No sound with DVI
Set up ATV today...great picture, no sound. Old SONY HDTV, had to go from HDMI to DVI. What do I need to do to get sound? Can I somehow hook up through my Motorola TWcable box? Would wireless speakers work? Not looking for a new TV.
Thanks for any input.
This is what I used
http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Audio-Analog-Converter/dp/B0013LWK3A
Also, try this site
http://www.kvm-switches-online.com/gefen-adapters.html
Do a goggle search for the Gefen converter. It worked great to convert optical out to RCA component (red and white.
Thanks.

My computer is connected to my TV. I had sound from the TVspeakers through an HDMI-DVI cable on my HP Pavillion with Win 7 64k before. After format, no more sound. Help me!!!
Many of the TVs understand this issue and support the audio thru another port. In my 26" Philips HDTV, I have to select audio input for HDMI port thru AV input or HDMI. If I select AV, then the audio jack from the mac mini needs to be connected to the AV1 input of my TV. So, I purchased a 3.5mm Stereo to Stereo RCA Jack cable and connected the headphone output of mac mini to my TV and voila, I had the audio playing back thru my TV. Other TV brands may have similar implementation, while some may not support computer input at all (this feature is called computer input by Philips).

Hello Everybody,
I want to use a dvi to hdmi cable to transfer graphic and sound via dvi to the tv. Is this possible?
I allready installed realtek high def. audio driver and amd catalyst software suite but no sound over dvi, only over system speaker.
Any idea ?
Regards, feberg
Solved!
Go to Solution.this is not possible with the integrated GPU. There are certain Nvidia graphics card that allows you to do this. But none of the Lenovo shipped Nvidia graphics card has this ability.

When connected to TV with MacBook to watch photos, how do we get the sound with it?
First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports. Each would take a different adapter to connect with the TV.
If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI or Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo sound system if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
If you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody or Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort rather than the Mini-DVI there is an adapter that can combine video and audio to HDMI.

How to connect my Mac Air 13" to my Philips display with DVI and VGA ports?
How to connect my Mac Air 13" to my Philips display with DVI and VGA ports?
Use a DVI to micro-DVI adapter if you're on an original MacBook Air, and a Mini DisplayPort adapter for a newer one.

How can I connect a laptop with DVI to an Apple LED Cinema Display 27"
I have an old Mac Book Pro 2007 and a PC laptop, both with DVI.
I simply can't find a DVI to mini display adapter.
Can this be true?Be careful. Make sure your laptop's DVI output is a dual-link DVI output. Otherwise it won't work correctly with the 27" through any adapter.

Clear enclosure 23" cinema display with DVi connector?
Hi all,
I went to a local Mac store (Not Apple) where I was shown a supposedly 23" HD cinema display (clear enclosure) with a DVI CONNECTOR directly built in. I was under the impression that all clear enclosure versions natively came with the ADC connector and that if DVI was warranted, a converted was necessary. To my surprise, Apple apparently made two clear enclosure versions, both ADC and DVI. I've verified under the spec. area of this site. But, there were no 23" clear enclosure with DVI, except of course, the current 23 version which is the aluminum. So, was the more likely scenario that this rep. had shown me a 22 with DVI or is there really a 23 version with DVI. I was convinced at the time myself that it was a 23 clear enclosure version with a DVI connector. I saw with my own eyes that this display did not have a converter connected and it looked like the 23 as opposed to a 22. The 22 & 23 looks so similar and can be mistaken for each other. One of the ways of identifying readily is that the 22 has the power/brightness controls near the bottom right of the casing. Could someone confirm either way. Thanks!Hi-
I agree that the rep probably showed you a 22" DVI model. See page 8 of the 22" Cinema Display Manual for the cabling of the display.
You will see the DVI version of the Cinema Display listed in this article. The article was put out prior to the Aluminum housed ACD release. -
Apple Cinema Display with DVI to VGA graphic adapter... HELP
A friend of mine has a PC (Windows XP based) and is using the Apple Cinema Display. Since his graphic card has both vga and dvi slot, he can plug the monitor to DVI and got it working, but when he tried to plug it into the VGA slot using DVI to VGA converter, it did not work. Is there a need of special converter or adapter?
Hi royz86,
To run a DVI display off a VGA output, you need a rather expensive converter box. These converters vary in performance, reliablility and application possibilities and certainly don't compare with using a native DVI output.
Your friend was probably trying to use a DVI to VGA adaptor (which won't work "the other way around"). It works by grabbing the analogue signal that is included in a DVI-I output and setting up a VGA output that way. These don't work with DVI-D outputs, by the way.
Cheers!

I am trying to connect my Macbook pro 2010 to my Samsung HDTV using a mini display port to hdtv cable. Trying to play a slide show in IPhoto but I only get sound with no picture. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I keep saying this over and over, in the hope that people who do a search will find it. Apple cannot possibly test for or be reponsible for the bazillion combinations of adapter, cables, and TV's out there. The only monitors that are 100% guaranteed to work with the MacBook Pro are the Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays, because, they're made by Apple. They're expensive, but they work perfectly.
My guess is that you bought a cheap MDP to HDMI cable, or have a defective one. From my reading of these boards over the past few months, cheap cables have a high failure rate. And the regular priced ones have only a slightly less of one. Try a new one. Make sure you do not damage the Thunderbolt port. -
Cinema Display (clear) with DVI/ADC box doesn't work with MacBook Pro
Cinema Display (clear) with DVI/ADC box doesn't work with MacBook Pro when plugged in with a dvi to mini dvi cable. Any ideas what to do to make it work? I lugged the 23" 2500 miles into the wilderness and I need help
Okay, here's an update: the DVI to ADC adapter does work with the Apple displays that I have tried, but it won't work with the Formac. I have tried multiple time to contact them, but to no avail... they don't even respond to threats of posting my opinion of them, which is this:
DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM FORMAC! They make quality products, but their customer service is a big time joke! They won't take care of you. -
My iPad does not have sound when on the Internet, including YouTube, but does have sound with iTunes and other apps. How can I correct this?
If you are sure that you have sound in other apps - and if you can still hear keyboard clicks and get notifications, then system sounds are not muted. Try this and see if it works.
Close all apps completely and reboot the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up. -
Can I use a 2009 iMac as external display for 2007 macbook pro with DVI port only
I have a late 2009 imac with minidisplay port and a 2007 macbook pro with DVI port. I connected a mini diaplay port to DVI cable but all I get on the imac is a blank screen when I press F2. Can I use the imac this way?
I'm not sure if it works with DVI but your late 2009 must be a 27". Try Command-F2 or Copmmand-Fn-F2

[SOLVED]No Sound with ALSA - Intel Corporation 82801G HD Audio
Hey all,
I've succesfully installed Arch Linux. My past two attempts have met with failure, all because of my own failure to read and follow directions correctly. This time everything is installed correctly. I am running Kdemod3 on my laptop with Arch and everything works great. I LOVE Pacman and the simplicity of Arch's configuration files. It's super fast and all together simple. My only remaining problem is this:
My sound with ALSA is not functioning. I followed the installation instructions at the arch wiki and after unmuting all of my channels I still would not get any sound. My sound module is snd_hda_intel and it is detected, loaded and the whole nine yards (as far as I can tell). My user is a member of the 'audio' user group also. I looked at the troubleshooting tips on the bottom of the Wiki but decided not to try them as they do not seem to pertain to my card (snd_hda_intel) but I will try them if anyone would like me to.
If anyone has any ideas, they'd be greatly appreciated!:D Anything I can provide that you need I will be more than willing to provide.
Thanks for such a great distribution,
Dan
