No storage space left what is other?

My iPhone4 has run out of storage space but is showing nearly 6 gig marked not as music or videos etc but marked as other what is other and how do you get rid of it

Other is anything that does not fit in the rest of the catergories.
Typically if it is over 1GB that indicates corruption.
Restore the device from backup, "Other" should reduce in size significantly.  If it does not, restore as new.

To download/install an app directly to the iPod you need available storage equal to about three times the file download size. Syncing the app to the iPod requires a lot less. Thus you either have to free up more storage or sync the app from your computer.

Are you sure the message isn't about space on your phone, rather than in iCloud.

  • My new macbook air has lots of storage space used up by "other"

Ive only got a 64gb hard drive in my macbook air and i want to make the most of it but when i go into the system utilities to see how where my storage space is being used i find that 28gb is used up under the "other" section, i can understand that documents may be included in this but its brand new and ive not got any files as such other than my music and photos which have there own disk space covered so what is in this other, the OS i assume but 28gb?? it cant be that big.
im worried ive transfered some massive file from my PC somewhere and cant find it, is there a way of looking more in detail where my storage is going?
what is covered under the other section of hard disk usage?
I'd appreciate if any of you mac genius could help as I'm new to all this
    Many thanks

I read the article you posted but I wasn't able to find anything that I was able to delete based on the advice from that website. I took my Macbook to the Apple store and they were convinced that my computer's mail account was taking up all the memory. We unlinked my account and it cleared up about 10 gigs. Unfortunately, "other" space is back up to 28 gigs (over half of my memory). Please help! The Apple store has no other solutions and I am continually running out of startup space. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

  • Low storage space left on iPhone 4S

After the release of ios7 I wanted to load it so my phone would be up to date. Well even if I tried it won't work because evidently I don't have enough memory left. I have 2.3 GB left. The main source of my memory are my pictures and Pandora. I have deleted unnecessary and unused apps, cleared my browser history, deleted old alarms, reminders, and drafts in my inbox. I have even gone through reluctantly and deleted stations I don't listen to on Pandora anymore as well as older pictures and videos.  I do not use my iTunes account on my phone. My biggest confusion I suppose comes from the fact that my mom has the same size capacity for memory on her phone (also an iPhone 4S), and had twice the amount of pictures (I have 632 where she has 1277), and also has pandora and she has closer to 9.5 GB memory remaining. She also has more games and apps that she uses more frequently than I do. Now Im due for an upgrade in the coming months but until that rolls around I don't want to have to pick and choose what pictures to capture or what memories to erase (my phone is essentially my camera as I no longer have a digital one).
So I guess my question is are there any other tips and options to gain more memory space?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello Em126
If you go to Settings > General > Usage, it will provide you with a list of what apps are using the most data on your iPhone. Then you will have a sense of where you can remove data if you need to.

  • How do I reclaim iPhone storage space taken up by 'Other'?

When I connect my iPhone to iTunes, the bar at the bottom of the screen that gives information on the storage amounts for the various functions (audio, photos, apps, books, other, free) is showing 2.2 GB for "other".  What is stored in other?  How can I reduce the size of that area?

That was helpful.  I was able to get an understanding on what "other" consists of; however not being able to see what's inside it is a little frustrating.  I heard that an app called Diskaid is helpful in managing files on iphone.  I installed it on my MacPro and also installed FileApp on my iPhone but I don't know how to use it.  Other people have said that they spotted video files using DiskAid that are not visible on in iTunes or on their iPhone, and were able to delete it, greatly reducing the size of "other".   Any info about this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Storage Space eaten up by 'Other'/Yellow Bar - Solution

Download this program - http://www.derlien.com It will show you where all your space has gone.
If your computer's anything like mine, it'll be the Mail program and it's tendency to NEVER DELETE ANYTHING NO MATTER WHAT YOU TELL IT TO DO.
You have to go to ~/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes and delete manually.
What a nightmare. I saved 100Gb by doing this...

I'm not the only one without a 'flawless' Mac - there's plenty of others posting questions about this. I did a clean install and everything which didn't help. Only manually erasing the library files did.

  • How to clear "other" storage space

How do you clear storage space taken up by "other"?

