No surround with XBMC

When playing movies in XBMC I only get sound from my front (left & right) speakers but no sound from center or rear speakers. The HTPC (upgraded Dell Optiplex GX620) is connected to the TV through HDMI and to my Marantz SR8300 AV-Recei'ver with use of a optical cable.
I've selected below options in XBMC under Settings / System / Audio output:
- Optical / Coaxial
- 5.1
- DTS capable receiver
- Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Remark: another strange thing is when I select Dolby Digital (AC3) Capable Recei'ver, I get the following error message: failed to initialize audio device / check your audio settings. This is strange because although my receiver is 7 years old in my understanding it is AC3 capable. See link for specs on the receiver. www.marantz.eu/attachments/products/39/SR8300_manual_en.pdf
I know for sure that the AV-Recei'ver is set up correctly and cabling is done right as well because when I play a movie with PowerDVD I get 5.1 sound. (Use S/PDIF selected in PowerDVD)
Anyway I hope somebody on the forum can help me as I'm already searching the internet for 3 days to find a solution for my problem.
Additional info:
- Sound card = Creative Labs X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI-E 7.1 PCI-E
- Onboard video and audio is disabled in BIOS

Well I give up I'm already searching the internet for days now (there goes my holidays) and asked for help in various forums without any luck. All I hear and read is that the Creative X-Fi cards are a pain in the ass when used with optical cable (SPDIF) to your AV-Recei'ver.
So tomorrow my search will start to a new sound card from a different brand and hopefully this one will give me more luck.

    Your profile might have been corrupted during the upgrade. I suggest trying a new profile. Close Firefox, then on the Windows start menu, type or paste this into the Run or search box:
    <br>firefox.exe /ProfileManager
    Create a new profile, which will be more or less plain vanilla. Assuming that works normally, you can move key settings like bookmarks from your problem profile to the new profile, see: [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Recovering+important+data+from+an+old+profile Recovering important data from an old profile].
    If that doesn't work, here's the process to roll back.
    Due to security vulnerabilities, rolling back to Firefox 4.0.1 is not recommended. Firefox 3.6.18 would be the safer choice.
    First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
    Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
    Close Firefox 5.
    You could install Firefox 3.6 over it (many have reported success) or you could uninstall Firefox first. If you uninstall, do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
    Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, Firefox 3.6 should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.
    Note: When you first start up, you might be in the new blank profile. In that case, close Firefox and use the profile manager to switch back to your default profile.

  • Surround With Try/Catch : comments issue

    hi
    Please consider this code:
         public static void main(String[] pArguments)
              FileInputStream vFileInputStream = new FileInputStream("someFile.txt");
              // some comments, e.g. several lines of commented code (that might be uncommented later)
         }It is possible to have JDeveloper "Surround With Try/Catch" this, but that results in this code:
         public static void main(String[] pArguments)
              FileInputStream vFileInputStream;
              // some comments, e.g. several lines of commented code (that might be uncommented later)
              try
                   vFileInputStream = new FileInputStream("someFile.txt");
              catch (FileNotFoundException e)
                   // TODO
         }Note that the declaration is before the comments and the try block starts after the comments.
    Is this intentional behaviour? I would prefer to leave the comments where they are, after the (modified) code.
    many thanks
    Jan Vervecken

    Thanks for your reply John.
    I tried the right-click "Surround With..." > "try-catch" approach you suggest, and I get this code:
         public static void main(String[] pArguments)
              try
                   FileInputStream vFileInputStream = new FileInputStream("someFile.txt");
              catch (FileNotFoundException e)
              // some comments, e.g. several lines of commented code (that might be uncommented later)
    }Indeed, the try-block starts before the comments.
    There is another difference with this approach, the declaration is not separated from the assignment.
    Next ... I'll try to remember which approach give which result. :)

  • No 5.1 surround with DDT 3500 + X-fi Elite, Help plea

    Hi guys, newbie here.
    My problem is i cant get a 5. surround with my ddt3500 and X-fi elite.
    There?are no individual respons?of the?speakers
    No matter if is digital din or optical.
    I am using Vista 64bits as OS
    Problem discription:
    When i tested out the surround config. The rear speakers dont react seperatly. (All speakers work)
    Example: when?"rear left" is tested, the sound comes both from front left and rear left speaker. This is the same with rear right.
    Subwoofer seems?to be "in one" with front speaker.
    Front left, center and Front right is individual (they are ok)
    My DDT 3500 setting: Movie, with digital din input or optical.
    I get also very bad respons from the subs.. (very little base.)

    Hi keithho, the explanation of and solution to your problem can be found at this lengthy thread: http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&thread.id=3043&view= by_date_ascending&page=
    Should you decide to take the steps required to get surround sound working with your current setup, the proper configuration of the DTT3500 is "FOURPOINT/5. DIN", "OPTICAL", and "LINE IN".

