No startup chime all of a sudden - help please...

I started up our G4 hoping to do a safe boot in order to install new software.
I had just done a SuperDuper backup. All was well.
Touched on/power button on my Apple Studio Display (the way I always turn it on) - and waited for startup chime, no chime.
I made sure the sound is turned on. I played something in iTunes, there's speaker sound. I repaired permissions and verified state of HD just in case you'd ask but I don't think that has anything to do with it.
We replaced the PRAM battery about 4 months ago. It was new from Other World Computing (OWC) - a reputable Apple place.
I just read the post before mine and it seems a bit similar but I do have sound, just no startup chime.
What do you all suggest I do - I haven't done what was suggested in other post since it's probably not the same issue - I do have sound from my speakers just not at startup.
Help, please,
Mrs H

Reporting as instructed, Ma'am!
No luck yet. Actually I have just begun to deal with the problem, but I wanted to get this information in here - so that anyone else who reads this thread will know what ~Bee and I are talking about in this comment and see what ~Bee has suggested already.
In http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2097007&tstart=0
I made reference to my sudden no chime issue.
That prompted ~Bee to write there about the chime problem.
I have copied her suggestions from there and my response there to have all the discussion in one place. (and to prevent my being chastised for double posting)

Hello again . . .
So sorry to hear of your recent problems.
As to the Kernel Panic screen (grey screen with restart warning),
If there's anything attached to you Mac with a cable, unplug it.
Other than an Apple Keyboard and Mouse.
Then see how things go from there . . .
Which Mac is it, by the way???
*_And I replied_*:
Thanks for your concern ~Bee.
I asked a question about the start up problem in the G4 thread
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2097097&tstart=0
I just referred to it here.
It's not a "Kernel Panic screen (grey screen with restart warning)," problem - I think! The chime doesn't chime, but everything else works fine at startup. No warnings, no grey blank screens...
" If there's anything attached to you Mac with a cable, unplug it. Other than an Apple Keyboard and Mouse. " All that's attached with USB, (besides keyboard which is attached to display) and my mouse is a UPS power supply, and my LaCie HD which is my startup drive - don't ask - that's just the way my system was reconfigured for me by the Apple store when I wanted to move up to Tiger - OS 9 runs on my internal HD and OSX is on the LaCie.
I'll disconnect the UPS and try again tomorrow. I'm scared to try tonight.
If we are going to discuss this issue further, could we do it at the place where I asked about it - the link above, so I don't get people upset for posting the same thing in 2 places.
Thanks again for your concern.

iphone 5 touch screen has stoped working all of a sudden, help?

    Hello there, shankate1993.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps for troubleshooting issues with touchscreen response on your iOS device:
If the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond to touch - Apple Support
    Fix your touchscreen
Make sure your hands are clean and dry, then try these steps:
If you have a case or screen protector on your device, try removing it.
Clean the screen with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
    Unplug your device.
Restart your device. If you can't restart, reset your device.
If your touchscreen still doesn't respond like it should, contact Apple Support or take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

    Can anyone help please?
5.0.1 Firefox, application froze then crashed. Restarted it, but no 'restore session' and i've lost all my tabs. Help please?!?!
    Done config:restoresession, and nothing.

There shouldn't be any numbered sessionstore-##.js in the Firefox Profile Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
The presence of such files usually indicates that that was a problem with accessing the main sessionstore.js file that prevented Firefox from renaming the temp file with the number.<br />
In this case you may be lucky that the file with the highest number may have that session.<br />
You can try to rename the file sessionstore-3.js to sessionstore.js to see if that brings back the lost tabs.
If you use the Time Machine then you can try to restore a copy of sessionstore.js from around the time that you lost that session.

Thanks for responding....but isn't your potential solution designed for Windows users? I have a Mac.
If it does apply to Mac, I am also hoping for something simpler as this could take weeks to isolate the problem and it would be more efficient to use another browser for mail
Also, I should have added, this problem occurs only occasionally and seemingly only when I am taking some time to compose a message

  • Mac book pro slow performance all of a sudden.. please help.

