No support for 24p camcorders? (de-interlacing, 3:2 pull-down)

I have the Canon HV20, which is not a new camcorder by any measure. It captures video in 24p (which is great for low-lighting conditions), but then writes it to tape in 60i. This is similar to how DVDs send cinematic video to your television.
Alas, I can't get iMovie to handling this video (and probably any interlaced video). I've tried exporting it to Quicktime (full 1080 resolution) at 24fps, and the output looks like crap due to incorrect de-interlacing or 3:2 recognition. Even if I open the original raw capture using quicktime and step through the "frames", quicktime shows 2 out of every 5 "frames" interlaced, since it incorrectly identifies the video as 29.97 fps.
Is there any way to use iMovie with interlaced video? With 24p recorded as 60i? Will Final Cut Express do any better? Thanks in advance.
Another possibility, can I export the video as 60i and let my TV or PS3 perform the 3:2 pull-down?

Are you familiar with 60i video? If the source video isn't de-interlaced, it's going to look bad even when exported uncompressed, assuming your exporting to some progressive scan format such as 30p or 24p.
2 out of every 5 frames (at 30fps) look like the ball on this webpage:
http://www.labdv.com/leon-lab/video/interlace_en.htm
There is a form of deinterlacing available when exporting to QuickTime. This solves the problem if I wanted a QuickTime container, but the option isn't available when exporting to MPEG-4.

  • Support for HDD camcorders?

Does anybody know if Quicktime Broadcaster will have support for HDD based camcorders? If not, know any programs that will or currently support HDD camcorders? Thanks!
    GC

Every time I connect my JVC GZ-HD7 HighDef HDD camcorder via Firewire to my computer, my Macbook says "JVC GZ-HD7" under plugged in firewire devices, and Quicktime broadcaster sees it as well, but whenever I select it as a video source on Quicktime broadcaster, I dont get any video to broadcast. All I get is a black screen.

  • Support for 24P?

Does iMovie 08 support 24P? (23.97 fps.) I have a Canon HV20 and would like to be able to edit my HD video in 24P format.

Although the HV20 does have a 24p mode, when you use this mode the camcorder does a 3:2 pulldown to make the video 60i before writing to tape. When you capture from the HV20, you're capturing 60i regardless of what mode the HV20 was in when you shot the video. You don't need any video editing software capable of handling 24p to edit video shot with 24p in the HV20.
However, there are many extra steps you can take once you capture the 24p footage (now 60i) to convert it to 24p using reverse telecine. I've done this for one project using Final Cut Studio. After all the fussing around, the final product wasn't any better than the original 60i footage captured from the camcorder (in my opinion). So why bother.
The real benefit of shooting with the HV20 in 24p mode is the better low light performance. The 24p does give you a different "look" and that look is retained in the 60i footage.
There are very few televisions available that can even display 24p video directly. Even if you could get native 24p to your TV, it probably converts it to 60i internally anyway before displaying it.
Unless you're shooting video that will get transferred to film, 60i is plenty good.

  • 10.5.3 AFP support for Time machine?

    Hi,
Seems that AFP support for Time machine isn't yet available in 10.5.3... At least I wasn't able to get it working with my iMac and QNAP TS-209. Has someone been able to get it working after updating to 10.5.3?
According to news ("Time Machine backupd and new AFP backups")about beta seeds of the 10.5.3 there has been implemented AFP support for the Time machine. Does Apple pulled it off again before final release? I would like to use time machine with my NAS, but seems I have to keep using 3rd party apps for that...
I start to be very disappointed about Apple, because they haven't manage to get it working/enabled yet. It feels that Apple just doesn't want to enable it, because they would like to sell Time capsule for all.... I hope this isn't the case.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Never believe any news from beta seeds. They are unreliable, and should be taken with a huge grain of salt. As for whether or not a feature was pulled who knows, except people under non-disclosure. Those who test betas are under requirement to stay mum. We can't guess Apple's policy. Please read terms of use on the right But unless you find it in the feature listing for the update, I would surmise it isn't there, unless someone has managed a hack around. You can always post feedback here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    Based on:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1141
    The only AFP improvement is:
Improves Spotlight searches on a AFP file server volumes.
And while several Time Machine improvements exist, none mention AFP.

