No SSID Broadcast (or connect) even when SSID broadcast is enabled on my WRT54GL?

I own a WRT54GL, Firmware is 4.30.12 (the latest).
I used to be able to connect with the router just fine, 801.11g, WEP security.  Recently wireless connectivity stopped working (wired ports are working just fine, with both internal network and Internet access [external]).  I just got around to trying again tonight...
It seems that my notebook computer does not *see* the wireless router.  I tried connecting with SSID broadcast off (like I used to)... didn't connect.
I turn on SSID broadcast and even changed my SSID name on the router, and saved the config... but my notebook's "wireless networks" dialog still does not show my router (but it does show 5 of my neighbor's routers).
What would make an SSID not show up on my client "wireless network" dialogs, even though I tell the router to broadcast it?
Has the wireless portion of my WRT54GL simply died?

Please don't take this as an arguement, but I don't understand the logic of your troubleshooting steps.
I have no problems with Internet access, and my wired network works perfectly.  So there seems no point in expanding the problem to include my broadband modem, right?  My problem seems pretty well isolated (for now) to my WRT54GL only, since it is the immediate device that my notebook is unable to connect with (or see).
My firmware is the latest and was updated before I posted (see version # in my original post).  I has already recycled the power.  I didn't try the reset button... will try that next, but am not very hopeful :-(

  • I have two airport extremes, one acting as amodem and the other operating in bridge mode.  The extremes are connected using ethernet, but remain connected even when I disconnect the Cat5a cable. How do I know if they are operating wired or wirelessly

I have two airport extremes, one acting as a modem and the other operating in bridge mode.  The extremes are connected using ethernet, but remain connected even when I disconnect the Cat5a cable (I did this to check that the 100 feet of Cat 5a cable connecting them was working). How do I find out if they are operating wired or wirelessly?  I want to know as I assume I will get much better speeds if they are wired.

Hi Bob, many thanks for the prompt response.  I think I did what you suggested, but you're the expert so I have sent over a few screenshots.  The extreme in question is High Birches Home Office (the rest of the network has been in place and working well for some time).  My new home office is going to be in the garden, circa 100 feet from the main house.  I have installed armoured Cat5e cable down to the shed that is going to be adjacent to the home office once built and situated the High Birches Home Office Airport Extreme there temporarily.  Everything works well, so I was surprised when I unplugged the ethernet, that it still worked.  I also tested the ethernet cable by switching off my laptop's wifi and unplugging the cable from the airport extreme and directly into the laptop and that worked ok.
If the screenshots below (I did every Airport utility tab for the High Birches Home Office) don't tell you anything more, then the set-by-step instructions would greatly appreciated so I can ensure I completed the steps correctly.
    Many
    Thanks, Greg.

  • Shares auto connect even when password is not saved in Keychain

I have shares setup on on a 10.5.6 server and I can connect without issue.
When I disconnect then reconnect, it automatically logs in even though I
did not save the password in the Keychain.
Restarting the Mac clears this and requires me to type in the password again.
Anyone know how to prevent this? I don't want to login to a user's computer
with my admin credentials leaving them with the ability to automatically
log back in without knowing the password.

Changed AFP settings from "Any" to "Standard" DOH!

  • I upgraded my Airport Express from g to n and now my older desktop running 10.5.8 cannot connect even when I supply the correct password. Do I need to update the airport in the 10.5.8 system? What version is recommended?

I recently replaced my Airport Express (11g) to one running 11n. My iMac running 10.4.11 uded to work fine with 11g but now cannot connect to the 11n Airport Express.  I can see the network listed and it asks for a WAP2 password, but when I supply the password it fails to connect.
Do I need to upgrade the airport software on the iMac, and to which version.