Mac book is running slow all of sudden. Please help debug the issue.

Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Don't download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an  SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

  • ITunes Sounds Like Cr*p All Of A Sudden - HELP!

This afternoon I was enjoying the rockin' tracks on my iTunes as always. All of a sudden the sound dropped down in the middle of a song, not just volume, but bass, tone, presence (you know...sounds like all of a sudden you're listening through a paper towel roll). I checked my speaker connnections, rebooted my computer and iTunes and nothing changed - still sounded lousy. Kindly note, I have Harman Kardon Sound Sticks and Bass and the sound has always been top-flight!
I ventured onto the net and visited several sites w/ audio (BBC Radio, Wolfgang's Vault, YouTube, Apple Movie Trailers) and everything sounded just fine. Went back to iTunes - garbage!
Then I went into a bunch of iTunes radio stations and they all sounded fine as well. Also, the "Sound Effects" alert noises on my iMac are normal. Seems my iTunes playlist is the only thing affected. I checked and unchecked the "sound enhancer" box in preferences and nothing changed.
Can anybody offer help? I work out of my home office and will kill myself it I can't enjoy my music (yes, the work is that boring!).
    Thanks!

The uninstall, reinstall, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, reformat, is valid problem solving advice for a PC but is seldom the best first approach for a Mac. Note this message is in the Using iTunes for Mac section.

  • Missing Emails/SMS days all of a sudden-help!

Thank you for your attempted help!  About midday today I realized that all of a sudden I was missing multiple days of my email/sms messages in my inbox.  I have Dec. 20th but then am completely missing Dec. 19th, Dec. 18th and then I have Dec. 17th and then it completely skips to Sept. 9th.  I am not sure if pressed something that would accidentally hide these messages.  I know the emails are still present in my normal inbox in my regular mail, but they are not showing on my blackberry.  Also, I am missing tons of SMS.  I know that I could see all of it last night before bed, so this just happened today.  I can still send and receive messages and they are posting to Dec. 20th so I just want to get my days back!!  Please help if you can.  Thanks!

  • *** HOME button won't work all of a sudden - help!

I have a weird problem. My phone hasn't been dropped on the ground or in water but all of a sudden, the home button doesn't work anymore. Nothing feels broken on the phone (i.e. the button doesn't feel like it won't press down) but whenever I'm in an app and need to exist, pressing the home button does nothing! If I'm in my email and want to surf Safari, I have to reboot my phone - which is obviously very annoying.
I tried restoring my iPhone as both a new phone and from my latest backup but it still doesn't work - bummer. Is my phone broken or does anyone have any tips and tricks that could get it up and running again?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Possibly a hardware problem. Mine developed that issue, although at first a really hard press worked. Apple replaced my phone.

  • HP OfficeJet Pro K5400 no longer prints Cyan and Yellow all of a sudden. Please help..

Officejet Pro K5400 Cyan and Yellow just stopped working at the same time (very strange).  I've read almost every post and tried almost everything including the diagnostic tests that show that everything is fine (via printer buttons), cleaning test and every other test available in the HP manual many times.  The diagnostic test shows no problems and cartridges all brand new and full to max.  However the diagnostic print only shows the Black and Magenta, but no Cyan, Yellow or any other color.  I pulled out the print heads, cleaned connectors, soaked heads and everything else you can imagine and no luck. I must have pulled the power out and "hard reset" it over a dozen times.  I can't imagine that both print heads (cyan on one, yellow on the other) just decided to die at the same time.  I cant be driver/software related because I did the tests directly from the printer.  The only thing I can think of is maybe cyan and yellow dried out when I took out the cartridges to take to staples with me for reference.  All cartridges were out of the printer for 2 weeks or so.  Any thoughts?

