No startup: blank screen, power light on, fans normal speed

iMac G5 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, OSX 10.5, 17". Bought in October of 2005. Two matched Samsung 1GB RAM chips installed quite some time ago with no problems.
While it isn't the iSight model, my iMac has done the blank screen with fast spinning fan thing a few times, but it always recovers after I turn it off. Here's what happened:
iTunes is playing, I pause it using the Play/Pause button on the new wireless aluminum keyboard, it sits for a while and the screensaver comes on. I press the Play/Pause button on the keyboard again, the screensaver freezes and the fans spin up to maximum speed. I hold the power button down, it shuts off, I turn it on again and get nothing. It now powers up to a blank screen, fans at normal speed, the power light stays on, and the CD drive never makes its little startup noise. Holding the power button down does nothing, I have to pull the power cable out to turn it off. The only thing it has done differently since this happened is one time the power light didn't come on, otherwise no change. I also tried all of the different key combinations on startup (using the USB keyboard) and get no response, so no target disc or safe modes. Also, the CD drive won't accept any discs, so I can't start from the system discs.
I don't want to pay for any expensive or major repair work since I was going to get a new iMac this Fall anyway. If anybody has any clever do-it-yourself tricks I'm wide open to them. Otherwise it looks like I'll just get a hard drive enclosure kit and get all of my stuff off that way.
Help please!

First, you may still be eligible for one of Apple's Repair extension programs also, try resetting the SMU.
Let us know what happens,

  • Imac freezes on startup grey screen and really loud fans

My Imac G5 non intel 20" freezes on startup grey screen and really loud fans start and it won't boot. just have the logo on the grey screen.
I've tried resetting Pram - think that was the right thing to do?
I've tried disk utility, but it won't settle for me to choose the hard drive, it kind of sticks and keeps rotating the wheel.
    any ideas anyone?
    please help.

Lots of things you can try - first, try resetting the SMU. Next, boot from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and try to verify and repair your hard drive. If that doesn't work, try running the Apple Hardware Test on one of your install discs.
Also, depending on which model you have, you may be eligible for Apple's power supply or video and power issues.

My mac mini only shows a steady power light and fan noise when powered up. No video or sound and no commumication with wired keyboard or optical mouse. Tried replacing internal battery and resetting PMU/SMC but nothing seemed to happen.  Any suggestions? Many thanks! Richard

You've already done the two things I would have suggested.
If your Mini has an internal battery then I assume it's a G4. That means you've gotten a lot of good years of service from it, and it's old enough that it's certainly not covered by AppleCare anymore, and it's probably not worth spending money trying to repair it.
You should be able to tear it apart using instructions from ifixit.com to get the hard drive out, and then put the hard drive into a nice USB or FireWire enclosure (I like the ones from Other World Computing, macsales.com) so you can transfer your data to a replacement Mac.
I hope someone has another suggestion for you.

Few days ago, I get a problem with my laptop, below are the symptome when I push my laptop power button:
    1) Screen backlight on but no display on screen
    2) Fan turns on for 2 seconds, and then turn off
    3) Power light stay on as long as I again push the power button again
    4) Wifi light turn "Orange"
    5) Harddrive, and DVD drive shows sign of power-on for the whole period, even I can eject the DVD tray...
But get no display on screen, even when I connect with external screen, and fan stays off.
Can i get any help from experts out there?
    Thanks

Have you tried connecting an external monitor to your notebook, to see if there is a display?
Since your computer does not automatically shut down again until you press power again, it is possibly the display itself that is the problem.

  • X205-S7483 Won't Boot, Power Light on, Fans Off, HDD Off, Screen Black, CD Drive doesn't open.

I gave my Toshiba X205-S7483 to my brother to use and about a year ago I was told it wasn't working anymore. He says it was his son who was about 3 at the time who broke it so I don't know what was done. I don't notice anything obvious. I couldn't work on it at the time and a friend of my mom offered to take a look at it. This guy must have been after something else because he took it apart and gave me back a bag of parts. I have to laugh at bs like that because life is too short. So the laptop stayed as a bag of parts for about a year. Sad I know. Reminds me of the old Pixar movie about the sad little Lamp and toaster. Anyways, I decided to make an effort to bring this baby back to life. I took the time and put it back together. The problem is still there but I believe everything is there and I didn't break anything else. I have been reading around in the forums and the only other posts I have found refer to a situation where the CD drive works, the fans spin and the Hard drive fire up. In some the computer doesn't post. However in my situation I have a power light which leads me to believe the MotherBoard has power but I don't have anything else really. The battery light and charge lights are working as well. I used a multi meter to verify proper voltage at the charger output. I have yet to pull it back apart enough to test voltages on the motherboard. If anyone has any advice on what to look at specifically that would be awesome. I plan on checking for a fuse around the power supply. Only other thought is to buy another board. I would like to fix this if I can. I like to tinker so I'm in no hurry.

Have you tried running it on an external monitor?  If the lights work, fan spins, etc, but you have no display, even with an external monitor, it's either a video card or motherboard issue.

  • Black screen, power light malfunction.

