No SSD's or..

Here, on the forum the SSD is no go, no benefits to PREpro or AE, and I get why.
Now via Twitter I get this Adobe tweet about the benefits of SSD to us..
http://adobe.ly/qEIvrZ http://fb.me/1cqcfMA5o
What your opinion?
I think, it's the same HP, Intel, Adobe deal like always.. If right, i feel sorry for the customers who aren't diving in this great forum for a few hours.

Harm,
Not that I have deep pockets, but I am getting a business lease for my new system, so I can push the limits of certain items to get optimal performance in an acceptable budget limit. It comes pretty close to your ideal solution... hehehe
I just got off the phone a few minutes ago with my system integrator, and this is what we etched out just now (just before seeing your post):
C: 1x OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 240GB, for OS, programs AND pagefile, on a PCIe x4 card
D: 1x Corsair Force Series GT 60GB, for cache, on SATA III on-board
E: 1x Corsair Force Series GT 60GB, for scratch, on SATA III on-board
F: 16x 7200RPM Seagate SV35 series 1TB 32MB in RAID3 (or maybe RAID30?) with hot spare, for everything else, on Areca 1880ix-16/4GB
He has built many systems using separate disks for cache and scratch. And he found that it was the best combo for a performance tuned editing rigs. Although he did say conventional HDDs would do for the task, considering the access type and random nature of the read/writes of these functions, lower cost, small capacity SSDs work nicely, especially if you have PPro, AE and PS opened and working at the same time. I decided to spend a bit more to get GTs instead of "conventional" "slower" SSDs to get better performance... just in case. But that was a personal choice with no basis on tested systems. I admit the RevoDrive is overkill for an OS and app drive, but that's a small birthday present I'm treating myself to. But since I'm putting the pagefile on it, and needed the 2 on-board SATA IIIs for the cache and scratch disks, I imagine pagefile access won't ever be an issue at 1500MBps.
I do however have a limit of 14x 3.5" drives in the Lian-Li PC-V2120 (with a 4-in-3 cage, and 2 optical drives). But since I don't have an HPTX motherboard in a HPTX case, I'm hoping to rig in the 2 remaining 3.5" HDDs next to the 2x 2.5" mounts on the PSU separator plate. I'd like to find an alternative case with more drive space, but they are hard to find (aside from the ridiculously expensive, but very nice "Extended Ascension" custom case from Mountain Mod).
My system integrator suggests a little know secret about the SV35 series of Seagate drives. They are enterprise class, RAIDable, rated 24/7 for multiple streams of HD surveillance video recording and playback per drive. If they can do that, they must surely be worthy drives in a RAID for an editing rig? They are robust, have a 5 year warranty, and a lot less costly then the classic enterprise class HDDs. Costs about $68 for 1TB 32MB SATA III per disk from my vendor.  Any thoughts on this series of drives?

  • I have formatted my SSD and hard drive.... I am running a clean install from disk of 8.1 pro. I cannot determine if it is a compatibility

issue or hardware issue. I had run a memory test and scan disk for bad sectors from the bios. As administrator, I enabled automount  in diskpart to allow windows to assign a drive name.
From the bios, I can see both drives and only the ssd. I have not pinpointed when the harddisk is unmounted. It is formatted as NTFS. I can hear it unmount either during boot or upon waking from sleep mode. The bios sees no bad sectors nor does windows.
However, when I had the intel compatibility software installed, my hard drive never mounted. I did a restart and inorder for windows to see my hard drive. I disabled the intel software for the 4th gen i7 processor. This problem is happening less often. I do
not think I have solved the problem. Intel or Windows... I think a bit of both.
If there is a software patch, please guide me to it. I am in school and use my laptop ALL the time. I believe it is a compatibility issue. I have attached this from searching intel's site for downloads and windows is up to date.
I am quite concerned because I can hear my harddrive unmount. It is labeled as healthy NTFS partition. I have checked for hidden volumes and done everything I know to do to check the integrity of the hardware as administrator. I have searched microsofts
libraries and forums and have done everything I can find as suggestions.
I have checked for malware, viruses, etc. My only clue this is going to happen is the hard disk spins up and I hear the fan, then I hear it unmount the drive. Of course, after unmounted there are other issues which I have ruled out as the cause of the problem.
Basically, I am experiencing a lack of swap space after my hard drive unmounts.
Any suggestions, are welcome! I would really like to know if this is a known windows issue. I should not have to disable intel's processor software. I paid for the features of the i7 and would like to utilise the processor.