  • 'Error loading plugin: Plugin file not found' message on ONLY 5 sites, but all others OK.  Help, please!

    Hi Again!
I posted this problem here before, but since I really need to access the sites that receive this error message in less than a month, I had to re-post; hopefully someone who didn't see it before will see it & have a solution for me.
Here are the details:  I'm running windows 8.1 & I use Firefox 33.1.1, Pale Moon 25.1.0 or Opera 26.0 as my browsers, (I have IE installed & up-to-date, but I never use it).  I followed the 10-point checklist on Adobe & everything was done, except for "uncheck Hardware Acceleration" in Flash 'Settings'; I tried to uncheck it on this site, where it's indicated, as well as in my 4 browsers when I'm doing something that uses Flash, but no matter how hard I try, I can't 'uncheck' the check mark in that tiny box!  Since this error problem only affects 5 web sites, & I can watch streaming media on all other sites, I don't think it's an issue.
Here's how this problem began:  I was watching a live, streaming nest-cam on 5/09/14 around 11:00AM, (yes, I DO know the exact time & date, because it happened so suddenly while I was watching this website that I'd been watching since the end of February, 2014), when my screen went black.  I thought it was probably an Adobe Crash, but when the usual Crash Report window didn't show up, I just closed Firefox & reopened it, expecting to resume watching the nest-cam.  When I went back to the site, I got the black screen with the "Error loading plugin: Plugin file not found" message.  The chat portion on the site still works, though. I know there are other sites with this nest-cam feed, so I started trying them, but it took several tries for me to find one that didn't get the error message! I posted this problem on "Windows BBS" forum, & someone else posted that the same thing happened to them AND on the same sites!  They didn't have a solution, either.  I cleared my cache, rebooted my PC & even did a System Restore, but whatever happened in that brief second made using ONLY 5 sites impossible.  Here are the sites that receive the error message:
http://pixcontroller.com/eagles, (but I CAN go to http://pixcontroller.com, but there isn't any streaming media)
    http://cbslocal.com/eagles
    http://westmorelandconservancy.org/BlueBirdwebcam-1.htm
http://wildearth.tv/cam/pittsburgh-bald-eagles, (I get the error message on ALL cams on this site)
http://aviary.org/BE-NestCam1 (I get the error message on ALL cams on this site)
Now if any videos from the 5 websites above are uploaded to YouTube, I can watch them perfectly...no error message if I watch the videos elsewhere.  Luckily, I found Ustream, & they have most of the nest cams I watch, but I need to fix this issue, because it's nearing nesting time!  I'm an amateur nest-watcher & it's vital that I have access to these 5 sites, so if anyone knows how to fix this, PLEASE tell me!
Thanks for taking the time to read my post.
    All suggestions/solutions are gratefully accepted.
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Help please!
    Live preview also not working.
I have exactly the exact problem described below but do not have a folder with the same name as the volume created under the volume. Please can someone help - I've tried everything. This problem only happened when I upgraded to Dreaweaver CC!
"On launching Dreamweaver on your Macintosh if your Welcome Screen is not loading and if you see a "File not found" error, please check if you have a folder with the same name as your volume created under the volume. For more info on this please go through the attached pdf document. Other dialogs/panels in dreamweaver that will be blank due to this issue are Jquery Swatches panel, Adobe Edge Webfonts tab in Manage Fonts dialog,W3c Error Info dialog, Externalise Javascript dialog and svn revert dialog. After following the changes mentioned in the attached document please check all the affected dialogs/panels to confirm everything is working as expected."

I got an email telling me I used all my storage. I bought more but am unable to access all my emails. Help please

I too have the same problem after I upgraded to Firefox 5 today. I have a Tiscali webmail account, it lets me sign in but a message is displayed that I have "undefined e-mails".
I closed down Firefox and opened Internet Explorer. This allowed me to sign in and access my e-mails without any problems.
Had to smile to myself as Firefox required my e-mail address to register and verify my new account so I could place a post or reply to other peoples posts etc. As previously mentioned I can only access these via Internet Explorer!

