No Sound playing AVI files in Quicktime Pro - help!

Help! I just bought QT Pro for Windows(Xp) to convert my AVI files to Mpeg4 for my Ipod. The Apple Store sales guy promised it could be done. I see video but no sound on all of the AVI files. For example, on 2 of my AVI video files, according to Gspot, the video codecs are "divx 3 low motion" and "Xvid" and they are installed on my pc. According to Gspot, the audio codec required is "0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3" which can play on
--> {Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (advanced)}
--> {MPEG Layer-3 Decoder}
which are both installed on my pc, yet I have no sound. I am stuck! The bit rate is 128. Should I be using another audio codec??? Where can I get it? Help! Anyone?

Some of the avi files created on PCs use variable bit rate mp3 souind. QT will not play that type of mp3 in avi files.
One way to deal with the issue is to convert the mp3 to a QT-friendly format. You can try this process, using this freeware Windows program: VirtualDub
Open the problem file in VirtualDub. Set the Video mode to Direct Stream Copy. That will copy the video to the new file with no change. Set the Audio to Full Processor Mode. Then set the compression to IMA compression. Now use Save As Avi in the File menu to make a new file with a new name. Since only the audio is being changed it is a fairly rapid process.
One last thing. To do this you do have to have the Windows codecs for those video formats installed. That is, you have to be able to play them in Windows Media Player. QT uses completely different codecs.

  • Can't play .avi file by QuickTime Pro

I am a paid QuickTime Pro user. However, I can't play some .avi files. No images, no sound. It just pop up a window shows,
" Additional software is required for QuickTime to playback this media. It may be available from the QuickTime Components page. Click Continue to check for the software."
Then it leads me to the following page,
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=OSX&ctype=696d6463&c subtype=58564944
If any of you confront this problem? And how did you resolve it?
    Thanks a lot

    You need Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.

  • Please help! Playing .avi files in QT Pro

I have installed Perian, been to the Apple Store, and searched high and low for the answer, but cannot figure out how to play .avi files in QuickTime Pro. It's only some .avi files (not all), I can hear the background noise, but the screen is black. Please tell me how to remedy this.
    Thank you,
    Thom

'avi is simply a container that can contain any number of different video codecs. Most, but not all, can be played on a Mac.
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear/play pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.2.1 and 4, QT 7.4.x, 7.5.x and 7.6 and OS 10.4.11 and 10.5.6.
Download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 11.1 for Mac from:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
Note that Adobe requires you to uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, as mentioned here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=1
using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2009-001. (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
And there is an additional kid on the block: SilverLight. Microsoft has created their own version of what a replacement for Flash could be. You can read more about it here:
    http://silverlight.net/
So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards) if you are using a PPC Mac. Version 2 only works with Intel Macs:
    http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/
Recommendation: Close all applications before installing any of the above, repair permissions, reboot, and repair permissions again.

  • Playing AVI File In Quicktime

Ok, here is my problem. I used to have Windows XP on my computer with Quicktime installed. I also had the DivX Suite (including the DivX codec) installed. I had no trouble playing *.avi files in Quicktime. However, now I have upgraded to Vista, I have done the same thing, installed Quicktime as well as the DivX Suite, but every time that I attempt to play *.avi files in Quicktime (I have tried several different files) I continue to get the error message that "Additional software is required for Quicktime to play back this media. It may be available from the Quicktime Components page." and it shows me that I need to download DivX. I have tried uninstalling DivX and downloading a fresh copy and installing. Same thing with Quicktime, but no luck. I have also tried installing the Xvid applications and still nothing. Does anyone have a guess at what it could be and is there something else that I need to do?

I have a question for you instead of any help. I have XP with Quicktime installed. Both DivX and Xvid are installed and I can't get it to play .avi files with Quicktime. All it does is plays about a half second of audio then nothing. It used to pop up the additional software message, not sure if that is still the case. Media Player plays them no problem, but I personally can't stand WMP or any other Microsoft product for that matter. Is there some hidden setting that I need to adjust to make it work? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • How to export/watch .avi files using Quicktime Pro

    Hi there.
I've got Quicktime Pro and I'm trying to convert .avi files so I can play them on my iPhone. I open up the .avi file in Quicktime and then slect the Movie to iPhone option.
It will take about 20 mins or so, but when I open the file all I get is a white screen even though the timer is showing that the movie is playing.
I can't even watch .avi files using Quicktime as all I get is a black screen.
    Could someone please help?
    Thanks

Thanks, but unfortuntately that didnt work. MPEG Streamclip couldn't play any of the .avi files, it still came up with a white screen while playing.
I tried this with a number of .avi files but I had the same problem.

