No sound with ATV 2.

Question

I'm getting ZERO sound though my new Denon AVR2311CI receiver. Using HDMI or the Optical audio link. I've switched the audio properties on both the ATV and the Receiver to every permutation and combination, but with no luck. It seems as if other people are having similar issues, but not like this.
Video looks great, just no sound. Is anyone else having this problem?

I was having similar issues with no audio on my home theater system.
My A/V processor is an Anthem AVM50v.
Here is what I have done, and it seems to be working now:
I connected the Apple TV to my AVM50v with HDMI & Optical.
Then I went into the settings for the AVM50v and set it to use video from the HDMI and audio from the Optical cable. Then I had to set the default audio output formats for the AVM50v. Basically, I told the AVM50v to default to either Stereo sound for 2 channel signals, or Dolby Digital for 5.1 channel signals. I disabled all other formats like DTS and Dolby TrueHD. (Lucky for me, the AVM50v allows these defaults to be controlled for each input. So I can still use DTS or DolbyTHD with my BluRay player)
Then under Apple TV audio settings I set Dolby Digital to "On."
My audio is now working. I am not certain of this, but my theory is that my A/V processor was trying to play the audio from the Apple TV in the wrong format. (example, I was trying to play music from my iTunes which was a 2 channel signal, but the processor was trying to play it with Dolby) The result was no sound. But now I have told the processor to not use Dolby with 2 channel signals on the Apple TV input, and it seems to be fixed.
Of course, I realize you have a different brand of preamp... so you might not have the exact same settings available. But I would think there must be some similar setting for default audio output format?
