No sound without headphones or external speakers

as the subject implies
no sound anywhere on anything without headphones or speakers - DVD's, itunes, computer sounds etc. etc. etc.
Surely this is not normal? (this is a brand new machine)
I have checked all the obvious (or seemingly obvious) things - mute is off - volume is turned up in system preferences etc. etc.
Any thoughts appreciated.

I've had this happen when I was doing a lot of switching between my iMic and other sound port in's and out's between various editing apps - a Pram reset restored things to normal for me.

  • HT1665 how come i cant use other headphones or external speakers with my ipod

how come i cant use headphones or external speakers with my ipod.sood as you plug either in there is no sound.

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Check also Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing. Make sure that the sound balance is not set all the way to "R".
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

I has a problem and I am not able to solve that when I use sound effect it is showed only headphone even I did not installing the headphone I has a problem and I am not able to solve that I am. Not able to hear the sound without headphone please help guys

Sounds to me like a hardware issue or maybe something is stuck in the headphone jack. When you plug in headphones, the jack in the iPad is switched to play only through the headphones and not the iPad's speakers. Sounds like either the jack is faulty or there is something stuck in the headphone jack. Get a flashlight & look inside the jack for anything that looks like it doesn't belong in there.
Regardless, I'd take it in to an Apple Store if you have one nearby to have it checked.
EDIT: "Ocean20" had an excellent suggestion above. While doing that, you may also want to rotate/twist the plug in the jack back & forth a few times as well. Dirty contacts can often times be cleared by doing this.

  • Cannot get internal speakers to work. Only works with headphones or external speakers?????

All of a sudden my MacBook Pro internal speakers are not working. The status bar at the top of the screen shows everything bold and in black print but now the speaker volume symbol shows just the gray color and will not allow me to adjust the volume. However, when I plug in headphones or external speakers the symbol becomes bold and black the way it should and everything works just fine??? How do I correct this?

Go step by step and test.
1.Plug in and  remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    2. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
        Do this twice
    3. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the method for:     "Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    Best.

  • Morese Code sound coming through my external speakers

Recently I've been getting Morse Code sounds coming through my external speakers. It's not all the time but at least 2-3 time a day. Any idea?

If I have my cel phone near my iMac, every now and then I get a sound that could be described as Morse code like. It has no lasting effects, so I don't worry much about it.

  • My iPhone wont play sound without headphones in

My iPhone wont play any sound without headphones in the volume
Buttons work but won't change sound my speaker won't play any sound at all

i had the same problem and used a very small screwdriver, inserted carefully into the heaphone socket, to very gently push the microswitch at the bottom of the socket. i did this a couple of times and suddenly the sound works again.
i think the button down there can get stuck and cause this problem, or maybe it was just a fluke... try it anyway- it worked for me!

  • No sound coming out of external speakers

Here's my situtation. I just recently received my MacBook and I wanted to connect my external speakers that I used with my previous PC laptop. It worked perfectly with the PC laptop. When I plug in the speaker cord into the port, no sound comes out of the external speakers. But sound comes out of the internal MacBook speakers.
I plugged it in the right port.
Volume is on both in the MacBook and the external speakers.
    Speakers are on.
Speakers worked fine with my PC laptop.
What can i do? The connection is fine because it was just plugged in my PC laptop and they were working. Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the reply. This is what i tried...its really weird but it works.
I plugged in the speaker plug into the port with the headphone symbol and now sound comes out of the speakers! (Maybe this was the correct port in the first place! Sorry for the newbie mistake.) I was used to ports being color coded and I just plugged in the green speaker cord into the green port on my PC.
So the port on the left is for audio in right?
And the port with the headphone symbol is for headphones and speaker (audio out)
When I go to to System Preferences, it recognizes the speakers as "Headphones". But I don't think that really matters.
Thanks for the help. I have sound now coming out of my external speakers.

  • No sound through headphones or attached speakers

Hello. My Ipad 2 in general works very well and the sound is fine. However, if I plug headphones or somelike like external speakers into the Ipad I get no sound out. It used to work but only recently stopped. I can't help but wonder if there is some setting I am missing more than there being a physical problem with the audio jack since the audio jack barely gets used and was fine with no signs of trouble. Any way to reset the sound settings to see if something got set wrong?

