No sound using Isight

My son and I are using 2 I books w/ tiger and did video chats using SBC dsl., on his end. All worked fine except the picture quality. Now he installed an airport express and has switched over to Broadband. We use the ichat applications on both end....mac to mac.
Now, although the picture quality is superb, I cannot hear him throught the computer. He can hear me though. The Mic / camera settings are checked on both ends, He is able to E mail , get on line, but now no sound! This all happened after he installed the airport express to gain wireless capabilities.
Help!!
Thanks

Hello, Bmack. I am not certain I understand you question, but I will try to provide some suggestions you can consider.
DSL is broadband. If you mean that your son is using an Apple Airport Express (AE) to connect DSL broadband service for his Mac via a wireless connection, he should check to see whether his DSL modem is a combination modem/router. If it is, its default settings and those of the AE may result in BOTH devices acting as DHCP servers. iChat AV cannot deal with multiple DHCP servers.
The simplest fix is to remove the AE. Hopefully, iChat AV will then work properly for you two again.
If your connection works properly when his AE is disconnected, but your son want to continue to use a wireless connection, he should enable "Bridge" mode on his AE. His AE users guide will give him instructions on how to do this, but it will certainly involve disabling DHCP serving. Apple calls DHCP serving "Distribute IP addresses."
Depending upon which hardware and OS he is using, the process may be as simple as deselecting the Distribute IP addresses checkbox in the Network Tab of the AirPort Admin Utility software on his Mac.
If you determine that the above is NOT the problem, test with other users to determine which system is the source of your symptoms. Then consider suggestions applicable to that system from Help for iChat AV 3 Problems and How to get iChat AV working again.

  • Sound Issues using iSight

I am using iMovie 7.1.4 and when I try and record video & sound using the built in iSight camera, I get pictures but no sound.
I know the audio settings are correct in the System Preferences as I can record a voice-over using the built in mic. Thoughts / help anyone?
    Thanks in advance, Andrew

Sorry, that's my mistake... I changed the drop down menu on my OS (but forgot to change it on my next post). It is indeed 10.6.6.
However I've managed to sort the issue out with a bit more research (thanks to your post). The 'noise reduction' settings were turned right up in the Voiceover recording panel... which despite not affecting the 'voiceover' recordings as much, they had in turn effectively muted the mic during video recordings.
So I've turned them down and got sound back on both types of recordings.
    So thanks

  • Noise when using isight in Movie 08

I have substantial noise when using iSight in iMovie '08. Please see my example on Youtube Mirno63 labeled test. I would like to have my daughter practice for a recital using isight but the noise is so loud. Please help!
    Thanks
    Marian

    Hello, Marian (mirno)
If I am listening to the correct YouTube video, I think that at least some of the sound that is troubling you is background noise. Sookyas may also be right that feedback is causing your problem.
In either case, using an external Mic that is positioned closer to the voice you want to record than to your MBP should help you.
I use this Logitech USB Desktop Microphone when I want to get sound from a person who is not close to my Mac. My Logitech does a GREAT job on spoken words. Although it is not advertised as (and does not cost as much as) a music microphone, it gives better sound recordings than my laptop's built-in mic unless the voice being recorded is very close to my laptop. It certainly meets my singing and other amateur music needs. However, other brands should work, too.
Unless you can buy one from a trusted retailer who will give you full exchange or refund credit if a new microphone does not correct your problems, I suggest you take your wonderfully portable MBP with you when you shop, add any needed driver, and test the mic before you buy.
Here is how I would perform the test.
    • Leave "AudioMide" settings at default. (You should not need to change these settings when using iMovie except in extraordinary circumstances.)
    • Set your  > System Preferences > Sound > Input to use the new mic as your input device.
    • Extend the microphone's cable away from your MBP, and start recording.
    • Leave the computer where it is and physically move near the mic so your mouth is approximately half a meter from mic.
    • Sing or speak in a normal voice for a few seconds and then stop the recording.
    • Now change your System Sound Input preference back to user you MBP's built-in mic again.
    • Start recording again.
    • Leaving the MBP in place, move back to the same place where you tested the external mic.
    • Sing or speak again at about the same volume you did when using the external mic.
    • Stop the recording, and play back both recording so you can compare them.
This test should let you easily determine whether the external mic meets your needs.
If the noise is still there when recording from the external mic, there is most likely something wrong with your Mac. Contact Apple or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider.

