No startup after force quit during 10.5.6 installation

During installation of the 10.5.6 update I had to force quit the installation as the installation froze due to the an error message - can't remember what it was but was something to do with application memory? Was doing update from downloaded file on stick!
Now I can't start up the Mac at all - it get to the apple logo and then shuts down. Started up using Leopard disc. Tried to use disk utilities but it won't let me use disk repair. Verify - states invalid sibling link - volume check failed.
Of course I haven't backed up for about 4 months!
Any ideas what I can do?
Thanks

Try the following;
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If DU cannot fix the sibling link error (it may not) and you don't have Disk Warrior then you may attempt this suggestion: Fix Invalid Sibling Link.
If these all fail then you will have to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X from scratch. You may be able to recover your personal files if your computer has a Firewire port, and you have access to another Mac with a Firewire port. You can then use Target Disk Mode to try and access the drive on your computer and copy off your personal files.

  • Premiere freezing and delayed playback, plays audio after force quit

I'm working with 350 hours of AVCHD c100 and h264 from 5D. The media is on a thunderbolt RAID 1 and I'm running CC 2014 on a 2014 Mac Pro with 6 cores, 3gb GPU and 32GB ram.
After about an hour of editing, I get delayed playback, and delayed response from keyboard or trackpad input. I can save - and after that I've waited up to a half an hour while the program is frozen. If it froze during playback, the audio continues to play through the system even after force quit. The only way to start over is a system restart.
any ideas? I've had trouble moving projects in the past, and media cache issues were to blame for similar symptoms, but it's much worse this time

First two things to check are permissions and prefs.
Prefs: go to Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro/8.0 and rename the folder "<username>-Profile." When you launch PPro, all new prefs will be written.

  • After force quitting iTunes, now my phone is "in use" by another user

OK, here's what just happened to me tonight. I had the "beach ball of death" in iTunes, so I used a force quit. Now when I plug in my week old iPhone 4, I'm getting the message that this phone is already in use by another user on this computer. Huh?!? For one thing, I am the ONLY user although I do have a "guest" account, but I'm logged in on my regular account.
I've tried restarting iTunes, same message. Every time I plug in the phone it's doing it now. So, how am I supposed to sync my phone now?
Has anyone else had this problem after force quitting iTunes? Any ideas?

Nope, tried that, didn't work. 3 complete reboots didn't worked either. However, on the 4th complete computer reboot, it worked!! I don't know why, but I'm happy that I can sync again.
I guess it just reinforces the old, "if at first you don't succeed...."

Hello: Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
Could you specify the Mac OS X version and also what computer you
are using it on, with some detail? Some of these kinds of issues, while
they may seem the same across various years of OS X, can have
different causes and also different cures.
With that information, someone may be capable of researching a reply
most suited to try & see if it works in your computer + OS X system.
One idea, which may/may not help, would be to start the computer
from its most recent OS X DVD install disc, unless it has OS X 10.7
or Later, where there is a Recovery partition on the HDD to boot from.
Then use Disk Utility> repair disk, while there, also repair permissions.
    Thanks.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Preview is STILL frozen even after force quitting, rebooting and reopening. Help?!? I need to see my files!

Not sure what I did, but Preview continues to stay frozen even after force quitting, rebooting and reopening. It seems like it is trying to open all 720 pdf documents I have on my internal memory. That's my best guess... I really don't know what happened. I've tried clicking the 'close windows when closing application' option under general settings and every other thing I've seen listed on help sites... nothing is working. PLEASE HELP?!?

Back up all data. Quit Preview if it's running.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following items, if they exist:
    Containers/com.apple.Preview
    Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist
    Saved Application State/com.apple.Preview.savedState
Log out and log back in. Launch the application and test.

i was working on a document with pages. while transferring files from USB, the 'pinball' thing popped up for the longest time which lead me to force quit the document. the document had been saved before quitting. however, my macbook starts to reboot, and after rebooting that specific file is missing. Before it quit, it says that the file is locked and asked me to create a duplicate, which i clicked yes to.

