No sound with either headphones or internal speakers

I have no sound suddenly, with Itunes or CDs. Nothing from the headphones or the internal speakers. Mute is not on and Internal Speakers is selected for use of internal speakers. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi Nancy-
I have a 17" G4 1.5MHz aluminum PowerBook, 10.4.8, with no audio, too. Volume = max, System Prefs sound-in = internal mic, out = internal spkrs. Microphone shows no input. Connecting an iMic (w/external microphone) via USB causes sound-in pane to recognize the USB device, and both line-in and internal mic show a very regular pulse (about 1-2 per second) but no sign of any real audio from mic. Disconnecting the USB device, closing then reopening System Prefs sound pane, causes pulse to disappear.
Tried all the usual suspects: Zap PRAM, reset PMU, different login, even tried the Garage Band classical piano trick (play a few notes, audio might return), but nothing worked.
Machine was purchased in '04, well out of warranty. I found the sound board's flex cable had somehow popped loose; reseating that flex cable (next to hard drive) solved all audio issues since the sound card was essentially disconnected. (Taping it down might be a good idea.) Of course, this requires opening the machine.....
Connector might have been jarred loose from rough handling, I dunno. Might be worth checking.

  • When external speakers are plugged in to headphone jack, sound randomly goes back to internal speakers or digital audio setting, then back again

I have an essentially new MacBook Pro with Lion and all updates applied, and am wondering if this is a hardware or software problem.  Essentially with something plugged into the headphone jack, things work as they are supposed to for a while, then the sound will switch back to internal speakers, or sometimes 'digital out' (I can watch it change in the system settings), and then often switch back.  It doesn't seem to follow any sort of pattern or be related to any specific application that could be open, and happens with different sources of audio (iTunes, streaming from the web), and different external speakers or headphones plugged in.

Sounds hardware related. If it's brand new, and you're still under warranty I would have it checked out.
I have not experienced this on my computer.
As I understand it, you have analog RCA outputs from an 1/8" to left and right RCA outputs. when you're randomly using the computer, it'll switch to internal speakers, then to digital audio, back to your stereo analog external speakers.
This should not be happening and if it's happening with streaming content (I am unaware of anything that streams in 5.1 digital audio) then this must be something that an apple specialist should look at and consider.
Does this happen with the headphone jack out? when you hold your finger over the headphone jack area does a red beam come out of it *blinking* or just on? This will be a good indicator that your audio hardware is faulty. are you running HDMI out?

my ipod touch has the same problem. I restored it three times, but that can't help.

  • Headphones in = internal speakers | headphones out = digital output???

When the headphones are plugged in, the sound comes out from the internal speakers.
When the headphones are taken out, the sound comes out of the digital output, with a red light shining out the headphone port.

I have a sort of similar problem, I have an imac 24" and recently purchased a pair of logitech S220 speakers.
The speakers work fine and all, no problem, but as soon as I plug my headphones into the headphone jack on the logitech remote pod, the sound no longer comes from the superior external speakers, but from the imac speakers. It's quite annoying as I specifically bought these speakers for a louder listening experience at night, and good though the internal speakers are, they don't cut it for me.
So any way around this guys? how do I listen to my music on headphones through external speakers??
    thank you very much
    regards

  • Sound output: keeps changing from internal speakers to Apple TV

My iMac keeps changing the soudn output from internal speakers to Apple TV. Why. This makes it a pain. Eveytime I use the iMAc, I have to go into preferences>sound>output and switch to internal speakers. Any ideas how to stop this form happeneing?
    Thanks!

If you use LogMeIn, it is their sound driver.  I'm having identical problem and it started after using LogMeIn.

  • Sound output, comes out headphones AND internal speakers

I've had my refurbished PBG4 1.33 GHz for a few months and when I plug in headphones, the sound comes out the headphones AND the internal speakers of the laptop. I've tried messing w/ the System Prefs/Output with no luck whatsoever. Any suggestions, or anybody else have this problem at all? I've read threads here that have been similar but not quite this particular problem. I need the sound to ONLY come through the headphones when they are plugged in. Kinda defeats the purpose if sound still comes out the laptop internal speakers w/ headphones plugged in.

GO to System Preferences and open "sound".
In "Output" make sure you have selected "headphones" as the source.
In "Input" make sure you have selected "line in"
Also make sure your headphones are plugged into the correct socket. There are two. The one you should be using is the one nearest the front of the computer.

  • ThinkPad T430s No Sound Through Headphones or Internal Speakers

My laptop is unable to play sound through both headphones/earphones and its internal speakers.
I downloaded and installed the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver from the following site: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t43... .
As a result, the Device Manager shows that the HD Audio Device is working properly.
Also, there is a green check mark over the internal speakers icon and headphones icon (when I plug the headphones into the jack), which was not present before I installed the Realtek Driver.
However, there is still an "X" over the audio icon in the taskbar.
When I click on the audio icon, the following window appears, stating that the audio device is disabled.
I have went through various forums and solutions, but none have been helpful so far.
Thank you so much for your time and help for this issue!

The Unknown Device seems to have disappeared from my Device Manager when I restarted my laptop. However, the HD Audio Device is still there.
My audio stopped working around December 23, 2014. Since then, I have tried to find solutions on various other sites. But, when I search for the System Restore, it only brings up a recent Windows Update.
Roll Back for the HD Audio Device is greyed out.
Also, after uninstalling the HD Audio Device and rebooting Windows, this dialog appears, mentioning that the Unidentified Device is something that was unplugged, which I think are the headphones. Also, there was a Failed installation for the Audio Device.
Thanks so much for helping me look into this problem.

