No space in available paging segments - plenty of room on HD
Greetings all,
I'm running OS X Server 10.5.4 on a 2.8Ghz iMac with 4G of RAM. Every night my server crashes and reboots. The logs reveal the following:
11/21/08 2:12:02 AM kernel (default pager): [KERNEL]: no space in available paging segments
This message is repeated many times right up till crash.
My boot partition is 100GB and has 43G free. I have done nothing to alter SWAP size or location.
The server has been up in its current form for over a year. This problem first appeared about 3 months ago. I recently doubled my RAM from 2G to 4G to see if that would address this issue - the problem seemed to clear up for a while, but then returned. I've checked my disk integrity using disk utility - all seems well - and I'm getting no disk i/o errors.
Not hosting any mail services.
Services being hosted:
AFP, DHCP, DNS, iCal, OD, Print, Software Update, Web (wiki and calendaring).
I did have Server Admin running during the crash, and I also notice the following errors are repeated QUITE a lot in the log:
11/24/08 5:55:40 AM [0x0-0x1ad1ad].com.apple.ServerAdmin[19764] * ERROR: -[GRAxes computeLayout]:1124 - plotRect height = 0.000000 <= 0.0 *
11/24/08 5:55:40 AM [0x0-0x1ad1ad].com.apple.ServerAdmin[19764] * ERROR: -[GRChartView computeLayout]:1194 - Layout for overlay axes (0x172337c0) failed. *
Related?
Looking at /var/vm doesn't reveal much - pretty empty in there right now - but I suppose I'd have to be looking at it just before the server crashes (which would mean watching it all night - not too exciting).
I'm a bit of a newbie at command line troubleshooting. Can anyone give me an idea of how to troubleshoot this issue?
Many thanks!

Thanks for the ideas, Brian. I'll try that.
I do always have Server Admin open. The reason for this is that I've had to set up an Automator script to toggle Software Updtate service to start downloading from Apple at Midnight, then stop again at 3AM. And the reason for that is because our ISP is via Satellite, and bandwidth is severely restricted except between midnight and 3AM. I've tried to find or create some sort of script that would start and stop just the downloads - but all I've been able to figure out is a script that will start/stop ALL of software update service, which I do not want, since over night is prime time for clients to grab their updates from my server.
And now that I think of it - - I wonder if somehow Automator and/or SWUPD is creating the problem?

TS4036 itunes could not restore the iphone because not enough free space is available on the iphone
On April 13, 2013 i plugged my phone in and itunes immediately started an upgrade on my iphone 4 operating system to ios 6.1.3. ONce it completed my phone was restored to factury settings. When i tried restore my backup to the phone, i got the following message
itunes could not restore the iphone because not enough free space is available on the iphone
I am so ****** because i can't figure out a way to at least get my photos from this back...its all lost
I spoke with an Apple rep that day named Jamie who was supposed to help me retrieve my data, but we couldn't figure it out and he asked me to call back in a day or so to get it done. When I called back, i left several messages and got no response. Now i try calling support and they want money before they will talk to me.
Somebody please help.
ThanksIf you restored your phone as new there should be plenty of free space on it. Check Settings>General>Usage to see how much free space you have.
Is your backup on your computer or in iCloud? -

I can not seem to back up my iPhone 5s, error message is: iTunes cannot back up this iPhone because not enough free space is available on this computer
There is plenty of space over 260gbAre you absolutely sure there's 20GB in use, and not that it has 20GB free? If you click on the hard drive icon on your desktop and click cmd-i to Get Info, what is the available space?
Matt -
Space not available yet there is
Ipad says I cant download a video because not enough space, yet in SETTINGS shows plenty of space available?
sorry I was confused by your use of "download"
So you are trying to sync the video to your iPad?
If so, when the iPad is plugged in you can see the coloured bar which shows how much space is used by each type of file, what is that showing left remaining on your iPad? -
I just replaced my iPhone 5 because of a cracked face. I backed up the old phone to iTunes. When I tried to restore my data off of iTunes to the new phone, I got an error message saying that iTunes could not restore the iPhone because not enough free space is available on the new iPhone. Now what?
I have Apple Care+, but I'll be darned if I can find any way to contact anyone at Apple to talk to about this. They take your money, but make darned sure they don't have to support you unless you jump through a bunch of hoops first, like this site.I've done a restore.. The phone was completely wiped back to factory settings.. It then tells me there isn't enough space on the phone to restore from back up? How when the phone is empty?!

