No sound through built-in speakers

The only output device listed in System Preferences > Sound is Name: "Digital Out" ; Type: "Headphone port" and can't get sound  through the built-in speakers unless earphones are plugged in. How can I change this to the correct output device?

Go step by step and test.
1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
    Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2.Plug in and  remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
    Audio Devices window
    Side Bar
    Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

  • No sound through built-in speakers (dv7-1243cl)

There is no sound through the built in speakers. The mute button on the touchbar under the screen is lit up red but the icon on the screen shows that it is unmuted. Whenever I try to disengage the mute on the bar, the light stays red but the volume icon changes. I'm pretty sure that its muted through the touchbar, is there specific software to re-install the touchbar?

  • I cannot get sound through my laptop speakers ever since I used a digital speaker

I cannot get sound through my laptop speakers ever since I used an external digital speaker.  Cannot seem to switch back to lap top speakers in my SYSTEM PREFERENCES...only showing DIGITAL out put option

    Hi there Lutostan,
It sounds like you have disconnected the digital audio speakers from your MacBook Pro but all you have available in your audio settings. Take a look at this info from the following article named:
Troubleshooting issues with no audio from built-in speakers on Macs
If the Internal Speakers option does not appear in the Output tab and your computer is not a Mac Pro, check that Digital Out is present as in the image below:
Confirm again that all external audio devices and cables have been removed.
Check to see if a red light is lit in the line-out port. If so, your Apple computer may need service.
If you do not see a red light, proceed to step 5.
If the issues persist, contact Apple support for further troubleshooting assistance.

  • ITouch 2G playing sound through both external speakers and earphones

Have you tried another pair of earphones? It may be that the headphone jack is failing. You can, if you are competent, replace it yourself or get it fixed by a third-part place. See the following:

  • No sound only through built in speakers!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store to have it replaced, or take it back to where you bought it and exchange it.

  • No sound from built in speakers on iPhone 4

I had this problem once before and am not sure how I fixed it.  When I unplugged my earphones I no longer get sound via the built iin speakers.

Unfortunately I didn't. I took the time to make an appointment with the Genius Bar and was told (by an unusually smug tech) to go home, back up my data, then restart the phone with the power button and center button down.  If that didn't work to then Resotre as new through iTunes.  I had already done all that so it seems I will eventually have to get a new phone. I asked said agent before I jump and pay for a new (4S) phone if there was the iPhone 5 set tp debit.  He answered unequivacally that there wasn't.  Several days later there was a news story hinting that there was.  With all that said I will live with my phone that sometimes rings and sometimes doesn't for as long as I can and wait to see what story is correct.
If you haven't tried any of the above you should (it worked once for me several months ago).  Good luck.

  • Can't get sound through my big speakers

    Hello all,
I just hooked up my new Apple TV and all works fine BUT can't get any sound through my big floor speakers, only through the tinny TV speaker (Samsung 46" LED).
The big speakers are powered by an older Onkyo FM AM receiver with no optical digital audio port. I currently enjoy sound from these speakers when watching my Comcast cable stations or my DVD player, choosing respectfully between video 1 and video 2 ports on the receiver.
Question: Do I need a new receiver with an optical digital audio port, to be then connected to the Apple TV via this cable ?
My Comcast cable box has such a port. What would happen if I connected an optical digital audio cable from the Comcast box to my Apple TV ? Would the sound find its way into my big speakers while watching Netflix ? That's all I want.......
I don't have this darn cable now to try this.
    Thanks guys.

Hmmm....would that limitation be noticeable by average listeners ? I don't even know what 5.1 audio is.
5.1 is surround audio with L/R front, Center (mostly for speech), and L/R rear channels. You'd need 3 extra speakers for the additional channels.
The .1 refers to a subwoofer but if your main speakers produce good low frequency as it is it may not be needed as low frequencies tend to deliver less spatial information than mid/highs. If you wanted one it'd be an extra speaker.
You would notice the difference by virtue of having sounds spread around you rather than simple L/R on movies that support it (Dolby Digital 5.1). As your amp doesn't support this currently, you're not ging to miss anything going the stereo audio route for now.
I've had a 5.1 system (without the .1) for donkey's years, and yes it's fun/novel, but leads to more clutter in the room with leads extra speakers etc. In fact I've relocated my rear speakers some time ago and am just sticking with stereo for now.
Certainly worth looking into, but 5.1 is old hat anyway and more modern surround formats will utilise even more speakers for surround effects but AppleTV currently does not support these.
I'm running a pair of old tower Polk Audio speakers of my amp that vibrate the windows pretty good.
No reason you couldn't use these in a 5.1 or 5.0 system as main L/R speakers but you'd need new center and rear L/R speakers, cabling and amp +/- subwoofer.
Onkyo would still be a good bet for a quality reasonably priced amp though you'd probably find a myriad of options, possibly cheaper than your original Onkyo.

