No support for DVD+R on my MBP

My MBP is unnable to burn DVD+R discs. In the System Profiler, it only lists DVD-R and DVD-RW as writable formats.
But when I look on the Apple.com MBP specpage (http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html), it says it should be able to burn DVD+R.
What's up with that?

Restart your computer with the Option, Command, P,
and R keys held down, and release the keys when you
hear the second startup chime. Doing this sometimes
fixes a problem in which the System Profiler forgets
that your drive is capable of writing to DVD+R and
DVD+RW disks.
I had the same trouble, this seemed to change the information in Profiler but do nothing to help the functional problem. However, the problem seemed to start with Disk Utility, which sees the DVD+R as locked, no matter what, and seems to just give up on it. It won't mount, or format, or anything. However, I found I was able to burn to the disc (Sony) in iPhoto, and then also in the Finder, so long as I didn't open DU, which seemed to make the disc invisible to the Finder. It's not quite all right, but it's at least a workaround.

  • DVD-RAM support for iMac (late 2006)

    Hello,
    according to the thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4755862
    I have a iMac C2D 2,16GHZ and a Pioneer DVR-K06 DVD Drive
According the pioneer specifications this drive supports DVD-RAM read and write.
But it isn't possible. Why? DVD-RAM is ideal to backup data. It can be rewritten over 100,000 times (DVD±RW approx. 1,000 times)
It is possible that Apple supply a firmware update that allows to read and burn DVD-RAM?

Thank you and SG for your responses.
Several of my TV's DVD Recorder features are not available with the use of a regular DVD disc and require a DVD RAM disc (chapters, etc.) So I decided to do some experimenting and cross checking of the DVD Recorder and my computer DVD-RAM supported DVD burner/Premiere Elements with regard to disc types for DVD-VIDEO. That is what got us to my question.
Several months ago, I got involved in someone else's issue where he could not rip content from a DVD disc which had its origins in a camcorder that recorded to either a DVD-R or DVD-RAM disc. I suspect that my mini test ran into similar issues, that is, DVD-R with the recording format of DVD-VIDEO and DVD-RAM with the recording format of VR. (I added this explanation to clean up my previous misspoken comment about DVD-VIDEO format having a different folder/file structure depending on whether a DVD-R or DVD RAM was involved.)

  • Dropped support for high-def dvd?

Does anyone know if Mavericks dropped support for the HD DVD format offered by Compressor 3?
A DVD authored with this format will not play on an iMac (2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo) running Mavericks, but will play on a Mac Pro (2x2Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon) running Mac OS 10.6.8. Other DVDs play fine on the iMac.
Thanks in advance for any information regarding this.

The CalDigit card is not rated to work on the NEWEST MacPros...the ones with different processors and other internal circuitry. It works fine on previous models. The big reason I suggest the Caldigit card over the rest is:
    1) It is half the price with all the same features
    2) It can be installed and removed by the customer. The Apple card can only be installed and removed by a certified Apple dealer.
Now, Raid 5 is good as it offers PROTECTION...where RAID 0 does not. If one drive dies, the RAID 5 still works. If the same happened to Raid 0, all info is lost...ALL. Raid 5 will lower the capacity of all the drives, as it uses one for this protection, where Raid 0 is larger. Give and take.
FYI...I cut DVCPRO HD and ProRes on internal drives...no raid. Firewire 800 drives are good for this format too. Raids are only needed for multiple streams of ProRes, and the uncompressed formats. And for protection.

  • No Support for Windows 7! Extremely Frustrated! Help!