  • Scrolling, typing and clicker "stick" all of the sudden - help?

I bought my MBP exactly one month ago, and things have been fine for the most part. But suddenly the response rate for my clicker, two-finger touch pad scrolling and typing ave been abysmally slow. It takes the computer a few seconds to catch up with what I'm typing, scrolling down pages is no longer smooth and controlled but sticky and "jumpy", and in clicking/unclicking boxes, links (anything)there is a similar delay.
Last night as I was watching some web-based quicktime videos everything froze up, and I had to restart...the first few attempts at restarting were unsuccessful; the grey screen popped up with the apple logo and the timer icon went round and round, but OS never booted. Once I did manage to boot up, the same thing happened again while trying to watch these videos. I restarted again, and again, and again, until the computer would boot to desktop. After that I began having this issue. Any ideas about what this is/how to fix it? Thanks.

    viper0066 -
You must have DiskWarrior v 4.4 in order to run under Lion.  That does not mean you can't use an earlier version of DW if you are running a copy while booted in an earlier version of OSX provided that the version of DW is supported by that earlier version of OSX.  So, you could use DW 4.3 on a Lion startup drive provided that you are booted into Snow Leopard or older, if that makes sense.  Also, as of a few days ago Alsoft still didn't have a bootable CD/DVD for Lion, apparently they are waiting for a copy of the code from Apple to do this.  So you can't boot a computer requiring Lion from an existing DiskWarrior CD or DVD (yet).
I seem to remember a memory error similar to what you are getting when there is not enough room left on the drive for virtual memory while DW works.  The larger the drive you are working on the more virtual memory space you need.  Remember that DW operates in a fail safe mode, that is, it writes potential changes to unused space on the drive first so you can use the preview function before committing to the final writing of the repalcement directory.  How much free space unused room do you have left on these drives, and how big are they?  I'm not sure if the free space has to be contiguous, if so you might consider iDefrag or something similar.  However, as to any drive that already has problems, do not try iDefrag, that well might make the problem worse:(
I hope these comments help. - Randy

  • My computer is saying sound is enabled i am not getting any sound all of a sudden HELP!

The sound on my computer was fine last night.  I noticed today i wasn't hearing anything.  Can anyone help me?  I have a HP Pavilion dm4  Thank You

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp54001-54500/sp54123.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load.  Open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.
If you still have no audio, open windows Control Panel, open Administrative Tools and open Services.  Check that the following services are all showing as Status= Started and Start-up Type= Automatic
    Audio Service
    Multimedia Class Scheduler
    Windows Audio
    Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
If you need to make a change to any of the above, just right click the service and select Properties, then in the dropdown box next to 'Start-up type',  select Automatic and click Apply to save the change.  Then click the Start button.

  • Startup Drive Almost Full!!  Help Please

Hi everyone, I have a 1.25mhz, 1.25gig MDD (w/FW400)and today I got an alert message that said "Startup Drive almost full"....The computer has the stock 80gig harddrive, and I'm guessing that all of those RAW photos have just filled up the drive.
I was thinking of getting a 160 or 200 gig internal harddrive, and then using the 80 gig drive specifically for music and photos. My question is how do I move all of the info from my current hard drive onto the new drive. I also have a 300 gig external firewire harddrive that I can use to help with the transfer.
I'm pretty sure that I will be able to physically install the new drive.
    Thanks,
    Tom
    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Basically you need to clone your existing drive to the new drive. This is very easy to do with programs such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. I use CCC all the time and it works fine for me, but I have heard that SD makes it even easier. Once the old drive has been cloned to the new, you can select it as the startup disk and begin booting from it.
After you are comfortable that all is well, feel free to format the 80GB disk and use it for other things.
