No sound when iTunes continues to play

06-May-2007 08:07 AM Erin Dalzell:
I have a Summer 2001 iMac with 768M of RAM running OSX 10.4.9 with all the updates applied. I have an Airport Express with FW 6.3 (the latest).
When I play the music through two outputs (local iMac speakers and APX attached speakers), no sound is heard occasionally.
It happens when moving from one song to another. iTunes is still playing when this happens, just no sound is heard out of either set of speakers.
To resolve it, I can pause the music, then start it again. But it will stop laster when changing songs again.
If I only play music through one output (either local speaker OR APX), then this problem doesn't occur.
It also doesn't occur on my MacBook when remotely access the iMac's iTunes library.
I have filed rdar://problem/5184218 for this issue, but I thought I would check this forum for ideas as well.

I'm having the same identical problem. Thanks for describing it! The only thing that I is different for me is that it will happen when only 1 set of speakers is checked on. Has anyone been able to help you figure this out? What strange about this is the randomness in which it occurs.

Do you have backups of all the data on the startup drive? If not, do nothing else until you've backed up that data, if you still can.

  • HT4993 I cannot hear any sounds when I try to play any music, please help.

I cannot hear any sounds when I try to play any music.

  • My mac book pro has no sound when i try to play music in iTunes

When I try to play music in iTunes, either from my library or the iTunes store there is no sound. Anywhere else the sound is fine. This just happens in tunes. Any suggestions?

Thank you so much - that was the problem. We just got apple TV and that was device selected. Once I changed the selection to the macbook, problem solved.
I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my plea for help.

  • Muting System Sounds When iTunes is Playing?

Is there something I can do to mute the system sounds of OS X while playing music in iTunes? For example, I was playing music and deleted a file on the desktop at the same time and the trash can sound was heard with the music. Sometimes I use iTunes when I'm DJing and that kind of noise is not desirable! (Thank goodness I'm not on Windows which makes a sound for every **** event there is!)
    Thanks.

Unfortunately that software will not work since I'm on a laptop using the headphone output. Note the "known issues" in the installer:
    *Known Issues
*
-It is not possible to distinguish between the built-in speaker (on the front of the machine) and the headphone jack(s) on any macintosh. Likewise, the S/PDIF jack and the speaker and headphone jack on the PowerMac G5 can't be differentiated. Unfortunately, this is a hardware issue as these outpust share one audio line.

-Detour is not able to directly adjust Mail.app (OS X 10.3 and up) or iChat (10.4 and up). These applications now direct their audio through the System Alerts audio output, adjustable in the Devices tab as well as the Sound System Preference.
-Some apps, such as VLC, have their own volume and output controls which may override Detour's settings.

    Thanks anyways.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Why does MainStage silence all instrument sounds when I hit the play button?

I want to be able to be playing a pad or keyboard sound through an instrument channel strip that doesn't get cut off when I hit the play button to playback loops and sounds I have for songs.

    Hi
The "Play" button resets the audio engine. Better to leave that running and use some other control mapped directly to the Playback Plugins

  • No sound when I try to play iTunes

help ,baffling . the ringer or volume has vanished . my phone rings but will not play songs

I've seen this before.  The iPhone seems to think it is on a dock or plugged into speakers.  Try cleaning out the USB port on the bottom of the iPhone with a small needle or paper clip removing any lint or dirt.  Make sure to be gentle.  Then restart your iPhone by holding down the "power" button on top and the "home" button at the same time for 10 seconds.
If that doesn't fix it, try putting the iPhone on a dock or speaker system that uses the USB connector and then removing it.
If that doesn't work you could try backing up your iPhone in iTunes and then restoring it.

  • When I convert my Videos to iPod there is no sound when I try to play them.

    Help Please,
I have some music videos in iTunes and I have hit the advanced button and converted the selection to iPod. It converts them so that I can put them on my iPod but there is no sound at all when the video plays on my iPod. When I do this procedure to convert the video on iTunes it pops up another copy of the video on the iTunes movie section which I am assuming is the converted video. If I click on the original video on iTunes the video will play and I hear the music. If I click on the converted version that goes to my iPod I see the video but hear no sound. I hope you guys have some help for me.
    Thanks in advance.

Quicktime or Quicktime Pro (which iTunes uses) don't convert "muxed" ( muxed means multiplexed where the audio and video are stored on the same track) video files properly. It only plays the video and not the audio.
See:iPod plays video but not audio.
You need a 3rd party converter to convert the file with both audio and video.
See this for help: Guide to converting video for iPod (Mac/Windows).

  • I get no sound in iTunes.  Files, 'play,' but don't?

Music and Videos "play" but there's just no sound.  The files will work on my iPad.  Drivers, etc up to date. I fear it's something so simple as to be stupid.  File associations or some such.
I've scoured the related threads to no avail.
I can hear sound if I go in and fiddle to play a digital movie copy using the HP Media Smart Player, or Windows Media Player.

    Hi Bourne23,
Does the issue persist after updating iTunes?
Download and install the new iTunes version 8.1.1, which was released today.

    Hello Budgets,
I would be concerned too if there was no audio coming from the speakers on my iPad.  I found an article with steps to troubleshoot audio issue.  The title of the article says iPhone, but most of the steps are still relevant to the iPad.  You can skip any steps that apply only to the iPhone:

I can't get quicktime to play sound when I try to play videos that are mpeg files. I already downloaded mpeg-2 playback as well as Perian 1.0 but it still won't play sound. Any suggestions?

    Solution
    1. Open Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilities/), then check the Audio Output setting.
    2. Change the Audio Output setting to 44100.0 Hz.
    3. Quit Audio MIDI Setup.
KB article - No sound from some applications, but system alert sounds play (Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4)
Another trick: If you have GarageBand installed, open it (maybe open a GarageBand document) and then quit out of the application.