    Tesserax,
Thank you for the suggestions. I tried first setting the radio mode to 802.11b/g compatible using the Option key hint that you supplied, but I got the same error message when I tried to join the network from my older Mac. (I apologize for saying in error that it was running 10.5.8, it was actually running 10.4.11--the last version that still supported Classic--and is a G4 PPC machine.)
The attempt to login to the network from the PPC machine gave me the standard log-in prompt, but I noticed that it asked for the WAP password, and my two other machines--both Intel MacBooks--get asked for the WAP2 password. The first time I noticed this I was still thinking the "error in trying to join the network" was a function of the 802.11n setup.
When your first suggestion didn't work, I reset the base station back to the original 802.11n (b & g compatible) but got the same error message--asking for a WAP password--so I went back into the setup, and selected the WAP/WAP2 Personal menu selection, restarted the base station, and was able to successfully join the network!
Your tip led me to the right place to fix my problem, Thank You,
    Bill Pratt

  • The wifi is always connected even when screen is off.

The wifi is always connected. Earlier the wifi connection used to get disconnecetd after few minutes if phone is not used. I wish which of the settings are to be used so that wifi gets off automatically if phone is not used.

Wifi will turn off, or go to sleep when the phone goes into sleep mode unless the phone is actively using wifi for something, such as downloading. It will remain connected if the device is plugged into power.
What makes you think the wifi is "always connected"?

  • Home Hub 3 WiFi - poor connection even when 2 metr...

My Home Hub 3's WiFi has always been **bleep** but lately it seems to be getting worse. Most of my devices are connected via Ethernet and are fine but my WiFi devices suffer problems: poor speeds, high/fluctuating pings, web pages slow to load.
    Laptop (WiFi):
    Speed test = 31 ms ping, 4.6 Mbps down, 7.0 Mbps up Google.co.uk ping = 27 ms, 48 ms, 301 ms, 14 ms
    Server (Ethernet):
    Speed test = 10 ms ping, 64.4 Mbps down, 16.3 Mbps up Google.co.uk ping = 8 ms, 8 ms, 8 ms, 8 ms
My server is actually busy doing networking stuff during this, yet has an excellent connection. The laptop's connection is pitiful, with pings all over the place (presumably due to constantly dropping packets). I actually managed to fix this last night by switching from 801.11b/g to 801.11b/g/n on the Home Hub but that didn't last since I'm having the same issues today. I've tried choosing automatic WiFi channel and switching manually to the least busy channel (1/6/11), and I've tried changing from 20 Mhz to 40 Mhz. Neither has any effect. I've also tried rebooting the router, which doesn't help.
I know it's a problem with the Home Hub since it happens with both of my phones also. Plus it occasionally seems to work fine. Is it just dying? I haven't ever moved it from its current position, which is in the centre of my flat.

up to you but using any of the other available channels does help in the majority of cases

  • AnyConnect Client shows 'Connected' even when it is not

    Hello,
We have one Windows 8 user, with AnyConnect Client version 3.1.05152 (but we've seen this with a previous version).  He generally does not disconnect  his client, so it will time out at some point during the night, according to our logs.    However, several hours later, the client still indicates that it is connected.  Has anyone else seen this, and found a solution for it?
    Thanks

  • WRT54G Strange connection issue when wireless security is enabled

The model # is WRT54G v2.2 with firmware 4.21.1. I knew that my internet connection was good because I connected my laptop directly to the wireless antenna. When the antenna is connected to my wireless router I can't connect, wired or wireless. I decided to reset the router and program back in the changes that I have made. I checked for internet connection after the reset, it's there. Made more changes, still good. Then when I enabled wireless security using WEP the wired and wireless internet connection goes away. Any ideas to fix this. Can I go back to the previous version of firmware?

hi... go to ftp.linksys.com/pub/network and try downloading older firmware for the router and downgrade the firmware, after that reset the router back to factory default settings and reconfigure it...

  • Macbook Pro cannot connect to the internet even when others can

Hi! Please help me. We have an internet WIFI connection in our office but only my MacBook Pro cannot connect even when I entered the correct password. My Iphone and Ipad work just fine. It says "connection timeout" but all other laptops can connect. I tried network diagnostics already and it always say "connection timeout". I dont know what to do anymore.

