No Sound Playthrough

Hi,
I recently updated to OS 10.4.10 and lost all sound playthrough from devices plugged in through the mini-plug (microphone) input on the side. I have an external speaker set plugged in to the mini-plug (headphone) output on the side (doesn't work from the headphone plugs in the front either) and in OS9 had always been able to hear sound play through from the input device to the speakers, whether it was my DVD player, game console, tapedeck or iPod.
My sound control panel preferences are set for INPUT: External microphone/Line in (microphone port) and OUTPUT: Headphones (which is the only option that appears). I can see the bars in the monitor move as sound feeds in, and I can even record it with my Amadeus software, but cannot hear it as it plays. In Amadeus, the playthrough button which is clickable when I run it in OS9, is now faded and unavailable, as it is in my other sound applications.
So, one can see the sound is coming in, and it can be recorded. So why can't I playthrough?
BTW, if I run Amadeus or SoundApp or whatever for OS9 in the Classic environment, I still get no playthrough and the playthrough buttons are still deactivated. Reboot into OS9, and all the buttons come back and I can hear the sound playthrough fine.
Thanks!

Mac audio inputs are line-level, so a nomral microphone will need a pre-amp to use them. You could use the iMic

or get a microphone that connects via USB, such as

  • Sound not working for non-apple Programs/plugins

I can't seem to get any sound out of flash based websites, excel (when saving for example), or several other apps.
Quake 3, and itunes still work perfectly fine.
Also, since this happened, quicktime video playback is very choppy (stopping for up to 10 seconds at a time).
This happened after installing Flip4Mac, but I've uninstalled it and nothing has changed. I can't watch youtube at all. I've turned the volume settings for the system and for the actual youtube player all the way up and down and I've seen no change.
I can view the video (and websites) but I get no sound. The same thing occurs on other user accounts on this machine as well. Very strange.
The ads on Apple.com work fine with sound and smooth playback, but MPG videos on my computer don't seem to have sound and play very choppy. The Startcraft 2 gameplay demo plays fine (AVI) and WMV's work, but MPG's and flash sites don't have sound.

  • Alternative sound input

So for christmas, i recieved a wonderful condenser microphone and a preamp. Wanting to make some recordings with garageband, I plugged it all into the 3.5mm jack that was not the headphone jack, assuming that it's the microphone/input... I do not think it is, because nothing will pick it up. I went to system preferences, changed the sound input to the input jack, and the tests did not pick anything up. i tried a regular headset microphone instead, to try to figure out if it was my mic setup or the computer. Sure enough, it's the computer. Both of my microphones work on other devices. is the jack with the diagram that looks like this: >o< the input jack or not? if it is, then why is it not working? if not, then why the **** doesn't apple have an input jack when they have Garageband, a program made for recording?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since folks have been using GarageBand for a number of years successfully with their mics and instruments, perhaps it is the operator...
The Macintosh requires a line level audio signal to record. So if your kit is not producing line level audio, the Mac will not be able to "hear" it. Most PC mics and headset mics do not produce line level audio and are useless for a Mac without some sort of amplification. Additionally, you will not hear anything from the input jack unless one of two things occurs, the app you are using, such as GB, allows monitoring of the input audio, or you use a freebie app called Linein, from Rogue Ameoba, which enables soft playthrough of inputted audio.
But if your kit is producing line level input, perhaps you have not configured GB correctly for recording. In the GB Help menu you will see access to a getting started with GB pdf. In Chapter 5 it explains how to configure GB for voice recording.
Let us know if nothing I have pointed to solves the problem.

  • Can you use surround sound with the built-in optical out on dual 1.8 g5?

Ok here's the thing, I just got the new version of Final Cut Studio, and was wanting to set up my g5 to utilize the surround mixing capabilities of SoundTrack Pro 2.
I have verified that i'm getting 5.1 sound via Apple's DVD Player, but when i go to Applications-> Utilities->Audio MIDI Setup, I cannot configure the system for multiple channels. It only allows me to output stereo.
Is my assumption of being able to use the built-in optical out for 5.1 monitoring incorrect? Do I have to go buy a firewire/usb audio interface?
    Info about my system:
    I have a Bose Acoustimass 10 5.1 Speaker setup.
I have a Onkyo DR-C500 5.1 Receiver, which does dolby pro logic 2 and dts decoding.