  • HELP - PULL-DOWN ISSUE WORKING WITH ARCHIVAL FILM IN 24P

Bear with me here... I'm working on a historical doc for a local PBS station. Camera footage was originated using the HDX 200 in 720p-24n. Much of the program uses old 16mm film that's been xfer'd to an uncompressed video file using the 16mm "Sniper" (a psuedo-telecine transfer system. The system scans the film frames into a pc one at a time and stores the images as a single movie file using a proprietary codec). You can tell the Sniper's software what frame rate the original film footage was shot at - i.e. 18fps, 24fps and so-on. However, when you export it back out it only outputs to a 29.97 interlaced file.
Here's the problem: The film I'm working with was originated at 18fps - not 24. But, I'm working with a 24p sequence. I need to convert the footage so that it plays cleanly in a 24p environment. But I can't run it through CT and do a reverse telecine to remove the pull-down because that's designed for footage that was originated at 24fps only. When I try to do it on footage that was shot at 18fps, I end up with a wierd flashing/banding thing as it tries to apply a 24 frame pull-down to an 18 frame image.
I'm thinking that there has to be a plug-in either for FCP, CT or for the Sniper that can work a pull-down from 18fps film to 24p video.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Tim Walton
    KVIE Public Television

Yeah, I thoought of that. But I kinda wanted to keep the program in native 24p if I could.
If I did it that way, wouldn't I have to go ahead and edit the program in 24p, then export it out at 29.97, then re-import it into a 29.97 Sequence and finally add the archive material?

  • When do we get native support for MKV?

I love Quicktime, and I mean it when I say that I am currently stuck with VLC. When can we expect MKV support for QT?
VLC is a nice player, but it just lacks the simplicity and style of QT. Too many bells and whistles, I just want to run a movie file and thats it. And I have always been a big fan of QT. Before Prerian was the answer, but they have packed their bags and gone, so that optioin won't help me either.
I wish Apple would be faster with implementing native support to new file-types as the emerge.

When can we expect MKV support for QT?
I suspect never from Apple or as soon as you install Perian support for the file container and the QT 7 player together with whatever codec component support that may be required for whatever particular forms of compressed data you may be using. You can, of course, request file type support be added as an enhancement in the product feedback form but likely it won't happen because then you would probably want support for all possible compression format combinations the file could possibly ever support which is the same problem AVI file containers have and Apple is, of course, trying to modernize QT in line with compression formats the support mobile (iPod, iPhone, iPasd, and TV) devices.
Before Prerian was the answer, but they have packed their bags and gone, so that optioin won't help me either.
Still works for me under Mountain Lion (although there is no telling how long this will last). The main problem is then maintaining support for file content itself. E.g., my latest problem was learning that some of my MKV files contain WVC1 (Microsoft VC1) video and coherent DTS audio which, even after I found could be handled by the Flip4Mac codecs drop too many frames for proper playback (typical data rates are 150% that of AVCHD content and are interlaced rather than progressive), display an Windows icon when not played in a BD player, and at 29.97 fps are not always correctly supported by even the latest 3D DB compatible commercial players. (I.e., I suspect these are the types of issues Apple is trying to avoid.)
I wish Apple would be faster with implementing native support to new file-types as the emerge.
Hardly a new file container since the project is already a decade old. (I.e., MKV was supposed to be a modern, completely open source, universal file container that would likely be the successor to the containers like AVI.)

  • Any support for m2ts files?

It seems this is a common problem with AVCHD, but will there be no support for importing m2ts files?  It sounds like we can import mts files from the camera, but not m2ts files (i.e. those mts files which have been downloaded from the camera to the computer already).  It always seems very silly to me, because who keeps all their video on their camera indefinitely?  Most of my video is m2ts on my computer already, so what I really want is compatibility with these files.  Is this a pipedream?