Yes, and when I open the Network Utility it shows a working IP address, and a 54Mb/s speed from the wireless router. It even shows the shared computers from my roomates. But when I try to access the internet it does not load anything on Safari or Firefox ( or any other internet application for that matter). It is completely unconnected. YET, As soon as I activate the AirPort card on the top right where I have my signal strength, it shows on the Network Utility information that there are 'packages' being sent and received, and I have NO programs open what so ever, I have closed everything except finder and network utility... Does this mean I am being hacked, or have some sort of Trojan or something in my computer? I ran an antivirus that my school provided, called Virex by McAfee, it came out clean except it says it cannot read one file.
I tried repairing my disk, and that did not work either. I did the Ram reset like you suggested, but that also did not work. I doubt it being a hardware error. I am going to try to connect it to an ethernet cable to see if that will work. Then I will let you know what happens with that, but that would still not be a solution since I need it wireless, cause the router is in another part of the house.
Thank you for your help, and I hope we can get this sorted out.

  • WRT160N and intermittent internet connections (even wired!!!)

I just purchased and installed the LinkSys WRT160N router to replace an older Netgear wireless 'G' router.
The reason for the replacement / upgrade was simply to have the wireless signal reach the rest of my house.  We do not have any 'N' receivers/adapters in our devices.
After installing the router, email works fine, but internet access is spotty.
Most of the time when I navigate to a new page, I have to "refresh" multiple times.
My ISP (Comcast) says that everything is fine from their end.
I have powered off and on my modem, router, PC's, etc. countless times and yet cannot get a consistent connection even when directly wired to the router.
Before I return this router and try another brand, I thought I'd post a message here to see if there are any suggestions.  I have not upgraded the firmware and am using the router as purchased two days ago.
I am using Firmware version 2.0.02 and the router is WRT16oNv2.

I have had the same problem...with the same model (WRT160N) for months now (since I bought it). No Problems on the end of our ISP either. Our problem is ONLY when it is wired. My PC is wired to the router. Xbox 360 used to be wired but problems were solved when we bought an adapter for it. All of our wireless works fine. My husband refused to return it since he had no trouble with his Iphone or laptop. The PC still gets shotty connection. We have talked with tech support at both Linksys and Geek Squad (they set up security options for us) with no avail. They had us try everything and nothing worked. Now my solution is to unplug the router and wire my pc to the modem...hoping he will get irritated enough to buy another router and brand when he has to plug it all back in to use his laptop or Iphone. Sad, we bought this one because we heard it was the best! I guess we should have done more homework on it.
I got on here today hoping to find new ways to fix this problem that we haven't tried. So far, no luck. I'm starting to think it has nothing to do with some setting changes and it is just a bad piece of equipment.

  • Wireless Keyboard and Mouse connection lost when computer wakes up

Every time my computer wakes up I get the message "Connection Lost" referring to the mouse (Mighty Mouse) and keyboard. I have to wait a couple of seconds for them to start working. I tried to remove them from the list of Bluetooth devices and then pair them again, but had no success. It's pretty annoying to have this happening everytime the computer wakes up.
Is anybody else experiencing this? Any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    richard

I have this issue as well, and havn't found a sufficient answer on the forums as of yet.
I can pair my mouse every day, and it will work fine, until I leave it at night when my computer shuts down. When I return in the morning I have no mouse, and have to go back to the bluetooth setup wizard and re-pair the mouse by turning it off then on again. I can't even just come in and turn the mouse off and on and have it work. I have to actually go through the setup wizard.
I CAN however, go to the bluetooth preferences, click on the mouse, and choose "connect" when it is turned off, then turn it on and it will connect without having to re-pair, but this is just as tedious and annoying as the whole setup process.
It's so annoying to have to have a wired mouse plugged in just so I can pair my wireless mouse every morning. Kind of defeats the purpose of a wireless mouse.
When I orginally bought the mouse and keyboard I had to return the original mouse because it wouldn't hold a connection even when I was using it. Obviously these wireless mice of Apple's need some more TLC in the engineering dept.
