No sound output in Messages

I'm running 10.8.2 on a MBP 2.66 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.
When I go into the Messages preferences, the Sound output option is greyed out, similar to the Camera.
Microphone is working fine but I can't hear anything from the other side.
If I plug in some headphones, Sound output option changes to Headphones but remains greyed out and sound still doesn't work.
I've already tried resetting the PRAM with the Option-P-R trick but that hasn't helped.
Thanks in advance for helping to fix this.

HI,
Sound in Messages needs the Output device set in System Preference > Sound > Output in the first place.
This should then show up in the Messages Menu > Preference > Video Section in the output drop down (If there is only one choice in System Preferences then it will not be a drop down but just the greyed out name of the Output.
PRAM is OPT+CMD+P+R not just Option and the letters.
If you have sound in other apps like iTunes and the volume is actually set high enough then open the Connection Doctor in Messages > Video menu.
If you do this during a Chat then the incoming Video and Audio feeds are represented by two green bars.
Having a green bar fro audio doe snot actually mean anything is being sent from the other end.
But a lack of a green bar does mean they are not sending anything.
Get them to Check:-
They has set the mic and Volume in System Preferences > Sound > Input.
The volume needs to move the blue response bar at least halfway but not bang into the right hand end.
The Same mic or input device needs to be selected in Messages > Preferences> Video Section > Microphone Drop down.
It also needs to be "On" and ticked in Messages > Video menu > "Audio chat Enabled".
(IF they are using iChat then same Menu > "Microphone Enabled")
You can test to a certain point with several computers that Apple tend to keep on line as text accounts (they Auto answer with no human interaction)
Add appleu3test01 or appleu3test02 or appleu3test03 as Buddies to your AIM list.
Normally at least two are on line but as I type this is seems none of them are.
They tend to be playing Apple Adverts and the like.

  • Messages won't connect to bluetooth headset for sound output

I have a Plantronics Voyager Legend bluetooth headset that can pair with more than one device. I got it so I could switch back and forth from my phone to my MacBook Pro (running Mavericks) easily. It works great everywhere. EXCEPT, it won't work for Messages sound output. I've talked with three different Apple support people and with Plantronics. I tried a workaround I found elsewhere using Soundflower, but that did not work either. I've checked all settings, unpaired/repaired, shut down/rebooted/reset; looked for software issues; downloaded the current firmware; tried turning bluetooth off my phone to see if that was an issue; and probably some other things I'm forgetting; all to no avail.
    Any ideas?

    Following up on the above...
My S10-HD paired straight out of the box w/ my iPod Touch 2G; however, when I tried to pair it with my iPad 2, the iPad 2 would just search...and search...and search.
On page 7 of the S10-HD manual, you'll see a note saying, "To pair your headphones again, press and hold the "0" (power) key until the status light becomes steadily lit in blue".
This proved to be the key to getting the S10-HD to work with the iPad 2. The S10-HD needs to be "off", then you'll have to press and hold for around 7 to 10 seconds.
Furthermore, it appears (from my own testing; your results may differ) that the S10-HD can only be paired to one device at a time. That may sound obvious, but what it means is that you'll first have to turn off Bluetooth on the paired device with which the S10-HD is currently connected, then connect it to the other device with which it is already paired. (Kind of a pain, but I can live with it.)
Also, if there's anyone considering the S9-HD or who's had an S9-HD fail because of sweat incursion (i.e., you use it at the gym, etc.), Motorola is offering a warranty upgrade from the S9-HD to the S10-HD. What you need to know is: (1) The S9-HD will fail from the least bit of sweat entering the unit through the speakers; and (2) The S9-HD sounds better than the S10-HD (a lot better...it's a tradeoff you have to be willing to live with if you want these for exercise). To get the S10-HD if you've experienced prob's w/ your S9-HD as described, call Julie Scofield in the Consumer Advocacy Office at Motorola's Corporate Headquarters: (847) 523-5852.

  • Am getting PCM output error message when trying to play a video from iPad2 on my TV

The movie was purchased on iTunes store.  I connected the iPad2 through the adapter via HDMI straight to the TV and I have a Bose Lifestyle system for surround 5.1 sound.  After a few minutes and every few minutes after that the movie would blur and blackout then it would come back.  Eventually I got a PCM OUTPUT error message onscreen.  How do I resolve this problem?

I have been able to open a few items in iTunes, but have not been able to play even those videos from my Apple TV. I can airplay them from the computer, but cannot access them directly from Apple TV. This is a bit frustrating.