The Unknown Device seems to have disappeared from my Device Manager when I restarted my laptop. However, the HD Audio Device is still there.
My audio stopped working around December 23, 2014. Since then, I have tried to find solutions on various other sites. But, when I search for the System Restore, it only brings up a recent Windows Update.
Roll Back for the HD Audio Device is greyed out.
Also, after uninstalling the HD Audio Device and rebooting Windows, this dialog appears, mentioning that the Unidentified Device is something that was unplugged, which I think are the headphones. Also, there was a Failed installation for the Audio Device.
Thanks so much for helping me look into this problem.

  • HP Pavilion Dv7 Windows 7 No sound through headphone jack or speakers

Hello. I have been having trouble with the sound of my laptop for quite some time.
I discovered this forum, and was trying to find my laptop's problem, except I found that I could not find a thread that pertains to my laptop's individual problem. As stated in the title of this thread, my laptop does not play sound through the headphone jack or speakers. However, when I plug in a usb headset the sound works. I want to rule out the possibility that this is something I can fix myself before I have this computer sent in to be repared.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software that runs the sound (I forget what it's called). I also tried turning off the laptop, removing the battery and holding down the power but ton for 30 seconds; that didn't work. I have tried making headphones and speakers the default audio, except that didn't work either. It seems that maybe my laptop is just broken, and this is the second time this has happened. (The second time, what the hell!)

  • No sound from internal or external speakers

Imac 27" mid-2011 running Maverics 10.9.3  I'm not getting any sound from internal or ext. speakers.  I can hear the startup sound when booting up.
System Preferences->Sound only shows Digital Out for OUTPUT and Output Volume is maxed and can't be adjusted.  Mute is NOT checked.
I've done an SMC and PRAM reset with no change.  I've tried multiple times plugging and unplugging the external speaker cable jack.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Looks like you are not getting sound from your speakers. I see you have tried different things to try and resolve this. This article is a good resource for this issue.

  • Sound panel cannot see external speakers

I have a couple year old imac upgraded to 10.5.8
I'm attempting to use external speakers via this path >> wireless to airport express >> optical to separate amp >> unpowered speakers. This used to work (maybe prior to upgrade to 10.5.8?), but now I
can get it to work ONLY using analog link from airport to amplifier, but not optical, and ONLY for iTunes. Itunes lets me select internal and externals speakers using the little icon on the lower right.
Video viewed via safari only allows internal speakers. If I go to preferences/sound/output it only shows the internal speakers as a selectable device. Could not find any way to add one so I assume if the system can't discover it you cannot add it.
I reinstalled Airport and tried to reset the PRAM (?). Neither hurt but didn't help either.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't much care whether it's an analog or optical link to the amp, but I sure would like to hear internet sourced music via my external speakers.
    thanks

I've tried each usb port and they still don't work.
So these are the older type that connect using USB, and not the "II" version that connects using the mini-stereo jack? I ask, because I thought USB version does not work with the latest Mac OS X. I guess it must work, based on what you wrote.
Since noticing this problem, have you shut down (powered off) the iMac and then started it back up? For hardware, shutting down is not the same as just restarting.
Some sound-related settings are stored in PRAM, so you can try resetting PRAM

  • Sound problem - internal or external speakers

I have a mini and a USB hub (Belkin) with a USB headset (Plantronics) connected to it, and then a display (FujitsuSiemens) with speakers connected to the sound port on the mini.
My problem is that some applications (Safari, RealPLayer, MS Remote Desktop) favors the headset for sound out, others (iTunes, Mail, well most apps actually) chooses the speakers in the display which I'm very pleased with.
System Preferences states sound out in the internal speakers, but obviosly it doesn't really work with som apps so my question is: why, why, why Mr Anderson...
Is it some plist that has gone heywire or do I need to reset some weird PRAM or what ever...

You may need to reset PRAM/NVRAM.
First, check that the jack is clean. Put some alcohol on a plug and insert it a few times. See if that helps.
is your output both digital and analog? If digital, is the red laser light visible in the socket? Do not look directly into the socket when checking.
If all else fails try a PRAM reset:
    Reset your computer’s PRAM
A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “parameter random-access memory” or PRAM, stores certain settings in a location that Mac OS X can access quickly. The particular settings that are stored depend on your type of Mac and the types of devices connected to it. The settings include your designated startup disk, display resolution, speaker volume, and other information.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
DO NOT HOLD These keys beyond the second startup sound!
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