So this is first time this has happened. I went and opened my older model black MacBook and the screen was black. However I knew it was working because I could hear the volume toggles move as I pressed them. However the brightness keys did nothing. Also the power indicator is off. I noticed that when I shut the the lid the power light turns white and if I open the lid I get a good 3 seconds of the screen to work.
Anybody have an idea to what's happening?

Okay, here are the complete specs for your Mac:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-20-inch-sp ecs.html
It came originally with 2 x 512 MB RAM (total of 1 GB). Your hard drive is 250 GB (you said 1 GB). So how much RAM ( how much and which brand) did you add? Memory can still be a problem - it can become defective. So, that would be my first guess; another is your hard drive failing. There are few troubleshooting methods or tests if it will not even boot.
If you're able, try some of these:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1587
And the Apple hardware test (run the extended test and you'll need your install disk):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
If you can't perform any of the above, make sure you write down everything that has happened exactly so you can tell them (including unplugging it several times which can cause problems all by itself) before making an appointment at your nearest Genius bar.

  • Tecra A10-S3501 Power Light Flashes, Fan Runs Full Speed.

    Greets all,
I have a customers Tecra in the shop, and after getting a good description of what was happening at the tme of failure, I still cannot seem to figure it out. She was watching a flash video when it froze. Upon reboot, it will not init the LCD, it does seem to at least partially POST, cd drive spins up, and all LCDs blink like normal. Still no LCD init, and the power light blinks green, no pattern, it is not a binary post led code. Fan spins up directly to full speed and stays there for the duration. I counted 20 one second blinks with fan at full speed, before powering down. Any ideas? Customer has no warranty, so would be nice to fix it for her. :-) Thank you, and have a great day.

    Hey,
Can you see a picture on external monitor? If yes it might be only a FL inverter issue of internal display. This is not an expensive part so this would be easy to fix the problem.
Anyway, if you cant see a picture on external monitor, I think its related to another part, maybe mainboard or something else. This should be checked from an authorized service provider
By the way: If you have connected an external monitor, use FN+F5 key combination to switch between them

  • Imac blank screen. back light on. imac shows on TV. bad LCD?

hello, I have imac 21.5 late 09 modle A1311. this piece of garbage was working til one day started up with blank screen. we did nothing to it no changing of any parts.nothing connected to this imac. I called apple and as always they were no help at all. I took it to iphone911 they said it could be LCD or LCD connector. I don't think they know what they are doing much like Apple. I hooked up the imac to the TV with HDMI and everything showed up and was able to use it with the TV full accsess. this imac powers up and the back light (dark blue) comes on ummm not the blue u see when mac starts bthis is backlight!! after started but no video at all. could the LCD be bad even tho backlight comes on? what could it be if it's not the LCD? I'm going to buy LCD if it's but I wan't to make sure this is the fix. I put it on CL but very low offers so I want to sell it and get windows and NEVER EVER again buy anything apple makes total garbage I'm so mad spending $1500+ with no support, now thinking I could bought 3 nice laptops with winds but live and learn.

oh thank god I sold this piece of crap called imac and bought new HP win 8. nothing ever will enter my house that apple makes this is for sure.and nothing good comes out of an idiot who makes a computer in the garage after fail in fixing cars!!

  • HP Photosmart 7510 touch screen, power light and wifi lights won't turn on

I bought my HP Photosmart 7510 over a year ago, just past warranty. I've printed less than 50 pages total at home and only 3 photos. Just as of two days ago, the touch screen decided not to work anymore, and the lights that usually come on next to the power button and wifi icon won't come on either. However, when I turn it on, the same tones sound out and the scanner and ink jets move around in their usual set-up. I've troubleshooted with trying several different ways of restarting it, but to no avail.
HP tech support phone line was a joke, I got told by the first representative (before telling him which product I had or even offering to troubleshoot) that he was going to send a repairman to my house for $149. Over the price of my printer. So I tried calling back and spoke with a young woman who, when I asked if she would help me troubleshoot my printer, said "you can't troubleshoot that, only software". Then insisted that I pay $130 for a new printer. When I asked to be transferred to her supervisor, I was yelled at, told to again buy a new HP printer, and pushed off the phone.
I have had several HP products, I always seek them out for the brand name and have trusted the merchandise. But one year of life in a product is just silly. And unforturnately, I won't be able to convince myself to buy another one for that kind of lifespan unless I can fix this. I know I'm not the first one with this issue, is there a RECALL I'm not aware of? How can I get this puppy working again?

    Hello cbroomhead,
I am sorry to hear about your Photosmart 7510's touch screen showing blank and not working. I understand you can still hear the printer warming up when you power it on. I would like to post you a troubleshooting guide below to try in hopes to correct the issue.
If you have tried all of the steps and the screen is still blank, you can also try another power cable if you have one.
    Blank Control Panel Display
If you are able to have the screen come back on, also check for a Firmware Update.
    I hope this helps!

