just hooked up my apple tv. But audio is not playing through my TV but video is working fine. Apple TV connected to TV via HDMI. Can you help please

unless the appletv is set to mute or very low level that that could never happen
to trouble shoot then I would try with another tv to rule out issues with the tv
and if the same thing happned there then I would begin to suspect a defect appletv

Hi i upgraded from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am no longer getting sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever.Any one any ideas?
I use a samsung TV for my monitor via HDMI.Tried all the system Audi setting nothing .Head phone and internal speakers are fine.

Similar issue; Audio was working fine on Lion, now not on Mountain Lion. Have a Macbook Pro early 2011 with AMD Radeon HD 6750M, connected by thunderbolt through a Lacie LBD to a mini-displayport to HDMI adapter (n.b. same problem when not going through the LBD) to a Pioneer VSX 521 AV receiver. For me when I go into audio Midi settings all the volume sliders for the displayport device are greyed out and at zero. But when I click 'configure speakers', it's able to send out the test signals to each speaker. Part of the problem could be that I'm not getting the option to put out 6channel sound, only 2 or 8 channel. Since my system is Dolby 5.1, and I only have 6 speakers, I would have expected the 6ch option to be available. But I imagine there's more to it than that. Elsewhere someone has suggested playing with Remote Interactive over HD on an Onkyo device; I'll see if there's something similar on the Pioneer that can be changed. Any other suggestions welcome.

There is a nice an useful Toshiba FAQ about this issue!
[Unable to hear audio over an HDMI connection on a Qosmio G30 in Windows Vista|http://209.167.114.38/support/techsupport/tsbs/all/-TSB001400.htm]
I found it on the Toshiba Australian site.
    I would appreciate your feedback

  • Play Sound Through Display AND Connected Computer.

I bought and connected my new 27" LED Display to my 27" iMac today and would like to know if its possible to play sound through both the display AND the computer at the same time. I know to go into the sound settings in system preferences, however only the option is given to chose the sound output to come from either one or the other.
Is it possible to play the audio through both?
    Thanks in advance!

I downloaded this program with the provided link - after changing the settings as advised I began to get that loud static white noise like sound out of the iMac speakers (which apparently is a problem many people have experienced with their 27" i7 iMacs). As soon as I deleted the Audio Hijack program the speakers went back to normal. (Thank God!)
If anyone else has any suggestions as to how I can play sound through both the iMac and the display at the same time this would be great appreciated.
Thanks for trying to help though Malcom

  • Lenovo B570 isn't recognizing a monitor through a HDMI connection.

The title says it all really, every time I connect my B570 to my Benq monitor using a HDMI to DVI cable, the laptop fails to detect anything.
When I connect the laptop and screen using the VGA to VGA cable, the laptop picks up the screen without any trouble at all. I bought a new HDMI to DVI cable and the laptop is still failing to recognise the monitor.

    hi flytch
can you check if the cable works first? (you can use another computer to check it if you have)

  • Compaq 8510p HDMI connection to Plasma - no sound

I'm attempting to connect my Compaq 8510p to my Panasonic Plasma TV via HDMI cable and I'm getting video by no sound. I have rebooted the Laptop with the HDMI cable attached and that doesn't solve the problem.  I have a SoundMAX HD sound card and digital output is turned on.  Anyone have any ideas how to make this work?

After you hook up to the TV, go to Sound in the Control Panel.  You'll need to tell it to output your sound through the HDMI connection rather than your regular speakers through here.  I hope that helps!

  • No sound through HDMI cable after upgrading to Lion

After upgrading to lion I can not get any sound through my hdmi cable connected to the TV. It did work before. There is no optional source to choose under "Sound"  - only internal speakers. How can that be? Any suggestions what to do?

    You arent the only one.
I guess that is a thunderbolt bug and needs to be fixed by apple.