  • Problems using iSight as a microphone

I am having problems using iSight as a microphone in applications such as Garage Band and Audiodia.
My iSight is connected correctly, the green light is on, the picture works if I look at it in iChat. I have used the Sound system control panel to set iSight as the input source. When I speak into the iSight the sound bars in the system control panel show that the iSight microphone is working.
When I use an application I ensure that other other applications are not running so that nobody else is using the iSight. Within the applications I also set iSight as the input source (Garage band doesn't give you the choice - I guess it refers to the system control panels).
Despite all of this, both Garage Band and Audiodia continue to take their input from the built in microphone of my Powerbook G4, instead of using the iSight.
    Why is this? Any tips?
    JAY.

    Hi Jay,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
iSight is designed to work with iChat AV. It is a GREAT mic for that use, and for use with Some Applications you can use with iSight.
I do not use GarageBand, but I have a chat friend who does. He tells me that iSight does not work successfully with GarageBand. I think I recall that iSight runs at 48Mhz, but GB expects a 44.1Mhz source that can match its Midi input.
Logitech USB Desktop Microphone works with GB, as will many others from many sources.
For more info, you will get better help with GarageBand than I can give at GarageBand Discussions. The GB users will be watching there.

  • How can i use isight camera to broadcast to web with Mac OS 10.4?

I am using an iBook G4 running OS 10.4 as a printer server.  I have to do this to be able to print on my HP DeskJet 882c printer from computers running OS 10.6 and above (although I have not been able to get it to work with 10.8).
I can connect an iSight camera to the iBook via FireWire.  Can I set that up to broadcast a video feed to a web site so I can visually monitor the area near the laptop and printer?

jrmnewtonma wrote: How can i use isight camera to broadcast to web with Mac OS 10.4?
You could use compatible older versions of QuickTime professional extensions for your Mac OS X version.
This professional quality software is very powerful, and it will certainly stream any video you need.  However, it is not simple to use, so be prepared to do some research and study to get it configured and working.
To use your iBook with its OS X 10.4, you will need QuickTime Broadcaster 1.5.3
and Darwin Streaming Server (v5.5.5) (if you need streaming server functions.)
Although I have never used it, QuickTime Streaming Server 4.1.1 might be a useable substitute for Darwin.

I think I have done something wrong. I used my Apogee Jam on a guitar project with several audio tracks in Logic Pro 9. And while the Apogee Jam still was connected, I switched to another project with only instrument tracks (synths). I forgot to change the "Built In Input". After I did this, my guitar sounds like crap when I try to use Apogee Jam in the same guitar project, or also if I create a new project. I use Guitar Rig 5 (Native Instruments) as my guitar plug-in. But the guitar sounds strange even if I don´t assign Guitar Rig.
    Can somebody help me?

  • Can't record sound using the jack in/out on macbook pro 13 os x

    hi
i bought a new macbook pro 13' intel core i5 4gb with the latest os x version 10.8.2. mainly for sound and video editing
yesterday i tried to record sound using garage band and through the mini jack port. once i connected an mp3 player to the mini jack port, the sound prefrences window recognized it as headphones and not as input jack as it did on my friend's same mac with leopard os on it.
it seems like no matter what i try to do (changing instument set up on garage band, restarting the computer with the jack in or out etc...) nothing worked
i bought this mac just so i wouldn't have to deal with these kind of problems....suppose to be a very user friendly os and hardwear.
very dissapointing. please if any one has a clue what can be done?

i'm aware of my other audio interface options, but i would expact this machine to have the basic options every 20 year old pc has, a simple plug and play difault to get audio into my computer. i bought it at b and h in NY and in their specs it says that it's a 'combo kack' - meaning both in and out analog audio ports. after cheaking mac's site it says only headphones.
also tryied to connect a digidesign mini mbox2, through the usb port, and i had to unplug it, shut down the mbp, restart it again etc.. and it also doesn't always work propely and makes all kinds of digital error sounds.
although in this case i can't that the mbox is not damaged.
over all it's very dissapointing. it's my first mac and i figured it would be a much more idiot proof, user freindly work tool.
if you got any other tips i'd appreciate that
thanx alot for the focusrite link

  • No sound using stereo mixer with speaker balance s...

No sound using stereo mixer with speaker balance set between approx 95-100% of max to the right
Setup: good quality functional soundcard, fine when audio not routed via Skype, mixer enabled, Skype mic / audio auto disabled, issue present when tested using a variety of different systems, latest version of Skype was used on all machines being tested
Issue: When the speaker balance is set approx 95% to 100% to the right speaker channel using the Windows audio control no sound is generated. The issue is absent when audio is not routed via Skype. This would seem to be a Skype bug and would like to report the issue as a bug. Has anyone else encoutered this issue? Is there a resolution?