    Julie Kmoch wrote:
Thanks for the feedback. I'll take it up with the video team as to whether we can open up to this file extension. In general, our focus is on video from DSLRs rather than camcorders, since that's where the vast majority of our customers are. But the line gets blurry with AVCHD which has a foot in both worlds.
This is an endlessly tiresome and increasingly common phoned-in reaction from Adobe (in an "answered" thread).  For Adobe's developers to spend the two seconds it takes to include another file extension for recognition of the exact same file format is zero innovation and merely being responsive to a major customer concern.  It has nothing to do with the back-pocket excuse of steering Lightroom to "focus" on photography and less on video, and also nothing to do with the performance/speed/"zippiness" of the application.  Adobe is highlighting its launch of Lightroom 4 with an advertising manifesto that it improves video support (while asking for large upgrade payments).  Mixed messages combined with "we're not focusing on video" is insulting to Adobe's loyal customers.
Support it, or not.  But if you market the product as supporting but refuse to follow through with zero-innovative fixes, then you are committing commercial fraud.

  • Premiere Elements 8 & native support for Samsung AVCHD MP4 video?

I'm excited about the release of version 8 of PSE and PE, but my big unanswered question is stated in the subject line: will Premiere Elements 8 natively support the MP4 files produced by my Samsung HMX-H104 ?
I've been entirely unsuccessful with this file format and PE7.
I've read throught the product descriptions and FAQ and Adobe makes reference to cameras from flash-drive camcorders, but doesn't offer any specifics. Native support looks like a crapshoot. Anybody with some insight to contribute?

Thanks for pointing that out -- yeah, I see my error. I just did a little bit of web searching and it's not AVCHD. This seems to pretty well summarize it:
    http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Samsung-SC-HMX10-Camcorder-Review-34476/Format.htm
"The Samsung ... outputs video in the H.264/MPEG-4 format (the file extension is .MP4). This highly-compressed video codec should not be confused with the competing AVCHD format. AVCHD is a type of H.264/MPEG-4 codec, but the version Samsung employs is different, with both benefits and drawbacks.
"...the MPEG-4 video ... is adequate. ... this type of MPEG-4 is space efficient and less processor-intensive to edit than AVCHD."
    ...and...
    http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Samsung-HMX-H105-First-Impressions-Camcorder-Review-3 6130/Compression-amp-Media.htm
"The Samsung HMX-H105 records video in the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format, the same as models from the previous years. MPEG-4 has clearly been adopted as the format of choice for HD camcorders, split into two camps. Sony, Canon, Panasonic, and most recently JVC, all use AVCHD, which is a subset of AVC/H.264. AVCHD experienced some serious stumbling blocks in its first few years, as existing hardware and software choked on the heavy data loads. It has, however, gotten much better in the past year. AVC/H.264 is also data-heavy, at least compared to old standard definition camcorders, but the format is easier to read. QuickTime can work perfectly with the files, and has the benefit of being free and dual-platform."
I know this aspect has all been covered to death on these forums in the past, with respect to PE7 (which chokes on any Samsung .MP4 file I throw at it). While I've bookmarked the workaround posted by you in this thread (thanks!), I was hoping to avoid the extra steps à la native compatability with PE8.

  • Window 7 has native support for AVCHD after the update today

"21. Improved playback support for video content from digital camcorders and cameras
Customers loved the increased range of formats natively supported by the Windows 7 Beta, but noticed areas where they wanted broader support. For example, one was unable to seek to a specific spot in the video in Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center for AVCHD content that was imported from a digital camcorder. Weve addressed this. Also, while the support for video from some digital cameras worked great, we also got feedback about supporting a broader set of devices out of the box. Weve since added support for Windows Media Player to natively support the .MOV files used to capture video for many common digital cameras. "
    http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/2009/02/26/some-changes-since-beta.aspx

Windows media player 11 can play AVCHD very well on windows vista already. And the .MOV native support actually worries me. If that happens, would apple still be making quicktime for windows? will quicktime pro still be on windows? because as far as i know there was no more windows media player on the mac as soon as flip4mac(well, it was made by microsoft..) came out.

  • New HDVxDV version supports HD100 24P!