  • ARD 3.6.1 freezing during scans, now won't open after force quit

    All,
ive been an ardent user of ARD since the beginning, but with ARD 3.5 and above, i've noticed the console freezing more often.
I 'm presently running ARD 3.6  on a mid 2009 13 inch MBP running 10.8.1. I have about 1000 machines managed by this unit.
Yesterday while scanning subnets, it froze... I force quit ARD, and now, i'm getting a spinning cursor after launch in every account on the Mac. Never displays the Computers window.
I've repaired permissions, run disk utility, and even reset ACLS on my home folder to see if it was a i/o or permissions error.  My keychain verifies.
I ran the 3.6.1 updater as a last ditch attempt, and it did nothing...
Any thoughts? I'd hate to scrap all the user's i have already captured with this mac and start again.....
    thanks in advance

As I said before, reinstalling AppleWorks rarely solves any problems with AppleWorks. 99+% of the time the trouble lies in the user's account, either full recent items & AutoSave folders or corrupt preferences.
The message you got trying to update to AppleWorks 6.2.9 means the update can't find a copy of AppleWorks for that updater to update. The most common reason is that the language of the updater doesn't match the language of the installed version of AppleWorks 6. This particularly applies to the two English versions. There are several websites with links to incorrect updaters. The UK Apple site in particular has been known to point to the north American updater for quite some time. The most reliable links are on this page where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation.
Whenever you do an update of the system software &/or AppleWorks, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences).
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks' preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences & delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Then, in this same Preferences folder, find and open the folder AppleWorks Preferences, then delete all of the enclosed files (except the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.

  • AppleWorks won't open after force quit

I recently had to force quit after my computer locked up during the optomizing phase of a software update. I just realized that AppleWorks 6 won't open. I've tried several of the suggestions found in this forum: restart, dump the preferences, run repair disk, and repair disk permissions. I've tried to reinstall from my original AppleWorks disk, but am not able to launch the install application on the disk. Any other suggestions?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

How old is your AppleWorks install disk? On earlier versions the installer requires Mac OS 9.x.x to run (although it will install both Mac OS 9 and OS X versions of AppleWorks). Mac OS 9 is not supported on the intel based Macs.
Using that install disk, you should be able to install AppleWorks onto a machine that does support Mac OS 9 either directly or through the Classic environment.
Once it's installed, download and run the updater if the installed version is not either AW 6.2.4 or AW 6.2.9 (See note below). Then burn the whole AppleWorks 6 folder and its contents onto a CD, transfer the CD to your MacBook and copy the folder to the Applications folder on the MacBook. AppleWorks will create new preference files as it needs them.
To stay within the terms of the User agreement, you should delete the AppleWorks 6 folder from the Mac OS 9 machine used as an interim step in the process.
    UNINSTALLATION
The basic uninstallation is pretty simple—drag the AppleWorks 6 folder from Applications to the Trash.
Because you also want to reinstall, you should also delete the preferences files described in Peggy's post.
If you were NOT reinstalling, you might also want to delete the AppleWorks User Data folder in your Documents folder.
    Regards,
    Barry
*AW 6.2.4 is the earliest version that is stable in OS X. It is also able to open some older AppleWorks and ClarisWorks files that cannot be opened using AW 6.2.9. AW 6.2.9 is the most recent, and apparently the last, version of AppleWorks for Macintosh. It contains a number of bug fixes, many of them removing bugs introduced in the 6.2.7 update, and adds support for scrollwheel mice. AW 6.2.7 is quite buggy and should be avoided. See also Peggy's first post in this thread.