    NZane-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
The Mac puts out encoded 5.1. It is the function of the amplifier, receiver or decoder to take that signal and turn it into something useful. At minimum you will need a device that can accept that output and turn it into something useful.
Most studios that I am familiar with want to be able to use their own 5.1 decoder, amp and speakers. Juicier sound!

  • Why is the sound being played back on my retina macbook pro?

I bought a 13inch retina macbook pro on friday last week. I use Skype daily and chat with friends but I am having an issue. Lets say I am on Skype and chatting with people and I listen to music or watch youtube video at the same time the call is going. The person on the other line of skype can hear what ever is going on clear as day. I ALWAYS use my apple earpods while on skype and listening to music. I had a 13inch 2010 macbook pro and it never did this while on skype and listening to something. I took it back to bestbuy where I bought it thinking it was just defect and they replaced it for me, but this computer is doing the same. Is there a defect or something? I want to know becuase this is exreamly annoying.

He's talking about it happening when he's using headphones, that is not normal.
In your system preferences, under sound, in the last tab, use the test microphone function to find out whether Mountain Lion itself is causing you to hear things back or if Skype is sending your audio playthrough to the person your in a video call with.

  • Adobe Flash Pro Sound Errors. Please Help.

I have been working on a kinetic type project for my Electronic Arts II class and an issue with the sound has come up. Every time I go to preview, the work I have done the sound from the song I have been using becomes misaligned. When I go to realign the text to match the lyrics of the song, it seems to work fine. If I preview it all lines up, but when I continue with the project to line up other parts of the animation, the whole thing becomes misaligned again. I have each line of the song separated into different layers and am using motion tweens for movement and to fade the text in and out. I also have the layer containing the song locked to prevent accidental editing. Despite these precautions to prevent accidental rearrangement, the animation never seems to line up for more than two or three playthroughs. This has become a great irritation because the due date is rapidly approaching and because of this error, I have been unable to get very far, and what little work I do have has been ruined. My teacher and I have done what we could to fix it, but have not been able to figure out this problem. Please help me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

if your sound is attached to a timeline, assign its sync property to stream.
also, set your stage frame rate at the sound's rate and export your sound with the best option selected.

exactly the same happened here after upgrading from 10.4.x to 10.5.1. Sometimes the audio devices reappear, if i 'coldboot'. But most of the time it's gone, showing exactly the same errors as unkGenious98 decribed.

  • SB Audigy 2 ZS Platinum "colors" the sound of music when played back. How to change th

I recently purchased a Line 6 POD X3 for recording guitar tracks, and when connected using USB it can function as my computer's sound device. Now here is what I observed:
In all cases described below, the "reference" case is that of the guitar played through the POD X3 with headphones connected directly to the POD (no computer sound device involved).
) When I record guitar tracks using either the POD X3 or the SB Audigy 2 as the computer's recording device, and then play the recorded tracks back using the POD as the computer's playback device (headphones plugged into the POD), the sound is exactly the same as the reference case.
    2) When I record guitar tracks using either the POD X3 or the SB Audigy 2 as the computer's recording device, and then play the recorded tracks back using the SB Audigy 2 as the computer's playback device (headphones plugged into the SB Audigy 2), the sound is MUCH different than the reference case.
To put it simply, the Sound Blaster card is "coloring" the tone of the recorded guitar (regardless of recording device) during playback. I realize that the Sound Blaster drivers are probably designed to "enhance" sound for gaming and such, but the way it shapes the sound of recorded music during playback is extremely undesireable for home recording projects.
Here is another clue that leads me to believe that the Sound Blaster drivers are responsible for this tone shaping: If I am playing my guitar through the SB Audigy 2 and monitoring the sound through computer speakers or headphones (hooked up to the SB Audigy, of course) WHILE Windows is booting up, I can hear a very distinct change in the sound when the SB Audigy 2 drivers are loaded. It seems to me that when Windows is booting up, the Audigy 2 card allows transparent playthrough before the drivers are loaded, but the drivers then take over and shape the sound.
So, if you've understood my observations, my question is how can I avoid any sort of tone shaping during playback by the SB Audigy 2 drivers? I want completely transparent playback such that what I hear during playback is exactly what it sounds like going in, i.e. the reference case described above.