To do that you will need to restore your phone:
If You Are Locked Out, Have Forgotten Your Passcode, or Just Need to Restore Your Device
    1. iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
    2. iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
    3. iOS- Understanding passcodes
    4. What to Do If You've Forgotten Your iPhone's Passcode
    5. How to Recover Forgotten iPhone Restrictions Passcode | The iPhone and iPad
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the
Back Up option. If you have just backed up the device, it is not necessary
              to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup. If you do not have a
backup to restore or have forgotten your restrictions passcode, then restore as New.
If you are restoring to fix a forgotten Restrictions Code or as a New device, then skip Step 9 and restore as New.

If you try to access Spotlight in the morning and it is still indexing, reindex it by following these steps.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2409
Sometimes the index is corrupted, or something it is trying to index is, and it hangs up like that.
Re-indexing may free that up and let it work correctly.

  • Storage space iOS 8

I have literally no storage space left after installing iOS 8. I can't reinstall any of my previous apps because iOS 8 took up all of my storage space. I heard that this is temporary, and if so, when will my storage space be freed up again? Please no comments about how I should delete photos and apps that are taking up too much space, because i have NOTHING on my phone. Help?
    <Edited by Host>

I'm having a similar problem with my two iPads - a 128 GB iPad4 and a 128 GB iPad Mini3, both running iOS8.1.  I first noticed the problem yesterday, and spent some time trying to diagnose what was going on this morning.  Whatever storage space I opened up by either deleting Apps or videos, the open storage space would slowly get mysteriously gobbled up between times when I would return to the Usage/Manage Usage screen, and within 30 minutes would count down to 0 bytes available.  I opened up over 10GB in a couple of steps, and in both cases, the storage would slowly count down to 0.  I even took a snapshot of the detailed usage of all my top Apps (everything using > ~300MB), and none of these top usage apps were increasing in used storage size.  I also tried shutting down every app, re-booted a couple of time, and went back to the Usage screen to see what was going on.  In one case, the open storage space appeared to get larger, but when I backed out of the detailed usage-by-app screen, the available storage space had quickly dropped back to zero.
Any assistance or suggestions of something to try would be welcome.

  • Storage space virus?

My storage space on my iPhone 5 keeps showing no storage space left, even after I delete stuff the space fills up alone and Im back with not having space left. Could this be a virus? What should I do?

Before blindly jumping in and and trying a "shotgun" approach, first do some basic diagnosis. You may not have to restore your phone and wipe out all your data. Connect the phone to iTunes, click on its icon, and see how storage is allocated (on the bottom of the Status screen). The key entries are Other and Photos. If Photos is larger than you think it should be, see: Why does my iOS device say I have more photos than I can find?
You can also check this on the phone by going to Settings/General/About and checking the allocation to photos. If it is not right the same link above will fix it.
If Photos matches what your phone actually has, check Other. Normally it should be 1-2 GB. If it is MUCH larger than that you have data corruption. Start by restoring iOS on your phone and set it up as New. Then Restore your most recent backup. If Other again is very large after restoring the backup then the corruption is enshrined in the backup and you will have to restore again, and set it up as New, without restoring your backup.

  • My iPad keeps showing a message that I have run out of storage space.  I purchased more iCloud space in settings, but this message is still showing.  It also won't sync when I plug in to my computer...??

My iPad keeps showing a message that I have run out of storage space.  I have purchased more iCloud space in settings, but I am still getting this message.  I also am not able to sync my iPad in iTunes when plugging in to my computer.

The storage space is the iPad storage space, not iCloud storage space. What size Ipad do you have?
How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • What's "Other" and how do I get rid of it?

On my "Summary" page, at the bottom of the screen, it shows the capacity of my iPod nano.
It has 1.47GB of Audio and 1.31GB of "Other". I've only ever loaded music onto my iPod. Can anyone tell me what "Other" is, and how I can free up that space?
    Thanks
    Karen

The storage space taken up by "Other" can be made up of, notes or files of any kind you've added to the iPod whilst using it as a hard disk or album artwork.
There will always be a few MBs of used space under "other" but if it's in GBs it's unusually large.
If the iPod is enabled for disk use, you can look at the folders on the iPod through Explorer or Finder and delete anything you don't want.
Otherwise, see how to restore the iPod to factory settings which will erase the iPods contents and reclaim the used space.
Then reload the music from iTunes.