  • No sound using optic SP

    Hi,
I have successfully installed the creative X-FI Xtreame on my PC. However i have problems hearing sound using the following configuration:
I am connecting an optic SPDIF cable to SPDIF out connection at the back of an HD DVD (Neo Neo) the other side of the cable is connected to the optic in connection at the creative panel.
I am using a 2. speaker system (which I am not sure if they are digital or analogue, although i am pretty sure they are analogue) and they are connected to "line out" connection at the creative sound card at the back of the PC.
When I play a DVD movie I cannot hear any sound.
When i tried the same using the AUX input it was ok.
    Can you please help?
    Regards,

  • No sound using internal speakers, but I have sound using headphones

I just finished installing archlinux with GNOME3 on a laptop, everything were perfect until I detected a problem: I only have sound using headphones, the internal speakers of the computer doesn't work. I followed the official wiki step by step and I never had this problem using other linux distributions.
    Any idea?

I'm having the very same issue. Each time I boot computer I have to unmute the speaker in order to have sound. Only the headphones are unmuted by default. From what I understand alsa-store and alsa-restore are supposed to run automatically on boot and shutdown only (normally they appear in inactive/dead state).
I have tried to run 'alsactl store', but this won't help.
The whole thing start happening only recently (late December). I have arch on this laptop for over 3 years and it was fine as far as I remember.
    EDIT:
I have just found that this issue is due to pulseaudio 2.1 -> 3.0 upgrade. After downgrading to 2.1 it works as expected.
    EDIT2:
Maybe you will find that useful, a temporary "fix". I have added to startup applications (in my case in gnome-session-properties):
    amixer -c 0 sset Speaker Playback 95%
which just simply sets the speaker volume to 95% each time I log in.

  • Is it necessary to subscribe to .Mac to use iSight?

Curious if one needs to subscribe to .Mac to be able to use iSight? I guess I don't fully understand how.Mac works.
    Thanks for the help.
    Chris

Hello, Christopher.Curious if one needs to subscribe to .Mac to be able to use iSight?Nope.  You will find some more info on Using iSight here.
For more info about dot Mac's features, click the dot Mac tab at the top of this page. ONE of dot Mac's uses is that your dot Mac account name will work as your account name for iChat AV.
You can use dot Mac's Free Trial offer to get a free dot Mac account name. The Free Trial also lets you try out all of dot Mac's features to determine whether you want to pay to keep using them after the Free Trial period expires.
One reason that some people choose to use a paid dot Mac account is that iChat AV 3 offers encrypted chat between two paid dot Mac accounts for increased chat security.
Even if you ultimately choose not to pay for a dot Mac account, the dot Mac name you choose will continue to work as an iChat AV account name after the trial period has expired and dot Mac's many other features stop working.
Alternatively, if you do not want to try dot Mac, you can get a AIM Name here. You do not need to use AOL to use AIM. An AIM name is all that is necessary.
Either an AIM name or a dot Mac name will work fine as your iChat AV account ("buddy") name. In practice, an AIM name or a dot Mac name work interchangeably. However, when you add a new name to your "Buddy List" you must use the choices bar to indicate whether the name is an AIM name or a dot Mac name. Once the buddy names are entered, however, they work alike.
If you want more information on the iChat AV setup process, I recommend Ryan's iChat AV 3 Setup Pages.
There is more info on Using iSight with iChat AV here.

  • Is it possible to use iSight with Messenger for Mac?

I have been racking my brain on how to get iSight to work with my friends on Window messenger. The video option is not available. I've had my macbook for 2 months now and, after working/giving up and going back again cannot seem to get it to jive. Any ideas would be appreciated!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, flowerlove
The answer here will depend on the specifics of what you want to do.
Both Microsoft Messenger for Mac and the older MSN Messenger for Mac are text only apps. You can not use iSight with either. Please let us know if you mean some different "Messenger" software.
This Windows Messenger does not appear to offer video, even for PCs. If this is the application your friends are using, no video work with it.
For a built-in iSight video connection with PC contacts who only connect via Windows Live Messenger or other clients of the MSN Messenger server, you can select from these alternatives:
    (1) Because your MacBook can use Boot Camp or Parallels to run Windows XP software on your MacBook, you can choose which method you want to use, add the required software (if you have not already done so), and then install and use the same Windows instant messenger application that your contacts are using to do video.
    (2) and (3) In addition to Niel's good "aMSN" suggestion, you can also try Mercury Messenger for Mac. Either can work with OS X for video and text chat. They offer the same features, but neither offers audio connections.  Use whichever one of these two you find more reliable or easiest to use if you do not want to add Windows XP to your iNtel Mac,.