  • Weird sound output issue

    Hi everyone,
my main problem this time is that I hear no sound coming from the internal speaker of my G4 MDD 1.25 dual.
I have read some othe topics and I have trash the prefs and did the trick with the mini jack.
I have also install 10.4.11 over my old 10.4.11 using a combo update.
    No results at all.
In sound prefs "choose a device for sound output" I see only Headphones.
If I plug a mini jack on headphones then I see the Line Out option!
If I plug in headphones they work normally, except I see the Line out option and I can hear sound including the startup chime.
    Thank you!!

  • System sound output switchery

    Hi everybody,
I'm having a very strange problem that I haven't figured out how to reproduce just yet but thought I'd give it a try on the forums anyway...
The problem is that the system sound output in the audio prefernce pane seems to be randomly* switching from "Digital Out" to the next one in line, my bluetooth headset. So, if my headset is turned off I get all kinds of "error connecting to bluetooth device" messages and if it's on, the battery drains quickly from connecting and disconnecting all the time. I should mention that Digital out is working beautifully; it's just that I'm getting these bluetooth errors all the time as something is switching the audio out from "Digital Out" to my headset.
*I'm sure there's a cause, but I haven't been able to put my finger on it just yet.
Sorry I can't be more specific at this time...
    Cheers,
    Ryan

OK, I've found that the problem only occurs when watching a movie in dolby digital (VLC or DVD Player) and a sound is played in iTunes or an event happens such as receiving an IM. This is beginning to make sense to me as the receiver after all is receiving a dolby digital signal, and wouldn't be able to play a stereo stream while it has its hands full with the dolby digital. (I guess? Correct me if I'm wrong... anyway the receiver LED can only display stereo or digital, not both at once!)
So my question becomes, how to stop OS X from directing these sounds to my bluetooth headset. There must be a way just to turn off all other sounds while I'm watching a movie in 5.1 or send them to /dev/null or something, anything other than repeatedly connecting/disconnecting with my headset or displaying annoying warning messages.

  • Can´t get optical sound output from my brand new mini

have connected the MM to an optical input on my Yamaha RX-V659, but I can´t get no sound.
Mac-side: After connecting and turning on, "System Prefs -> Sound -> Output" has changed to Digital Output and says that no output controls are available for this output. I have tried playing from iTunes and DVD Player. In DVD player the option for selecting Digital Output had appeared, and I chose that. When I take a look at the end of the cable I plug into the receiver I see a constant red light.
Yamaha-side: I have tried 2 different optical inputs, and gone over my settings several times. The receiver does not seem to detect digital audio coming in. I tried the Signal Info menu on my receiver, and for another source it output:
    PCM, 48kHz, 2.0, Analog
On the optical input it says:
    ---, ---, 2.0, Analog

I have a similar setup to a Kenwood receiver. You are correct that ALL system sounds (frontrow, system alerts, etc.) will play through to your stereo.
Have you tried switching Toslink cables and/or the toslink to miniplug adapter that is plugged into the mini?
I had a bad cable at one point in time, and a bad adapter at another point in the life of this system. You perhaps tried these things already but I only saw mention of trying 2 different inputs (I assume on the receiver) and made no mention of cables/adapters.
Let me know how you make out.

  • Missing Sound Output VIs

    Hello all,
I'm trying to create a DLL that reads incoming sound data through my DAQ board and translates it for my sound card.  Unfortunately, when I run the control program (LabWindows), I get error messages saying that the LabVIEW Sound Output VIs are missing.  Do I need to add another library to my LabWindows project, and if so, which one?  If not, why isn't LabWindows (or the LabVIEW runtime engine, if applicable) finding the VIs in my DLL project library?
    Thanks!

They don't call me "Slowpoke" for nothin'!

    Hi Michael,
Sorry for the confusion!    Guess they don't call me Slowpoke for nothing...anyway, let me see if I can clarify matters.
The problem is not with the control program, per se.  The problem only manifests itself when I call my DLL (created in LabVIEW) from the LabWindows control program.  When I call the DLL from a LabVIEW control program, the DLL works perfectly.  When I call the DLL from the LabWindows control program, the front panel of the called VI has a broken "run" arrow.  When I click on the broken arrow, I get the LabVIEW error message popup.  The LabWindows control program itself flags no errors.
I mentioned those VIs only to offer some context for the problem, i.e., in case you were wondering what their functions and purpose were, since they appeared in the error popup; if I muddled things up for you instead, again I apologize.  Hope this is clearer!
    Thanks,

  • Static on sound output - N95

Does anyone know what can cause static on the sound output from an N95...
I cleaned the speaker grills and it's gone away to an extent but it's still there driving me mad...
    Any suggestions?
    Nokia 5110 => Nokia 3330 => Nokia 3510i (Coffee Damage) ==> Nokia 3510i => Nokia 6600 => Nokia N95 (WITH v21, Finally everything I wanted in a phone!)

