No sound when previewing my projects in imovie

on my mac 10.6.8 My imovie project suddenly has no sound when I preview it, I also did a few voice overs and they do not play and there is a yellow warning exlamation point on them...they suddenly appeared. I didnt change anything, this just suddenly happened

I have three movies digitally downloaded through iTunes. While using my MacBook Pro, when playing the movies through iTunes, if the picture is small I have sound, but as soon as I expand the picture to full screen I lose all sound. I have tried the toggle and made sure my volume is up on my computer and that mute is off. It used to play on full screen, but not any more. I don't know if this is due to the latest iTunes update or if I am doing something wrong. It's just odd that it plays as a small picture, but not in full screen mode. Please advise.

I get no sound when I am PREVIEWING a VHS tape running through my new ADVC300. When I go to import a clip off the VHS tape, again I have no sound. However when I play that same clip in the Event Library, it plays just fine WITH SOUND.
I am open to suggestions.

That is normal with iMovie 08 - 11.
For making a DVD from a VHS tape, I use iMovie 06, an ADVC300 and iDVD 11.
There is a regresssion in quality of the image between iMovie 06 and iMovie 08 through 11.
The difference is the single field processing used by iMovie 11 (for faster editing) and the fact that it throws out every other horizontal line.
Final Cut Express and Adobe Premiere Elements 9 will give full quality but are more complicated to use.
Your workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels, aspect ratio, and original quality.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 is a 100% "lossless" combination and my DVD's look like they came from Hollywood!

No sound when previewing music or movies in Finder

Hello everybody,
I recently had my hard drive crash and had to get a replacement drive, reinstall windows, and migrate my backup clone back to the hard drive. Everything is running fine, except for some reason I can't hear any sound, or see any video when previewing movies or mp3s in preview. The time marker moves to the right, but there is no sound or video. Sound works in itunes and in Quick time, but not in the preview? Any suggestions?

OK, i was so used to resinstalling windows that I referred to OSX as windows in my original post. Please forgive me!

Can you preview your project in iMovie in full screen?

How do you preview your iMovie project in full screen in the new iMovie app for Mac?
In the old version you could just click the "play" button to watch the project in full screen, but I don't see that option anymore.

Just to the right of the playback controls that appear in the bottom of the viewer window when you mouse over them is the full screen button. Kind of a double arrow thing.
Shift-command F will do the same thing.

i loaded my video clips into iPhoto. when i watch the clips in Quicktime from iPhoto they have sound....but when i put the clips into the iMovie the sound is gone....i cant find what is going wrong...

Try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the video to DV.

I downloaded a mini-DV to iMovie and the video transferred without any audio. Could it have anything to do with a pop-up that said my "Start up disk was almost full? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There should be a minimum of 25GB free on start-up hard disk.

No Sound When Playing Back from Timeline

IIn Captivate 5, I have text to speech waveform showing in the timeline but no sound when previewing.
Soud does play in audio edit mode or when published. Makes it difficult to adjust timing.
What am I missing?

My own guess is that you clicked the speaker icon in the Timeline to mute audio. If that's the case, click the icon to toggle the state.

Imovie'09 crashes when full screen preview of project

Hello,
When I try to preview a project that I made in full screen, the application crashes. Is this a problem with the application or the OS?

@thomasfrommaitiand -- are you referring to the projects when you say left side of my screen?
I will share my findings.
I cleared my issue basing on inputs that I received from this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3343087?start=0&tstart=0
Basically, I had to duplicate my project so that I do not loose my original version and then started deleting each clip, audio overlays, transitions from the project one by one. I had photos interlaced in my project along with the video and some audio clip overlaying the video.
Luckily about 1 minute int the project, I identified that a Title slide that I had inserted into the project was causing the full screen to crash. Once I deleted that 1 slide, I was able to run my project in full screen without any issues. It is quite cumbersome and manual especially if you have multiple pieces in your project. However, you are desperate to have your project working like mine, this is the only best solution that I could garner. However, I also followed the instructions from the above mentioned thread posted by "elikness" and deleted the imovie.plist. That didnt really help but I followed those instructions too.

My iMovie project has sound, but no sound when burned in iDVD

I created a movie in iMovie then burned the disc in iDVD. The sound is good when I play the project in iMovie, but after I burned the disc in iDVD I cannot hear any sound. What should I do?