  • Encoding flac with xbmc

    Hi,
    I'm having a unique issue, maybe someone knows how to resolve it.
    I'm using xbmc to encode whole audio CD's into flac files.  I've been slowly working through my collection when I noticed some flac files are huge, around 150 gigabytes in size.  The average 5 minute music track should result in a flac file 25 to 35 megabytes in size.  What's wierd is that they play fine.  For a 5 minute audio track, it shouldn't be 150 gigabytes in size.  Also I've noticed although it's shown as 150 gigabytes in size (from both the commandline and filemanager), it doesn't actually take up that space on my hard drive.  I can copy the file from the commandline to another drive and it takes just a few seconds.
    I'm guessing here, but somehow during the encoding process the encoder stored the wrong file size, or gave the wrong information to the filesystem?  I've dismouted the drive, and forced a fsck on it.  No problems found, and after mounting the disk again, the large flac files are still the same size.
    Has anyone else experienced this behaviour with either xbmc encoding flac (or ogg / mp3) files, or, using faac from the commandline to encode wav files?

    I read your report 'totally' . You didn't mention what file system you were using, so it was worth a guess (just like it would have been worth mentioning in your opening post, since you obviously tested it but left us in the dark about that ). So yes, it pretends to be 150 GB large, but it's not taking up that space. There is a discrepancy there that has to be accounted for somewhere, and that's exactly what seems to be happening to some btrfs users - albeit not that large. I haven't seen Ext4 to exhibit that kind of problems, or JFS, or XFS, so that probably leaves Xbmc indeed. Maybe it is allocating space but not using it?
    Is there a particular reason why you are using Xbmc? There are tools like Grip/Rubyripper (and even EAC through Wine, a de facto standard) to rip your music. Does Xbmc support the same features those dedicated ripping utilities do? E.g. online and offline integrity verification of the resulting FLAC/WAV file?
    My suggestion would be to ditch Xbmc for the ripping and use one of the specialised programs. If you really want to get to the bottom of this you should check on the Xbmc forum or in their #xbmc-linux IRC channel, or even open a ticket on their bugtracker.
    As for your posting in the other subforum, please read the description of the forum where you originally posted in:
    A place for true innovation. Share your own created utilities with the Arch community.
    Hi, I didn't believe the filesystem was the issue, so I didn't put that information in, my mistake not to have posted results which didn't happen to be the issue.
    The reason I am using XBMC is simple.  I am creating a media center for a friend who's never used Linux before (barely uses a computer), and I wanted the simplicity of an all-on-one program.  From my days as a teacher, I can say that if someone isn't familiar with a computer, asking them to learn a few different programs is harder than mastering just one.  So, in that regard XBMC is a specialised program, and I cannot find a better / more supported media center program.  But I digress my reasons for choosing XBMC don't play a part in determining the problem I am faced with.
    If it was a matter of integrity checking, flac files store their md5 sum inside.  If the sum is off the player will refuse to play the file, it would give error.  Also, decoding the flac file to a wav file would fail.  This is not the case, as the huge flac files both play and decode to proper sized wav files.  So something is a miss with xbmc's flac creation mechanism, and I'm trying to determine if I'm either missing a dependency or if there is a problem with Arch's XBMC package.
    Looking at the other "subforum" (as you call it), "Community Contributions",  the title below it is "A place for true innovation. Share your own created utilities with the Arch community."  Since the XBMC package comes from the Community Repo, it seemed like the place to put my topic.  It still seems like the place that it should go in.  If I am trying to get the attention of the XBMC package developer and the people who use Arch's Community XBMC package (my target audience for this problem) then "Community Contributions" is still the best subforum to get the problem noticed, and possible resolved.  Placing me in "Multimedia and Games" is definately not the right place to be, as XMBC is not a game nor is the issue multimedia based (i.e. faac/faad package based), but in fact a problem with how XBMC is creating / writing flac files.  I would still like my topic back in it's original subforum for best noticibility and results.
    I have both enabled XBMC's logging and am monitoring it's output as I write this message, and am going to join the irc channel on freenode when I have more debug information.  I was however hoping to first get Arch's Community response as I'd hate to make mountains out of molehills.  But it seems I must dig really deep, as my topic isn't getting noticed as it's been moved from the proper subforum.

