"No Speakers or headphones are plugged in" problem

A few days ago I had a problem with my cheap insignia speaker's subwoofer not working. I tried doing my usual open up and repair scenario. (All this was done while my speakers still plugged in my desktops front headphone jack). I was messing around with the circuit board on the speaker making these weird static noises untill Ive finally short circuited my speakers....."No sound"...After giving up I went back on my computer and decided to just buy a new speaker. The following hour I plugged in my headphone in the front jack and windows could not detect any connection. I checked the "playback devices" and it displayed it as "not plugged in". I also tried the back port (green speaker port) with my headphones and I still got no sound. I tried doing a driver reinstall(ATI high def Audio and Realtech Audio) and what not and still no luck. In the sound menu, the speaker and headphone is colored gray while my earphones are still plugged in...I cant even enable it !
I dont know what to do now. Any help guys =/ ?
PS  I think I may have short circuited my front jack.
PS I havent tested the back port with a new speaker because I dont have any speaker around the house at the moment
PS Will buying a soundcard fix this, and just use the sound cards audio ports?
PS Will I need to buy a new front port jack?

Try restoring the original IDT Audio drivers using this method: Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 8)
If that fails you can check for hardware test here: Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 8)

  • Is there any way to make iphone 6 ring through speakers when headphones are plugged in?

Plugging in a headset disables the speaker...nothing you can do to work around that.

  • HP Pavilion Slimline Windows 7 64-bit: "No speakers or headphones are plugged in" error message

I have an HP pavilion slimline, model s5120y, with Windows 7 (64-bit).
I just got my power supply replaced and when I brought it home and plugged everything in, I couldn't get any sound. It told me no audio devices were plugged in, but my monitor with speakers was plugged into the audio jack in the back, the green one (it's an onboard sound card and NOT HDMI). I also tried my headphones and same thing, so I know it's not the monitor.
So then I tried the jack in the front and it worked, although the sound was really low, even with the volume turned all the way up. But, then like an hour later it went off again giving me the same message that no devices are plugged in. I tried the back jack again and then it worked again for a short amount of time. It keeps going in and out and switching to whether the back or front jacks will work, or nothing at all telling me nothing is plugged in.
Another thing is that my web cam has a mic, which is plugged in using USB, and the mic on the cam seems to record fine, and I assume it needs the sound card to do that. So, i'm guessing this is some sort of software problem because if the sound card was **bleep**ed up then the mic wouldn't be able to record, right? Well, the program I was using was showing that it was recording and the levels went up as I talked louder, so I assume it was picking everything up properly.
The audio worked fine before I brought it in for repair but I can't figure out what could have happened to break it when all he did was plug in a new power supply.
I went to the device manager and it says everything is working properly and all drivers are up to date. I also uninstalled then re-installed, disabled then re-enabled. I even went to the manufacturer's page and installed the original driver for RealTek. I also went into BIOS to make sure onboard audio was enabled. Every troubleshooting option I have on my computer says everything is working fine, but that there are no speakers plugged in even when they are.
Also I should mention, when the sound does come back on, it's pretty low and sometimes muffled, and sometimes the monitor speakers will make a dim clicking kind of sound, but not all the time. One person told me it was a known issue with the latest windows update, but I haven't done an update since I got the computer back and I couldn't find any info on that anywhere on the internet.
Thanks to anyone who has any suggestions!

Hi Srizzle, I have done some research for you and I have found a updated driver that is designed to resolve the issue of No sound from head phones or from external speakers. Please click on the link to get to the driver down load page.

  • Why does my iphone 4 play music out of the speakers when headphones are plugged in all the way

Any suggestions? Just happened yesterday out of nowhere

Have you checked the settings in System Preferences>Sound?  Are you certain that the jack is fully inserted?  If available I would try another set of earphones.
    Ciao.

  • Speakers only play when headphones are plugged in.