  • Play AVI File On Quicktime

I have a new macbook pro (new to apple former pc quy) and i want to play an AVI file in quicktime but it cant read it. When i play it on my PC it plays fine in Real Player so i downlaoded Real Player for mac and it still wont work????
    ANy help will do
    thanks
    Brad

I just solved this issue on my machine. Something in the Perian bundle also conflicts with Intel core MacBooks. I finally resolved the issue and avoided the white screen by removing ALL 3rd party QT plugins (including Perian) and restarted. I was then able to view the AVI files and avoid the white screen. When I added back Perian, I could again not see the files. So, the solve is remove ALL QT 3rd party plugins. I suppose you can add Perian back after you have used the files you require, but be aware there is still an Intel conflict within Perian for certain AVI files.

  • Playing wmv files in Quicktime Pro

I really want to play wmv files in quicktime. I read that quicktime pro should be able to do so. I have quicktime pro but nether Quicktime Player X or Quicktime 7 Pro can open it, and I know the file isn't corrupted cause it plays on a windows computer. Please help

You need to install Flip4Mac to play unprotected WMV files. WMV content which contains DRM can't be played in Mac OS X.

  • Playing avI files on QuickTime

I'm new to Mac and QuickTime and I can't open some AVI files in QuickTime that I downloaded. I want to use the downoaded AVI files in iDVD to create a DVD movie.

    1. I think VLC, 3ivx® D4 CODEC, MPlayer these player all can help U to play avi on mac, and if you still want to play avi files on quicketime, maybe you should install *_DivX for Mac CODEC_*.
    2. If you want to use these avi to create a DVD Movie, Just follow this guide :

  • Unable to play AVI files with Quicktime

I installed Perian and the xvid codec but still cannot play all AVI videos in QT. Not really a problem since I have VLC. However it would be nice to be able to play AVI files in QT as well

AVI container can accept a real mess of codecs, not all of which are provided in Perian.  Use a utility such as
Media Info - http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net - to get details of codecs used in multimedia
to see which video codec is used and compare it with the list on Perian's web site.

  • No sound for AVI files with Quicktime

I know this is a well discussed topic, but I can't seem to fix this problem.
I upgraded to Quicktime 7.5 and quickly found that I cannot get audio/sound out of my AVI files (most are short clips taken with my Casio Exlim Digital Camera). I tried installing Perian, but that didn't work. I tried reinstalling QT, and that didn't work. I tried repairing disk permissions and that didn't work. Finally, I thought perhaps I had a bad AppleIntermediateCodec file. I downloaded version 1.0.1 from Apple, but it won't let me load it - acts like its an update to an existing file, but the file is not on my system. Here is the contents of my Library/Componets folder:
    A52Codec.component
    AC3MovieImport.component
    AppleIntermediateCodec.component

I am the admin on the system, but I have two other accounts for my sons. Can anyone out there give me a clue as to what I should do next? Thanks.

I am having the same problem. But it's even weirder. Any .avi file I created using my Flip Ultra camera will play with sound. One or two .avi movies I've d/l'd from the 'net will also play with sound. The remainder will not play with sound on QT (7.5). I have VLC, Real and DivX Player loaded, and all .avi files play on those players with sound, no problem.
Now, my Library/Components folder is empty. My Library/QuickTime folder has the following:
    3ivxVideoCodec.component
    AC3MovieImport.component
    AC3MovieImport.component
    CanonMJPEGAVI.component
    CanonText.component
    Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component
    Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
    Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
    XVid_Codec 1.0 alpha.component
    ZyGoAudioS.component
    ZyGoMJ2K.component
    ZyGoTimeCode.component
I followed the instructions on this page, but it still isn't working:

  • How to play avi files in quicktime

I am transferring all my files to my mac from pc. How do I enable quicktime 7 pro to play my avi files???

As you are not only switching from pc to mac, but also intel, a couple of suggestions from one intel mac user to another:
    1) Download the DivX for intel beta here:
    http://labs.divx.com/node/76
Installing should allow your QT player to function well with most codecs that you commonly find which use the .avi container - it's helped me quite a bit.
    2) Download and install the Flip4Mac component for Quicktime here:
    http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm
This is an alternative for those pesky WMV files you need to play. Keep in mind that although the component installs and works on your intel mac, it is not yet optimized, so you need to run QT under rosetta in order to see the functionality of the flip4mac component. The intel mac version is on the horizon, hopefully sooner rather than later.
    3) Download iSquint or likewise another conversion app. I'm offering up iSquint for now since it is free, easy and universal. You might opt for ffmpegX, MPEG Streamclip or others, but these do not run natively on your machine at this time, and you might find them a little confusing. iSquint will read pretty much any kind of codec and container combo, and it does quick conversions to mp4/H.264 files that your QT Player will recognize...
    http://www.isquint.org/
    4) Download and install the latest build of VLC for intel mac:
    http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/macosx-intel/
The latest build of this player has been rocking along nicely for me on the intel machine, and VLC is a great alternative for those video files you come across that just don't want to play in other video apps.

See QuickTimeKirk's response in this thread. You can also try VLC Media Player.
Whichever one you try, just make sure you repair permissions & restart afterwards.