    Hi,
According to your descriptioin, I don't think this is system problem, it should be Intel driver problem. It would be contact Intel to confirm this issue whether this is their driver problem.

  • Mid-2009 MBP Has Been Hard Freezing, I think it may be the SSD or software?

Please read this fully so you don't end up suggesting something I've already tried.
I have the Mid-2009 version of the 13" MBP that I received in December 2009. Almost two years ago, I upgraded it to8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. Everything has been running smoothly until about 2 or so weeks ago. My computer has been having hard freezes, meaning, it's not simply an application freezing up; force quit doesn't work, the clock stops ticking, the whole system freezes. It was very predictable too. Whether i was watching youtube videos with flash, reading online articles without it (I have ad block) or doing something completely non-flash or web related, my computer would hard freeze after about an hour or two or so of use, requiring a hard reset (holding the power button until it turned off and then restarting).
I did some research on this and from what I initially found I thought it was problems with the motherboard. However, I found that to be odd because my motherboard was replaced by Apple in September 2012. I read somewhere to try a system hardware diagnostic test (press D upon start up). On the short hardware test, the one that only takes a few minutes, it passed without any problems. Then I tried the longer hardware test, the one that says takes more than an hour. I put that one on and left it alone. I came back every so often and checked on it and it was fine at first. The mouse responded and the test was showing some measurable progress. However I came back, and at 2 hours 11 minutes and 59 seconds into the hardware test, it froze without completing it.
Then I tried doing something everyone says to do when anything happens: I repaired disk permissions. I did that, and according to Disk utility everything went rather swimmingly. However, that didn't fix anything,in fact, it made things slightly worse. Ever since I reset disk permissions, everytime I open Safari, it freezes immediately, and that has only happened since I repaired disk permissions. My home page is about:blank, if anyone was wondering. I've only discovered this happening with Safari as of now. I switched Chrome as my primary web browser for now.
Being the resourceful person I am, I tried to isolate the problem. My sister, luckily, has an identical MBP. First, using target disk on my computer, I booted my SSD onto her computer - this is to see if the problem was HDD/SSD related or motherboard related. When I booted my SSD onto her computer the same problems occurred: Safari froze upon start up, and then computer would hard freeze after about two hours. However, when I booted her HDD onto my computer via target disk, there were no problems. Safari opened just fine and I used her computer for several hours without issue.
At this point, I was pretty sure it was the SSD, but I thought it was possibly a bad Sata cable or something. But nope. Last night, I switched harddrives completely. No target Disk. I put my SSD in her computer and put her HDD in my computer. I got the same results as target disk. It can't be the motherboard or memory, because both computers worked fine with my sisters harddrive. Only the computer booted off of the SSD would have these problems.
At this point I think it could be two possibilities
    A) Either the SSD itself is starting to become defective
    B) Some software component of my SSD is buggy
I think it could be something software related because why would Safari and safari only freeze after launch, but no other apps? Also something of note, these problems were happening, I tried to see if doing anything with software update would help, updated everything that needed to be updated, and these problems still occurred.
What do you guys think? anyone have an idea of what it could be? Any suggestions of how I handle this? Applecare is expired. I'm considering doing a clean install but I'm not fully backed up yet and I don't want to waste my time and have it not work. But I also don't want to buy a new hard drive or SSD and have it do the same things. And I'm not getting a new computer if the only problem with it is contained within the storage unit, whether that problem is within the software or hardware related.
Responses and suggestions would be highly appreciated, thanks.
EDIT: this information may be of interest: currently have 19.51 GB of available space (out of 256 GB). At one point, about a month and a half or so ago, my storage was as low as 9 or so GB free.
    I am running OSX 10.6.8

I have tried making a new user account like you suggested. It fixed the Safari problem; Safari opened and played video just fine. However, the computer still hard freezed after about 2 hours. I am about to back up my computer via time machine after this (hopefully it'll finish before it hard freezes again, I haven't backd up in more than a year). If that doesn't work, I guess I'll have to move folders individually onto an external. I will proceed after backup with a clean install as that is my only other option for now.
However, after a clean install, should I restore directly from time machine? I would think wiping the hard drive and replacing it with what's on time machine wouldn't solve the problem because the inherent corruption is being restored. However, what about just restoring my User folder? What would the process be for getting everything back to normal as quickly as possible? Do you know of any good ways to get my apps and other preferences back to normal ASAP without corrupting anything? Will I have to re-register anything? For example, I have Adobe CS4 that I received from my highschool IT department. I have since graduated, so I don't have the disc or any of the password codes. Would it be risky to restore the application support folder (because that's where the bug may lie)? Or if I just drag just drag apps, would that still work or is the application support necessary too?

