What Klaus1 is attempting to point out is that the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback Component is a video only component. As such, the audio is compatible only if the audio format in the multiplexed file is already QT compatible with your system configuration. An MPEG file normally consists of MPEG-2 video (handled by the component you purchased) which is multiplexed with MPEG-1 layer audio (MP1, MP2, or MP3), AC3, or PCM audio. If all you want to do is make your file playable with audio in the QT X and/or QT 7 media player, then the easiest approach is to simply convert the non-playing audio compression format to one that is supported. In most cases that would be an MPEG file type containing MPEG-2 video (from the source file) re-multiplexed with MPEG-1, Layer 2 (MP2) audio. This is a very common combination compatible with both Mac and PC platforms.
Since you already have the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component installed, all you really need is the free MPEG Streamclip application. Simply open the file in MPEG Streamclip, select the "Convert to MPEG with MP2 audio..." option, and provide a new name for your target file. The Streamclip application will then de-mux the file, convert the audio (probably AC3) to MP2 audio, re-mux the MP2 audio with the original MPEG-2 video and copy it to the newly named MPEG file container. Since the video is not re-compressed by this action, the work flow is reasonably fast. Further, if you have a lot of files to convert, you can even set up a batch list of files to be converted. MPEG Streamclips is a very handy application and highly recommended if you plan to do much trimming/limited editing of MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 content on a Mac.

  • No sound with Quicktime 7

I have no sound when I play a .avi movie with Quicktime 7.6, I get the message that I require another component. However when directed to the website with components I DONT KNOW which component to download to get sound. Can someone please assist me with this.
    thank you

Perian is third party software so you can't expect Apple to refer you to something it can't even be sure will exist (an in some cases didn't exist) when they write their error message in the program. It also could have been another third-party software issue. I think all Quicktime knows is that something is missing, but it can't tell you exactly what. Not that many of us find Apple's error messages all that informative at times, especially the numerical ones. At least this one was in English.

  • No Sound with QuickTime 7.0.4 video streams on Intel

I just ran the latest QuickTime software update (7.0.4 Pro) and now I get no sound when viewing streaming video. This only happens on my MacBook Pro. None of the PowerPC-based Macs that I've tried experience this issue. Any suggestions on troubleshooting this? Is there a way I can go back to 7.0.3?
Since updating to QuickTime 7.0.4, Real Player 10.0.0 has also lost its sound with streaming videos. I've also tried VLC (0.8.4 & the latest Intel build) but it isn't working properly on the MacBook yet.
Again, the video works fine, just no sound & this only effects streaming video.

Well then its not a component apparently... have you tried playing the stream with something other than QuickTime, such as MPlayer OSX?

  • No sound with quicktime plug in on web pages

There's no sound when I play videos on web pages encoded with quicktime, however Flash videos, as on YouTube for example, do work. This seems to have happened recently, but I cannot pinpoint what caused it.
One solution I found and have tried, is setting the audio format in the Audio MIDI Set up, but it was already the recommended 44100 Hz.
    Any ideas gratefully received.

Please provide a sample link/URL of the problematic web pages.
If you have Garage Band installed, open same & then quit out of the app.
If you have not already done so, try running repair permissions from your HD and afterwards run +repair disk+ from your software install DVD.

  • No sound with QuickTime

Lately I’ve formatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows XP.
PROBLEM: Quicktime doesn’t seem to work properly anymore. The image is just right, but no sound can be heard at all. If I move the playback cursor, QuickTime player freeze and a sound loop endlessly until the program crash.
I don’t know what the cause is… I’ve reinstalled QuickTime tons of time but in vain. Windows XP updates don’t solve the problem either.
QuickTime is my favorite player; I would really like to find a solution.
    Thank you!

You still there? I can't find a control panel for QuickTime. I have Windows Media Player and if I open the file with that I get sound. Is that a problem or a soluton for QuickTime? Thanks.

  • No option to export sound with quicktime

When i'm trying to export a video clip of various formats, all i'll get is the video, no audio. Upon investigation there is no option to export sound (the half of the settings is unclickable). I do have a sound card with correct drivers installed, and under quicktime preferances the correct device is selected. However, when i am playing a "QUICKTIME MOVIE" I can export with audio. Is there some sort of codec needed, or is there a setting i can change?

QuickTime Pro doesn't export audio from "muxed" formats (like MPEG 1 or 2 and Flash).
Use MPEG Streamclip (free) for your .mpg files.

  • No sound with my QuickTime

I am so frustrated with QuickTime. No sound and I've tried the check the box thing. What do I need to do to get the sound to work? Apple needs to step up and fix this problem.
    Someone help. Please.

I had the same problem after converting some home movies to ipod format. I purchased the QuickTime Pro upgrade key... 30 **** bucks. Video quality looks great but no good use since there is no sound. I so want a refund but I thought I was the only one with the problem. I found a better program and guess what FREE (for files less than 5 minutes long....Great for home clips.) Its called ImToo Ipod movie converter. Works great and it ***** thats I had to pay for something I cant use. Maybe if they get enough complaints we get a refund or at least our money's worth.

  • Lion OS with Quicktime playing MPEGs

I have been attempting to find a way to play MPEGs on my Macbook Pro. I downloaded OS Lion. The MPEGs would not play in this. I then downloaded the Streamclip MPEG application and the Quicktime MPEG Component package. I used Streamclip to install this. Even after doing this, the MPEGs would not play. I then converted them using Streamclip (to .mov) and these new converted files will STILL not play. All throughout I have gotten the same message  - that I am missing codecs needed to play the movies (even for the .mov ones).
Can anyone offer any help? I can see thumbnails of the movies now (which I couldn't before), but when I click them to play, they still won't play.
    I am running Quicktime Player V. 10.1
    OS X 10.7.3

"MPEG" is a kind of catch-all for multiple formats so it would help to know which specific mpeg codec.  There's various MediaInfo applications for OSX that will give you all kinds of details about the codecs used.
You may in general improve video playback with Quicktime with the help of
Perian codecs for Quicktime - http://www.perian.org - plugins to add functionality to Quicktime for playing additional audio and video formats

The "restore disk" is built into the Mac. See About Recovery.
Need more specifics about what error messages you got while installing Adobe Flash.
However, you can almost avoid Flash altogether by setting YouTube to play the HTML5 version instead.
Click the Try something new! link at the bottom of the YouTube page.
I don't know about the sound issue. Might be hardware as you think. Try other headphones to check.