Ok, so here's the deal. I have TX1220us tablet pc. It came with Vista 32-bit Home Premium on it. Everybody knows that Vista is a resource hog, and running the 32-bit version on a 2.2 gig 64-bit processor is a complete waste of performance capabilities. So, what's the ideal thing to do? Upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate of course! Not so easy... After upgrading, almost nothing works properly on my computer. I did this 8-10 months ago, and immediately noticed the problems. My CD/DVD Lightscribe Drive only functions partially, it only reads some discs and won't burn anything. The fingerprint sensor doesn't function at all. Worst of all, the digitizer (touchscreen) is no longer touch sensitive. The quick launch buttons werent working for a while, but I installed some vista drivers, and luckily was able to get 2 of the 4 to work.
So what do I do? I talk to HP Support for help. Unfortunately, the only "support" that I could get out of them was in the form of a few sentences. "Unfortunately, HP does not recommend upgrading from the pre-installed operating system. HP does not support anything but the pre-installed operating system" and "This is something that HP is currently developing, and we will update the support page as soon as updates are available for your hardware". The irony of this all is this: At the exact time that HP gave me the first statement, there was an ad with a link from HP on the right margin of my models support page stating "The Wait for Windows 7 is Over! Upgrading your computer has never been easier!".
Again this was 8-10 months ago that I went through all of this, and now I finally decided to give it another try. You'd think in 10 months that they would be able to develop some sort of updates for customers. Wrong... I once again received the exact same responses with absolutely no sense of concern or care for the happiness of a customer from the support representative. I have finally decided that this is some sort of marketing scheme or sales scam to force their customers to go out and buy a new computer, even though there is no need for it. My laptop is 300x faster on Win7 x64 than it was on Vista, and after paying for an expensive new operating system for a tablet that i purchased only 3 years ago for $1,600 I have no intent on going out and purchasing a new one just so I can run Windows 7.
Does anybody know who to talk to about getting issues like this resolved or to get compensation for HP's complete lack of care for customer satisfaction? Any info would be nice. Finally, if anybody has come up with a way to get this system working properly on Win 7, I'm open for suggestions. I have tried installing HP Vista drivers on my system, but when I run the setup packages, they exit out saying that the setup programs are designed for windows vista, that it has detected a different operating system, and that the setup will now exit.
    Help!
    tx1220us - Windows 7 Ultimate x64 - Nothing but problems

I think you would be very surprised at how many of your drivers are supported natively by Windows 7. I have an even newer AMD laptop which I installed W7 on and had to install very few  drivers. Running Windows Update manually from Control Panel and choosing to also see 'Optional' updates gave me those.

I think the high heat situation and damaged your video chip at the very least and someone will have to open the laptop and reflow, reball or replace the video chip. If this machine is in warrantee, you need to call HP or contact them before it is out of warrantee.

  • Lost support for CR2 (Canon RAW) in After Effects following AdobeCameraRAW 8.4.0.199 update

Has Adobe dropped Canon RAW support in After Effects?
I do timelapses.  I grade in Lightroom, create xmps, then drag the folder containing the CR2s and xmps from the Finder window into After Effects to create the sequence.
I was post-processing timelapses in After Effects on April 7th, 2014.  I then receive an update notification for Camera Raw 8.4.0.199.  I closed all open apps and updated.  Once the update had finished, I reopened the same project in After Effects, to find that After Effects no longer supports CR2 (Canon RAW).
Can't work with old projects containing CR2, likewise can't import new folders from the Finder window by clicking and dragging, or otherwise.   Can't even import a single still CR2 file into After Effects since updating.
    Error ( 39 :: 7 )
    iMac 10.1 (maxed out)
    MBP Retina 10.1 (maxed out)
    CS6 Production Premium
    Lightroom 5
Same results on both computers since updating.

    Thanks Rick,
Though this workflow may be valid from this point on, I unfortunately have a library of around 11 TB of CR2 images that I use on a regular basis in After Effects.  Going back and converting these images to DNG or JPEG would equate to an immesurable amount of time lost, not to mention the massive amount of additional hard drive space that would be required.
I've used this workflow on an almost daily basis for two and half years.  I've only experienced a similar problem when Lightroom upgraded to version 5.  AdobeCameraRaw was buggy when linking to other Adobe apps, but the problem was soon taken care of by Adobe.
Adobe still advertises CR2 support for After Effects 11 on their website.  It worked without a hitch until the recent update.
    Has anyone experienced similar problems?
Where can I find the install page for legacy versions of AdobeCameraRaw?

  • Macbook Pro support for two external displays

I keep seeing articles since yesterday stating that the new MBP retina display supports 3 external monitors and the new Macbook Air supports two (through just one ThB port?) but how come no one says anything about the new regular MBP's support? If the Air supports two isn't the regular MBP also supposed to be able to work with two external monitors?