The following info was obtained from the Apple knowledge base:
Delete encoded assets from the project.
Burn another disc or Save as Disc Image, mount the image and test in DVD Player and then burn your DVD with Disk Utility.
This issue can also occur if third-party (non-Apple) QuickTime plug-ins are installed. If the issue still occurs after trying the steps above, check for third-party plug-ins in ~/Library/QuickTime/ and /Library/QuickTime. Move these to the desktop, and then log out and log back in to the computer

Sound problems with film made in iMovie when burned to DVD in iDVD

PLEASE HELP!!!
I have upgraded to iLife 09 and for all the bad that people have to say, I actually like it a lot. Anyway, it gave me the encouragement I needed to play with some old home movies I had stored with the aim of producing DVDs to give to my friends, and hopefully showing off the slick production values I have come up with.
So after spending a week getting to grips with iMovie and editing an old holiday film with all the cuts, transitions, chapter markers and music etc that I wanted, I ended up with an hour long movie that I was happy with.
Then to iDVD. After trying out all sorts of ways to go from iMovie to iDVD to ensure the best quality, I have finally given up trying to replicate the on screen quality of the movie in iMovie with the finished DVD, and just opted for the easy to use 'share to iDVD' option. The quality is not great, but then the footage is old anyway so not too much of an issue.
Then I spend another few days playing with and learning iDVD and again end up with a finished product that I am happy with, with nice looking menu's and a slideshow etc.
So I come to burn the final DVD, for which I pick the 'Professional burn' option which takes 4 hours but I am happy to wait if it means the best quality possible, and my DVD is done.
I then play the DVD to discover my problem - the sound in the movie is not right. To explain further, in my movie I have reduced the sound of some of the film clips to nothing and placed music over the top. When played and previewed in iMovie it works fine - the music plays and the sound that is attached the the video does not. When previewed in iDVD it works fine - just as I had edited it in iMovie. But then when I burn the DVD, some of these sounds are present again which completely wastes all my hard work at the editing stage.
I have searched and searched for help on this but am unable to find any.
Sorry for the very long description and story behind my issue, but it is massively frustrating. Basically, at some point during the 'burn to DVD' stage in iDVD it decides to completely ignore most of the sound edits I have made on the movie in iMovie.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks. Looking at that thread it looks like there are a few others having the same issue as me. Might be to do with not using the predetermined rates for clip slowdown and inputting my own.
The frustrating thing is that I have only done this once right at the start of my hour long movie and if I change it now it with though the timing of my whole film out.
Not much else I can do though I suppose.

I fixed the problem.. but it was very, very strange. I had a very long section for credits and set the line spacing to 1.0.. for some reason this caused it. I removed it, and it worked fine. I put it back, and I couldn't preview or play the video.
I don't know why that could cause that big of a problem, but it did..

After phone support from apple I ended up creating a new project and adding all 117 clips back in individually till I found out what clips flagged and would not allow me to export. I had 3 I deleted and replaced and everything works now 1hr after tedious work....

HT4792 when i try to import the project into imovie from the desktopk, the project is in faded letters and it can't be clicked on. I've tried this 5 different times with no success

I followed the steps to import an imovie project from my iphone to imovie on my mac. However, when I open Imovie and select file, import, movies HD project, and then go to my desktop (to where i moved the project out of itunes) - I can find my project but it is in faded lettering - so it cannot be selected to be imported. Ive tried this 5 times to no avail. HELP!

It sounds like you are clicking the wrong selection in step 8 which says...
Open iMovie on your Mac, and choose File > Import > iMovie for iOS Project.
Choose iMovie for iOS Project, not iMovie HD Project. iMovie HD is an obsolete version of iMovie from 2006.

I'm not sure what you mean by iMovie 10 (there is no such version). However, if you mean iMovie '09 (version 8) or iMovie '11 (version 9) there is a fix I can suggest.
If you have used slow motion or fast motion in your video, you MUST use only the presets on the speed slider, which are: 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 100%, 200%, 400% and 800%.
If you have used custom settings by manually entering speed percentages (different to the presets), you will almost certainly experience audio glitches in the exported movie. These glitches are not evident in preview (before sharing) but appear only in the exported movie (as you have experienced).
The fix is to re-visit your project and adjust all speed changes to the preferred preset percentage. This can be a pain, as you may have to re-sync video and audio - but it is the only fix (unless you want to go through a very convoluted process). After adjusting the speeds to the presets, you will of course have to re-export the project.
Note that the glitch is well known in iMovie '09, but may have been fixed in iMovie '11. Which version are you using?

When you move or copy the compound clips with their events into an external drive all the events should be there. Not clear on why you want to move them into a single event. You can drag and drop from one event to another.
Why are you using compound clips? You can simply copy the project from each machine with used media onto the external drive and that should do it.