Just for kicks, I decided to install this card on a Dell that I happen to have around.. the specs are above and beyond the configuration of my regular computer (whose specs are above and beyond the specs listed for the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum).. and I am unhappy to report that the same freezing problems occur. I am still unable to use any web update features for ANY of my software, and I am still unable to record in 24 bit audio.

  • Audio playthrough via capture window

How to set Audio playthrough during capture previewing? I want to hear the audio as I preview etc.
It doesn't appear to be in any of the Preferences settings I can find...
    FCP HD 3.0
    Thanks

    William,
Can't be done. And as odd as that sounds (since iMovie can) it's to do with the way FCE captures material. It captures the audio separately where as iMovie captures it all in one muxed file (hence why you can monitor it in iMovie).
It makes the audio easier to work with in FCE as it's already on a separate track, whereas in iMovie you have to extract audio to do any processing to it.
The only way to monitor during capture is by plugging some headphones into your camera.

  • TAM Sound Input Query

    G'day,
Yep, my TAM is still in a state of disrepair... namely external and internal SCSI is non operative (so can't use internal CDROM, nor connect and external device), the floppy is dead, and PCI USB card no longer recognised...
BUT so I was thinking... as I really just want to use it as a music box... can I plug an MP3 player into the TAM's sound in jack and "play through"? Or will this destroy the sound hardware?
I DO plan on opening the TAM up now I have some pictures and instructions, but still a bit gutless at the moment to try...
    cheers
    cosmic

I dont have any way of putting any new software on the TAM until I can either get the SCSI system working again, or the PCI card... but I'm pretty sure I have some kind of sound app that will playthrough ok.
The issue that worried me was that I know I killed/damaged my LCIII's sound input capabilities by plugging a walkman in to its Sound In port to capture sounds... where it was only meant to be "Line In"... thus was worried of a similar problem here...
I know I used to hook my 3-disc changer Stereo into the TAM, but pretty sure it had line out ports that I used, not MIC/speaker jacks. The 3-disc is sadly no more.

  • Lock ups and sound looping!

I remember reading something here about people having trouble with their systems locking up and then getting a loud static noise then a sound loop when playing games.
I am getting this about 2-3 times a night now and it is driving me nuts, I do not have temp problems of any sort and I have all of the latest drivers for everything on my system.
      Any ideas?

  • My downloaded text sounds do not show up under the sounds tab in settings after installing 8.1.1. can someone help me please?

i downloaded a couple text tones and since installing 8.1.1, they will not show up under the sounds tab. in fact, they do not show up in my recent purchases on itunes, but when i go to buy them again, it says that i have already bought this tone. I just want to use the tones i paid for as the tones on my phone. not asking much.... thanks for the help. i hope someone can help me get the tones working. thank you.

This was happening to me too but only for some of my songs. I have a mac so I dunno about PCs, but for most of my ringtones I had to create an ACC version in itunes to make them short enough then turn that into a m4r and those all worked fine. But if the song was already short enough and I didn't create an ACC version and just turned the original into a m4r, then it wouldn't appear in my itunes.
so if you're on a mac:
    1. go to get info, options, pick when you want the song to start and end.
Has to be pretty short to work, 30 second or less is good
if it's already short enough that's fine
    2. right click and click 'create ACC version'
a copy with the length you put in will appear, drag that into a folder or whatever and just type in m4r where m4a would be
still make an ACC version even if it's the right length
    Hopefully this helps someone else.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Loading sound clips in my swing application

I have searched all the forums, din't find what i want.
I have many small sound files to be played in my application. Even on mouse Pressed, Drage etc etc....
Now I was looking for a better way of Loading the Sound files in memory as the application starts.....
If I use the Clip Interface of javax.sound and initilize them and open a stream, invoke the open() method, and store it in hashmap. So that when ever i need that file i will lookup for that clip and trigger the start() method which actually plays the sound. IS the approach the right approach, will not the Cip object keep the IO handle open, I have nearly 40 Clips to be loaded.
Can any one suggest me the better way of implementing this.
    TIA
    Zoha

As far as I know, there is no facility for detecting mouse scrolling wheel in JDK 1.3.
Check it in the later releases of JDK.