  • Setting up a remote with ir-tables for use with XBMC

    My main goal is to use a remote with xbmc, but I'm having issues.
    Issue #1 (main problem): The directional keys and enter will work but no other keys seem to register.
    Issue #2: Even the keys that work have this weird usage issue, where pressing any of the same key twice loses the second key press. For example clicking up arrow 4 times results in only two actual "up's" being done. (first up works, second fails, third works, forth fails, etc)
    I've spent about four hours getting to this point and there is a lot of conflicting information out there on this subject which has had me very confused, but at this point I assume I can ignore any mention of Lirc as it seems like its not needed and if ir-keytable is used correctly things should just work?

    scancode 0x8034845d = KEY_M (0x32)
    scancode 0x80348483 = KEY_ESC (0x01)
    At this point is seems like everything is setup correctly but like I said only the direction keys and return work. If it did work my next step would be determining when to issue the ir-keytable write, and I'm assuming I can just do that in openbox's autostart file?
    Does anyone have any ideas as to what I might do to correct these issues?

    I also encountered davevallance's issue #1.  Directional and enter keys already work, as do volume keys.  If any other button is mapped to those working keys (using ir-keytable) then they also work, for example I can successfully map the useless "teletext" to "enter" and it produces a linefeed when pressed but I cannot get it to do the same with "space".  Interestingly it does produce a space keypress in a virtual terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F3), also "ir-keytable -t" shows the correct key event which proves the underlying OS is recognising the mapping.  The issue is somewhere in the X system instead.
    I refer now to HID Remotes which covers the situation well.  It explains that X does not process keycodes above 255 and at first that would seem to fit here.  All the keys which work (arrows, enter, volume) have keycodes less than 255.  So why don't other 'safe' keycodes work too?
    Xorg has it's own keycode map with "xmodmap" but I don't think that is responsible in this case.  From the Arch wiki it suggests exploring with:
    xev | grep -A2 --line-buffered '^KeyRelease' | sed -n '/keycode /s/^.*keycode \([0-9]*\).* (.*, \(.*\)).*$/\1 \2/p'
    Unmapped keys should produce a "NoSymbol" message but for my non-working keys there is no response at all in X.  Is there another layer between kernal and GUI?

  • Can I set up a 5.1 surround with the headphone output?

    Great Question!
    The output on the notebook is 2.0 unless specified.
     Most 5.1 headphones make a virual surround sound experience unless they require multiple mini jack inputs, optical, or coaxal.
    The only way to experience true 5.1 on a notebook is to have an internal 5.1 card (which is not included in current HP notebooks) or purchase an external to plug in (USB or ExpressCard).

  • [SOLVED] Problem with XBMC and VA-API on sandy bridge

    Hello
    I'm running XBMC on my server with a core i3 and built in HD2000 graphics. When running without VA-API everything works fine except for some lag in heavy 1080p scenes.
    But if I turn on VA-API the video works for about 5 seconds and then the frames gets messed up. It appears as it's showing the previous frame after the current and then goes to the next and does the same thing. This happens for about a second or two and then it goes back to normal for another 5 seconds. It's bit hard to explain, but I hope you'll understand.
    Any ideas why this happens?
    Thanks

    afaik this is a known bug in the current stable release (Dharma). You can either wait for the next stable (Eden), which will be released within the next weeks or use xbmc-git from the AUR.

  • Thumbnail links should have black surrounds till accessed. No surrounds with FF4.

    One web site I visit has thumbnail photos as links to other web pages. Said thumbnails, until accessed, have a black line around them which disappears after the link has been used. This is extremely handy for keeping track of things. All was fine with many versions of FF3 and Vista. With FF4 in that computer, these surrounds no longer show whether the link has been accessed or not.

    Hi Arun,
    I have checked the name of the collaboration room using the Collaboration Administration and searched for the room and then checked the name of the room.
    And then, through KM Admin, root--> rooms --> and then checked the name of the corresponding folder. Both the names are same. Still, we have the issue.
    Any other thoughts?

  • Lirc with xbmc -- Install lirc or use mceusb module?

    About a year ago or so my remote worked fine with lirc installed from repositories. Then I had few problems with harddrive and didn't touch HTPC much.
    Right now, with new harddrive in place, I reinstalled arch linux and xbmc and trying to get lirc working.. However it doesn't work the way it should.
    The way I understand is that lirc conflicts with mceusb (I have latest Arch, installed from 2011.08.19 release). I am getting double keypresses with lircd started.
    Should I use mceusb module? or should I use lirc? I am kind of confused.

    I just went through the trials and tribulations of setting Lirc up on my Zotac Nano AD10 (neat little device btw). The Arch wiki nicely states that most onboard IR receivers will work with the mceusb module. It works here.

  • No surround with quicktime player under Vista

    This is very strange: ithune play 5.1 apple trailer perfectly in surround.
    if I open the same MOV file in quicktime player, it is downmixed to stereo.

    note: I set 5.1 speaker output settings in quicktime. So this is strange it does
    not work.
    note2: on XP, everything is working.
    my hardware: toshiba laptop with 5.1 USB sound card.