JVC HD100 owners rejoice! 24P workflow is simplified at last.
Here is a link to versiontracker's description:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/25536
From Versiontracker -- What's new in this version:
HDVxDV 1.024 adds support for the JVC ProHD 24 frame per second HDV format. It allows you to capture and convert video from the new JVC GY-HD100U camera and edit in Final Cut Pro, Avid or any other editing system that supports Quicktime. HDVxDV features real time audio and video preview of native HDV video and selectable 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 color upsampling. You can export either drop-frame or non-drop frame timecode to export to Quicktime in the HDVxDV preferences. In addition, the timecode is now displayed in the timeline. When a new Quicktime movie is created, the original camera's timecode will be preserve

HDVxDV does not extract timecode...nor does LumiereHD. Which is why they are not the best solutions.

  • Lack of support for Canon G7 and G9. Alternatives?

I am really disappointed about the lack of support for the Canon G9, and looking at the list of compatible cameras (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835) I notice that Canon G7 - even if it does not have a RAW format, is not supported either.
I am thinking that the purchase of the G9 may have been premature and that I may need to sell it and get another cam that is supported by Apple/Aperture.
What would you guys do? Is there a cam out there similar to the G9 at the moment that has a Apple-supported RAW format?
    Best regards,
    Kjell Are Refsvik

I think the camera closest to the G9 that has RAW support from Apple are the Panasonic DMC-LX2/Leica D-Lux 3 twins. Don't know where you are, but in the US, the Panasonic costs about $400. 10MP, 28-112mm (35mm equivalent) Leica lens, very compact body, and RAW output. The Leica costs $599, and has that classic look.
I don't know much about that cameras, but you may want to investigate.

  • Why no SyncML-support for Harmattan??

I've used SyncML on my N95 with memotoo.com for years. Worked very well. I took it for granted that SyncML would be supported on the N9. But alas, it isn't. I find that really incomprehensible. Worse yet, CalDAV syncing with memotoo doesn't work - I don't know who's to blame for this, but on the desktop it works flawelessly so I do have a suspicion. Even worse: there is no way to sync contacts using CardDAV.
MeeGo (the true MeeGo) has SyncML-support out-of-the-box. And the N9/N950 does have SyncML-support for bluetooth.
Yes, contacts syncing is supported for Ovi. And Google. And Facebook. But I do NOT want to use those services, because of grave privacy risks and because they use yet again some proprietary protocols.
I wonder, what where they thinking at Nokia for NOT supporting some well-known open standards??
(While I'm ranting: why is there ^%@$ Facebook and GTalk-support over XMPP, but no self-defined XMPP account?? Yes, you can add such accounts from the terminal, using mc-tool, but really that's just a kick in the teeth. And where's UPnP/DLNA-support?)

Hey Guys, Did you figure out any way to do PIM sync via SyncML on N9?
I am struggling to get things moving as I come from N8.
N9 just doesnt have any way to sync calendar, tasks with Ovi. Same with Notes.

  • ISE 1.2.1 support for Yosemite?

Hello all, just curious. I see in the release notes for ISE 1.2.X that support for Mac OS 10.10 (Yosemite) was available via patch 12 on the ISE1.2.0 train of code. That said, I see nothing in the release notes stating any support for Yosemite for any of the patches for ISE1.2.1, the latest being patch 3 released 1 week after ISE 1.2.0 patch 12. Can anyone please advise if Yosemite is in fact supported on 1.2.1 with patch 3??
Thank you very much in advance for your help
    Jeff

    Jeff,
    OS X 10.10 is supported in ISE 1.2 p11, 1.2.1 p2 and 1.3.
Patch 12 for 1.2 and Patch 3 for 1.2.1 fix other issues for OS X 10.10, and I recommend updating to the latest patches for these fixes.
Here is the entry in the Release Notes detailing the fix for 10.10 in 1.2 p 12:
MacOsXAgent versrion 4.9.5.3 should be used and MacOsXSPWizard 1.0.0.30
Note that the description for these files denote ISE 1.2 Patch 11/12, ISE 1.3 release and above.  ISE 1.2.1 is not mentioned, but follows the bug fix/release schedule for 1.2, with an adjustment.
    1.2 patch 10 = 1.2.1 patch 1