  • IPhoto doesn't update to modified pics after force quit

iPhoto didn't respond to my 'quit' command, so I chose to +force quit+ it. Before I did so, iPhoto had a problem connecting to Facebook, which seemed to cause iPhoto not being able to quit (this happened to me several times recently, and I always had to end up force quitting iPhoto). Every time I clicked on an album under FACEBOOK on the left column of the iPhoto application window, an error message came up saying +"Facebook authentication with server failed. Please check your login and password information."+ I thought perhaps stopping iPhoto from syncing with Facebook would help, so I +removed my Facebook account from iPhoto+, in an attempt to set up the connection again where I would re-enter my login and password information.
However, after this, when I clicked on a photo and then clicked the Facebook botton on the bottom right corner, then clicked *Set Up* in the message box to +set up iPhoto to publish to Facebook+, the Facebook login box never completed loading (it was all white and plank besides the loading bar on the bottom which never exceeded loading more than about 12%). I waited for more than half an hour and the loading didn't process any longer, so I closed the box. I tried this for several times in the next few hours and the same loading problem came up each time.
In the mean while, the Faces under LIBRARY in iPhoto had an +updating circle+ next to it which seemed never able to end the search. So I did some search over the Internet to find solutions to the problem, and came across with this: _http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2444899_.
The problems now were that 1) iPhoto could not load me to the Facebook login page for me to re-enter my Facebook information for iPhoto; and 2) iPhoto could not quit.
Because the solution posed on the above link has a first step of "quit iPhoto", so I force quitted iPhoto and followed the 1) to 6) processes stated in that thread (i.e.: removed ~/Library/Caches/, ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist, and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist to trash; deleted iphoto.apple.com inside Keychain Access; restarted computer; and launched iPhoto again).
This time I could come to the Facebook login page on iPhoto, and quit iPhoto for no problem. However, I now find that some of the pictures I edited within iPhoto before force quitting do not show the modified versions when I open them, even though the +modified versions+ are shown in thumbnails and they can be located in +iPhoto library+ (~/iPhoto Library/Modified/year*/album name/picture name*). The other weird thing is - the problem does not occur to all photos I edited before force quitting (e.g. for two photos I edited one after another, one has the problem and the other does not).
I did some search over the Internet before posting this message, and found one to be a possible solution to my problem: _http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2771968&tstart=15_
Nevertheless, I'm a bit resistent to downloading +iPhoto Library Manager+ in thinking of the down sides of doing so, if there are any. What would be the best way to solve my current problem? How could I get iPhoto to recognize and link to the modified photos instead of the original files? By the way, I did not have this problem before force quitting iPhoto.
Thank you in advance for all your inputs!

i'd like to keep all modified files because it took me quite some work to edit the pictures
Then recover them from the damaged Library and import them to the new one. That said, remember they will be treated as "new" photos, not as edited versions of the others. There is no way to recreate that link.
    1) Would it be bad for me to keep working with my old iPhoto library?
This library is corrupted. It is known to be damaged. The chances of dataloss are greatly increased. You will have more problems. Personally, I wouldn't.
    2) How to *back up*? And I assume it should be conducted regularly?
    *Most Simple Back Up:*
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    *Slightly more complex:*
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
*I'm Serious about Back Ups.* +And you should be too.+
My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.
    3) Should I un-do the removal of ~/Library/Caches/, ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist, and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist, as well as the delete of iphoto.apple.com inside Keychain Access?
    No.

  • Lost ability to access iTunes via Airport after Force Quit - Network issue?

I am not sure if this is iTunes or networking related, but all other networking appears ok.
First my setup: multiple machines use iTunes library from an external HD connected to Airport Extreme, OS 10.4.11, iTunes 7.6.2.
I had been updating ratings in the iTunes library on the external drive connected to the AE and I was connected to the AE via Ethernet with Airport Card on PB turned off. I went to move the PB to another location so I turned Airport Card on and disconnected the Ethernet cable with the iTunes app and database open (dumb move apparently). The iTunes app appeared to lock up along with the PB, I was able to force quit thru it, and now I have an unresolved issue that has me stumped.
After numerous restarts of the PB, I can access the iTunes library on this AE server via the ethernet connection (as it was before attempting to move), and all of the ratings I had changed appear to have been saved. But I can not get iTunes to access the library via wireless (Airport Card).
I have restarted the AE and the connected drive both. I have restarted the PB numerous times. If I login on PB with ethernet connected there is no issue, if I login with airport active only there is an issue. All attempts to start iTunes and accessing the library wirelessly result in no success, sometimes can quit normally, sometimes must force quit. I can option start iTunes to access/create library on internal drive and also can create a new library on the external AE server. Also all other wireless networking activity regarding that server has no issue (access , copy, move files etc...)
I've tried removing iTunes pref files in user library and that didn't fix anything. The application itself works fine with the database when connected via ethernet or with internal library.
Anyone have any clues or suggestions on where I should turn to try and fix this? I can try to provide more details if needed, but I am stumped short of potentially aggravating the issue with re installs and other potential attempts that may not even be related to the issue.
    Thanks

