No Sync, weird download

Question

I have Windows XP Pro on my computer with Media Player, which is Version 9 or 10 (can't find the "About" to confirm that).  In the last three days, I have put a new 16GB micro SD from Sandisk in to take all my music onto it.  My Samsung Intensity 2 is usually easy to sync my WMP with, as it's in there and as soon as I plug the phone in, it starts the sync process.  Today, in trying to update one playlist, I plugged the phone in and got a pop-up saying that there is:
"Software is available that will help your Intensity 2 (SCH-U460) communicate with your PC.  Download Now?", yes/no, with both the Verizon and the Samsung logos shown.  When I tell it yes, it downloads and then gets to the actual installation process.  At this point a new pop-up appears, saying:
"Windows cannot find C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\VerizonRDFile.EXE.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."
Meanwhile, the install keeps on going until the green bar is full, and I've never typed in this file name.  A search for the file comes up nothing, and when I click the ok on the above message, I get:
Error installing Samsung Mobile USB Driver, Exiting...
After this everything goes away, and I'm left staring at my WMP and unable to get my device to sync up.  Like I said, normally it does the sync without a problem, and did so three days ago when I put in the new Micro SD chip, while my computer treats the phone like an external memory storage device.  The phone seems to be working otherwise, I just can't get it to sync, which bites.  Anyone with any suggestions?

The latest update...and I am getting really FRUSTRATED here!
Today I tried to do the last suggestion, but before I did I tried to do the sync music option on the phone itself as I did before after installing the MicroSD 16gb for the first time, after canceling the ****** download thing that keeps appearing.  Lo and behold, it tried to do it -- first by bringing up and installing another SCH-U460 sync device (there was already one there plus a Intensity 2 device and my old MP3 player that I still use and want to keep on there).  Then it went to the synch screen for the new device and I told it what playlists to put on and all of that, and let it do its thing...for two flippin' hours.
When it got done, I proceeded to check things out, and found that though all the songs I wanted were on the device now, many of them were listed twice, while none of the playlists I wanted were listed in the Playlists -- only the playlists that I HAD NOT wanted on the device...it's like it did the playlists backwards or something.  This made me a bit mad, so I immediately plugged the phone back into the PC to go re-sync.  Now it won't let me do that -- it keeps telling me to attach the cable to the PC.  It IS attached, dammit!  But it's like it's gone stupid or something!
I'm to the point of doing a computer restart to see if that helps, or removing and then reformatting the MIcroSD card and then ending all the synched devices that have to do with this phone and seeing if it will then redo the synching of a device, or what.  Thanks to all this fooling around today, I've lost even the playlists that I successfully did before discovering the initial problem that started this thread.  So now I can't even listen to the songs in the order I want because I have no playlists save the ones I DON'T want, unless it's an entire album.
Is there anyone out there that has had this problem themselves that can tell me how they fixed it, or has had anything like it?  Because I'm really getting disappointed in this.  I love the phone, but if I can't put the music on it in the way I want, I might as well go back to carrying every device I have, which I was trying to avoid.  What good is this phone if it won't WORK RIGHT?