My internal speakers only play when the headphones are plugged in. (System preferences-Sound tells me I'm using Internal Speakers, audio port for sound input).  When I remove the headphones, the red light in the jack goes on and the computer says I'm using Digital Out ("The selected device has no output controls.)
I have read many community responses, most saying that the switch inside the headphone jack hasn't engaged, that I should fiddle with it using a paperclip/bobbypin/toothpick or just plug-in and unplug headphones repeatedly.  I have repeatedly both of these to no avail.  When fiddling, I don't really know which bump inside there is the switch, I've played with them all.
No, it's not dirty, I've blowin air, vaccuumed, dusted. Same problem.
I do use my speakers often for work and pleasure, go between different external speakers and a projector.
It seems that the computer has things backwards- headphones unplugged is pluged and vice versa.
Any suggestions or clear guidance as to what I should be fiddling with when I stick a bobby pin in there?  No need to refer me to old posts, I've read them.
    Thanks in advance,
    TheKip

If your phone is still under warranty, Apple will service your phone for free.
Did you check the headphone port for any kind of debris or lint?
Did you already try another set of headphones? Are you suing the headphones that came with the phone?
Is the headphone jack plugged in fully into the headphone port?

  • Problems with X-Fi Automatic speaker mute if headphones are plugged

Hi guys,?I?have a big problem since a few weeks. I?have activated the?two options under: if Headphones are plugged in (Switch to Headphone Mode and Mute speakers).Everything is working great if?i plug in my Headphones, the speakers are muted. But absolutely random, my speakers are turning on and playing the same sound i hear over my headphones. After a while the speakers will mute again. This is absolutely annoying because the X-Fi seems to ignore this setting from time to time. The Output Mode even stays at microphone. If i unplug the headphones and plug? them in again, it changes to headphone mode but my speakers are still playing only the sound quality changes and i can only hear sound from my front speakers and through my headphones at the same time. It can't be a lose wire or something because if a pull or push my cable or the connector at the front of my External Panel it stays the same. It makes no difference if i only activate the speaker mute option. I have a X-Fi Elite Pro, with the newest Windows XP Professional Drivers (checked them through Auto-Update and the Website). My sound System is a Creative T7700 7. Surround Set connected to the back of my X-Fi Card. My Headphone is connected to the front of the external X-fi sound panel. I'm german so i don't know the?true english names of the driver options.

Still no reply? Hey guys at Creative! I can't properly use my Headphones!!

  • Headphones are plugged into mini iPad but sound still coming from speakers

When I was given this as a gift for Christmas, headphones worked great. Now it doesn't matter if headphones are plugged in or not the sound still comes out of the speakers. I made sure the headphones were in correctly and I've even plugged in different headphones. Is anyone having this problem?
Do I need to take it back?

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be on here saying they tried many different headphones and not getting it fixed if they didn't push it in all the way.  Have you tried resetting your iPad and trying again? To reset it, press and hold the Home and Sleep/Wake button till you see the Apple on the screen and the iPad will reset.  After doing that, try again.

I recently repaired disk permissions on my mac HD and now my on-board speakers wont work, the icon is greyed out and only works when my headphones are plugged in

Try to put your headphones several times in and out from your connection, might be the switch is stuck. Normally it should work again while trying to plug the headphones in and out!

  • Music playing in speakers while my headphones are plugged

I tried 2 different headphones and since yesterday, when it is plugged, i can still hear music or sounds coming from the speakers and i do not hear anything in my headphones...pretty annoying, any idea?

Make sure your headphones are plugged all the way in meaning no silver from the headphone's plug can still be seen.
Otherwise try a hard reset of the device to see if that helps.

  • Internal speakers and headphones are not working

I have hp g6 2231tx os Windows 8, brought it a month ago..now it's internal speakers and headphones are not working..I enabled in playback device from sound mixer and reinstalled drivers but still not working..it's because of hardware or software??

    Hi,
It could be either Hardware or Software related, so try the following and let me know.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp58501-59000/sp58517.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.

    1. headphones, then airplay devices
    2. apple tv
    3. pioneer VSX 2021K
how can I choose speakers on my iMac when headphones are plugged in?