  • No sound through HDMI in Radeon 6870

    Hello People from Arch Community
I have a small problem getting sound out of the HDMI of my video card.
    When I do
    lspci | grep AMD
    I get:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Barts XT [ATI Radeon HD 6800 Series]
01:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Barts HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6800 Series]
So the kernel finds the device. But when I do
    aplay -l
    I get:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC887 Analog [ALC887 Analog]
    Subdevices: 0/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC887 Digital [ALC887 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 1: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I noticed that the HDMI out was listed as Audio Generic, when it should be identified as HDA ATI HDMI. Whenever I choose the HDMI output through alsamixer I only get a s/pdif and I cannot modify anything. I remember that some months before when I installed Arch for the first time sound through the HDMI was working and the audio device was correctly identified. Could it be a new module or kernel path that broke the audio?
I tried using the radeon.sound=1 flag but I still could not get sound out of the HDMI. Even worst, when I use the radeon.sound=1 parameter, my screen display a 5 pixel width purple line at the left border of the screen and the rest of the screen gets squeezed. It is not too bad but still makes text look blurry.
    Could someone help me please?
Extra info: it is not hardware related, sound works fine in windows
I am not a total beginner, I know my way in the CLI but still I lack a lot of knowledge.
Another tip, around the same time, my framebuffer decoration and splash(fbcondecor, fbsplah) stopped working, I don't know if it is related.

You may find this article >Here< to be of interest.  I don't know much about Radeon audio but for your 6870 that may seem to be of relevance.
Are you using the open-source driver or the proprietary with an older X.org?  With the above article, the open-source audio seems to be slated for kernel 3.5.

  • No sound through hdmi satellite a505-s6960

I have been having a problem with getting sound through my hdmi port. to a panasonic viera television 42" though it does play on my friends 52" panasonic viera.
it has worked on my television before but its not working lately for some reason. any tips would be great it doesnt play through the digital audio it usually played through panasonic viera in the sound playback options.

Hi man. I tried a lot of ways, I chaged controls, update software anda a lot of things, but here you have to do the next things. Conect HDMI port in both elements: TV an laptop. Try changing the conection between the elements with the bottons "Fn" + "F5"  in this case F5 is the funcion to change between LCD, LCD+HDMI, Monitor, etc. Do it three or six times to get the sound in your LCD. I hope this idea help you.

  • HT1338 no sound through hdmi after sleep mode

I have no sound through the hdmi cable after mac mini wakes up after sleep mode but I do have sound when I resart my mac although Im unable to ajust the volume and the sound icon at the top bar is greyed out..system preferences says the selected device has no output controls for this device and the slider bar it also greyed out..

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

  • HDMI CONNECTION

I just purchased a mac mini. Problem that I am having is that I am getting an image through the HDMI connection. I use a LCD tv as a monitor with a HDMI imput. It will work through the thunderbolt port with my mini display to vga adapter. Do I have to buy a new adapter to fix the issue. I assumed that this would work through the port with no issues.
Can someone help me on this?

I'm sorry, I mistyped... I do have a HDMI cable, and I connected it to my mac mini before turning it on for the first time and making sure that my LCD TV was on the right input and I did not get a signal at all. I have recently ordered a mini display to HDMI connector to to use with the thunderbolt port. It would not work with the HDMI cable connected directly to the computer and the tv.
I thought that Apple and Intel had corrected this problem.

The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. But check your TV manual to see if it has audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports.
If you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody or Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort rather than the Mini-DVI there is an adapter that uses the Mini DisplayPort and a USB port to combine video and audio to HDMI. It's only 2 channel stereo not 5.1 Dolby Surround.

The Mini-DVI port doen't carry audio at all. The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports.
To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.

  • Connecting MacBook to Sony Bravia KDL-40XBR9 - No sound through TV

I recently bought a Sony Bravia KDL-40XBR9. I have it hooked up to my MacBook using an HDMI to DVI connection. But, I'm not getting sound through the TV. So, I bought a 3.5mm to RCA (one red, one white connection) cable. I've plugged the red and white connections into all of the red/white ports on the back of the tv but I'm still not getting sound out of the tv.
Can someone please help me with this setup?
    Thanks!!

Does your Bravia also have red and white input jacks on the side of the TV (my Bravia does, on the left). On my Bravia, those are the only audio inputs that are active for all inputs, and they are what I use when I am playing my MB through HDMI (which, as you found, only transmits video).