  • Cannot hear any sound through my external speakers - help!

I'm running 10.6.4 on my imac 27". Can hear sound though the internal speakers, but even when I plug externals in and restart I can't see any option in the sound system preferences to let me hear through the external speakers. It's odd. Can anyone help?

    More information will help.
Is this a problem that just started for you, or have you never been able to plug in headphones or external speakers and have them work?
Are you sure you are plugging into the correct jack on the computer? On my slightly older iMac I sometimes reach around to the back and hit the wrong jack.
When I open "Sound" in System Preferences and hit the "Output" tab, I see "Internal Speakers" listed. Then when I plug in my headphones the "Internal Speakers" automatically changes to "Headphones."
Is this what you see on your computer?
    Good luck.

  • Safari audio goes through built in speakers

I am using an Edirol FA-66 audio interface and the default audio output is set to this, however recently the audio from safari (and firefox if used) comes through my built in speakers (as does the bbc radio widget) and volume is not controllable with the mute button and volume controls on my keyboard, it is only controlable from the audio midi setup internal audio volume slider. All other apps (iTunes, logic, vlc etc. etc.) come out via my interface. Its obviously a hassle.
Any ideas as to what has caused this and how i can resolve the issue?

Most apps that have an equalizer tap into the digital stream and introduce a noticeable delay into the audio. If you need to keep some video in synch with the audio, then an app such as airfoil, which I use won't work. Just to let you know when you search.
Here are some that seem to fit your requirements

  • Getting Sprint Navigation sound through my Camry speakers

I have a Curve 8330 and a 2007 Toyota Camry with factroy bluetooth.  After I have connected the bluetooth, is there any way to get the sound from Sprint Navigation to play through my car speakers?  I did a Google search and thought I found something, but it didn't work.  It suggested unchecking the headset option for bluetooth on my phone.  I did that, but it still plays through the BB speaker.
    Anyone got any suggestions?

  • Sound through computer AND speakers

    Hi there!
Is it possible to play from iTunes either through the computer and the speakers connected in the AirPort iTunes Express simultaneoulsy? Or do you have to choose between listening in the computer or in the speakers in the station? How do we get it to play both? I have my computer in a room, and the airport in the living room, and all I wanted was sound everywhere...
    Regards
    CV

To play sound through both the Mac's speakers and the Airport Express at the same time, you need to use the application Airfoil.
There WILL be a noticeable delay between the sound output of the two sources.

  • No sound from built in speakers but headphones ok, pavilion dv6

    HI all,
Out of a sudden , after watching a youtube video, my speakers and headphone gave  noise when I was RE playing the video that I watched seconds ago.
I restarted my lap, and then didn't hear a sound at all
checked my drivers and updated them
the headphone is working fine. but when I unplug it I hear no sound from my built in speakers. though the drivers are working fine.
took my lap for maintenance to get it cleaned up and checked, they told me the speakers are connected and the wires are all fine! but the problem still exists.
they wanted me to leave it with them to be checked ... but I just didn't trust them since they suggested the sound card is damaged! if it was dagamed I don't think I'll be getting any sounds ! right ?
please, can any one tell me what could be the problem ? and how to solve it ?

running windows 8.1 for the past year

    Hi Chaand,
You can try installing this IDT High-Definition Audio driver, it is not for your model but it is a Windows 8.1 driver. There are no Windows 8.1 driver for your model. If installing that driver doesn't work then it is a most likely a hardware issue with the speakers and you should have either a local technician take a look at it or send it to HP for repairs. You can reach HP Total Care at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or start here if you live outside of North America.

  • No sound through earphones but speakers are fine

    Hi,
My dv6 Pavilion, OS Windows 7 64-bit,  has suddenly stopped recognising that I have earphones plugged in. I have tried many fixes suggested on the web, run several System Restores but nothing has worked. My Windows updates are current. The only recent change I have made is to reinstall my antivirus software (McAfee) as that decided to throw a wobbly last week and kept turning itself off!
When I right click on the speaker icon on the Task Bar, the Sounds box opens and SOMETIMES the Independent Dual Headphones shows up, greyed. Underneath it says unplugged and there is a downward pointing red arrow. If I right click this area, another box shows up and Test, Set as Default Device and Set as Default Communication Device are greyed (ie, I can't click on them). Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices are both checked. Disable is also shown in black ( I can click on this).
This laptop has already been back to HP repair for replacement hard drive, fans and power problems several times. I really can't afford to be without it again for another three weeks, so if anyone has any fixes that they care to share I would be very grateful!  I am by no means a techno-whiz, so if anybody can suggest a solution can they please provide 'an idiot's guide, how to...' !
    Many Thanks.