    Hi
No LOGO coming on start up?
    Which OS, 32 or 64-bit?
Are you able to enter BIOS for testing hardware from System Diagnostics?
Pressing F8 at the startup could get into the Windows Safe Mode & do the repair.
I think you have tried almost all troubleshooting available, though you may verify them again, go through the documents below:
Computer Does not Start (Windows 7, Vista, XP)
Computer Does Not Start (Windows 8)
HP Notebook PCs - Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boo...
Try reseating the hard drive, if accessible, by disconnecting & reconnecting SATA cable gently and firmly after doing a hard reset, & check again.
If nothing worked, its a no-no situation may be board problem or hardware-related & you may want to Contact HP in your region.

  • IMac blank screen at start up, just fan whirl.

Well I've got myself a bit of a problem, my computer is usually left on all the time with the odd restart here and there, anyway it got turned off today while I was out of the house and now it's stopped working.
Simply put, after the startup chime there is nothing but a blank screen, no lights on the keyboard or monitor, none of the start up key combinations will do anything so I can't even open the disk tray to try a Tiger boot dvd.
After scanning these forums I learnt that the PMU may need resetting, so I did that, the actual pressing of the PMU didn't move it much so I hope I pressed hard enough, and turned it back on agin only to be met by that same blank screen.
So is my faithfull iMac G4 dead?

Try things in Apple doc.#106464 for your startup issue.
Also, try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. Smokes link will help walk you thru it.
Let us know if Disk Utility reports any problems and what they are.

  • X1 Carbon (3443CTO) start up blank screen and no activities after BIOS ACHI to Compatibility

    Hi everyone,
    I have a X1 Carbon 3443CTO and it's running fine.
Last night everything was ok and I went into the BIOS and changed AHCI to compatibility (don't ask me why, I was doing some testing), then I went "Exit and Save Changes" (at the last page of BIOS). As soon as I press Enter the screen freezed there (as opposed to reboot)
Since it hangs there I hold the power button and it shutdown.
Then I power it up again, but now, here is the problem:
    1) The computer turns ON, keyboard backlight flash on for a second (normal)
    2) Screen stays blank (no, it's not the backlight faulty)
    3) power light turns ON (normal)
    4) no sign of activities pressing any buttons, no beep sound
I am not sure what the problem is but it feels it's due to BIOS setting I did that caused the problem. Would someone please help me to resolve this (urgent)?
    Many thanks!!!
    John

It turns out that the board does need replacement, they are ordering the part and getting it replaced.

  • Purchased the Sony Tablet in June 2012, started to shut down during regular use (blank screen, swirl

I am a long time Sony customer… mostly TVs and other entertainment items.
Purchased the Sony Tablet in June 2012, started to shut down during regular use (blank screen, swirly lights comes on, and soft reset required) in September 2012.
December 2012, issue started to take place more frequent (to the point it was too annoying).
Sent the tablet in for repair before X-Mas and just got it back from the TX repair center yesterday (1/14/13).
    They replaced the motherboard.
1/15/13, 11:49AM, the same issue happened.
I am asked to mail it in again, so they can fix the issue.
I like Sony products, but this is something new for me.
I like to know if this is common for the tablet, please share story.
    My concerns are:
They replaced the motherboard (that is pretty much the core of the tablet!)
What do I do when my warranty expires in June 2013 and the issue is still there?

I and many others have the same issue. You can an find some links to reported issues in my thread.
Sony has yet to acknowledge the issue and define whether it is software or hardware based. This lack of communication is very disheartening.

  • MacBook pro won't power up! Acting asleep, black screen, fans don't fire up. Light nr catch pulsing, have taken batt out and reset but still blank screen, help!!

MacBook pro won't power up! Acting asleep, black screen, fans don't fire up. Light nr catch pulsing, have taken batt out and reset but still blank screen, help!!

You may want to try this.
    Solution A
Start up your MBP while pressing Option (alt)|, Command, P, R until your hear 3 chimes rather than 2 as indicated by apple. This worked for me the first time.
    Solution B
Start your MBP while pressing Option (alt), Command, S
Hold until you see the computer automatic routine. When it finally stops type the following followed by "return":
    fsck -fy
It will probably indicate some problem related to "pcscd.pub" (should be 16 instead of 17). I haven't figured out what this means but somewhere in the Internet i read it is related to scan cards...
More importantly this routine will fix any problems with your HDD similarily to disk repair. When it ends, it will tell you if it has fixed/modified anything. If it has, run the routine again by typing again "fsck -fy"
Lastly, reboot by typing "reboot" (followed by "return")
    Solution C
Start up your MBP while pressing option (alt), command, S
hold keys until you see computer commands scrolling
when the routine stops type the following, each line followed by the "return" key:
    mount -uw /
    chmod 775 /
    chmod 1775 /
    reboot
After which your computer should reboot on it's own.
Each of the above has worked for me at one time or another. Once your computer has rebooted from the DVD you can reinstall OS X. If your problems started after installing 10.5.6, then I don't suggest updating until 10.5.5.
I'm very very disappointed with my 2007 MBP, it started to give me problems after 1 year. had to change the HDD and lately when I isntalled 10.5.6 it suddenly refused to start up., My previous Mac laptop (2003 866Mhz) worked for 4 years without a hitch. Ironically I've had to use it to access the internet and find solutions for my current MBP.
    best of luck