USB video has performance limitations, but it's fine for stuff that doesn't involve fast-action video.
ah yes, sorry, the new USB 3 now supports speeds up to 5 GB/sec so it may become suitable for AV use. Actually, only ThunderBolt (and HDMI) has higher speed than the USB 3 port.
but I just found this page here at the Apple support, which states that the Air and Pro both support 2 displays and the retina MBP one more through the HDMI port, so I guess now it's official

  • Feature request: Support for Multiple Libraries (like in iMovie)

From the threads, I can tell this topic was raised by many for many years. I would like to propose support for multiple iPhoto libraries -- or more specifically, the ability to distribute media across different storage devices.
There is a huge gap between my spacially limited MBP 250 GB SSD and my external 4 TB HDD. I am aware that I can juggle two separate libraries in iPhoto but it's just not practical and the moving of media between the libraries is not a simple drag and drop effort but involves exporting and importing with me having to clean up on one side or the other.
iMovie has had support for several libraries for a long time presumably because the sheer size of media in the video realm gave the iMovie team little choice.
I can't be the only one having this itch, right?

Again, you need to clarify your terms
Aperture can move master photos files around. With Aperture you can write additional metadata to the original file.
You don't need multiple libraries to thematically arrange photos, though. A simple keywordign system will do that.
So in Aperture I don't have to restart into different libraries?
You can have all your photos in a sinble library with the master files stored off-disk easily. You can relocate them from disk to disk too. However, if you;re doing presentations that is probably not necessary if you generate good quality previews. I'd ask about these things on the Aperture forum for more.

  • No support for dv1000 with vista?

I upgraded (?) from XP to vista ultimate and now have no audio.  "no audio device installed" it tells me.  When I attempt to repair this, HP informs me that there isn't any support for this laptop running vista.  What's up with that?  There used to be sticker on it saying it was designed for XP but vista ready.
There is one more possible cause.... When I installed the vista, I did so on a samsung 320 gig hd that I purchased from a friend.  It came for a Dell XPS something and I still have a problem or two from that.
Now my dvd writter has vanished.  I am about to attempt to reinstall that....

  • How do I get good audio feed from DVD player to my MBP using an optic cable

I have successfully recorded audio off of concert DVD's using Sound Studio 3 by connecting my DVD player to my MBP using left/right outputs to a 35mm input. I purchased an optical cable, connected it to my DVD player and used a 35mm adapter to connnect it to my MBP input. All I get is a weird popping interferance type sound instead of clear audio. Any tips on what is going on? I have correct settings in system preferences (recognizes an optical connection) but all I hear is noise?
    Thanks for any help!

I just use mac the ripper with the following instructions
    http://www.ripdifferent.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1249&sid=de5cc9506c05b6ba98d6 530884489333
It gives you a few options for audio, I generally save as AAC though you can rip as AIFF and then encode into just about anything with quicktime.

  • Exporting for DVD

    Hi,
Ridiculous question I know but here goes.
I have a 2 1/2 hour show that I videoed on MiniDV and have edited in Final Cut. The image quality is as good as I want it, not perfect but fine, but when I export to use in DVD Studio I loose quality. I'v used Compressor and converted it to MPEG-2, but is there any way I can just export straight from Final Cut Pro without loosing image quality, keeping all the settings and so on I used in Final Cut Pro?
Im burning on to Dual Layer DVDs so space isn't really an issue.
Does it have to be MPEG-2? Is there a different, higher quality format I can use? Or is the only thing I can do to try keep the quality raising the bitrate?
Anyone with an insight to share with me can treat me like a luddite and use baby speak
    Cheers

    Heya,
All DVD's are authored to MPEG-2 format. You must compress the file to MPEG-2 in order to play on a standard DVD player. SD MiniDV is roughly 13gigs per hour. So for 2 1/2 hours of footage you're looking at around 30 gigs that needs to be compressed to fit onto a DVD.
You should also take into consideration the bitrate of MPEG-2 compression. Considering that the audio is compressed to AC3 a safe bitrate compression for DVD video is around 7.5 mbp/s. A bitrate higher than that may cause errors during playback on some DVD players.
single layer vs. dual layer makes no difference on the total bitrate compression it only means you can fit longer duration of the compressed bitrate. Sending to Compressor and using a customized setting of MPEG-2 compression with 7.5 bitrate for video and AC3 for audio is the best quality you'll get on a standard DVD.
    Welcome to the forum.