Your only option would be to send it in for repair.
Either the small earpiece speaker has developed a problem or else metal dust is stuck there causing the buzzing noise.
Just be very specific that it's the earpiece and not the hands free or the headphones.
Also I seem to remember that sometimes the display may cause noise. But only a repair technician may know for sure.

  • Internal speakers--no sound outputs

Internal speakers suddenly stopped working. Sound output through headphones works. System preferences for sound selection box is grayed-out where you can select internal speakers or headphones for alert sounds.
Used applejack on disk. Repaired permissions. No luck.
    This eMac has OS 10.4.11

    Hi Bob et al,
But I'm still puzzled by the grayed-out box in the sounds prefs. It won't let me select anything for system sounds
In the eMac when you plug a head phone in there's a circuit in the jack that defeats the internal speakers. This can get damaged, usually by someone ripping out a set of headphones while it's plugged in. When that happens the system would see the speakers as "disconnected".
I've repaired this in CRT iMacs but at the school we use a "dongle" so it takes the abuse vs the iMac/eMac.
In the CRTs the problem was damage to the sub board which required soldering. In the eMac the logic board would have to come out and the solder connection inspected if that's OK the jack would have to be replaced.

  • No Audio Output Device message on u305-s5077

I am showing the "NO AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE" message.  I have followed a few of the posts for similar laptops and and tried downloading new drivers which don't seem to be working.
In Device Manager, isn't there supposed to be a "sounds" tab or something to that effect?  In System Devices, I see High Definition Audio Controller which says it's working fine.
Any suggestions to get Sound going again would be greatly appreciated.

Look under Sound, video and game controllers.
In the meantime, try reinstalling a driver. Try them both.

  • Sound Output to network sound?

How do you set your sound options so that it will default to a network (Airport Express) sound device?
    Todd

    Hi
Can't be sure but System Preferences>Sound>Output?
In Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup there's a field called Default Output in the top-right corner, maybe that?

Oops, wrong on both counts it seems

  • X220 Weak sound output

    Hello there everyone.
    I (proudly) owe a x220 thinkpad laptop.
This is a really great Laptop , but i do suffer from 1 thing.
as a person which use this computer with Traktor to live mix music on parties, i need a decent sound card, unfortunatly i cant say so on the x220 sound card.
The sound output from the Mic+Speakers output is very very weak!
Is there anyway to enchance the sound?
    Thank you very much

    Hi sahar540,
have you tried the solution offered in the following linked to knowledgebase article?  If this doesn't help maybe you could post which operating system you have installed along with the installed audio driver version.

  • Can not change sound output. Help Please

Well, i've been digging all the forums lately in web. my problem is, i can't change my 'system' sound output to my sound card which is Native Instruments Audio8 Dj.
Let me explain my problem decently. I do the usual procedure, system preferences > sound > n then select the output. but nothing happens. it is always set on internal speakers or headphone or whatever plugged in to the *Built-in Output*. I try switching from audio-midi setup n that doesn't work as well. The system perfectly recognizes the sound card, i can get output from sound card with applications which have their own output settings. But i cant change the system output. I have the latest version of soundflower loaded(this might be causing the problem who knows), i used many soundcards before(or maybe even ex-drivers?) n they used to work until i updated to snow leopard. I also tried trashing the files in macintosh hd > library > preferences > audio >>
and those files *did not regenerate* after restart(like 10 times), so i had to copy them from my imac.(hehe). i tried resetting pram or nvram.(didn't do any good too)And also i tried trashing soundpref.plist which didn't do me any good neither. Now i need that sound card to give me my system output. I don't need drivers of any other ex-sound cards or whatever. My drivers are up to date. And im pretty sure this ain't an hardware fail.
    So, any ideas? Thx.

I am having the exact same problem. I have spoken with Apple Care and they are having my case reviewed by "Engineers," apparently. Its very frustrating as I cannot listen to iTunes or any of my video games through my really nice monitor speakers. FYI, I had this problem without installing Sound Flower, since then I have installed it in the hopes that having something different to select it might work but no changes. If I hear any good news from Apple I will be back to let you know. This seems to be a very rare problem as I have only found one other post about this issue.

  • The sound output does not work on my ipod

    Hi There,
I have an Ipod 4 th generation and the sound output no longer works on any device.  I've reset and reinstalled the software but nothing appears to work?
    Any ideas please?
    Serial number: 9C6463XJV9R
    Thanks Chris

If none of the 5 R's helped address the issue, it's likely hardware related.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
As to what exactly is damaged/faulty, no there is no certain way to tell.  It could be the iPod's audio chip or something else on the logic board.
Either way you'll need to have your iPod serviced/replaced either by Apple or a third party company.
