sparkfun easy driver board. The board just takes in pulses, and for each pulse it gets it steps the motor one step. Another digital pin sets the direction. I have attached the VI.
I have the digital PFI1 on my DAQ connected to the "pulse" terminal on the board, and it steps when you send pulses to the board. However, the DAQ seems to be operating in burst mode. If I set the frequency to 10 Hz, for instance, with a finite number of steps (say, 1000), the motor steps in little bursts rather than continuously moving. I scoped the output of the DAQ, and it does appear to be turning the square wave on and off.
The pulse chain is initiated by:
1. CO Pulse Freq, set to 0.5 duty cycle and the specified frequency using ctr1
2. Implicit timing with finite samples, # of pulses is the number of user provided steps
3. DAQmx Start Task
I enter a loop to monitor the progress, which just checks DAQmx Is Task Done every so often and updates a counter.
What is a better way to do this? Why is the counter operating in burst mode?

Hm. It appears that Sparkfun has a number of defective units that behave this way. I think my code is actually fine.

I've got a problem... I'm using Arch with GNOME 3 and I have a weird problem. My sound is gone. alsamixer doesn't affect the sound at all and Gnome's volume manager (or whatever it's called) doesnt have any sound output (only Dummy - or something similiar, I'm translating from polish interface). But I hear my mic (very loud). I don't even know where to start diagnosing this problem and would be very, very grateful If you'd help me or just point me out the right direction.

Alsamixer at HDA Intel said, that there are no controls for this device. And as I've mentioned before... everything used to work, and it was possible to 'tune' levels in alsamixer.
It turned out, that I've got a second laptop (both Toshiba Satellite) which has the same problem. Sound used to work, but now it's gone. Even alsaconf said, there are no sound cards in there. I've found a similiar (quite) problem in here:

No sound other than alarm works . Says headphones plugged in

today suddenly the sound stopped working through my speakers. If i hit put headphones in, it works, but taking them out , i get no sound. I push the volume buttons and it says "headphones" like they are still in, but they aren't. what could be causing this? ive tried poking around in the headphone hole to see if something in there but nothing seems to be working
i do not have applecare, but i think its technically still under warrenty. would apple fix this for free?

If still within 1 year Warranty, yes. Blow out headphone jack with compressed air. Plug and unplug headphones several times, try to clean out the jack.

Best sound other than AIFF

To save space on DVD I've graduated to Dolby but using Compression set to NONE and dialog normalization set to -31, I find the sound harsh and some of the subtle tones are missing on certain music tracks.
Can anyone suggest some compromise settings - I still need the space (AIFF takes me up to 4.7 GB on DVD-R).

You may already know this stuff, but I'll post it in case you don't.
When you're setting the Dialog Normalization, you're setting a number that is entered into a math formula, not a final level. On DVD titles, you're interested in making the average dialog level equal across all tracks. Explosions, train whistles, soft breezes through the trees, can vary, but average dialog level is supposed to be equal. And that level should be -31dBFS (deciBel Full Scale).
The way to accomplish that feat is to enter the number that represents the average voice level in the source file. If the source audio is coming from FCP, that number might be -12dBFS.
That sets a Control Parameter, a flag of sorts, that the playback device uses for playback. It tells the player to attenuate the audio level by this formula:
-31dBFS + DNV dB
So, in the above example, the formula would result in the playback device attenuating the audio by:
-31dBFS + (-12) = -19dBFS
This would result in an average dialog level of -31dBFS.
Make sense?
If you set dialnorm at -31dBFS, then you are telling the player to NOT attenuate the audio at all from the levels set in the source file. THe risk there is that some peaks might be above 0dBFS, which is a Bad Thing.
As for the Dynamic Range Compression, normally you should set that at None. The danger of setting anything else is the risk of possibly creating an unappealing volume pumping. Dynamic Range Compression will try to even out the difference between the highest and lowest volumes in your audio file. But it is not data compression.

HT1338 my sound has a permenant mute selected i went to the system preferences and it is not checked in the box and i have no sound other than the sound that comes on when i restart my computer

After some updates i noticed my sound not working. it has the symbol of mute but the mute button is not selected in the menu the out put says no devise selected what can i do to get my sound to work again.

Does this mean my soundcard is dead? I was working with my computer and I have the latest vista drivers installed. The sound was working while gaming or listening to music. I shut the computer down and went to bed. I turned it on this morning and when windows boots, all I get is static and no other sound.

It would help if you would post up the model of your sound card and what other troubleshooting steps you have tried.
Disconnect your speakers and connect a pair of headphones to the Line Out of the sound card. Are you getting static from the headphones?

I wouldn't mind getting the Entertainment Plus pack to enable Comedy Channel etc. B ut on the webpage it seems that it is only available via Platinum package. NO WAY in the world do I want to pay $120/month for the privilege.

So just call up and ask for it to be added under Build Your Own. EDIT: The Doc is correct that if you are on an Entertainment bundle that only has Platinum as an included option then you can't downgrade the Foxtel portion and just add on Entertainment Plus channels.