  • I have a brand new MacBook Air 11 inch, 4gb RAM and 256 gb SSD where the screen flickered abnormally and got dead all of a sudden while uploading a photograph in FB. Can anybody help?

I have a new MacBook Air 11 inch, 4gb RAM, 256 SSD and use Mavericks OS. It is still under waranty period.
Just few days ago while I was uploading a photograph in facebook, the screen started flickering abnoromally. I tried using the escape button but nothing was working so switched off by pressing the power button.
After few minutes I tried to switch it on but my system never waked up. Called up the Apple Support, did SMC and PRAM but nothing worked. Then I was advised to take it to Apple's authorised service centre.
At the service centre the engineers diagnoised and then said that the MLB/mother board needs to be replaced. Had waited for six-long days and today they had replaced the MLB/mother board. Now, the system came to life but nothing has booted. The screen goes white and a '?' question mark icon keeps on flickering.
After thoroughly diagnoising it the engineer said that now the problem is with the SSD and the worse thing is all my important documents and photographs etc are no more there. And I don't have a backup of the same!
While Apple Support contact centre is assuring they would replace any other parts if found faulty, but I feel differently. First, the MLB/mother board was changed now they say it is SSD problem - so if the SSD too is replaced there are possibilities of more faults coming up. All I can see and feel that this particular machine has turned out to be architectually deffective that calls for immediate replacement.
Right now I am using a friend's windows pc to write this mail.
Feeling completely miserable - all my expectatations gone after investing in such an expensive machine, loss of all my data, wastage of time and energy and to top it all affecting my daily work.
Can anybody please advise what shall I do?

Take the system to an Apple store to be fixed or replaced as the one you have has defective hardware.

  • How do I use my SSD for apps and HDD for documents?

    Hi, everyone.
I just installed (myself) an Intel 120GB SSD into my 2011 iMac (3.4Ghz Quad-Core, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD). I kept the HDD.
I run Logic Pro 9 and have around 200GB of additional sample plugins (VSL Solo Strings, Ivory Grand Pianos, Superior Drummer, etc..) and
I want to know how I can successfully transfer the Apps (Logic, Sibelius, Pages, iTunes, etc...) onto my new SSD while keeping the plugins on my HDD and using them simultaneously.
I having been searching for a way to do this all day to no avail.
    Thanks! If you can help.
p.s. since some of the apps require registration, I cannot simply drag them to my SSD from the HDD and expect them to work. I get an error.

My suggestion is to move you entire home directory on to the hdd and leave the ssd for the os and your key applications.

  • Feb 2009 T500, SSD performance problems

I just bought an Intel X25-M 80GB drive (with the updated 8820 firmware) for read only database data files.  I installed an eSata ExpressCard 34 and put the drive in a Rosewill enclosure.  All of these items are rated at 3.0 Gb/s SATA speeds.  But, when I benchmarked the drive it flatlines at around 130 MB/s.  Oddly close to the SATA 1 or UDMA 6, so I looked into the device manager under "SCSI/Raid controllers" and found my SATALink controller.  It reads that the "Host Link Speed" is 3.0 Gb/s, but the current transfer mode is "Ultra DMA 6".  Is there a reason my new T500 laptop isn't able to run at the full speed of the ExpressCard?  I was looking forward to those 250 MB/s reads I've been reading about.

anti00Zero, thank you for your replies.  I have figured out what is going on with my situation.  It turns out that the SI processor chip on the eSata expressCard has a maximum throughput of 130 MB/s.  There is one other option that would provides a throughput of 200MB/s, but it costs $299.  It's not likely they will sell many of those cards, when one that provides 130 MB/s costs only $45.  In any event, I'll probably end up using the Intel X25 on my desktop because I dont want to have a $400 SSD go to waste at 130 MB/s.  Lenovo T500 is working great.

