No startup/login sound logout/shutdown sound cutoff

I am using Gnome and alsa/esd for sound events.  My problem is that the startup sounds do not play while the gnome splashscreen is opening (or ever) and the shutdown/logoff sound gets cut off (apparently as alsa/esd shuts down).  Is there a way to help them play.
This is obviously not a critical issue, but it does take away some of the polish of the arch experience.
All other sound events play (menus, commands, toggles, email, etc.)
I am up to date on all packages, but this has been a problem over the last six months (ie since I began using Arch).

coiote, what errors did you encounter while building the package?

thanks
Sorry if this is a silly comment but what I posted was a patch for the gnome-session PKGBUILD.  It isn't the complete PKGBUILD I used, which was:

    Now that you mentioned it, that might be the source of the problem. Something was definitely wrong with my graphics card before the incident happened. You mean that particular batch of graphics cards had some inherent issues, right? I went to the genius bar, and the 'genius' there, without trying to diagnose the problem properly, just adviced me to buy a new mbp! He said Apple will no longer try to fix or touch macs older than 5 yrs. Mine is 5.5 yrs old...

    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    I understand that your Thunderbolt display is just showing a black screen when you boot your computer. The following article should be of help in troubleshooting your display.

  • Autoclose apps, Autounmount drives on Logout/Shutdown?

    I'm running a vanilla XFCE. I'm having problems because xfce doesn't close all my programs when I shutdown or logout. It doesn't auto-unmout my removable drives.
    The first one conflicts with Thunderbird since I intalled they systemtray program firetray. I set thunderbird to start at startup, but since I have firetray, I just minimize thunderbird to the tray, not closing thunderbird. Every session, I get this annoying error of "Thunderbird - Warning another instance is already occuring" or something like that.
    The other problem is when I logout/shutdown without explicitly unmounting my removable drives, the folder that gvfs/thunar-volman creates for the drive stays. Everytime, I mount on desktop, it creates another folder since the previous one is inaccesible. eg. DATA, DATA-1, DATA-2 etc. etc. I have to sudo rmdir everytime.
    I tried reading the wiki, and searching the web, but nothing seems close to reaching my problem. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

    Sounds like a long-standing xfce4-session bug. It used to not close the programs if “save session” was not checked. Looks like it’s still happening… I just got into the habit of manually closing all my programs before shutdown.

  • How to disable GNOME logout/shutdown/restart beep???

    Hello, when I logout/shutdown/restart and the volume is not mute, I hear a large beep sound which annoys me very much. I tried to untick alart sound in System->Preference->Sound, but it does not help.

    That module only affects the system PC speaker. You say "when the volume is not mute[d]"; is the beep coming from the soundcard or the PC speaker? If it's coming from the latter, unload the pcspkr module (and be sure to unload snd_pcsp as well if you're on a 2.6.28 or higher kernel).

  • KDE logout/shutdown dialog does not appear

    Hello, I am using KDE and the right click or the KMenu dialog for logout/shutdown/restart does not appear.
    Also i have a startup script which doesn't load at all times. I have found sometimes the dialog appears for some sessions (randomly), and in those sessions the autostart apps actually work. So I guess they are somewhat related.
    Please suggest me what steps should I take.

    The fact that it sometimes works doesn't make it easier to find  a solution.
    However, I did search a bit, and found his -perhaps outdated-site

    chain.doFilter(request, response);
    } else {
    goPage(wrappedRequest, wrappedResponse, "/faces/enduser/index.xhtml");
    And here is my bean with login and log out method:

    public String Logout() {

  • I NEED TO GET LOGIN AND LOGOUT TIMING DETAILS FROM CLIENT SYSTEMS

    HI,
    CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME ON HOW TO GET LOGIN AND LOGOUT , CLIENT EVENT DETAILS FROM CLIENT SYSTEMS ON SERVER 2008 R2.
    THANKS,
    KUMAR.

    You may need to enable active directory Logon/Logoff Audit event.
    The Audit logon events policy records all attempts to log on to the local computer, whether by using a domain account or a local account.
    On Domain Controller, this policy records attempts to access the DC only.
    By using these events we can track user's logon duration by mapping logon and logoff events with user's Logon ID which is unique between user's logon and logoff.
    Please refer to this blog to understand the complete process to audit the successful or failed logon and logoff attempts in the network using the audit policies :

  • Calculating Login and Logout Times - need help

    Hi everyone. I have the first part of this code and can't seem to figure out the time calculation part. What it is - create a code that asks for a user name or social security number, then the person enters up to 6 login and logout times for the day. They also have the option to enter personal time or sick time (neither of which can be over 8 hours). I have all of that complete, but I can't figure out how to get the in and out times and the leave times to calculate. I have 3 pieces of code - here they are:
    Hours:
    import java.util.*;
    public class Hours
         //define states of Hours
         int regularhoursInt = 0;
         int regularminutesInt = 0;
         int overtimehoursInt = 0;
         int overtimeminutesInt = 0;
         //set hours worked
         public void setHours(int timein, int timeout)
              int temphoursin = timein/100;
              int tempminutesin = timein - timein/100;
              int temphoursout = timeout/100;
              int tempminutesout = timeout - timeout/100;
              GregorianCalendar time1 = new GregorianCalendar(2003, 8, 1, temphoursin, tempminutesin, 0);
              GregorianCalendar time2 = new GregorianCalendar(2003, 8, 1, temphoursout, tempminutesout, 0);
              //store to date
              Date d1 = time1.getTime();
              Date d2 = time2.getTime();
              //store time to long
              long t1 = d1.getTime();
              long t2 = d2.getTime();
              //subtract and convert to seconds
              long time = (t2 - t1)/1000;
              long tempregularLong = 0;
              long tempovertimeLong = 0;
              //see if regular hours are over 8 hours (28800 seconds)

              if (tempregularLong > 28800)
                   tempovertimeLong = tempregularLong - 28800;
                   tempregularLong = tempregularLong - tempovertimeLong;
              //convert to hours and minutes

    I know it is a lot of code, but I am just starting and couldn't think of an easier way to do this.
    Thank you for any help - it is greatly appreciated. You can email me with any code help - [email protected].

    My 2 cents, I dunno what it'll be worth.
    I think you should never convert anything until the final moment that you are at actually getting the int or float number of hours.
    Why are you doing all this Gregorian and conversion gymnastics throughout your calculations?
    To get the current time in milliseconds, use either
    java.util.Date d = new java.util.Date();
    or
    long d = System.currentTimeMillis();
    Use this long number for all your calculations, and only at the end convert it. To convert, you can use java.text.SimpleDateFormat, which I find very straightforward to use. I honestly think you should never convert your dates before doing any calculations, only after doing them, otherwise you'll loose precision and make errors for sure.