  • What are the best quality settings in encore for DVD production?

    Hello everyone,
I'm Paul. I was working on a HD PROJECT 1920 by 1080 30p 50mbps. I export it is using h.264 codec which produce mp4 file in pr pro cs6. When I import it in encore and export to DVD. The quality gets so dull and blurry compare to other DVD. I did not make any changes, just import and burn. It would be very helpful if some one can suggest highest quality possible settings for DVD. I even exported my project to mpegdvd. Then tried burning it with Nero 11. Every time I get error message saying, " some of the files cannot be written on the disc"  and the quality is even worse if I use encore with this file. Today, I gave a try to Amrisoft DVD creator and the quality was awesome. I did nothing just imported mp4 and it burned it on the DVD. But I want to use encore since I bought the the whole production package. Thank you.

You do realize, don't you, that H.264 isn't a supported CODEC on DVD? Blu-ray, yes. DVD, no. And the top bit rate for DVD is 9.8Mbps IIRC, but a more practical limit is in the 7-8Mbps range. Maximum resolution is 720x480 in NTSC contries, and 720x526 in PAL countries, again IIRC.
So if you are coming to a DVD with 1920 x 1080 30p source at 50Mbps, a lot of information gets thrown away to make a DVD. Maybe 90% gets trashed. So it shouldn't be surprising that the resulting video looks "dull and blurry" in comparison. It should if you're only looking at 10% of the source data.
When I've done work something like this -- making DVDs from HD sources -- I typically set AME for MPEG-2, a max bit rate of around 8Mbps, a target of around 7Mbps, and let AME do the down-sampling and re-encoding as it will. The resulting DVD looks pretty good to me. Not anything like as good as a blu-ray, but played in an upscaling blu-ray player it looks reasonably good.
Now, it is possible to export small amounts of HD source (less than about 15 minutes worth) to DVD in blu-ray format. DVD players will choke on it since it's a foreign format, but some blu-ray layers will play it. Looks just like blu-ray for the short time that it will play. I've never done this myself though so I can't tell you how to do it.

  • Trim support for SSD on Marvel controller?

I read somewhere that the 6Gbs Marvell 9128 ports do not support trim on an SSD.  Is this true?  I also heard that the RAID support for the Intel P67 ports are much more better than the Marvel Ports.  This is what I am trying to do, and am wondering if it will work.  I have an MSI P67A-GD65.  I want to run Two WD Caviar Black 6Gbs (even though I know they achieve nowhere near that rate) on Sata ports 1 and 2 (the Intel P67 controller ports), in ports 3,4,5,6 (the Intel P67 3 Gbs ports) I would have 2 1TB storage drives, A Bluray drive, A DVD drive, and in the last ports 7 or 8 (the Marvell 9128) controller 6Gbs port) I wanted to have a Crucial C300 128Gb SSD drive as the boot drive.  Would this work, or should I use port 7 and 8 for my RAID setup instead and use port 1 or 2 for the SSD?  Any thoughts are appreciated.  I love this mainboard and can't wait to get it up and running.
    My System:
MSI P67A-GD65 (B3),  Intel 2600k processor,  XFX Radeon 6950 1GB graphics card,  8 GB G.Skill Ram, 1 Crucial C300 SSD (boot drive), 2 640GB WD Caviar Black in RAID 0,  1 Blu Ray Drive, 1 DVD drive,  Corsair HX850w PS

Not true. TRIM has nothing to do with the SATA controller, it is dependent on the drive itself, and your operating system.

  • Support for XI

    Hi,
Does anybody know if there is a support for XI(exchnage infrastructure) for the downloads avaibale in SDN. i LOOKED at both the java and abap netweaver trial version but it seems XI part is not available. Does anybody know where to download XI server.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I have seen the XI installer DVDs in the ECC 5.0 pack in a client's place where they have not purchased XI separately. Not sure about ECC6.0 .
As far as I understand the licensing of XI is different from other SAP products as it is a middleware. If am not wrong, the cost is based on how many GBs of data is handled.
So you can install XI from that ECC set of DVDs which should work for 90 days(i think) before it asks for a proper license key. However during the installation you need to enter the key which is generated from the solution manger based the host name of the Box where you install XI.
    Hope this helps.
    cheers