  • Ssd cache performance

At this point I can only image it will help but I am trying to decide if sdd cache on the 450r is going to have a better return on performance versus a ssd drive for swap files on my VMware host. Soon to be multiple hosts.  This is not a production box but a replica site I have pieced together from some new hardware and old,.
I would like to know if anyone has any performance metrics with ssd cache.  I am looking to get 2x256GB drives in a mirror.  This is a big project since I will have all my bays filled.  I would have to find a temp location for all my replicas break my raid and rebuild everything. I am not against it, I just want to know what I am looking at for percent of performance gains.  i know it will depend on what I plan on get setting cache policy to but I am planning on write around since most of our systems are read based.
    Any info is appreciated.
Also let me know if you anyone is using iSCSI over NFS and why.  I have heard a lot about read being way faster with iSCSI but since I can't have multiple hosts on an iSCSI volume am stuck with NFS for now.

I did try eSATA as well, the WD drive was able to do 150MB/s and 149MB/s, read and write respectively. (as the QM57 chipset natively supports SATA at 3Gb/s)
The issue here is as part of the decision process to get the W510, USB 3 capability came into consideration (for having more than 1 fast external storage device).
    EDIT:
Ultimately, what I'm really after is:
    1. Have I configured something incorrectly, or misconfigured something.  Or is there's some ideal component linkage I'm missing.
    2. Is the W510's USB 3.0, at the very least, capable of delivering 2.5GT/s?
    3. I may, or may not have to file a complaint to Lenovo or BBB for misleading marketing / sales info.
    2nd EDIT:
I do thank you for suggesting eSATA.  However, if Lenovo is going to reply to this, I simply won't take "use the touchpad instead" if the trackpoint isn't working properly.

  • New problem...SSD drive is no longer recognized

OK, I was having the memory issues so I went out and bought new memory that is supposed to be compatible (GSKILL 2x4 MB 1333 DDR3), and now I have a brand new problem.  My SSD is no longer recognized, so I can't boot my OS.  I've tried swapping ports, swapping cables, cleared CMOS...I even put the WINDOWS 7 Disc in to see if it would find the drive in the install screen, but it says no hard drive found.
Anybody know the issue I may be having now?

I had a similar issue, my BIOS wouldnt recognize my Intel X25 after a blue screen in AHCI mode.
In the BIOS I had to switch the controller type to Standard IDE. This made the drive visible again but to make it operable under AHCI, I had to use a Hex Editor from a DOS Boot Disk, and manually erase the first few sectors of the drive.
Then I could switch the controller back to AHCI in the BIOS and repartition/reinstall Windows - Until the next blue screen .
Obviously, doing this erases the MBR, allocation tables and partition table, and therefore makes ALL data on the drive inaccessible.

  • Mac Pro 2009 with SSD Problems since mavericks

I am having constant problems with my mac pro early 2009 since Mavericks. It is a standard mac pro but now has a crucial m500 ssd as the main drive.
I originally put a OWC 120gb SSD in then changed it for a 240gb OWC SSD as I blamed the SSD for my problems. Then recently I blamed OWC so bought a crucial SSD but still having all the same problems.
My list of problems (these happen 20+ times per day) I'm a web designer so use a lot of browsers and use the computer for 9+ hours per day:
Firefox is used as main browser. Every so often pages load but without loading the style sheet shortly followed by pages not loading at all. Then if I type an address and hit return it does nothing. Then opening Chrome pages work for a couple of seconds then that stops working too. Sometimes FF and Chrome don't work but safari does sporadically.
Chrome is unusable really as it crashes all the time.
During all these events, if I open certain apps (randomly) e.g. openeing system prefs it will 'fail to open' and show the crash report and reopen option which just continues with another crash report. At this stage a reboot is essential
Possibly related...if I wake computer from sleep, it takes about 5-8 seconds before I can do anything. I can see everything, move mouse etc... but if I try and click on an open tab it won't work until I wait about 8 seconds.
I don't think it is sleep related though as these browser problems happen after a reboot and no sleep. Hard disk is set to never sleep.
Here is a recent system prefs crash report.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Comparison of SSD with hard disk drives