    Looks like I accidentally double posted, I've got almost the same exact problem.
    "The control panel device manager driver page for the device can actually display a far more useful test. This test allows me to select S/PDIF, click the test button and .... it plays sound thru ALL FIVE sppeakers, one at a time."
    I'm not sure which test area you using, but try right clicking the speaker on the task bar and go to "playback devices -> Realtek Digital Output properties -> Supported Formats", then try doing the dts and dolby digital tests (assuming your receiver supports them).  Mine plays exactly how it should when I do that; unfortunately, that's the only time it does.
    Check my post, see if any of it looks familiar:

  • Subwoofer won't work in 7.1 surround with Audig

    I've got a surround sound system for my new Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 4 (not the pro version), and I have it all correctly setup but for some reason the subwoofer won't work. I have it set to 7. surround and as it is now everything is plugged in the correct place and all powered on and I know this for a fact because I've checked it, checked it again and rechecked it against the specifications for the Audigy 4 in the user guide and in the knwloedge base on the sb wbsite. The subwoofer does actually work too, so it hasn't broken or anything. I plugged it into the front speaker plug and it boomed away like it should do.
    Everything else works as it should, the front left/right speakers, the front speaker, the rear speakers and the side speakers, just not the woofer. Does anyone have any ideas why not? I have the latest drivers installed and I cannot find anything in the Creative Audio Console or anywhere else sound related for that matter to fix the issue (unless I'm overlooking something, which I figured I must be?). I'd appreciate any help at all as I'm pretty much stuck, and with no bass playing surround sound just isn't the same.

    Oh! I know what's happened now. I think. When you said there's supposed to be a setting for bass redirection it got me wondering... Then I realised what must have happened. I didn't install anything from the CD that came with the sound card. I instead opted to just download and install the latest drivers from the soundblaster.com website. As such (now that I look at the CD) there's a lot here I probably need which didn't get installed with those drivers.
    Okay I've installed all the stuff I think I need now... and does it work? YES! I knew the solution was staring me in the face. Thanks you very much for helping me out I very much appreciate it.

  • 5.1 Surround With Microphone?

    As the title suggests I am trying to get 5.1 surround sound working while also having a microphone for voice input. I have the Creative Inspire p580 5.1 speakers. I also have a K7N2 Delta-ILSR motherboard. I have connected the speakers to the S-bracket and one of the 3 jacks on the back of the PC, leaving me with microphone jack free. I have also set up the forward mic port. The forward port appears to work, because when i plug in the mic and talk into it i can hear sound, but i cannot actually record anything. I am using the very latest version of the Nvidia drivers and the latest audio drivers too. This is really puzzling me, as i should be able to record sound since the mic appears to be working. Is this likely a software problem? Any ideas how to fix it? Anyway, any support or ideas you can offer would be greatly appreciated as i really would like to use voice support on UT2K4.
    P.S. On a side note, what sort of temperature is normal for a Athlon XP 3000+? Mine runs at 50-70 degrees celcius, which seems a bit hot.

    I'll second the statement that 70C is much too hot as i use a Shuttle XPC with a 3200+ and i only reach 52-54C on the processor.
    As far as the audio is concerned, i haven't tried the latest driver yet... sorry. But if the former audio drivers worked, just reinstall those.
    If your mic is working fine but not recording (you can hear it), this is just a configuration problem of the right source for recording. Configure your recording software also. In my case, I could not hear myslf, but i could record without problem (i usually mute he mic).

  • Bad sound quality (less surround) with Flash players past the 10.3 version

    Some months ago I tested one of the 11.X versions and had the same problem. Aaaand now I tested the latest 11.8 version - still the same problem.
    I have PERFECT audio with 10.3 and HTML5. Sounds exactly as it should.
    But with a later version of the Flash player, there's somehow "less" surround to the audio on videos and the volume is louder. This has nothing to do with sound stutter or any of that sort. It's all about the fact that the quality is just plain worse. It's like the sound is... um... Mono? When it should be stereo/surround. Again, it's perfect with 10.3 and HTML5.
    Sooo... any ideas? I tested the latest version again after all those months because I kinda expected this problem to be gone. But no, it's still there.
    I use Firefox by the way.
    Edit: Perhaps it's after 11.2 version that this problem occurs. Figured it might be after reading another thread about something similar. Not sure though.

    How can I do ?
    Is someone can help me ?
    Thanks a lot

    Hi. I believe DVD-A is still not a free protocol, and DVD-A players are rare. and though Logic can make DVD-A, there is no program for the Mac that can actually play them. I'll try a little search, there has been a comprehensive thread on exactly this topic - though more than a year ago, if I remember correctly...
