No sync instructions appear when I plug in my new Shuffle

I just purchased an IPod Shuffle and I plugged it in to my computer with ITunes open.  Nothing happens. No instructions pop up to sync the new shuffle. What is wrong?

After hours of checking my computer's operating system, my anti-virus, which version of itunes I'm using, which port I'm trying, turning the computer on and off, looking for the ipod in the device manager under serial bus controllers (whatever they are) and trying my other ipod, i have discovered that to make the thing work all you need to do is PUSH THE CABLE ALL THE WAY INTO THE IPOD so that no metal shows. I only wish I had known...