    Attribute or characteristic
    Solid-state drive
    Hard disk drive
    Spin-up time
    Instantaneous.
May take several seconds. With a large number of drives, spin-up may need to be staggered to limit total power drawn.
    Random access time[45]
About 0.1 ms - many times faster than HDDs because data is accessed directly from the flash memory
Ranges from 5–10 ms due to the need to move the heads and wait for the data to rotate under the read/write head
    Read latency time[46]
Generally low because the data can be read directly from any location; In applications where hard disk seeks are the limiting factor, this results in faster boot and application launch times (see Amdahl's law).[47]
Generally high since the mechanical components require additional time to get aligned
    Consistent read performance[48]
Read performance does not change based on where data is stored on an SSD
If data is written in a fragmented way, reading back the data will have varying response times
    Defragmentation
SSDs do not benefit from defragmentation because there is little benefit to reading data sequentially and any defragmentation process adds additional writes on the NAND flash that already have a limited cycle life.[49][50]
HDDs may require defragmentation after continued operations or erasing and writing data, especially involving large files or where the disk space becomes low. [51]
    Acoustic levels
SSDs have no moving parts and make no sound
HDDs have moving parts (heads, spindle motor) and have varying levels of sound depending upon model
    Mechanical reliability
A lack of moving parts virtually eliminates mechanical breakdowns
HDDs have many moving parts that are all subject to failure over time
    Susceptibility toenvironmental factors[47][52][53]
No flying heads or rotating platters to fail as a result of shock, altitude, or vibration
The flying heads and rotating platters are generally susceptible to shock, altitude, and vibration
    Magneticsusceptibility[citation needed]
    No impact on flash memory
Magnets or magnetic surges can alter data on the media
    Weight and size[52]
The weight of flash memory and the circuit board material are very light compared to HDDs
Higher performing HDDs require heavier components than laptop HDDs that are light, but not as light as SSDs
    Parallel operation[citation needed]
Some flash controllers can have multiple flash chips reading and writing different data simultaneously
HDDs have multiple heads (one per platter) but they are connected, and share one positioning motor.
    Write longevity
Solid state drives that use flash memory have a limited number of writes over the life of the drive.[54][55][56][57] SSDs based on DRAM do not have a limited number of writes.
Magnetic media do not have a limited number of writes.
    Software encryption limitations
NAND flash memory cannot be overwritten, but has to be rewritten to previously erased blocks. If a software encryption program encrypts data already on the SSD, the overwritten data is still unsecured, unencrypted, and accessible (drive-based hardware encryption does not have this problem). Also data cannot be securely erased by overwriting the original file without special "Secure Erase" procedures built into the drive.[58]
HDDs can overwrite data directly on the drive in any particular sector.
    Cost
As of October 2010, NAND flash SSDs cost about (US)$1.40–2.00 per GB
As of October 2010, HDDs cost about (US)$0.10/GB for 3.5 in and $0.20/GB for 2.5 in drives
    Storage capacity
As of October 2010, SSDs come in different sizes up to 2TB but are typically 512GB or less[59]
As of October 2010, HDDs are typically 2-3TB or less
    Read/write performance symmetry
Less expensive SSDs typically have write speeds significantly lower than their read speeds. Higher performing SSDs and those from particular manufacturers have a balanced read and write speed.[citation needed]
HDDs generally have symmetrical read and write speeds
    Free block availability andTRIM
SSD write performance is significantly impacted by the availability of free, programmable blocks. Previously written data blocks that are no longer in use can be reclaimed by TRIM; however, even with TRIM, fewer free, programmable blocks translates into reduced performance.[25][60][61]
HDDs are not affected by free blocks or the operation (or lack) of the TRIM command
    Power consumption
High performance flash-based SSDs generally require 1/2 to 1/3 the power of HDDs; High performance DRAM SSDs generally require as much power as HDDs and consume power when the rest of the system is shut down.[62][63]
High performance HDDs generally require between 12-18 watts; drives designed for notebook computers are typically 2 watts.