No disk maintenance recently. I have a week old backup of the entire iTunes folder along with the Library. I tried moving that backup Library (file only) into the AE server location but that did not change anything in terms of access.
I am on lunch break so no time to try your suggestions immediately, but will later this evening. I had thought about trying with a new user but hadn't gone there yet. I also have a G4 iMac ethernet connected all the time to the AE, but it has a AE card also typically not in use. I tried accessing with the iMac machine wirelessly, and although it progressed further (got the iTunes menu bar to display - never even got that on the PB), iTunes was not able to load which makes it almost seem not machine specific but rather something with the AE settings or the usb connected drive, but again all is fine there via ethernet.
Last night after original post, on the PB, I thought about a corrupted keychain type thing perhaps not allowing file access wirelessly, and I did have something to repair there, but it did not solve the issue.
Again, thanks for the suggestions and I'll try later tonight. Let me know if my additional info sheds any further light or if it would indicate that the suggestions were on the wrong track.

    Fixed it.
It is OS based problem, since MAC Lione store application state when closing
    it.
    Solution Steps:
1- Move to trash OOo from application folder.
2- The Library folder is hidden by default so use chflags nohidden ~/Library/
    command to unhide it.
3- Move to trash all files which contains OOo in there name from users Library
    folder and sub folders.
    4- Reinstall OOo.

    MB Pro 8,1 OS 10.6.8
Computer froze while Sophos Anti-Virus was updating. I force-quit everything. Finder would not restart. Used the Shut Down command from the apple menu, everything went well until I reached the background-picture-only stage of shutdown. It froze there and the power button is inop. Shows options to shut down or restart, but will do neither.
    IDEAS?

Sometimes after an update, you may have to wait awhile for it to shut down. The other day I was about to force mine to quit after waiting around 2-3 minutes. Finally it shutdown. After rebooting, it's working fine now.
You maybe just didn't give it enough time to finish what it was doing before shutdown.

  • Missing edited photos from iPhoto after Force Quit

I just lost about 50 photos.  I'm using a separate application to edit my photos before transferring them to my iPhoto Library.  A couple hours in to editing I received an error message and had to force quit both iPhoto and my other photo editing app.  I had been adding each photo I edited to iPhoto as I went along, then deleted the unedited version (emptying my trashcan also).  After reopening iPhoto, all the pictures I had edited were gone and the original versions were back in the library.
Any clues as to how this happened and if it's possible to retrieve my edited photos?

Why are you deleting the unedited versions?
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • How to uninstall BESAgent? Resumes after force-quitting.

I visited stanford university for a couple days over a year ago and they made me install "BigFix" - https://itservices.stanford.edu/service/bigfix
Today, a process called BESAgent is 100% of my CPU constantly (based on what Activity Monitor is showing me). I reinstalled BESAgent, and it went down to 0% for 10 seconds, then went back to 100. I tried to quit the process using Acitivity monitor but it didn't work. So I force quit it using activity monitor. It came back after 5 seconds and was at 100%. Shutting down and restarting didn't help either.
I found instructions from IBM for uninstalling, but it is outdated. They say the uninstaller should appear in the installation.dmg file, but the file has been switched with a pkg file (which I used to re-install the thing, but that didn't help). The outdated uninstall instructions are here: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21505762
Is there a way to make Activity Monitor prevent BESAgent from starting?  Does anyone know how to uninstall this?? Any help would be appreciated!

I am guessing you are in the wrong "Library" folder because the correct library folder on my mac does not have a "Safari" folder like yours. You need to find the other Library folder.
Go to Finder. Click the "Go" menu, and click on "Go to folder...".
Then type /library and click on Go. It should open a finder window.
Sort the list of folders alphabetically by clicking on "Name."  That should make it easier to find the BESAgent. If it is not there, then repeat everything again except type /users/johnny except replace "johnny" with the user's name and try to find BESAgent in the Library folder there.