    Hi @tahir77
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that the sound is playing in your earplugs and from the speakers at the same time, and that your system is also not detecting your earphones among the audio devices. I am happy to help.
Firstly, please post the full product number for your notebook. See the following if you need help in finding that.

With that I can find any update drivers for you, but for now you may like to look at this and see if it helps:

  • Volume changes when headphone are plugged, but not when they are unplugged.

    Hi!
Recently I been having an issue with my Macbook Pro 13.
When I connect my headphones to the MBP, the volume changes (as it should be), but when I take them out it doesn't return to normal, it just stays where it was when the headphones were connected.
Now, if i mute my internal speakers and connect the headphones the volume changes, but when i take them off, the volume returns to mute. So the problem is when both (internal speakers and headphones) are set to different volumes.
Here's a video that shows what happens in sound control panel (it's in spanish, "Auriculares"= Headphones and "Altavoces Internos"= Internal Speakers)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdNttRFnxE8&
Does anyone else have this issue?
    Thanks for your answers!

Try a hard reset of the Nano. To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
I assume you have double checked to make sure you are plugging the headset all the way in meaning the white part of the headset is flush with the body of the Nano?

  • IPod nano 6th gen (brand new) doesn't recognize when headphones are plugged in

I have a brand new iPod nano (6th gen), and it doesn't detect when headphones are plugged in. I have read that the problem can ocurr because the headphones are not correctly inserted (which is not the case.. i'm absolutely sure about this) or that the headphone jack has dust inside (which is also not the case, since it is brand new).
    This is what happens:
When i play a song, and then press the sleep/wake button to turn off the display, the music stops. Or if i let the music play, it stops when the screen times out and turns off. These two things occur because the ipod "thinks" that there are no headphones inserted.
When i try to activate the FM radio, the radio won't start because it says that there is no radio signal (which occurs when no headphones are connected).
Needless to say, the microphone and volume controls of the iphone headset, don´t work at all (they even work on the ipod shuffle!).. and because of this, no voice recording for me!
It's a shame, because the FM radio is completely useless, and music playing only works by activating the "double click to play" option in the settings menu.. but it is somewhat cumbersome the process of "play music - turn off the screen - double click to resume playing" every time I select a song.
The headphone detection has only worked randomly when the ipod is connected to the computer, but i haven't been able to figure out under what conditions this occurs. I have read about this issue, and I only would like to know if this is a firmware bug of the 1.2 version. I tried unsuccesfully to downgrade the firmware to the 1.1 version (maybe because the ipod shipped with the 1.2 version).
I have also restored the device in itunes, with no luck.....
Thanks in advance for any useful answer!

    Thanks for your answer...
The headphones that i'm using, are the ones that were included with the iphone 4 (so, they are original).. however this shouldn't be a problem, as the ipod should work fine with whatever headphones i choose to use (sound quality will vary, of course).
The ipod does the same with the headphones that were included in the box, and with every pair of headphones i have used to test, so i'm certain that the ipod has an issue.
I hope that the picture is clear enough.. here you can see that the headphones are fully inserted, and the ipod is not recognizing them.

  • IMac: How to use internal built-in microphone when Bose mic-headphones are plugged?

    Hi there,
I use my  Bose AE2 for Lync conferences in my iMac, but the problem is that, when the headphones are plugged I seem "obliged" to use their  made for iPhone/Mac mic.
The problem is that, however, the sound through this Bose's mic is terrible so the others in the conference can't properly hear me. So I just want to use the internal computer's mic, and it seems not possible when the headphones are plugged.
In that situation, Sys Preferences > Sound > Input, only shows "External microphone" and "Line in".
Meaning, what normally is "Internal microphone" automatically, when plugged, turns into "External microphone" and that's it. It's not possible to use the internal mic anymore if mic headphones are plugged.
Do you know any way to workaround this?
My OS is 10.6.8 (it's work's iMac), but I'm afraid this is not different in 10.9.X.
    Many thanks in advance!

Hi, I plug in the headphones set with a regular  headphones jack plug. They don't go with USB.