I wish I could get my head round the SSD vs HDD with a NLE rig.  My builder is trying to persuade me to use a Toshiba 256Gb THNSNC256GBSJ for OS and programs, and it is only NZ$20 more expensive than the 450Gb 10k rpm VelociRaptor I was originally planing to use for the OS.  That sounds suspiciously cheap to me, and I am concerned about the finite writes to SSD - mainly because I don't really understand it.
The rest of the new build is
    3930K
    Gigabyte X79-UD5
    8 x DDR3 1600
    Coolermaster with 750W PSU
    Geforce GTX570
I plan to transfer the drives from my current system as a starting point, and reassess after giving it some use.  That means
Either the above SSD or 450Gb 10k Raptor for OS (new drives)
300Gb 10k rpm Raptor  (currently used for OS in old box)
150Gb 7k4 rpm Raptor (reserved for Photoshop Scratch in old box)
    2 x 1Tb WD Blacks (data drives)
    2 x 1Tb WD USB3 externals
I don't know how I would configure the drives in the new box, but have seen Harm's table and will try to follow his advice.  It's a dreadful thing to admit, but I don't have a backup strategy, and the above drives are well over half full. Well over!  And I am only just getting serious about video, (the rest is mainly CR2 files from my Canon 1Ds3 and 1D4)
I know it must be like banging your head against the wall, but should I avoid that SSD and go with the 450G Raptor?   I have read a comment that the WD Blacks don't work well as Raid0.  Is that BS or true?
I am about to give the go-ahead so need to confirm the spec.

  • Bit Locker on surface pro 3 ssd card

I had a surface pro 3 which I managed to damage. There was data on the ssd that I needed so I have got it out and connected it to my laptop by usb. When I try and use open it, it comes up with bit locker drive encryption so I need a bitlocker recovery
    key. help anyone?

Do you have the recovery key ? If you don't have it, I'm sorry to say but you'll loose all the data.

  • After I upgraded to Yosemite iphoto can't recognize my backup CDs which were created in iLife09. Ihave the original applications install disk and my old hard drive(I upgraded  to SSD). How do I get a n iphoto back to read by old CDs?

After I upgraded to Yosemite,iPhoto can't recognize my backup CDs created in iLife 09. The applications install disk won't install iphoto because iphoto 9.5 is already installed..I updated to a SSD and have the original Hard Drive with an updated iphoto which recognized the older CDs(thanks to iphoto expander). I thought that the iphoto that transferred with the new hard drive was the same as what was on the old one. I guess it wasn't. I really need to access my backups.   HELP

Later version of iPhoto write to the library on opening, and so cannot open libraries on optical media, as that cannot be written to. Further, optical media is going e way of the floppy disk. Therefore, you need to use a different form of archiving and back up going forward.
To allow iPhoto to open these libraries you need to copy them to your Mac or an attached external disk.
To merge them into an existing Library will require that you use either Aperture (if you have it) or iPhoto Library Manager.

  • How Do I Install an SSD Into My 15" Macbook Pro?

I have recently purchased a Crucial m4 2.5" SSD for my 15", mid-2010 Macbook Pro.  However, I rarely do any major hardware upgrades to any electronics of mine, so I'm really out of my element here.  From what I've heard and researched through online forums, physically installing the SSD shouldn't be that bad (just look out for the static electricity, apparently).  The rough bit looks to be transferring my operating system, OS X Lion, along with my various documents and files.  Now, my purchase came with a data transfer kit, but I don't know how to use it; like I said, really out of my element.  How do I move my operating system and files into the SSD properly, without accidentally losing everything?  I know Time-Machine is involved somehow, but what exactly do I do?  Any answer would be very appreciated, the more detailed and step-by-step oriented the better.
P.S.: I don't intend to keep my original HDD at all, so I'm not going to be doing any tinkering with the optical-drive/super-drive (I don't really know what such things do, so I want to keep screwing around with my Mac's innards to a minimum).

If you got the data transfer cable with your SSD, the procedure should be pretty simple - and there should be step-by-step instructions in the box. You're simply going to remove the bottom case of your computer (using a Phillips #00 screwdriver), take out the two screws in the bracket holding the hard drive into place (using same screwdriver), remove the drive and (use a Torx 6 screwdriver) remove the four screws that hold the hard drive in place. Then put in the SSD and reassemble the machine.
Then you'll plug up the old hard drive by using the SATA to USB cable and use the option key to boot from the old drive. I don't know what data transfer software Crucial provides, but I would recommend formatting the SSD  using Disk Utility from your old drive ("Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition) and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your old drive to your new SSD (see this user tip for cloning - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4122). You needn't worry about getting an enclosure since you have the data transfer cable and you don't want to use your old hard drive.
There are a number of videos on YouTube that take you step-by-step through this procedure - many specific to Crucial SSDs and their data transfer kit - do a little searching there if you're unsure of how to procede.