    Hi:
Does your notebook have an Intel or AMD processor?
If it has an AMD processor, follow the instructions I posted at the link below for how to get the XP audio driver to work.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-PC-Sound-and-Audio/multimedia-audio-controller-driver-for-wind...
If it has an Intel processor try doing the same thing but with this driver instead...
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-44349-3&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...
You would browse to:  C:\SWSetup\sp28552\SMAXWDM\W2K_XP\smwdmATI, and select the SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio device from the list.
There are no Vista or W7 drivers for the card reader (Base System Device), so try the XP driver.  I think it will work.

  • Sound bouncing between Headphones and Internal Speaker

I'll use my headphones for an extended period of time and after I unplug the headphones, the sound will "bounce" btw Internal Speaker & Headphones per the Sound Output display within System Preferences. I am running the latest OS X. I do have an older PowerBook G4 12"...but I don't really remember encountering this issue until recently.
    Thoughts? Suggestions?

I have the same problem - when the headphones are not plugged in, I hear and see the sound output in the System Preferences -> Sound -> Output -> Choose a device for sound output shifting between Internal Speakers, Headphones and Built-in Audio (ispk).
When I plug in the headphones, though, the sound stablilises to the headphones. The sound, from iTunes at least, also seems to be ok with AirPort Express with AirTunes. Also if I play a music video with Quicktime, things return to normal. But simply playing music to the internal speakers is problematic.
My PowerBook G4 is also almost 2 years old, and just started doing this today. I suspect it has something to do with the headphone jack and auto-sensing whether it's plugged or not. But I've never noticed the Built-in Audio (ispk) option before this problem started up.

  • Sound in my headphones switches to speakers when I try to play two things at once. How do I fix that?

I've had this problem since I downloaded the latest version of iTunes a few days ago. If I'm listening to music with my headphones on and I try to play a video on youtube or something, the music switches to my computer's speakers while the video plays in my headphones. It even does it when the sound plays automatically on a website. One of those "Congratulations, you won!" messages played when I went to a site and the music started playing on my computers speakers while the message played in my headphones. I doubt this is a problem with my headphones because I tried it with a pair of Apple earbuds included with the iPhone I bought for my mom. Both the headphones and the earbuds were purchased within the past two weeks, so they're brand new. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

  • Sound 'out' is reset to "Internal speakers" after any restart.

I'd prefer it would stay assigned to "line out" but this won't happen.  Has anyone experience with this mystery?

Sound output reverting to internal speakers after restart

  • System Sounds Have Started Playing Through Internal Speakers

I have a Presonus Firebox sound card through which I play all my audio. Suddenly and mysteriously, all my system sounds (email sent, email received, trash emptied, etc.) are going through my internal speakers, while all my apps remain as they were -- iTunes, FCP, Firebox, etc., all play audio through my sound card and speakers. In System Prefs, the Firebox is chosen as input, output and sound effects.
Why is this happening, and how do I fix it?
    Thanks,
    Giraut

    Hi Giraut,
I don't have such a device to check, nor even external speakers, but I suspect this invisible file is corrupted, I'd drag it to the desktop and see if you can set it again...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPreferences<12digitHexNumb er>.plist
Might check Midi Setup Utility to see if it's set for 44.1K also.

  • MBP changing from (plugged in!) headphones to internal speakers

    Hi All,
I wasn't really sure how to phrase the subject of this so I hope it made sense.
Basically, I was using my MBP at work the other day, plugged into a tape adapter via the headphone socket. All was working fine and then every now and then it would drop the connection to the headphone socket and swap to playing on the internal speakers.
So, I thought maybe it might be my cheap tape adapter, so I plugged in my headphones (Ultimate Ears Super.Fi Pro 5s) which I use every day on my iPhone and therefore know are fine. Same issue!!
So, any ideas guys? Hardware or software do we think?
    Cheers,
    Tom

I believe what is happening is the audio socket on the new MBPs is loose; they all seem to be this way. My old MBP is nice and snug but the new MBP looses it's connection if you barely touch it. I took mine back, but after checking all the floor models on display at my local Apple store I decided they were all this way and it wasn't worth replacing the unit. Just make sure when you plug it in to push on it to ensure it's all the way in and try not to move it.

  • Boot Camp - audio coming from headphones AND internal speakers

Am not sure how prevalent this problem is. I've got XP Pro running on my iMac 20", and am guessing I've got a glitch in boot camp's windows audio drivers.
Normally, when you plug your headphones in, your audio signal is supposed to be routed to them and your internal speakers would be muted. On mine, however, only in XP, plugging in the headphones does indeed cause audio to come out of the headphones, but it does not mute the internal speakers. Basically, I can't stop the audio from coming out the internal speakers without muting everything.
I've gotten no help from Windows volume controls, and unlike on the Mac OS side, there isn't a separate volume setting when the headphones are unplugged.
Anybody see this besides me? Anybody find a solution that'll save me the time of waiting for a new audio driver?
    Thanks in advance!

no new drivers to download. However, the latest Firmware update at least auto-sets the internal speakers to a lower volume at startup (instead of full volume)

  • How do you record sound with Apple headphones Mac Pro?

(2008 Mac Pro)  I'm trying to record a voice over on iMovie, and it won't record sound no matter what option I use for the sound input.  I'm plugging my apple headphones into the headphone jack like I do on my MacBook (which works).  I know  that the Macbook has an in/out in one jack, but is it not the same for the Mac Pro?  I've tried sticking the headphones in the back audio out where I can plug my stereo in and it wont even plug in.  Also I know its not iMovie because Quicktime doesn't work with audio recording either.

The Mac Pro is not compatible with analog microphones.  Its headphone jack is for output only.  It does not work with headset microphones.  Its audio in jack is line-level, so would need a pre-amp to work with most microphones.
The simplest solution is a USB headset or microphone.