Database Instance Using Swap Space even When There is Plenty of Free RAM
Hi,
I am facinga strange issue in oracle on solaris 5.10
Platform:solaris 5.10
Database version:11.2.0.1.0
Our database Instance Using Swap Space even When There is Plenty of Free RAM.
We have 80GB of physical RAM, 32GB is set to oracle SGA_MAX_SIZE
memory parameters:
memory_max_target big integer 32G
memory_target big integer 32G
sga_max_size big integer 32G
sga_target big integer 32G
but still oracle is taking memory from swap even though we have enough physical memory.
please find the top output

I refered the metalink document id: [ID 761960.1]
Database Instance Using Swap Space When There is Plenty of Free RAM metalink note [ID 761960.1]
and tried the disabling the sga_max_size and memory_max_target and memory target with all different combination but no use.
We have one more box where same setup was configured in solaris platform but there the above memory parameters are not disabled but it is not using swap space it takes memry only from physical RAM
Can any one throw some lights on this issue. It wopuld be great if I come to know where the exact problem
Thanks in advance
With Regards,
Boobathi PHi,
I didn't say I am not using 11gr2 memory parameters I am using all the automatic memory parameters but the thinks is as per the metalink note I tried by disabling the automatic memory parameters. but that didn't help me in preventing unnecessary swap usage. So I reverted. now it is using automatic memory parameters.
so What is the solution for this?
With Regards,
Boo -

Hi charlatan19,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand the need to free up space on your iPhone sometimes. Please use the attached article that explains how to delete content from your device directly or using your computer.

I backed up to my PC and attempted restore but I keep getting an error message that "iTunes could not restore the iPhone because not enough free space is available." I have a 32GB iPhone; only 13GB used!!! HELP! iCloud backup/restore did not work either! How can I resolve this problem to restore from back up.
If you're not a developer then you really should not have upgraded.
I'm unsure how you can fix this as you have already done a back-up on iOS 7 and apple don't support firmware downgrades. -
i am trying to unlock the iphone 4, aftermanual backup on the computer, i am trying to restore the backup, a message is showing up " itunes could not restore the iphone ' .....iphone ' because not enough free space is available on the iphone" but there is 5.7gb available

Error: Insufficient Disk Space (but my HD has plenty of space)
I am getting the following message when trying to import my vacation photos from SD card to Aperture.
"Insufficient Disk Space
There is not enough free space on your Aperture Library volume to import the selected items. It is estimated that you need at least 447MB of additional free space."
Does anyone know what this means?
I have plenty of room on my HD. How do I add to my Aperture Library volume?
Just looked and my Aperture Libary is 53.77 GB.Please advise your hardware and workflow info in some detail. Specific Mac, RAM, hard drives or SSDs, where the Library is located, how full (in %) each hard drive is, OS/app versions, etc. so we can help you to troubleshoot your problem.
Folks have lots of good reasons for not upgrading OS or app versions. Personally I try to always delay updating versions, and did not go to Lion until 10.7.4. However if you are still on 10.7.1 like it says in your sig I do suggest that you seriously consider upgrading to a newer version of the OS.
Given that you are currently having problems I do recommend that you report the full hdw/sw/workflow info here before doing anything dramatic like upgrading the OS. Any suggestions that we make while ignorant of your full info may lead in the wrong direction.
Thanks.

Before updating to iOS6, I backed my iPhone up onto my PC, as I am aware that when updating an iPhone things like notes, contacts etc tend to disappear. However, after the update was complete, when I tried to 'restore back up' I keep getting the message "iTunes could not restore the iPhone because not enough free space is available of the iPhone". I don't understand why this message keeps coming up, because I have 20.96GB free space. All my contacts have gone, and I urgently need them for work. What can I do to solve this problem???
I suggest you delete some stuff off your phone so free up some memory and try again

ITunes could not back up the iPhone because not enough free space is available on this computer
iTunes 11.0.1 (22)

iPhone5
I get this error occasionally since getting the iPhone5 in October. My last successful back up to thei Mac was yesterday. Tonight, no backup.
One time when this occurred I had trashed files, and after I emptied the Trash the sympton went away. Tonight I had files in the Trash and emptie the Trash before connecting my iPhone and now no backup allowed.
I have quit and relaunched iTunes, and unconnected and connected the iPhone tonight with no change in the symptom.
My next counter measure will be to reboot.
Any suggestions? On my computer (Spring 2006 iMac, Snow Leopard, iTunes 11.1.3):
- I have 1.36 _terabytes_ of free space on my system disk.
- I have 2.1 _terabytes_ of free space on my Drobo[*] which contains my iTunes library.
My iPhone is an iPhone 5S 64Gb.
A backup should require, one would assume, less than 64Gb. In other words, a drop in the ocean of free space available to iTunes.
... and yet EVERY time I attempt a backup to my computer since getting my 5S it says:
'iTunes could not back up the iPhone "[name]'s iPhone" because not enough free space is available on this computer. Removing files and emptying the Trash will free up additional space.'
It's very clear that there's a bug given how much space I have available, and it's been present for 2+ months. :/ I had been able to back up my iPhone 4S.
- Stephen
[*] As far as the OS is concerned, the volume has 3.22Tb free, but it is backed by 2.10Tb of actual available space. In any case, "a whole heck of a lot".