  • How do I install OSX onto a new SSD (in the place of my optical drive) without transferring all data across.  However, with the applications, system and library on the SSD to improve the speed, but keep non essential items (the home folder) on the HDD

I have a mid 2009 13 inch unibody 2.53GHz MacBook Pro.  I'm finding that it doesn't run as quickly as it used to.
A genius in the Apple store suggested that I replace my optical drive with an SSD, however only use the SSD for OSX, applications, system and library.  Keep all documents, pictures, music etc on the current hard drive.
I would be grateful if someone could help me with:
    1) installing OSX on the SSD without copying across data from the current hard drive
    2) transferring applications, system and library folders across to the SSD so that they still function
    3) changing my settings so that OSX reads the home folder from the current hard drive, as well as all the applications' data (documents, music etc...)
However, I would like to run iMovie, with all events etc solely from the SSD to speed up the process of editing movies.
If anyone could help with this, it would be much appreciated.

  • G510 install Win 8.1 on a smaller SSD. What files to copy.

Yesterday I got a new G510. The HD is not in good condition after dropping it.
I wanted to swap the 1TB HD 5200 rpm  anyways for my 120 GB SSD.
I can still get at the files on the original HD. What files and/or partitions do I need to copy to the SSD to get a clean Win 8.1 installation after inserting it in the Laptop?  Right now I have both the old HD and the new SSD on another pc. So I can use Reflect.
Please give the name of those partitions. Not the Drive letter. Because the drive is outside the laptop and the drive letters are different in a system with more HD's.
What is the minimum of files to copy to get a basic Win 8.1 without bloatwear?
    Thanks,
    Eric

    hi EricLagerstrom,
The partition table of the G510 is most likely similar to this picture.
AFAIK, it will not be an easy task to perform a clean installation of windows 8.1 on the SSD using the recovery image on the 1TB HDD as its a preconfigured OEM image (OS + Lenovo drivers, apps, and other preloaded softwares).
You can try to look into the recovery partition (last partition - approx 20GB), look for an install.esd file, convert it to install.wim and rebuild it without the preloaded softwares and try to re-image it on the SSD.
    - Link to picture
As an alternative, you can clone or migrate the HDD to the SSD and just uninstall the softwares that you don't like (without affecting system functionality).

  • ITunes Match won't recognize my MBA equipped with a new SSD

    Hi,
Here's the situation: I replaced the SSD in my late 2010 MBA to add storage space. Everything went perfectly well and I have been using it for weeks, no problem whatsoever with any of my iCould stuff - calednar entries, contacts etc. as everything was transferred over by making a back-up of the old SSD onto the new one and re-instlaling Mavericks to the new one.
I also have been using iTunes Match for years and love it: ATV, IOS devices are all connected and work perfectly. Until I tried using iTunes Match on the MBA equipped with the new SSD. Note that my iTunes music (not the library file) sits in an external drive connected to my Home network which I don't currentl have access to. That's also teh reason why I signed up for Match: once synced, I didn't have to connect to tht drive and could travel while still having access to all my music.
The library only sees two local songs that were downloaded recenrly after I purchased them on the iTunes Store. I'm still using the same Apple ID nothing changed, but iTunes isn't showing any of my iTunes Match songs in there. I checked Match had been turned on (it is), I checked that I didn't max out on the number of devices (I haven't) and even checked availability of iTunes Match in other countries (temporarily in France), but otherwise residing in the US.
So now, when I try to "add this computer" to iTunes Match, it gives me the following error:
Only one library can be matched at a time. If you continue, the other iTunes Match session will be stopped and this computer's library will be matched instead.
=> Seeing that the "old" library and the "new" one technically come from the same Mac (only now it has a new SSD drive), I'm at a loss and scared to have all of my previously synced/matched songs deleted from itunes Match if I only sync the two local files that were just downloaded/purchased.  <=
Would appreciate any help or suggestions please.
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi,
You often get this message when match thinks that you already have a match in progess on another computer.
If you are happy that all your music is on your new hard drive (or if it is only in the cloud), you should select "this computer".
